The current Oval Office rug cost over $60,000 and was designed by former first lady Laura Bush.

(CNN) - The Obamas are using their own money to redecorate the White House residence and Oval Office, the White House confirms, forgoing the $100,000 in federal funds that is traditionally allotted to new presidents for such renovation projects.

The first couple - who made well over $2 million in 2008, largely from book revenues - is also turning down money from the White House Historical Association, the organization that financed a $74,000 set of china for the Bushes.

New presidents have traditionally undertaken extensive redecoration efforts to their personal quarters reflect their own tastes, with a new Oval Office rug tradition ringing in as the priciest item. Former President George W. Bush spent over $60,000 on a new cream carpet designed by Laura Bush in 2000 to replace the deep blue rug that covered the space during the Clinton administration. Obama aides have said the president likes the Bush rug, and does not plan to replace it.

The decision to forgo federal funds, first reported by New York Magazine, is the president's latest belt-tightening move amid the sagging economy and widespread outrage over corporate excesses. Late last month, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs announced the administration had put an order on hold for a fleet of new helicopters that will cost at least $11 billion.

But it remains unclear just how much money the couple plan to spend on redecorations. In January, the Obamas tapped high-profile interior designer Michael Smith to spearhead the project.

In accepting the position, Smith said affordability would be one of the "guiding principles."

"The family's casual style, their interest in bringing 20th Century American artists to the forefront and utilizing affordable brands and products will serve as our guiding principles as we make the residence feel like their home," he said.

That's my boy for ya....gotta love him...God bless you Barack...You show them how it is to be done!!!

No one needs a 70 000 dollar rug to live a comfortable life...can you believe it????

Brian   March 30th, 2009 2:21 pm ET

Seriously? It's a good thing to see. From a realistic view though; who cares? People are going to either like the president or dislike him regardless of what he does. Go to Fox and you'll see nothing but distaste and come to CNN and nothing but positive and all praising comments. I think it's not at all newsworthy when we have so much more going on.

I agree with many of the comments; the President should do this and many haven't. It's a step I suppose but here we are...taking time out of our day to talk about crap that means nothing. Wow, I might as well be a journalist.

Ask me if I care   March 30th, 2009 2:21 pm ET

So what – I pay for all my own stuff for my home? However, I bet somehow the taxpayer is really paying for it – we just don't know how.

MaryanneAZ   March 30th, 2009 2:21 pm ET

Unfortunately, the naysayers and haters will still CLAIM that the opposite is true of the White House redecoration funding. It seems that the evidence and facts have no impact on those who do not support our Nation's President. What a sad, sad Nation we have become. And, more importantly, where will we wind up with all of this ugliness weighing on the Nation like a cancer that is untreatable? I applaud the example of the Obamas and celebrate this particular gesture as one of the many reasons I voted for President Obama.

Tabeth   March 30th, 2009 2:20 pm ET

Friends,

Obama has the heart to help the country. If everyone put heart and shoulder behind him, we will be out of recession within a year.

People are afraid that he be one of the greatest President.

Please give honor to the one who deserves it!

my   March 30th, 2009 2:20 pm ET

it is kind of hard to move to new place and not to have something of your own – your own style. If you like what is there, fine, but if you want something of your own? I guess I would take some of my things from my house I lived in before, I would add something new, and keep what i like from the new place.....but this is just me....

yolanda   March 30th, 2009 2:20 pm ET

What a wonderful gesture from the first family. Yet, people will still find fault or subtefuge. I guess living under the Bush's regime for the last eight years makes everyone a little suspicious. Who was more secretive than BUSH?

Geo1   March 30th, 2009 2:20 pm ET

Congratulations to the Obama family!

Annette   March 30th, 2009 2:19 pm ET

Yes am sure they will use their money – money received from more of the well connected corrupt officials and lobbyists he is already in bed with.

Lee   March 30th, 2009 2:18 pm ET

Could be they are redecorating it in a style that would not be acceptable to the tax payer's wallet.

HipHop   March 30th, 2009 2:17 pm ET

For those who still question the spending and budget proposals of President Obama, ..you ever heard the phrase .." you got to spend money to make money? " ....especially after the republicans left us with a debt from a surplus.....how do u sit there and criticize Obama now, yet where were you when your party was spending like crazy..hyprocrites.

RF in Texas   March 30th, 2009 2:16 pm ET

Funny...all those people leaving negative comments are conveniently forgetting how the Bush family so frivolously used our money, like the $74,000 china and $60,000 carpet they put in AT OUR EXPENSE. I applaud the Obamas for turning down federal funds and using their own money. Way to go Mr. President!

oh my....   March 30th, 2009 2:14 pm ET

What I find amusing is the same people that bashed Bush non-stop for 8 years are now crying and whining about criticism of Obama.

You get what you give, unless you are a welfare recipient, then you just vote for the giver of handouts.

rufus   March 30th, 2009 2:14 pm ET

nice gesture, but if he REALLY wanted to help the taxpayers, he would not have loaded each of us up with $200K in debt through his ridiculous deficit spending. Saving $100K is a drop in the bucket and he gets to appear magnanimous in so doing. What a showman! Wake up people and stop drinking the Kool Aid!

Marissa   March 30th, 2009 2:14 pm ET

The White House needs to look like the home of the leader of the Free World. It can't look like it was decorated from a budget-conscious issue of BH&G. (No offense BH&G). We should all be proud of it.
However, setting a good example with prioritizing (keeping the rug–although I kind of understand why Bush wanted to replace it) and using your own EARNED money is a great gesture.
Gestures cannot be underestimated as to their effect.
Because of the Obama's conscious attempts to make it a real American home, I feel more a part of it as well.

Nancy in Illinois   March 30th, 2009 2:14 pm ET

Don't worry, the Obamas will take THEIR furniture when they leave in 7 yrs and 9 months. Remember, they still own their home in Chicago.

Whilst this may seem like a drop in the bucket compared to enormous amount of the 'NECESSARY' budget put forth, remember "a penny saved is a penny earned".

Thank god we picked the right person for the job this go round. Could you imagine Bush doing this, or worse having to be in office during this?

Scott the Independent   March 30th, 2009 2:09 pm ET

JUST IMAGINE IF YOU CAN John and Cindy McCain saying the economy is so bad that we will spend our own money to revamp our private quaters. It would NEVER have happened.

As our economy started spinning out of control for the past 2 years and at the very beginning the Bush administration was spending billions and attempting to commit trillions, via the Iraq war, for another 15 years. Mrs. Bush was ordering hand crafted china for 10's of thousands of dollars at taxpayer expense.

Yet, still there are those that are so BITTER (I went there) they have to attack even this – among the other things the Obama's have done to reduce the financial expenditure of the office of the President.

BITTER

save $100k, spend 10 trillion. Good math, if only his budget reflected the same principles I could get on board. Way to go for the publicity. Everyone knows this is a stunt, you cant deny it, but at the same time something is better than nothing, good job Barry. And all the people who are using this to knock Bush for the rug and china, you don't even want to see Clinton's bill...every president does this, regardless of party. Barry didnt use the 100k decorating fund but did the 150M inaguration, Beware the smoke and mirrors people, all policiticians are the same, regardless of party.

In response to someone below saying that nobody tells them how to decorate and this isn't our business.... It becomes our business when we are essentially paying for it!

However, in this case, we are not! Hurray for Obama! I think the case of the traditional new carpet is an ego trip thing in making it "your own"..and it's dumb. I'm glad Obama is rising about it!

Dan in NY   March 30th, 2009 1:48 pm ET

The Conservatives here are criticizing the President, saying he's just grandstanding. How come they had no problem with Bush FINANCING a $74,000 set of China? Why is it OK for the Bush family to spend $74,000 on dishes, but not OK for the Obama's to spend their OWN money to decorate their new home?

karen-Phoenix   March 30th, 2009 1:48 pm ET

As a 40 year long republican who voted for and donated to President Obama, I am sooo pleased I did!!! Love everything the man is doing!
National Health care, energy jobs that stay in the USA-wind, solar. and of course Public Education is a must!!! This is a great move. He is a man from the people, for the people and understands us.

Sean   March 30th, 2009 1:47 pm ET

It's great that the Obamas are showing modesty and control in this current crisis, but too much shouldn't be made of them eschewing the new helicopters. I understand that $11 billion sounds like a lot of money spent maybe for nothing, but those helicopters keep my dad employed and without a new order coming in, my dad's contract for the past few years is running out of money and he might be out a job. So congrats for control and belt-tightening, but sometimes a little spending helps a lot of people out.

The President is once again showing his intention to do the very best he can to bring our country back to the best it can be.Refurnishing the White House with their own money may set a fiscal pattern for future familys of the mansion. Once again, you who are finding fault with every thing the p[resident does, please remember that he has been in office less than three months and it took us eight years to get into this mess. Kent-California   March 30th, 2009 1:38 pm ET

President Obama, you are not only smart but pragmatic.

FYI – 1. If The President buys items to be used in the White House after he leaves office, he can write them off on his taxes.
2. If he chooses to keep those items, he can auction them off after he leaves office and make millions.
3. If he chooses to use the alotted taxpayer money($100k) he'll be scutinized and reticuled.
4. Former first-Lady Bush purchased White House China from private funds, that have been raised over the years to cover such expenses.
5. White House Helicopters – Former President Bush initiated the order for the new Presidential Helicopters. President Obama put the program on hold due to cost overruns.

Bottom Line, the Presidency of the USA is not about one person it's an institution. Systems, protocols, security and costs have been determined well before the current President took office.

Kevin A   March 30th, 2009 1:37 pm ET

Geez. You could hang conservatives with a gold rope and they would still complain. The bush family could by the Obama's 20 times over. He tries to walk the walk, and he gets criticized. Not only did dubya spend all that was allocated, he was on vacation the whole friggin time. Me thinks he probably paid some foreign decorator to do the work to boot. Obama is THE MAN!

Dave From Philly   March 30th, 2009 1:37 pm ET

No matter what he does some peolpe will alway find fault with him. I don't recall the last president turning anything down.

In fact Pres. Bush was estimated to be worth $15 billion when he became president. And that was 8 years ago.

I would be surprised if Pres. Obama was worth more than $4 million.

DC   March 30th, 2009 1:36 pm ET

I suspect if he pays for the rug himself, he will be able to take it to his Presidential Library.

JS   March 30th, 2009 1:36 pm ET

I am not fan of Obama's, but I respect this decision. However, let's keep in mind that the renovations to the White House every four years are as much of a "stimulus" to the economy as some of the things included in last month's stimulus bill. For example, a $60,000 rug will keep several people employed for quite some time. Not replacing the rug will probably cost some people jobs.

My point...one person's wasted government spending is another person's stimulus.

Jessie   March 30th, 2009 1:36 pm ET

Here is a man who is practicing what he preaches. It starts from the top.

Li   March 30th, 2009 1:34 pm ET

Objective Thinking: "When the Obamas spend money on an interior decorator, the supporters said it was the right thing to do because it gives the interior decorator a job. Now when the Obamas don't spend money on a new rug, his supporters say he did the right thing by saving cash.. ...You can't have it both ways"

This is the kind of single mindedness that has go us into this mess. It would be nice if Objective Thinking could rap his thoughts around the whole picture and not just what's in front of him. By the Obamas spending there own money it is injecting new capital that wasn't on the table had they spent the govt funds. All this does is free up that amount of capital to be spent elsewhere. Its not like it will be sitting somewhere in a coffer not being put to good use. This way they can spend those funds more wisely that's all.

EMC-NY   March 30th, 2009 1:32 pm ET

$100k isn't a dent compared to the billions wastes in what he has spent in just the first 2 months of this psuedo "presidency!"

Laura   March 30th, 2009 1:32 pm ET

i love this. it makes it so much more obvious how much of a 'real person' President Obama is as compared to bush. like for example, there is no reason to replace a $60000 rug...and the Obama's get that.

Farrell, Houston, Tx   March 30th, 2009 1:31 pm ET

For those of you who don't understand or follow the news, Obama has always reminded people that he is in a higher tax bracket and it's only fair that he should pay more. The Obama's place their values in the American people and not "things" and we all could learn that lesson.

By the way, can I have the $100K since you aren't going to use it? You know I'm still waiting for my bailout, I'll consider the $100K a downpayment on my $5 billion bailout.

Good luck with the decorating. Post lot's of pictures on decoratingthewhilehouse.gov.

On the serious side–good decision, politically and practically, in these times. Now for fun–if they are serious about redecorating affordably, why not license all the designs they use to some manufacturers? Given that the Obamas are so popular, no doubt lots of people will want to have a chair or lamp just like they have in the Oval Office. Imagine the economic stimulus that will provide to furniture factories and retailers. "The White House Collection–exclusively at Kmart!"

LMC in Seattle   March 30th, 2009 1:22 pm ET

No matter what the President and his family do, someone will find fault with it. I think what they are doing here is fine–they are trying to lead by example. The same people who find fault with them for not buying a new oval office rug would find fault if they did redecorate with a new rug. To say that I didn't care for Bush is putting it mildly, but I tried not to find fault with every second of his life.

It has been barely over two months since the President took office in one of the worst economic times since FDR took office. It is going to take some time to come out of this and people need to be as patient as possible. I know this isn't helpful to people who have lost their jobs, but we need to keep in mind who was asleep at the wheel when our economy went down!

Li   March 30th, 2009 1:20 pm ET

It is great to see a president doing what he said he was going to do. I have been in support of Mr. Obama's decisions 99% of the time since He's been in office. I don't think it's Amazing... and I don't think it's a Show..

I think it is the right and responsible thing to do in these times. I think that people on both sides making a big deal out of it is a little over the top. But I do admit that it is small things like this that make the large percentage of americans that do not have a lot feel closer to being a part of America as a whole.

This decision (among so many more important ones) is another example to the world that Americans can make sense and act with reason and responisbility.

cheers

It is nice though, to see ANYONE in DC decide not to spend a few fractions of a percent of the money they pick from the tax payers pockets. Too bad that tens-of-trillions are being squandered, but at least we have that 100K.

liden macoff   March 30th, 2009 1:16 pm ET

As if we did n't already know it. CNN is moderating the hell out of all the anti-Obama comments. Way to go freedom of speech.
Cnn heavily slanting the news.

Steve   March 30th, 2009 1:16 pm ET

JoeSchmoe,

They didn't get taxed 90% on the book deals they have because the book deals weren't financed by American taxes. Take your backwards logic to the FoxNews website because your ignorance is not wanted.

Anton   March 30th, 2009 1:15 pm ET

i don't care about politics really, but with all this attention around, don't you people see that what really happens here is development of personality cult? and as world history tough us many times over, nothing good can't coume out of this.

Tom   March 30th, 2009 1:15 pm ET

I'll bet the most of the GOP will find something wrong with this. All they have done is cry and nit pick everything he's done instead of offering any real solutions to the economic problems except more of the same that got us here in the first place. I don't agree with Obama on everything but I enjoy his leading by example. Way to go!

MzHeather   March 30th, 2009 1:15 pm ET

All I can say is HE MUST BE DOING SOMETHING RIGHT!! He has the right wings and conservatives in an upheaval! And we all know that can only mean one thing!! Keep on keeping on Mr.President!

Shannon in MD   March 30th, 2009 1:14 pm ET

"Who pays the "Presidents" salary? So are we really saving anything? If maObama really wanted to save, he wouldn't spend anything on redecorating. What's wrong with the way it is now? This is not real "Change"..just more BS."

Was it BS when the Bush's or any other President for that matter decided to redecorate?? And what do you mean by "are we really saving anything? He is using his EARNED MONEY! Think people!

JHK-CA   March 30th, 2009 1:14 pm ET

I'm sure just like the teleprompter nonsense, the GOP and their witless cabal will spin this one real well. Somebody that actually walks the walk and is truthful confuses them, makes them angry, and prone to senseless and thoughtless actions.

Keep up the good work Obama. I'll enjoy your "socialist/marxist/federalist lol" policies over that policies-from-hell that took the country apart the last 8 years.

CD March 30th, 2009 12:57 pm ET

If he made 2 mill last year he SHOULD pay for this himself.

The fact of the matter is tha President Obama is using his OWN money when he could EASILY have taken the federal money allotted to him.

George Dubya had WAY more than 2 million to work with, yet he chose federal handouts and also ruined the economy in the process. =)

WAY TO GO BARACK!

Fran Teti   March 30th, 2009 1:13 pm ET

The comical thing about all the GOP supporters in this time is their FEAR! The fact that we have the "one just man" in the White House has them terrified about their future. Keep coming to the mikes guys! Every time you open your mouth you confirm the fact that your motives are self serving and not acknowledging all the suffering that is present in this country. If you people would think about something other than YOUR money, YOUR taxes, YOUR luxuries, wouldn't it be a more supportive community. I really feel sorry for those who don't have the ability to put themselves in another's shoes. GO OBAMA!

Dan   March 30th, 2009 1:13 pm ET

If he spent the money, he's being wasteful in hard economic times. If he spends his own money he's grandstanding and a hypocrite. The real hypocrites are the people that complain sooooo much, yet have no solution other than the same talking points that came from failed policies. The people that believe one party has to be right and the other is always wrong are the problem. It's called ignorance.

Can't Make it Up   March 30th, 2009 1:12 pm ET

This is too funny. Everyone is applauding the Obama's for saving $100K in recordations, but the man is going to run the nat'l deficit up between $5-$8 TRILLION depending upon which economist you believe.

Watching the herd run for the cliff with their heads firmly placed in their posterior is a sad commentary on Americans critical thinking skills.

Save a penny to spend Trillions of dollars and everyone applauds.

Only in America!!!

Ubaid R. (Durham NC)   March 30th, 2009 1:11 pm ET

He is setting such examples ..hard for the presidents to follow. It feels good to have an honest and open president.

Bev   March 30th, 2009 1:11 pm ET

Obviously from the negative comments in this blog, there are some who will never be happy no matter what the effort of the Obama family. This is a lead by example decision that should uplift this country. As ole Ben Franklin said, " A penny saved is a penny earned." Good for you, Mr. President!

Jennifer   March 30th, 2009 1:11 pm ET

I think it is great, first they buy their girls a swing set to play OUTSIDE, encouraging exercise and being a normal child, now they want to decorate their way with THEIR money.

They are using American designers, American artists, they bought an AMERICAN swing set.

Maybe if other parents would be more concerned with what is going on with their children and their own lives the country wouldn't be as bad off as it is. KUDOS to the Obamas for keeping themselves and their children grounded!

Sniffit   March 30th, 2009 1:10 pm ET

@ JoeShmoe, who said "...but then they didn't get taxed 90% on the book deal(s) either"

THAT MAKES ABSOLUTELY NO SENSE ON ANY LEVEL WHATSOEVER. You guys are truly truly amazing. Check your own house first "my friend"...this economic crisis didn't start on 1/20/09....economists have been warning of this impending disaster for the past couple of years but nobody in the BUsh admiinstration listened. They were too busy buying new silverwear and china and redecorating the WH for thousands and thousands of TAXPAYER dollars.

scott   March 30th, 2009 1:10 pm ET

It's about time that an administration uses their head and not their power. With the turmoil in the economy I stand up and applaude the Obama's for their chose to refuse tax dollars to revamp their living quarters. But somehow I see the other party ( GOP – grandstanding old party ) trying to burst the bubble. Hey RUSH you see they are trying to fix the economy one home at a time. Lets all stand up as responsible americans and take the lead as our president has. And unlike most conservitive Republicans I hope this president does NOT fail. If he does Rush we all fail.

Tina   March 30th, 2009 1:10 pm ET

Whether or not this is our business is not the issue. I'm glad to know our president is turning down this money. It is senseless spending in times when our country needs this money most and our president obviously realizes this. I applaude the Obamas in their decision. Those of you who are cynical about this good news disgust me.

Linda32   March 30th, 2009 1:10 pm ET

Some of the comments on here are laughable. One person is complaining about the Pres not giving rug makers jobs, another is complaining about what he will do with the furniture after he leaves, another thinks its not enough money saved and the best, complaining about his paycheck.

Guess what! $100K does go a bit and the billions plus that you love to complain about is going to help YOU, your community and our country. President Obama is laying the ground work to make sure our country will be propose for years to come. How about you think of the alternative.....we've had 8 yrs of that example.

A truly good and smart man is in the White House, how proud am I!!!!!

Also, he is stimulating with his own money.

Just Shut Up!   March 30th, 2009 1:09 pm ET

Look, I like this, but it seems to me that Obama is doing the same thing he's doing with his budget projections. "I'll half the budget I triple."

Saving $100,000 is literally not worth a spec of dust when you're spending $3.6 T.

Wise   March 30th, 2009 1:09 pm ET

To all those who consider $100,000 to be insignificant I have an old Saying which is: Many tiny droplets make a huge ocean ! Way to go Obama !!

Tyler   March 30th, 2009 1:08 pm ET

I'm stunned by all of these bitter, hateful comments.

I think this is a superb display of leadership by example. It may not amount to much in the big scheme of things, but it is the gesture that counts. Bravo Mr. President. You're awesome!

atypical   March 30th, 2009 1:08 pm ET

Their actions are to be commended. it is unfortunate, however that this is seen as the exception.

I think it time for the people to be more vocal, to unanimously call for a prohibition on excessive spending in the White House. There is no need for 60k rugs and 75k china, etc. . .. No need.

Politicians are in the habit of feigning disgust and disapproval over unnecessary spending, but typically they are examples of the worst violations.

Truly, we have allowed ourselves to be distracted and complacent long enough. Can you feel a change coming? Question is what kind of change are we wanting and to what degree are we willing to participate?

Carrie   March 30th, 2009 1:08 pm ET

Na sayers will find something wrong with this too, The party of NO will spin this someway to make this look bad , maybe like many people are hurting and the Obamas are spending money on redecorating etc etc You know the drill!

But I say great , I believe any President moving into the WH should foot the bill for the private residential areas of the house if they want to change it , why should tax payers do this for any administration. Maybe this will become the norm in the future.
Glad he is happy with a 60 K rug in the oval office , Why waste our money . he is senseable at least.

Wow , is what I think of this fine family .... they are a great example of what we all should do to help the economy.
They are really showing us change we can believe in!

LaTonia Wilson   March 30th, 2009 1:07 pm ET

President Obama could solve the economic crisis, capture BinLaden and mail each American a million dollars and you know what...you would still find a reason to hate him, so get over it...He's your president like it or not.
God Bless the Obamas

The Obama's both grew up in families of modest means and EARNED every penny that they now have. Bush grew up with a silver spoon in mouth and was GIVEN his money by his daddy.

Ebony, Gaithersburg, MD   March 30th, 2009 1:05 pm ET

What a couple...they don't just talk the talk the truly walk the walk! And to all the spectators, why can't you just admit that this President is really about the people and has no hidden agendas. He may not be successful in every change he puts forward but can you just admit that his intent (regardless of the outcome) is for the people.

I am so proud of my President... keep up the GREAT work!

Philip Grant   March 30th, 2009 1:05 pm ET

I am convinced that there is nothing President Obama can do that
will please those of you that hate him so much you can't stand it.

David   March 30th, 2009 1:04 pm ET

I am a republican, a conservative, not a "hater" (which just seems to be a convenient thing to call anyone who disagrees with you), and I'm not going to criticize Obama for this move just because he's Obama. This shows character and took class.

I am going to read it in balance with the rest of what has been going on now however. Look at the big picture. Millions (more than Bush) of taxpayer dollars were spent on his inauguration. His economic policies are saddling us with trillions of debt per year for the foreseeable future.

Is it nice that he is forgoing the $100k? Absolutely. I applaud him for it. But before you start worshiping him, remember the rest of the story. Look at the big picture. If he wants to come across as a president who understands the tough times Americans are facing and who is careful with taxpayer money, he'll have to prove is responsible with amounts larger than "just" $100,000.

Ok, I respectfully disagree with the president. Call me a hater.

It's about time the RNC whinners put their money where their mouth is – and quit complaining about spending and big govt. while taking tax payers money for doing ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!!!!

When is John "tan boy" Boehner and Eric "Britney Spears" Cantor going to give up their paycheck and live by example? – instead of just spurting the gibberish talking points from their leader Rush Limbaugh!!!!

KW, Vail AZ   March 30th, 2009 1:02 pm ET

Either many of you can't read or you're just so anti-Obama that it doesn't matter, but the OBAMAS ARE SPENDING THEIR OWN MONEY, not tax dollars to redecorate the first family's personal quarters. After all they're likely to live there for the next eight years. Please find somethin worthwhile to gripe about. Real change is coming and there's nothing the "No ideas right" can do to stop it.And by-the-way, the inauguration was paid for with private donations.

Audrey in Georgia   March 30th, 2009 1:02 pm ET

Bravo to the President and Mrs. Obama!!! But looking at pictures of the
oval office, I think you should replace those two sofas, coffee table and
desk with a more modern decor to reflect more of your style and the
21st century. Let's get some pictures on the walls, too!!!

David   March 30th, 2009 1:02 pm ET

I think its incredibly that the conservatives can spend more money on clothes in a election campaign than the liberals spend in redecorating The White House... I think the conservatives are starting to have their motivations exposed (abuse of power, reaping the benefits of exploiting others)... Government spending isn't so bad when we are replacing four year old top of the line furniture for new top of the line furniture huh Republicians... Government isn't soo bad when we are awarding contracts 200% above value to our campaign contributors.... You make me laugh GOP, please have another 12 year old give a speech "conservatism" and show us how to brainwash kids

Forgive me for wanting to be able to afford to put gas in my car, which thanks to Mr. "I DIDN'T REALIZE GAS WAS $4 A GALLON IN CALIFORNIA WHILE I PUT THE MONEY IN MY POCKET" Bush is what kicked off this mess to begin with.

JoeShmoe   March 30th, 2009 12:58 pm ET

Can you imagine Bush or any other republican using their own money to redecorate the Whitehouse??? They would probably borrow another billion from China to get the job done on a no bid open end contract. The Bush's could buy the Obama's ten times over.

RAY IN NJ   March 30th, 2009 12:53 pm ET

All I have to say is that all of the negativity by the Obama-haters is positive proof that no matter what he does they will take the opposite view! They will continue to find fault as they have no clue how to find any answers to today's problems brought about, largely, by the last President and their rich buddies! Negativity for 'negativity's' sake!! Childish and completely out of touch with the rest of America! I hope they continue because most people can't stand habitual complainers, something the Right often said during the last 8 years under Bush. Yes, continue so it'll ensure another term for PRESIDENT Obama (get used to it Rethugs – Obama WON!!!).

TheDurkinKnight   March 30th, 2009 12:53 pm ET

I find it very amusing that the President turned down about the same dollar amount that the Republicans spent to dress up Sarah Palin and her family.
Yet the Republicans are finding fault with President Obama for NOT taking the money. You Republicans are hateful, bitter and poor losers. You have no problem with Bush spending billions of our taxpayer money and creating this mess. Those finding fault with this really need to get a life. Your hate will eat you alive. Wait, maybe that is a good thing!

Jody Monroe   March 30th, 2009 12:52 pm ET

Rob   March 30th, 2009 12:49 pm ET

Every President and his family should be able to modify the residential quarters of The White House, within a realm of reasonableness, to make their home space feel like home to them. For heaven's sake, they have no space of their own on the planet but their private quarters in their residences while in office to go to without armed guards surrounding them round the clock.

Theresa   March 30th, 2009 12:49 pm ET

I can't believe this is a story!!!So what!!! And how is this political? This is a personal decision on their part, not bad, not good. The Bushes spending the money that was allotted was also not a political one, but a personal one. Again, not bad, not good.

I am impressed. Hopefully we will see more of this from our elected officials.

Allen - Quebec - Canada   March 30th, 2009 12:48 pm ET

Being a Canadian, I think it about time that the USA has someone in office that cares about the people and not just about there own well being.

Mateo   March 30th, 2009 12:47 pm ET

I can appreciate this story, but i've got to ask 2 questions:

1) how much was spent for the inauguration celebration(s)? I remember there was a tons of criticizim over Bush's parties & i know TONS more $$ was spent for the Obama's during a horrible recession. And yet, no report or word has been said.

2) at the start of his administration, Obama ordered a salary cap/freeze for those white house officials making over $100K per year to set a standard. is he himself following those guideline, i.e. not taking more than 100K of his presidential salary?

i don't mean to come across as a jerk towards the president, i just don't like how the media highlights & applauds some of the good moves without balancing it out or even mentioning some other figures & stats (that Bush received without hesitation).

kevin   March 30th, 2009 12:47 pm ET

ah yeah, the american tax payer pays this smuck. no one is saving here. when he spends money, its our money he is spending. all government officials get their salary from the american tax payer. ah all you people thinking he is doing a great think here, wake up ok. We surround them. we surround them.

So are they going to fore go the china also. It seems that the Whitehouse should have plenty of sets of china by now.

Joseph   March 30th, 2009 12:46 pm ET

Its about time they start acting like they should. But I'm sure people have forgotten that Mrs. Obama wanted to be paid to be first lady. And no I'm not a republican, just very upset about the way Obama is running things.

My dear President. This is the reason i have voted for you and will vote again in 4 years.

Ann   March 30th, 2009 12:44 pm ET

Why does the White House need a redecoration? And lets be serious, he spends more than 100k on his continuing campaign. Refusing the money was just another Obama show.

keeth in california   March 30th, 2009 12:44 pm ET

Unbelievable! I am so proud of this President and his family!

wakeupamerica   March 30th, 2009 12:43 pm ET

Amazing! Kudos to President Obama and the First Lady for leading by example and bypassing the traditional ways of excess in Washington. As President, he did not have to sacrifice his decorating budget but did so anyway. BTW, if they're spending their own personal funds to redecorate to their specific tastes, then it is none of our business how much they spend.

Zaphod2000   March 30th, 2009 12:42 pm ET

Let's face it. The rug in the Oval Office was hardly used by bush because he was never in the room working. He spent most of his time on vacation in Texas. No need to replace it.
They have eight more years to think about a new one, if at all.

LISA   March 30th, 2009 12:42 pm ET

Love those Obamas's!

Tonya   March 30th, 2009 12:42 pm ET

This is great. What a great teaching tool for children. Make good use of what you have. Recycle, Reuse, Repurpose.

Objective Thinking   March 30th, 2009 12:41 pm ET

I don't plan on bashing Obama for this at all. I think it's the right move. But I will bash his supporters.

When the Obamas spend money on an interior decorator, the supporters said it was the right thing to do because it gives the interior decorator a job. Now when the Obamas don't spend money on a new rug, his supporters say he did the right thing by saving cash. But he deprived the rug company some business!!! So which is the right thing to do? Spend money and give a job to someone? Or save money? You can't have it both ways.

My answer is that it was right to save money, but not spend it.

Steve   March 30th, 2009 12:41 pm ET

I don't really care much for him, but its' pretty hard to find anything wrong with this.

Kenneth   March 30th, 2009 12:41 pm ET

oh my stated ("Wait, wait, wait. He made over $2 million last year, so he is a member of the evil filthy rich capitalist group that is ruining American society then right?"

Ignorance is truly bliss. President Obama has never denied his financial status. He has simply stated that higher income families (including his own) can bare the burden of these economic times until we as a country recover. he never slammed rich people ... that would be foolish ... kind of like your statement.

WhoCares?   March 30th, 2009 12:41 pm ET

"For example, his inauguration cost the taxpayers nearly $110-$110 million. "

The inaugration was FOR THE ENTIRE COUNTRY. Did you see the millions there?

Mike Syracuse, NY   March 30th, 2009 12:40 pm ET

Can someone explain how turning down $100,000, but putting out a budget proposal with a $1.75 trillion deficit is setting an example fof fiscal responsibility? By the way, I'll bet a sixpack that the $100,000 gets spent anyway on something else. It's already budgetted, and I'm sure the White Hpouse won't just give it back to us taxpayers.

Virginia   March 30th, 2009 12:40 pm ET

Iva Taylor   March 30th, 2009 12:39 pm ET

I am proud of this first couple and proud that I voted for Obama. I now know two kinds of Republicans–the one kind that is silent and giving the present administration a chance and another kind who continually bark about our president for anything and everything he does. However, I have to admit, I wasn't always silent during the last eight years.

Kevin   March 30th, 2009 12:39 pm ET

Good for you Mr. President. I know it's only a symbolic gesture but it feels right and it makes Americans (those who honestly want America to rebound!) feel good about this country's decision to put you in office. I don't necessarily like all of your decisions thus far but you at least are stepping up and displaying leadership.

Where were all these conservative, economic giant brains under Bush? If they are so fiscally smart (now), why did they allow Bush to take us down such a dangerous path and not speak out against him. Maybe they were scared of the VP.

Gerda Edwards   March 30th, 2009 12:39 pm ET

What?!???

He's rejecting the "free" money from Joe / Jane Taxpayer and is relying on the private sector to take care of things??? Why couldn't he have figured this out a few hundred billion dollars ago?

So will they donate it eventually (for the tax break), or take it with them so that the next Pres will be stuck having to fill empty rooms (at 2012 prices)?

Kevin   March 30th, 2009 12:38 pm ET

Bluesky,

Guess what? It has been like this for decades. The other party always bashes the other party on White House renovations. This has been one of the most cherished rites of passage for the party that is not in office. So no, you can't have it both ways.

Saretha   March 30th, 2009 12:38 pm ET

Love the example he sets for our children!!

PAM   March 30th, 2009 12:37 pm ET

It's a documented fact that the Clinton's STOLE precious White House furnishings, china, etc. AND Bush's spent hundreds of thousands to gratify their outrageous egos, so I applaud the Obama's for realizing that redecorating the White House every four years is a HUGE waste of tax payer dollars. And I do hope that respect for precious tax payer dollars will extend beyond the task of redecorating. C'mon – ELEVEN BILLION dollars on helicopters? Go figure.....

Jan   March 30th, 2009 12:37 pm ET

Big whoopdee do. This is a drop in the bucket what they're 'saving' the American people.

Ghost   March 30th, 2009 12:37 pm ET

The president is.....is.......there's got to be something shady about this.

Wow, I was only joking, but someone did find a way to turn this into a negative.

Philip   March 30th, 2009 12:36 pm ET

Who pays the "Presidents" salary? So are we really saving anything? If maObama really wanted to save, he wouldn't spend anything on redecorating. What's wrong with the way it is now? This is not real "Change"..just more BS.

Neppy Jones   March 30th, 2009 12:36 pm ET

I think they (Obama's) are some awesome people. I guess they do know about taxpayer's money they pays taxes himself. I am glad they used their owned money they earned legally to decorate it the way wanted it decorated. And as far as the plane why use it all the other presidents have used it. The white house needs some lifting from the drab cold atmosphere it has had in the past. Way to go Obama's.

NXTH   March 30th, 2009 12:36 pm ET

This is truly leadership by example. And by the way, Barron's this week, which is no liberal mouthpiece, has a positive view of the bailout. It's time for the republicans to back off and let INTELLIGENT people fix the economy.

Belt tightening in Washington. That's fuuny. Turn down $100,000 and propose spending 3-trillion of money we don't have.

Renee   March 30th, 2009 12:35 pm ET

I'd love to ask the Republican senators (who squawk about fiscal conservatism) how many taxpayer funds they have spent on their offices, trips and dinners.

Just a tremendous amount of respect for the first couple. Great story. As for Cynthia who commented that $100,000 is nothing she must be rich and out of touch especially by saying this isnt news worthy. Mr. President I will glady walk by your side any day of the week. You are truly an inspiration to me. God Bless you and your family!

KLK   March 30th, 2009 12:35 pm ET

It would be super fabulous if they did some "Design on a Dime" type decorating where they have a designer go to everyday places (like Target, Marshall's, TJ Maxx, Kirkland's, etc) and find fancy bargain items to decorate the white house.

Nobody Asked Larry But...   March 30th, 2009 12:35 pm ET

And the Bushes? – $74,000 for dishes, $60,000 for a new rug. Obscene. But should we be surprised?

Debra Austin, Texas   March 30th, 2009 12:32 pm ET

What the critics conveniently fail to say is that 1)the inauguration was for the people who elected Obama not for Obama himslef or his family; 2)the money in the stimulus is to jump start the economy for EVERYONE not a benefit for himself. What I love about Rethugs is their need to either say "you're as bad as Bush", even though they never criticized Bush for his spending while in office; or that Obama is benefiting personally which is just stupid. I think the Rethugs need to spend more time thinking through their attacks. They are as senseless as the Rethug proposals for the economy...oh, I forgot, they don't have any proposals for the economy sans cut taxes/spending.

Steve   March 30th, 2009 12:31 pm ET

Us republican may have a complaint on this, sorry liberals. I know that all the furniture from previous presidents is stored in a warehouse. Now if Obama pays for his furniture, ie his desk, does he get to keep it after he is out. Will it be on the auction block for millions on his 100k after he is out? Is this a monetary venture? Maybe he'll just donate it, or does this pay for his ocean front retirement property, maybe I am wrong, I am observing the details, only time will tell, why isn't this aspect touched on in the article?

to BJ in Texas,

Bush's inaugurations cost as much or more than Obama's did. The trouble is, the media didn't report all the security expenses for Bush's inauguration, although they did for Obama's. When you count all that up, Bush was a big spender. But you probably knew that and just wanted to vomit out some more hate and disrespect. Funny how all you right-wing vomit kings don't respect the president as you demanded we all do of the Bush when he was gutting the country. Wonder why that is?

35% of Americans are TRAITORS for wanting America to FAIL and 65% of Americans to SUFFER!   March 30th, 2009 12:24 pm ET

Now that is indeed CHANGE you can believe in!

Memo to MSM: If President Obama is using his own funds to redecorate the family areas of the White House, it is NONE of our business how much it will cost.

74000 for china? The shrubs had one state dinner in 8 years? How tough were the guest on dishes?

60,000 for a rug? Hopefully it would last more than 8 year! Sounds like the shrub just wanted to leave his impression on the White House since that world renown designer Laura Bush designed it! Also, he wanted to remove anything provided by Clinton, as I am sure his would have lasted for 8 more years, at these prices,

I think if the Secret Service says the President needs new helicopters so be it, but 11 billion for I think 21 helicopters is a tad high. Hopefully the President's safety is not compromised.

But I admire President Obama for saving us little guys wherever and whatever he can!

Great job!

Great Mr President. Lead by example. And since they are spending THEIR OWN MONEY

Rob   March 30th, 2009 12:20 pm ET

As a Republican, here's my response:

I think this is a great move by the President. However, although I praise this decision, we need to recognize that Obama has had prior opportunities to save the taxpayers money – tremendous amounts more than $100,000 – yet that is overlooked. For example, his inauguration cost the taxpayers nearly $110-$110 million. Wasn't the economy struggling in January to warrant a decision to cut back on the inauguration?

President Obama Brings It!   March 30th, 2009 12:20 pm ET

Barack Obama has never said that rich people are evil, "oh my". Those who take people's money that was invested and entrusted to them are. He didn't say that either, but I do. Nothing wrong with being rich. But at the expense of stealing from others, that's evil.

Eric   March 30th, 2009 12:20 pm ET

Just because it hits the news doesn't make it a political stunt. The guy is doing what he can because he actually believes what he puts to the people. I think it's a lot more infuriating to hear how much our last President spent to spruce up his office. Being that the President is the very representation of our nation to the rest of the world, I don't mind some of my tax dollars going toward making him look good, Rep or Dem, but $60,000 for a rug? Wow. Sure, it's nice, but I think I would rather have the Saudi Ambassador remember the policies discussed than the quality of the flooring.

CANADIANS FOR OBAMA   March 30th, 2009 12:20 pm ET

Has there ever been a time when the American President refused to spend the allotted money for his residence. Just once, give respect where respect is due. It is the Presidents' right to use these funds, he chose not to. He is not the first millionaire int he white house, he may be one of the few to have such a humble beginnig however. Give the man his propers. Give honour where honour is due. The former President was also a millionaire, he spent White House money on his residence. He and his father were filthy rich. No one complained when he or his wife refurnished...

Chaz   March 30th, 2009 12:19 pm ET

Great! After the last administration's spend and burn policy, this is as refreshing as now having an intelligent family in the white house. No wonder the GOP is trying to stop every sensible measure to rebuild our country; they will now have to act more responsibilily when it comes to spending tax payer money.

Anthony   March 30th, 2009 12:19 pm ET

I respect my President & as a citizen, you should too!   March 30th, 2009 12:18 pm ET

Why are people so concerned with what's going to be left as a bill to taxpayers generations from now when we are going through hell right NOW?

I never understood that......if that's the case, everyone should go around screaming and angry that Eve even ate the apple.

People, it's called "do what you have to do!" Let's see, taxpayers forced to pay the price for deficit spending NOW while we're in the middle of a recession or paying for it later after the economy has grown and paying a little extra doesn't seem like too much of a hardship at all?

THINK THINK THINK! I get so sick of hearing these EXCUSES as to why people simply HATE the POTUS! You'd get more respect if you just be outright and honest with your reasons, because these sound bites and sugar coated lies are just RIDICULOUS and more transparent that the Obama administration could ever be! JEEZ!

Dave   March 30th, 2009 12:18 pm ET

Amazing. The Obamas pass up $100 G in tax payer money and pay for their own furniture instead... and Republicans STILL come on here and complain about THAT. There is nothing Obama can do that won't inspire crazy hatred from them. If he saved a baby from a burning building they'd find some way to complain about it.

It's official: Republicans have jumped the shark.

i guess some of the people leaving negative comments here on this post didn't read the entire story or understood it... it clearly states the funds are provided to EVERY president and that the previous admin. purchased a $60,000... rug(designed by his wife) for use in the white house... it doesn't state however if President Obama was the first and only president to do such....

The Mamba   March 30th, 2009 12:17 pm ET

While I do think that there are things in the budget that can be and should be cut, you do realize that sometimes you have to spend money to get things working right, don't you?? I'd rather him spend a lot of money on the budget (although I wouldn't mind if they made some cuts ... in fact I wish they would) than on a little money on redecorating which doesn't benefit any of us).

Dave NYC   March 30th, 2009 12:15 pm ET

I love how much personal responsibility the Obama's are taking. They are a great example. But I have mixed feelings about the rest of the article:

On one hand I'm outraged at how much tax payer money the supposedly "conservative" Bushes spent on decorations.

On the other hand, I find it hilarious they had to change the carpeting after Bill Clinton used the office – I would want to change it too :-D

Emily   March 30th, 2009 12:15 pm ET

Bravo Mr. President!

mk   March 30th, 2009 12:14 pm ET

great, the most best country in the world will be decorated with crap from target. get real, and decorate the white house as it should be.

Jenny Creiger   March 30th, 2009 12:14 pm ET

I love it, Obama keeps Bush's rug. I wonder if that bothers Bush?

Mike Syracuse, NY   March 30th, 2009 12:14 pm ET

Credit taxpayer account: $100,000 for remodeling
Debit taxpayer account; $10,000,000,000,000 for Obama's projected budget deficits over the nexy 10 years.

Yes, great example you're setting Barry.

natalia   March 30th, 2009 12:14 pm ET

I think Mr. Obama and Mrs. Obama are genuin people....and they will stay like that. I like them and support them.

Ron - Saint Louis   March 30th, 2009 12:14 pm ET

Why are all you hatemongors bashing President Obama? EVERY President before him has redecorated on the taxpayer's dime and for the first time we have a guy who is going to PAY OUT OF HIS OWN POCKET!

Yes, it is a drop in the bucket but it isn't the cost as much as the symbol it represents. Revolutions have begun over governments doing far less while the masses suffered.

My suggestion is to take all that whinning, hate filled energy and use it to make a positive impact on our country during this time of crisis. Don't matter anymore who did what, who was asleep at the helm, or who benefitted from bad government oversight and sloppy laws, that is an issue for another day. Let's just get America fixed and stand behind the leader that then majority of American's voted for in November.

LUISA FROM NYC NOW IN MD   March 30th, 2009 12:14 pm ET

Now what do you all naysayers have to say about this? This is just ANOTHER exmaple of President Obama putting his money where his mouth is. He's asking us ALL to bit the bullet and he is ONCE AGAIN leading by example. I thank my God every day that it is President Obama that is at the helm during these times and NOT the two bozos we previously had to answer to; who by the way, lined their pockets with gold at the expense of our economy and the blood of our soldiers and innocent civilians.

Can someone please tell me when will CNN be covering the Bush/Cheney trials?

Freed_From_W   March 30th, 2009 12:13 pm ET

"Late last month, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs announced the administration had put an order on hold for a fleet of new helicopters that will cost at least $11 billion."

You should probably add in that it wasn't the Obama Administration that ordered these, it was the Bush Administration.

Gary   March 30th, 2009 12:13 pm ET

Way to lead by example!

Anonymous   March 30th, 2009 12:13 pm ET

@ sue

WOW!! obviousely you were happy to pay for the Bushes furnishing, for the $ 74,000,00 China and for the $ 60,000.00 cream carpet in the Oval Office!

Aurelia   March 30th, 2009 12:13 pm ET

Let's hope we find Made in USA tags on the new decorations. Hard to find, yes, but they are out there.

marty   March 30th, 2009 12:13 pm ET

He is the first and best for every thing.
It is your house, so spend your money and decorate the way ycou like, there is no need to tell how much you spend. when you are ready to move, take your stuff with you.

Independent voter   March 30th, 2009 12:12 pm ET

This is cool. I don't agree with all of Obama's decisions so far (even though I voted for him), but choosing not to spend taxpayer funds to re-decorate the White House to their taste is a good sign. Obama wants corporate America and the auto unions to be reformed and stop excess/unnecessary waste, and he is leading by example. Way to go, Mr. President!

DT   March 30th, 2009 12:12 pm ET

Awesome move president show us that people higher up give a crap. I cant wait for the Republicans to try to attack him over this...

Had It   March 30th, 2009 12:12 pm ET

Laura Bush spent $60,000 on the rug? How much did the Bushes pay for everything else with our tax dollars?

How much did Cheney spend of our tax dollars for his temp. home furnishings?

THEY did NOT pay with their money – THEY used our tax dollars.

Tom, Cary NC   March 30th, 2009 12:11 pm ET

Hey, they can afford it. After all, Michele was paid $600K a year for her last job....a job so 'necessary' that they didn't bother to replace her. Anybody else have a position like that? I'd like one....

Steph   March 30th, 2009 12:11 pm ET

Whoopee!!! ...I guess this makes up for all the other taypayers money he is stealing for his cronies on Wall Street. and for his tax cheating democrats-

Fred   March 30th, 2009 12:11 pm ET

What a "class act" but what should we expect from this couple...as Laura Bush was designing and buying a custom made rug and new china days before they were leaving office-spending the tax payers dollars as if it were their own..no that is not right..they never spend their own money on anything...

Georgia Gal   March 30th, 2009 12:10 pm ET

Sue,

You did read the article right?? We aren't paying for the redecorating. The First Family is.

CHANGE.COM   March 30th, 2009 12:10 pm ET

That is change we can believe in! It's called leading by example.

uglywart   March 30th, 2009 12:10 pm ET

Leading by example, wow!! What a concept, hold on here comes the haters.....

kerry   March 30th, 2009 12:10 pm ET

Are they hiring? I am looking for remoldering job....

reggie   March 30th, 2009 12:10 pm ET

That's the least he could do since he's been taking away money from the rest of us with his crazy "bailouts" and taxing/spending. Obama is on track to becoming one of the worst presidents in history.

beevee   March 30th, 2009 12:10 pm ET

The Obama's are setting a fine example of how true leadership should be leading the country in every way. Hope they do it throughout their eight years' stay in the WH.

bj, Texas   March 30th, 2009 12:09 pm ET

What about the $240 million spent on his inauguration? The dem cooks through a hissy fit when W spent $40 million on his. Can the teleprompter in chief pay back $200 million and call it even?

Obama 2.0   March 30th, 2009 12:09 pm ET

I like the rug too, I am going to get a small version for my oval office ;)

AndyL   March 30th, 2009 12:08 pm ET

Save a couple of hundred thousand and squander away a trillion. Yeah great job there Obama.

I respect my President & as a citizen, you should too!   March 30th, 2009 12:08 pm ET

I can't WAIT to hear the comments about "disgracing former Presidents" and "soon turning the White House into a shelter or boarding house" because of the Obamas' "we back up what we talk" mentality about this.

Somewhere out there, some die-hard Republicans are scratching their heads and raging fumes as they tap away angrily at the keyboard with comments like "this is a stunt" or "they have poor taste and do not hold the White House to the standard in which it should be held" or "how about he just do away with his salary altogether if he REALLY wants to prove that he cares about our economy" and so forth.

I pray that by the end of this term, there will be substantial, recognizable fruits of their labor shown so that these "look away and close eyes" people would just have a change of heart and give this family a chance.

GG   March 30th, 2009 12:08 pm ET

Bush had no choice but to replace the Clinton rug. There's no telling what was on there that we didn't know about.

I'm so proud!   March 30th, 2009 12:08 pm ET

Me too, I'm very proud of Preisident Obama and all that's he accomplished in the past 60 days. It's going to take a minute to get out of this mess, as it did not happen over night. I hope they will give us a peek at whatever changes they make inside.

Fair is Fair   March 30th, 2009 12:08 pm ET

The best way to cover up real issues is with a diversion. Obama is a smart man in this respect.

Sandra   March 30th, 2009 12:07 pm ET

AT LAST.... Someone with just a little COMMON SENSE! Now if all our CEO's would follow the lead, the rest of us might not have to choose between housing, food, or medical care.

brooklynsdondivo   March 30th, 2009 12:07 pm ET

He sure is a businessman. Way to go President Obama!!!

sensi johnson   March 30th, 2009 12:07 pm ET

Thank you Mr. President! Now that's a new precedent. Did I hear no more federal funding for white house decorations???

sue   March 30th, 2009 12:06 pm ET

Oh WOW!!!! Let's have a real PITY Party!!!!! Why the hell should we pay for the Obama's personal home furnishings? Where the h- is their furniture hiding???? I want new furniture too, but No One has me on a Bailout Dole to refurbish. The real working people PAY THEIR OWN HOME decorating. AND we don't have the rich overpaid vultures helping us!!!!!!!

KC   March 30th, 2009 12:06 pm ET

They should....they have the money and they want it redecorated. Times are hard so redecorating seems a bit wasteful.

Mike from Vancouver BC   March 30th, 2009 12:05 pm ET

Just imagine what the GOP would say if he used tax-payer's money to decorate. We'd never hear the end of it.

Shari, NY   March 30th, 2009 12:05 pm ET

Can't please everybody Mr. President! Some people will still vent that you are spending your own money and not the funds you are entitled to.

Lotta Muni   March 30th, 2009 12:05 pm ET

Foregoing $100,000 which is a drop in the bucket next to the trillion (that's $1,000,000,000,000) his budget sticks the taxpayers with each year for the next decade. Nice going Barry!!

Cathy Brandes   March 30th, 2009 12:05 pm ET

Good for them. We have come a long way since Nancy Regan wanted the American public to pay for new china!
I agree to wait until the new puppy is house broken!

AnnMM   March 30th, 2009 12:05 pm ET

We know the right winger nutters will find a problem with this. I'm just waiting with baited breathe to hear what the looney toons will come up with.

Obama 2.0   March 30th, 2009 12:04 pm ET

That's my Prez! He just keeps snuffing out GOP talking points, Ha.

Kiyaki   March 30th, 2009 12:04 pm ET

Lead by example Mr. President. I wish people are watching you and taking notes..

cheryl   March 30th, 2009 12:03 pm ET

$174,000 savings on renovations! I love it. Where I and many Americans with common sense come from, it's called making due with what you have. And the fact that they [the Obama's] are using their own money shows that the government money is better spent else where.

Now what!!!   March 30th, 2009 12:02 pm ET

OK President Obama haters!!! Sounds like they are in touch with the pain the American people are feeling.

No other president what have done that. Regardless of the state of the economy!!!

barking dog from Delaware   March 30th, 2009 12:02 pm ET

Now thats an ugly carpet. The seal belongs on a wall ,not the floor.

Laurie, Spokane, WA   March 30th, 2009 12:02 pm ET

Non-issue. Give it a reat.

Brian Crooks   March 30th, 2009 12:02 pm ET

What say you now, conservatives? Clearly, this is mostly a cosmetic decision, but it does look good to turn down the redecoration money and pay for it out of your own pocket. Bravo, Obamas!

Paula   March 30th, 2009 12:02 pm ET

Another 1st for this President-hopefully all those Presidents who come after him will be mindful of our tax dollars also. A $60,000 rug? Good Lord!

Maryann Rose   March 30th, 2009 12:02 pm ET

How great is this?!!!

A President who talks the talk AND walks the walk!

Wonder how the righties will spin this so they can criticize?

I'll check back later to see.

:)

I respect my President & whether you like him or not, as a citizen, you should too!   March 30th, 2009 12:01 pm ET

I'm sure somewhere in this "I back up what I say" piece about the Obama's, the Republicans will find a way to be awfully "disappointed" in their choice to reject federal funds for redecorating. Somewhere out there, I get the vision of a "die hard but really doesn't even know WHY" Republican typing angrily at the keyboard about how the Obama's will soon have the white house looking like a shelter or boarding house due to their poor taste and non-elitist desire to reject thousands of dollars. In another area, I see a woman, rather old and rather politically uneducated, but raised as a far-rightist, none the less, biting her nails as she waits for her comment,

"This man is nothing but a hypocrite and brings disgrace to the Presidents before him by doing away with traditions, even if it DOES mean spending money on frivilous things while our economy suffers"

to pass CNN's moderation because it's important for the world to understand why a story such as this angers her and her party.

By the way, KUDOS to the Obamas. I respect and appreciate you and I pray that you endure possess, strength, diligence, and be steadfast in the midst of the useless comments and slander thrown your way so that you can ONLY focus on getting this country to where it needs to be. I pray that we all get to actually see the fruits of your labors by the end of this term so that nay-sayers can begin to have a change of heart...

President Obama Brings It!   March 30th, 2009 12:00 pm ET

Awesome! I heart the Obamas.

George from Minneapolis   March 30th, 2009 12:00 pm ET

President Obama has great character.

Wake up America!

bill   March 30th, 2009 11:59 am ET

I'm waiting for the comments about how this either isn't news or that its another example of facism or socialism by wacky liberals trying to ruin the country and take over the wolrd.

Morgan   March 30th, 2009 11:59 am ET

Good move, Mr. President. While I can't say I have loved every move in the first two months, I can say I think all the decision have been thought out and not just shot from the hip. I certainly appreciate that after the last eight years of shoot first ask questions later mentality.

John in Ohio   March 30th, 2009 11:58 am ET

Yay Obama. Proud to have them as representatives of our country.

I'm sure Republicans will find a reason to blast this, ignoring Bush's past history. It's suddenly become acceptable for Republicans to criticize independently wealthy entrepenuers, so long as those entrepenuers are liberals.

DrFrann in Los Angeles   March 30th, 2009 11:58 am ET

Walking the talk. Gotta love him Intelligence, integrity and heart.

Dutch/Bad Newz, VA   March 30th, 2009 11:58 am ET

Leading by example.

Alright, lets see the Obama bashing on this one. I know its coming.

Ariana   March 30th, 2009 11:56 am ET

Good, that's my kind of president. Find a way to spin this one you crazy good-for-nothing Republicans!

Former Republican   March 30th, 2009 11:55 am ET

God bless this wonderful couple!

Anthony R. Seta   March 30th, 2009 11:55 am ET

I agree – the rug purchased by Bush (with Laura's help) is really beautiful and does not need to be replaced. In fact, that's one of the coolest rugs I've ever seen.

Obama is one cool and smart fella. I like this approach to using personal funds rather than pubic money from the treasury. Now if only the entire DC political culture could follow suit. Not very probable though, since it's so hard to give up all of those cool perks that can simply be charged to the people.

Mobius   March 30th, 2009 11:55 am ET

I bet he deducts the cost as a charitable donation – if he files his taxes. Maybe he should check with SecTreas first. I hear he knows how now.

matt   March 30th, 2009 11:55 am ET

now theres change we can believe in using tax payers dollars to redecorate the white house

Franky   March 30th, 2009 11:55 am ET

This is a disgrace to our tranquility. Heck, Thomas Jefferson did everyone bogus and took everything with him, he might as well take the White House with him. And Congress hooked up Madison for his belongings, that' the American Way! Even wen the British burned down everything Monroe snapped, heck yeah!! LOL!!

This is a disgrace to our brethren and to our founding fathers, since when we cared about our money?? Ohh yeah, when the British here, LOL!!

mc- atlanta   March 30th, 2009 11:54 am ET

I love it, conservatives will say GW was one of their own, yea right. GW can take a few pointers from Obama about wasting taxpayer money on decorations in the white house. Unreal.

Nomoreloonyleft   March 30th, 2009 11:53 am ET

Nothing more than a political stunt. If he was genuine about saving money, he would not have flown Air Force One to Colorad to sign a bill in front of the media. Sad thing is, all the egobamaniacs will lick this up.

Kel   March 30th, 2009 11:52 am ET

Good for them.

republicans hate america   March 30th, 2009 11:52 am ET

sorry rush limbaugh party you will not be able to create phony outrage this time.

Tim E   March 30th, 2009 11:52 am ET

Replacing the carpet should wait until he's house trained the new dog, and the press corps.

Demi   March 30th, 2009 11:52 am ET

I am sure the haters will also have a problem with this!

Takeshi   March 30th, 2009 11:52 am ET

i wonder how people will get angry at this mmmmm? No way you can. Jesus people dont u see this man loves his job and is for real

Henry Miller, Cary, NC   March 30th, 2009 11:52 am ET

"Obama aides have said the president likes the Bush rug, and does not plan to replace it."

Thereby depriving the rug manufacturer of $60,000 worth of business. As far as I'm concerned, that would be a far better use of $60k of "stimulus" than giving it, no strings attached, to a moribund, mismanaged, company.

oh my....   March 30th, 2009 11:51 am ET

Wait, wait, wait. He made over $2 million last year, so he is a member of the evil filthy rich capitalist group that is ruining American society then right?

Dutch/Bad Newz, VA   March 30th, 2009 11:51 am ET

I can't wait to hear the republicans bash the First Family for this.

Harry   March 30th, 2009 11:49 am ET

wow, just wow!
