The president and first lady departed for London Tuesday morning.

WASHINGTON (CNN)– As Barack Obama takes off for his first overseas trip as president, a new national poll indicates that more than eight in ten Americans think he will do a good job representing the U.S. to the world.

And seven in ten people questioned in the CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey, released Tuesday, believe that leaders of other countries respect Obama.

That last figure is in sharp contrast with George W. Bush. At the start of his presidency in 2001, only 49 percent believed that foreign leaders respected Bush.

“Except for the period following the 9/11 attacks, that number never got any better for Bush,” says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. "Even among Republicans, a majority believes that other world leaders respect Obama."

The CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll was conducted March 12-15, with 1,019 adult Americans questioned by telephone. The survey’s sampling error is plus or minus three percentage points.

We in England have the GREATEST respect for President Obama. It is SO refreshing for us to know that after the illiteracy of Bush, the US has an educated man in the White House. The empty and totally meaningless comment from Kathy can only mean that she is an uneducated person and would therefore not have the mental capacity to identify with the literate.

Hey did you wish the former President Bush to fail.
After 9/11 he had the good will of the world which he did misuse!

Now that you have an intelligent President, you try to find all kind of mistakes...looholes in him...what behavior is that?

LUISA FROM NYC NOW IN MD   March 31st, 2009 12:19 pm ET

It is soooo gratifying to hear so many folks echo my sentiments of pride and respect for President Obama.

I am hard pressed to think of another individual that would've taken on the office of the presidency with such fervor, intelligence, charisma, and diligence. Especially as it was handed over from those two idiots we had to put up with for 8 years. I myself would've resigned.

Instead we have been blessed with a president that cares about the average American, not about making the rich richer. A president who has made it popular to love and cherish one's wife; who puts emphasis on being a great father, in spite of the many demands on his time by this oftentimes ungrateful, and self-centered country. And a president that is putting policies in place to protect the very same average Americans that voted him into office in the first place, because he is well aware that whoever comes after him won't give a flying leap about the "little people", and it'll be back to business as usual where 10% of the population gains at the expense of the rest of us.

Thank you President Obama!!! We love you!!!

Kathy   March 31st, 2009 12:15 pm ET

Who cares what other countries think of us? No matter how much we donate to charities, no matter how many people we liberate, jealousy will always be directed towards USA.

If Europe likes our president, then that worries me.

Debi   March 31st, 2009 12:09 pm ET

I have felt sorry for Laura Bush over the last eight years. I am sure she was embarassed by her husband's lack of intelligence, especially when she had to go on the world stage with him. But I am glad an intelligent couple (the Obamas) will finally be representing the USA.

Also, Michelle looks lovely in this dress. Hopefully the critics will think the same.

NOT!

Rolman Greenville SC   March 31st, 2009 12:00 pm ET

I'm sure he will be welcomed with the respect due his office, and the recognition of his intellect and integrety. I have traveled to Europe frequently since the early 70's. [My wife is Norwegian]. I have always appreciated the opportunity to gain incite into the mind of local citizenry. Under Bush/Cheney, all across Western Europe, Americans again became the "Ugly" members of the world stage, greeted with unwelcome distaste. Europeans never really cared much about US politics. But with Mr. Obama, there was hopeful interest for the change he had promised. I'm sure with Europeans as well as Americans, he will be given a chance to deliver.

As for the bigoted, hipocritical, sore losers of the right, who so proficiently define their own foibles, here, your self imposed ignorance is matched only by your isolated, disjunctive opinions.

Respect, how can we measure that? Lets try the market (which is one kind of an objective data) and see if that respect extends to his current economic policies as well. I will check 1 week after G20

and the President of Brazille does not respect any White men. Our financial crisis was not created by President Obama, Blacks, Browns or Native Americans. Now the whole world is crying and suffering, due to Bush, Dodd, Madoff, Sandford, Tyco CEO, Enron CEO, Worldcomm CEO....all of which are White.

He said:

"This was a crisis that was fostered and boosted by the irrational behaviour of people who were white and blue-eyed, who before the crisis they looked like they knew everything about economics, but now have demonstrated they know nothing about economics,”

7 out of 10 where I work don't agree with this president, don’t trust this president, won’t support this community organizer / social worker president, sure, you keep asking the same question to the same people." --------- Well 9 out of 10 of my neighbors love President Obama and think he is doing an excellent job with the huge mess he inherited. They cannot say enough about how happy they are to have an intelligent President who gives so much thought to what he is doing and communicates so well with Americans. The fact that he chose to be a community organizer helping lower and middle class Americans instead of taking a six-figure law firm job shows that he cares about REAL people not just the elite. So, you need to recognize that people all over the country have different opinions. Just because you and your co-workers are not supportive of our President does not mean that is the case everywhere.

I don't agree with everything he is doing, nor did I agree with everything Bush did. We as a nation voted him in as our leader let him do his job.

"He talks about a large stimulus campaign by Americans. All of these steps, their combination and their permanency, is a way to hell," said Czech Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek
--------------------------

Well, he is the Prime Minister of the Czech Republic which is not exactly an example of economic dominance, so I don't think we need to give too much credence to his view of how to stimulate an economic recovery. Of course the desperate repubs seize on any criticism of our President that they can find. If repubs want to follow the Cech Republic's economic expertise that is up to them.

If there is a better way of doing things let it be known but preaching gloom and doom is the way to do it.

The Dems did the same thing when 43rd was president but at least they had alternative solutions.

Note to Republicans: Whether it is fair or unfair America blames you for the situation we are in. The way to win public trust back is not constantly telling us how bad your rivals are but showing us how your alternative will benefit this country. So far you are failing miserably.

So, GOPers, let me see if I can get the gist of your arguments:

1. Somehow it was a GOOD thing that Bush was utterly despised by European leaders? Do you feel that it's a good thing to want to lose even more allies through bluster and arrogance?

2. Do you feel that it's ultimately a good thing that many former Bush administration members might not be able to ever leave this country because of pending war crimes indictments?

3. I love the paranoid "Europe wants to destroy the US" mentality? Why would Europe want to "destroy" us? Moreover, if you honestly feel that way, should we now invade Europe to install puppet governments there in the name of pre-emptive warfare?

Expat American   March 31st, 2009 11:05 am ET

The Bush administration believed that its 'cowboy diplomacy' would instill a respect of the United States through fear. But it didn't. The rest of the world laughed at the United States; as it turned its back on the United States.

President Obama can change that, no matter how much the Republicans ignore the fact that the rest of the world turned its back on their leader; or when someone threw a filthy shoe at him. How many shoes would be thrown at McCain….or Palin?

Shawn   March 31st, 2009 11:04 am ET

Of course world leaders respect Obama. And here's a change - he respects them! This doesn't mean they'll all agree on everything since Obama is looking out for American interests above all, and they are looking out for their interests.

It's just so nice to have who isn't a total moron, war criminal and a disgrace to all humanity.

tmctn   March 31st, 2009 11:03 am ET

obama has not accomplished anything here in the US yet so who knows. This country fell on their collective faces over him and proved how truly ignorant we are as a whole. electing a guy with less than two years of experience to the position of President of the US is NOT our finest moment. But then again we are the same group that made him rich off of two books he wrote or had written. Two books about nothing. We have set him up to fail. We have glorified him to the point that he actually thinks he is supreme. He will soon find out he is not the King of the world. Let's just hope he doesn't go into sulky pout over it and further diminish the office of the President of the US. Maybe someone will give him meaningful gifts like leggos or transformers or something like that to make him feel better.

Typical White Person   March 31st, 2009 11:01 am ET

"Americans believe world leaders respect Obama"...

And Americans also believe wrestling is real and that "government" money is free money that never has to be accounted for or paid back.

dmcd   March 31st, 2009 10:58 am ET

I traveled abroad for the summer of 2008. Every time I told a foreigner that I was an American, within five minutes, they mentioned Obama and how much hope they had that he would turn the country around.
I can't speak to foreign leaders, but foreign commoners certainly like him... I think his popularity has something to do with a basic respect for human rights... i.e. immediately putting an end to torture.

Also, does anyone actually understand how a poll works? Simply put, it is a statistical analysis based on a small sample. The accuracy of polls always has, and always will be suspect. Polls are manufactured news that help the media cover the horse race without actually digging for facts.
I though we would stop hearing about polls constantly after the election, but I guess my optimism was unwarranted.
CNN, you have a website where you can publish the entirety of the poll, why don't you? You can still publish the article with what you deem to be the most important points, but if you put the full poll results, along with the formula used to extrapolate the info, your readers can be much better informed.
Please start using the technology to provide us with the whole story, not just what you deem to be the important parts of the story.

That is no surprise to me. Obama has nowhere to go but up. He is intelligent, thoughtful and articulate, and they haven't seen that from an American president in 8 years. The bar isn't exactly set very high.

The more the world sees of Obama, the more they will like him. Contrary to what some Republicans try to say with their "empy suit" rhetoric, there is a whole lot of "there" there.

Many around the world support and respect President Obama because they see that this country now has a leader with a brain and has the ability to communicate with others. It's sad that Americans have gotten so used to having an Idiot for President that they fear the difference. They are not used to having a President that does not need to be told what to say and do for his every move. They are also not used to having a President that will communicate directly with them and speak the truth rather than just blurting out what he thinks the people want to hear. Hence, the saying; THE TRUTH HURTS.

President Obama has done nothing but good since January 20, 2009 and some of you have the audacity to criticize him. He is a breath of fresh air in this recession cess pool that the previous administration has sunk the US into. I pray for he and the first ladies' safety arriving to London and returning home. He will be welcomed abroad just as warmly as he is here in the US – even the haters shake his hand when he visits their depressed city or town.

President Obama is a true leader and the best we have had in a long time. A lot of you should think about what write before you write or type it. Your true ignorance is so unbecoming of you as a human being.

Truly the only way for Democracy to thrive is for all of us... each and every one of us, have our own beliefs and values. Bring them to the table. Then feast. This whole garbage of "I am the only right one and everybody must be like me and think like me" Don't you dare call yourself a Democracy loving American if you talk this way.

We are the land of free and home of the brave. With freedom comes responsibility, not just to protect our way of life, but to truly embrace our own forms of freedom. That means that protecting our way of life will different for each and every American. Knowledge, hope, ideas and freedom. Embrace these and be free. Hide from them and be a prisoner to only yourself.

German,Irish American   March 31st, 2009 10:37 am ET

The first time Sarkozy met Obama he told his fellow European leaders that Obama was inexperienced, gullible, and immature. Doesn't sound like respect to me, it sounds like other countries leaders seen beyond the phony smile and speech, and figured out just how much of an empty suit we elected as President.

Biased   March 31st, 2009 10:37 am ET

What has he done to earn anyone's respect overseas? So far nothing I see. You don't get respect automatically just because you "aren't George Bush" as much as it pains democrats to hear it. It is time this adoration and idol worship by democrats who believe this man can do no wrong and appears to walk on water is put into some perspective. They may love him to the point of hero worship but that doesn't mean everyone else does.

a canuck   March 31st, 2009 10:37 am ET

The world is a kinder gentler place with the Obamas in the White House.......and for this reason they are respected.

George   March 31st, 2009 10:37 am ET

Maybe a good measuring instrument would be how many shoes he gets thrown at him. My guess will be none at all. He'll get hugs and handshakes, and America will be shed in a brighter light after this trip.
THANK GOD!!!!

Kim   March 31st, 2009 10:36 am ET

I agree with the statement that Obama needs to earn respect. He does seem to be campaigning awful hard though. The countries like him because he is an apeaser. I do not have confidence in him protecting our country. And he is already driving us into bankruptcy. I pray everyday that our country survives his policies.

T from MO   March 31st, 2009 10:35 am ET

They should have repspect for him, Obama is singlehandedly destoying the United States. I don't like it but I'm impressed he still has so many mindless followers in this country.

J S Ragman   March 31st, 2009 10:34 am ET

My guess is that he will do very well and be widely accepted. Don't forget, this is a President who can actually put sentences together that make sense.

Peace   March 31st, 2009 10:33 am ET

As our Doctor Phil always says: "If you want good friends, be a good friend". Pres. Obama respects, listens, likes his fellow world leaders. In return they do the same to him.

David   March 31st, 2009 10:30 am ET

You would think that he would be loved by his fellow socialists and communists. On the other hand, with America being the biggest debtor nation in the world and with no way of paying back the countries we owe money to, maybe not.

roy   March 31st, 2009 10:29 am ET

I am sure they will respect him there, just like here, people give him high approval ratings, but hate his policies. I would say in about three months, people will realize this isnt a high school popularity contest, and his ratings will plummet. Yikes!

Bob the Observer   March 31st, 2009 10:29 am ET

Let's get real. A poll that says what "Americans think that foreign citizens and leaders will think" of our new president is completely worthless.

All that matters is finding out what they actually think of them. I wish him the best and hope he finds success in the journey.

The poll cited, however, is just one more example of American ethnocentrism that supposes that what we think must be what the other 6.5 billion people in the world think.

Deb   March 31st, 2009 10:26 am ET

I am sure Cindy (PA) you are in the minority. President Obama is a well spoken, educated man with a high IQ. Yes I believe the world respects him. Sorry you and your co-workers feel the way you do. We can not win them all.

Kreeana   March 31st, 2009 10:26 am ET

The world loves Obama, just like I love Obama. He is God's gift to us and we need to stop putting him down and back him in all that he does. I love Obama and know that he will do everything right!!!

May the dear Father bless our amazing & wonderful president! Praise you for his excellent works!

yolanda   March 31st, 2009 10:24 am ET

Anyone who thinks Obama is weak better think again. A man with brains is much more dangerous than one with brawn. Bush had brawn and look at our standing in the world. PRESIDENT OBAMA, to those disrepectful so called proud AMERICAN, is a thinker and a planner. He thinks before he shoots off his mouth with inane chatter. Another point, those who take kindness for weakness are fools.

Alex   March 31st, 2009 10:24 am ET

I know that other countries love Obama. I live in Canada and he has a higher approval rating than our own leader.

Scott, Boston   March 31st, 2009 10:23 am ET

They adore our President the way we do. He's just like JFK, but darker and with bigger ears.

Ed, Santa Fe, NM   March 31st, 2009 10:23 am ET

Put it this way: no one will be throwing shoes at our president. That's reserved for war criminals.

karuna   March 31st, 2009 10:22 am ET

These countries tried to emulate the US when times were so good, they copied everything. Now they want to blame us for the mess that all of us are in?? If they have had better options SHOW THEM or shut up. They know that Obama is better than anything they have had over the last eight years, and threatening to walkout and other junk stuff serves no purpose. If they can go it alone without the US, I say, "go ahead', but they know that without the US, it would be a flop anyways. So let them stuff it and bear it for they can't live without us and should not lay blame on anyone but themselves. They have gotten into this mess themselves, regardless of who they want to blame now.

Obama will continue his campaign for "President of the World" began during his heroic trip across Europe last year. After he and Pelosi have beaten the US into submission by rationing health care, taking over the business economy and ruling employment it will then be the world to take over.

Mel   March 31st, 2009 10:20 am ET

Not just the world leaders but the people of the world have more respect for Obama than they ever did for Bush. So very right.

Robert   March 31st, 2009 10:20 am ET

Lousy, that's how he'll do.

He'll get used by the world. If they love him that much they can keep him.

Kimberly in Arizona   March 31st, 2009 10:19 am ET

He is going to be accepted with open arms. Bush was HATED around the world, and he brought this country down with him. Obama is respected, and FINALLY the rest of the world will see the TRUE America, and who we REALLY are. I am SO proud that he is our president and that he is going over seas to bring in more support of the USA, we really need it...

jake   March 31st, 2009 10:19 am ET

Obama, with the help of Clinton, will slowly restore some respect to our great nation. This is the reason I voted for Hillary in the primaries and why I quickly threw my support behind Obama.

Johnny from VA   March 31st, 2009 10:18 am ET

I'd like to see how the question(s) was worded.... I'm sure European leaders LIKE Obama, because he is more likely to capitulate to their needs and desires. Unfortunately, that comes at a cost because our interests as Americans comes second. Not that Obama cares about that. But I doubt they truly respect him as a leader.

Drew   March 31st, 2009 10:18 am ET

The general public of this country are always wrong and foreign individuals would be the best people to ask about our situation. However, they don't know what its like living here so the only opinions that really matter are our own.

Crewkin   March 31st, 2009 10:16 am ET

With other nations like Iran and N. Korea beginning to really push the limit with the development of nuclear weapons how can you say other countries respect this president. I bet they like him sure. But respecting and liking someone are two different things. Also let's not forget the bold moves other countries like China and Russia have taken recently in attemts to undermind this countries resolve. I believe internationally he is seen as a "Nice guy" who if it came down to it isn't willing to use force. Because of this many other countries feel emboldened. I think international leaders respected Bush more cause they knew he was more likely to do something. But I know they didn't like him as much.

craig   March 31st, 2009 10:15 am ET

Truth Bomb Thrower- Bush has done more to weaken the US than any other president in our history.
Even our allies hate us because of him. Where have you been our status cannot get any lower.

Bon Voyage, Mr. President & First Lady! Enjoy your entry on the World stage. You truly represent your country extremely well. Leave the country knowing that more than 80% believe that you will do a good job representing the USA to the World and that you have the respect of other World Leaders.

Those that give respect have that respect returned two-fold. You are an inspiration to the World.

What a refreshing CHANGE!

As an American living in Europe, I see only hope and inspiration invoked upon the people and leaders over here. It actually scares me how much the Europeans love and respect President Obama, because they place a lot of pressure on him to help solve the economic crisis of not only the US, but of the world. I love that he has this support, but I hope the world isn't disappointed or change their opinions of Obama when the crisis isn't solved in a short amount of time.

As a former republican who voted for President Obama I am sooo proud I did!!! He is a man from the people, for the people and will NOT be a bully to the world and think he can bomb his way through the world!

Antje   March 31st, 2009 10:11 am ET

There is no doubt whatsoever in my mind that the leaders of foreign countries respect our President. And off couse there will be tough but healthy discussions about the global economy and issues regarding Afganistan/Pakistan, but this is not a bad thing.
President Obama (and his family) are well liked and he has something which is far more important than anything else – communication skills, listening skills and diplomacy. Not to forget a sense of humor. I am sure that he will really listen to what other countries have to say and find a middle ground.
A good excample here in the US is the Veterans health insurance policy proposal which he stopped after listening to the Veterans. This is just one excample. This of course did not get much press coverage by the way.
As far as the Afghanistan-Pakistan plan is concerned, President Obama is asking foreign nations to step up to the plate without mandating how and what they h a v e to contribute. Instead the President will ask what they c a n contribute. With this approach he will make a lot of friends and allies and restore our standing in the world.
Talking to a lot of friends in Europe I can tell you that Europe is really excited that the President and the First Lady are visiting. But they also are aware that he does not have a magic wand concerning this global economic crisis. But at least they see how hard he is trying to fix what is wrong and finally doing something, because doing nothing is not an option.

Big John   March 31st, 2009 10:10 am ET

President Obama will be the most respected president since Kennedy and begin to bring back the respect and good name we once had before pResident Bush ruined it.

Scott   March 31st, 2009 10:10 am ET

These polls are laughable. After 60 days of this knucklehead we've already seen he is not qualified to be President. Who cares what mamby pamby EU leaders think.
Obama is showing his true colors by selling off our country so that he can have more power. I think we may have enough already to impeach Obama. Fingers crossed!

John Smith   March 31st, 2009 10:09 am ET

Obama has been elected by the media, he is liked overseas by the liberal medias overseas. Taking a poll from liberal readers yeilds biased poll. Essentially you've show CNN to be biased/liberal. Good reporting?

welches, oregon   March 31st, 2009 10:08 am ET

Not only will President Obama be respected and valued, First Lady Michelle Obama will also find much adoration and respect. World Leaders know Obama the best hope for the future and are completely fascinated by his wife.

Thank you President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama – for finally returning pride and respect to The United States of America after many long years of shame. I am so proud to see you represent US Citizens, rather than watching thugs and liars speak for us.

The Country is with you Obama!

Evan   March 31st, 2009 10:06 am ET

After Bush's embarrassing debacles overseas and at home, having an articulate, coherent, non-dismissive president is a good thing to have. Now I don't know if world leaders respect Obama, but I think that they like him so far. The way other leaders detested Bush is not something I want to see happen to another president - that means not allowing the Supreme Court "select" another incoherent, babbling, walking embarrassment like Bush.

Watchful Cowboy   March 31st, 2009 10:05 am ET

There will be no shoes thrown at him.
Also, there will be respect for the fact that of all the leaders there his is the only economy coming out of the recession.
Also, he could beat them in an election in their respective countries.

Mississippi Mike   March 31st, 2009 10:02 am ET

The general public has been wrong before. Let's ask citizens of foreign countries these same questions a month from now and see what they think.

Mari   March 31st, 2009 10:00 am ET

I agree completely. President & Mrs. Obama are wonderful, brilliant and they share my values and vision for our Nation.

The majority of people in America, approve of the brilliant man who is our president during this........ crisis!

Regardless of what the critics spew, President Obama is doing the best he can. Obama was elected not to be a "caretaker" president, but to rebuild America, similar to what FDR did during the Great Depression.

I, for one, approve and am proud to have a president that shares my own values, respects the Constitution and is wise enough to know that "cowboy diplomacy" failed.

Vive la France   March 31st, 2009 10:00 am ET

Good teaser in "dissed". Any "dissing" may be directed at Sarkozy, who's threatened to "take his marbles and go home" should his plan for financial oversight fail. Britain, France and others oppose it. Just when you think France may have outgrown De Gaulle's "pouting", here we go.

Rick   March 31st, 2009 9:57 am ET

I certainly hope so. Obama's economic plans are literally destroying the US economy, why should Europe anchor its fate to ours.

Stephen Colbert   March 31st, 2009 9:56 am ET

Respect is why we voted him in. Look at his academic credentials. He's a hard worker and an intelligent man. And compared to the last guy...not even a comparison.

Peggy - TX   March 31st, 2009 9:55 am ET

The extraordinary approval ratings are not surprising. Obama speaks intelligently and knowledgeable on world issues in contrast to dubbua who was an embarrassment. In his first 70 days president Obama has proven to be a strong and effective leader. Sure we will continue to hear a variety of world leaders that will stand up against his policies, but that is to be expected and frankly Americans do not care what these world leaders have to say. To the vast majority of Americans who take a causal interest in politics, President Obama’s agenda is in sync with the needs of the average Americans and he projects commonly held American values.

DCSilb   March 31st, 2009 9:55 am ET

Dan, TX   March 31st, 2009 9:55 am ET

Add me to the list. I think Obama/Biden/Clinton are doing well with international leaders. Over the next year, we should see some action.

We should improve relations with Russia and Iran by carefully monitoring, but also allowing, Russia to help Iran build nuclear power plants while accounting for all nuclear fuel. Russia must take and recycle all the spent nuclear fuel.

Its true that world leaders respect the America President BUt they do not trust him and nor should the American people. I have said this for almost two years...please read the book that Obama is operating under...The Post-America World. Please take the time to gather insight into what EXACTLY this man plans on doing. You will see that he has already started down the road and hes taking us screaming with him.

Expat American   March 31st, 2009 9:51 am ET

It is the hope of many Americans that President Obama can restore the image, the dignity and the honor of the United States abroad.

It seemed the damage became irreversible under the Bush Administration; and would have undoubtedly been permanent had Sarah Palin been allowed to open her mouth on the global stage….It’s scary to imagine, the leader of so many racially and religiously bigoted and ignorant voices allowed to speak in such a forum.

Watch the videos of these people (Palin supporters at their rallies). It's saddening to see that these individuals almost seem proud to be so ignorant.

mother of a soldier   March 31st, 2009 9:51 am ET

I guess those polled are not reading or listening very much. The post election comments by these world leaders were not supportive and continue the negative trend. Maybe those of third world countries are supportive since there lies his heritage.

Frank Taylor   March 31st, 2009 9:18 am ET

The only true way the world will respect America or any of it's leadership is if the Bush administration is investigated, charged and convicted of the war crimes and crimes against humanity they committed.

If the latter is not done then regardless of who is President the entire world knows it is only 4 years away from being Bushwacked all over again.

Which Americans are you asking? I have NEVER been polled one single time and out of all these polls you'd think someone would ask me – but then again, since I'm not an Obamaholic, I guess that explains it – you poll takers only want to poll people who support him.

It can't be any less than Bush. I think that either major party candidate from the November election would have gotten more respect than Bush was getting when he left office. It makes a certain amount of sense that it is happening because Bush just went it alone (taking the rest of the country along for the ride). Cowboy diplomacy didn't work in Star Trek (Spock going to Romulus) and it won't work in the real world either.

His attitude was "My way or the highway" does not cut it in todays world.

It is quite apparent President Obama is in touch with people while Boy George was in his own little world.

Yet another poll that shows that the vast majority of this country is satisfied with our President. Combine that with the new Gallup poll which shows President Obama's approval at 66% and the ABC poll showing him at 64% and it pretty much puts an end to the argument that the people are turning against him.

Dutch/Bad Newz, VA   March 31st, 2009 8:26 am ET

I don't care if you're republican or democrat. When our President travels overseas, he represents this country and we all must support him. Even when the "shoe thrower' threw the shoe at Bush, as funny as it was, it was embarrasing to me as an American.

"He talks about a large stimulus campaign by Americans. All of these steps, their combination and their permanency, is a way to hell," said Czech Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek

They do respect him because he is one of the most respected politician on the planet!

LUISA FROM NYC NOW IN MD   March 31st, 2009 8:23 am ET

I am EXTREMELY proud and confident in my President, Obama, representing these United States of America abroad. At long last, I will NOT fear being embarrassed by anything my President may say; by the conduct of his wife (or even his daughters if they were to attend). President Obama KNOWS that he is measured by a "different" ruler than any other president in history. Not only by his own citizens, but also abroad. What most of you (his detractors that wish for his failure) fail to realize is that this man thrives on achievement; and if that achievement comes with ridiculously hard work, and standing up to the most minute of scrutiny President Obama is ready, willing, and able to deal with the challenge.

Why is it so hard for you so-called patriotic-country-first Americans to give this man a chance to improve things for the benefit of ALL OF US?

You go Mr. President!!!! MIllions of us are behind you, and we applaud all of your efforts on behalf of this great country of ours!!

beevee   March 31st, 2009 8:20 am ET

I don't doubt it at all. The president talks well, has a pleasant demeanor, and he is poised and polished. Everyone is looking up to him to lead and get all (worldwide) of us out of the economic slump.

DB   March 31st, 2009 8:18 am ET

What a wonderful feeling....to have a leader who is respected again! The last 8 years have been so awkward and embarrassing for those of us who travel for a living. The change that I have seen in just a few months has been astounding. This doesn't mean that everyone agrees with everything the administration does but at least our President can speak in complete sentences and provide thoughtful insight into the issues of the day. Not coming off as a holier-than-thou isolationist is icing on the cake. Have a great trip Mr. President; I for one think you are doing an incredible job under very difficult circumstances and feel very hopeful that your efforts and the efforts of your administration under your leadership will bring us to a much better place economically, socially, and morally. It will take time, I know, but I have abundant faith.

Only because they have to...

Just being "not Bush" gives Obama a 20 point edge in the poll.

Europians have alot more respect for President Obama, than George W. Bush. He is a newcomer there remember that. The EU does not blame him for the Global disaster, but the United States. Deregulating the Banking Industries is what caused this whole mess.

Hopefully the G-20 can put their heads together and put a huge bandaid around the world so this huge boo-boo can heal.

alvino   March 31st, 2009 7:55 am ET

I am hopeful that the leaders of the other countries have a positive image of Obama, and will be willing to work with him.

I cannot help but wonder if Obama can improve the feelings of the world toward us and overcome the damage that has been done to our country by an unjustified war and by the admission of torturing captives.

independent Jim   March 31st, 2009 7:28 am ET

Of course, foreign leaders respect him. He's a nice guy, he speaks well, and he's the leader of an important power. The real test starts at the G 20 meeting this week, however. Merkle and Sarkozy are dead set against "bailouts", and they are likely to be much more influential at G 20 than Obama.

Kim Hewson   March 31st, 2009 7:27 am ET

Pure propaganda. Obie is an empty suit.

decent american   March 31st, 2009 7:22 am ET

"americans believe" ?? isnt that the same arrogant attitude you accused amicans of before? why, i thought we had that fixed, we arent arrogant americans anymore with bush gone now right?.. oh wait, obama is wayyy more arrogant and we are even more arrogant right? same attitude, different focal point. you all need to a doctor for that arrogant streak.

danel   March 31st, 2009 7:15 am ET

It's a no brainer. When you listen to Bush strangle the English language is enough for some Americans to feel uncomfortable.

Fan of Common Sense   March 31st, 2009 7:11 am ET

Of course people of foreign countries love Obama. He wants the same thing they want: a weaker, less influential, more subservient U.S. They don't see him as an American president. They see him as an 'infiltrater' who will help them with their anti-American agendas.

proud army navy mom   March 31st, 2009 7:04 am ET

Our president is well-liked and respected among people who has a brain and a heart.

Even though Cheney goes around trying to undercut our president to Israel and foreign leaders. How is this not unpatriotic and treason?

Not Brainwashed   March 31st, 2009 6:59 am ET

Ofcourse the respect him! They know he was choosen by the globalist to be the new world President!

Both sides, Democrat and Republican are evil!

Cindy, PA   March 31st, 2009 6:55 am ET

In what nation did you take this poll ????
7 out of 10 where I work don't agree with this president, don’t trust this president, won’t support this community organizer / social worker president, sure, you keep asking the same question to the same people.

Fitz in Texas   March 31st, 2009 6:54 am ET

Oh, that's not what I'm hearing or reading

Truth Bomb Thrower   March 31st, 2009 6:51 am ET

World leaders see Obama as a useful idiot–someone who will capitulate to them and help them in their efforts to weaken the status of the U.S.

Renee   March 31st, 2009 6:15 am ET

Yes! the leaders respect Obama because they know President Obama is trying to get this country out of this economic mess. Just like one of the world leader had said, This country melt down has been cause by white people (blue eye) who throught they knew everything and found out they knew nothing!! Thank God for Obama who is trying to savage this mess.
