Reporters' hair irks Boehner

Boehner took time Thursday to critique reporters' hair styles.

Boehner took time Thursday to critique reporters' hair styles.

(CNN) - House Republican Leader John Boehner is known for regularly poking fun at reporters about their hairstyles. But at his weekly press conference on Thursday he couldn't contain himself.

As he launched into his regular refrain about the Democrats' budget, saying it "spends too much, it taxes too much, and it borrows too much", he stopped himself - trying to hold back laughter during his own opening comments.

He quickly singled out a young print reporter, telling him, "You really do need to do something with that hair of yours." As reporters laughed, he joked, "I couldn't wait any longer."

He went on to finish his opening comments, but before calling on the same reporter, he teased, "Get a brush, would ya?"

The reporter had good sense of humor about the crack from the Ohio Republican, and shot back, "I'll get a haircut if you pay for it."

When Boehner called on the next reporter, he referred to him as "the bald guy."

But Boehner didn't confine his critique to male members of the Capitol press corps. When a female reporter, wearing her long hair pulled back, prefaced her question by joking that she hoped her hair was ok, Boehner couldn't resist: "You mean what's wadded up in the back of your head?"

Some reporters chuckled, but others thought the GOP leader was being a little harsh.

Boehner continued his hair assessment, saying, "It looks so nice hanging down. It looks like you got up a little late and decided that, you know, I just wadded up the back. For those of you that don't know about me and ponytails, males get it - males get it just as bad as females."

He then apologized to the reporter, joking "you started it," and let her ask her question on the budget.

With Congress about to start a two week recess, Boehner blamed the long stretch of six straight weeks in Washington for his punchy mood and attempt to have some fun with reporters. "That's why I'm trying to be humorous today to my friend who needs a brush and a friend who needs some hair," Boehner said.

As reporters walked out of the press conference, one asked Boehner's press secretary what she put in the Republican leader's coffee this morning.

I apologize to the press for the rethugs. Seems like Sean and Rush's shows this morning were a little bit more hopped-up than usual and it's pushed the rethugs into "no" overload. Not only are they "no-ing" the Democrats, they're "no-ing" the press, "no-ing" their families. Hell, one of them even "no-ed" a lobbyist.

Boehner is just the Angry Old Man these days. He is in the minority and hating every minute of it. He really needs to slide for awhile. Full time obstructionism of the sitting Majority is going to just put years on his own thinning hairstyle.

    Get a Toupee!

So, I get it. As far as libs are concerned, its OK for Obama to make a joke about the mentally handicapped, and you all defended him. But, a Repub makes a joke about peoples hair, and it is a statement on his "bonehead" nature. I see how you all think. Poorly. You have no capability of playing by the same set of rules whether it be a D or a R. Now if this gentleman made a joke about mentally handicapped people, I can only imagine your response. It wouldn't be the same you gave Obama.

Look in a mirror, man! What a jerk. And once again the repugs have nothing new to offer, no new ideas, just making fun of people. And to the person who brought up another senator's visit to Brittney Spears concert, all I can say is "yuck, double yuck" How completely weird, and they are supposed to be elected representatives? Yikes!!!

Anything to distract the reporters from asking him about that ridiculous budget they submitted on April's fool day. I think Boehner just tries to hard to be the head of the republican party. He is a loser as far as I am concerned, Mr. Show boat!

Do you all know if he is tanned unnaturally or maybe this is just his real skin tone? I don't know much about the guy, so I honestly don't know. Some people are just naturally more tanned looking than others. Could be the case here. If it isn't a canned tan, or from baking in a tanning bed, and it is his normal skin tone, you all look like idiots for criticizing something he can't change. In which case you are just as silly as he is for criticizing people's hair.

Boehner has as mush right to make fun of how others look as Barney Frank does. Guys get a decent hair cut. But at least he doesn’t look like he dresses in the dark like Frank always does.

Boehner exemplifies a typical Republican politician...rude, stupid, clueless, arrogant, cocky. I would have said "excuse me? You said WHAT?" Boehner looks like the devil anyway so he certainly shouldn't talk. How much does he waste on haircuts...$1000? He should get his money back!

With the job market as crappy as it is and my paycheck as small as it is and my debt as huge as it is, my hair is the last thing on my mind. I'm not comforted to know it's the first thing on his.

Boehner always looks like a hung over fraternity boy. Unfortunately he acts like one too. He’s a male version of Sarah Palin. Just as tan and just as dumb.

I think this says a LOT about Boehner's character - he is demeaning and abusive of power. He sounds like that nasty bully from high school trying to put everyone down to build himself up. This isn't rapport with the reporter - it is abuse!

Do we really really want to vote bullies into office?

Boehner's skin is too permanently parched to even break a tiny smile, let alone crack a joke, which he hasn't done in a lifetime. Seems that the only thing the sore losers have left, are insults, because they've offered no ideas other than "NO!". FYI to Boehner: There are more people that can be voted out of office next round, and uh, that could be you, Mr. Plastic hair.

House Republican Leader John Boehner has nothing better to say than a bully on the playground!
It's not a joke, it's mean, aside from the hair comment, he also pointed them out for all to laugh at. For anyone to think this is OK, they do not belong up front in public. We have serious problems, we need to be working on, not making fun of someone.
Didn't his mother teach him any better? Are these GOP’s values?
