Poll: Americans think Obama helps image abroad

WASHINGTON (CNN) - President Barack Obama earned high marks for diplomacy during his first overseas trip, and a majority of Americans think that he will return home Tuesday with some accomplishments in his pocket.

A large majority, 79 percent, said people in other countries will have a more positive view of the U.S. because of Obama, while only 19 percent said it would be more negative, according to a CNN/Opinion Research Corporation Poll released Monday.

Asked whether Obama has accomplished anything on his trip, 16 percent said that he had accomplished a great deal, while 45 percent thought he had accomplished a fair amount during this trip that took him to the European Union Summit in the Czech Republic, the G20 Summit in England, and the NATO Summit in France.

"The American public seems to think that Obama's primary achievement on his trip so far was increasing goodwill rather than winning specific concessions from other countries," said CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. "Obama seems to have made a good first impression on the world stage, and Americans appear to have noticed."

The president is in Turkey Monday meeting with that country's lawmakers. This is Obama's second foreign trip since being sworn in as president. He visited Canada for a day trip in February.

The CNN/ORC Poll of 1,023 adult Americans was conducted April 3- 5 of plus or minus 3 percent.

Thank you Mr President. I was so proud of you and First Lady Michelle. You said the things that needed to said and now we can move forward. The world can see the USA as a nation of honor and strength, not as an international arrogant bully.
Anyone who says otherwise is a bitter hateful loser left over from the 2008 election.

Improve our image? Of course he does. That's not saying much after the last eight years, though...

Finally Americans can be proud of their President. Bush was a disaster to our relations with the world. For the first time Americans were hated around the world because of our invasion of Iraq. President Obama has done a wonderful job representing Americans. Bush will go down in history as the worst President of the free world!

Robin says "He made us look like wimps". I strongly disagree. The previous president made us look like idiots. Given the choice, I prefer wimp.

Once again proving how out of touch the right wing is–as they huff and puff about Obama insulting and embarrassing Americans while abroad. Apparebtly not according to the majority of American people.

  7. Dont blame me

    Sure, he's improving our image.

Obama is telling them everything that they want to hear and continues to appologize for America, continuing his BLAME AMERICA FIRST policy.

If they like him so much over there, why doesn't he just stay there????

People abroad are not stupid.....most see him as a clown, a yes man as it were. As a politician for the last few years, he has accomplished nothing but get elected with BS and a silver tonge. The only real change we have seen is a different president. By the way.... I belong to no political party, I think they should be arrested.

Obama's sincerity and warmth came through loud and clear, along with Michelle's. We should be very pleased indeed that they are our President and First Lady. And don't be fooled, haters. He can be tough when and if he has to. We know you would like to think he is "soft" because he didn't run around the world threatening to "bomb you back to the stone age if you don't go along with us" the way Bush's lackeys did (Richard Armitage to Pervez Musharraf after 9/11). But, I have no fear that this man, along with his strong administration, can protect us from any enemies around the world. We should just be glad we have far fewer enemies with him as President than we had previously!!

Well of course it helps. If you were a European, would you want an american president lecturing you, or apologizing to you for offending your sensibilities? Stupid question.

People who complain either dont understand or conveniently forget that diplomacy and fixing relations to get things done take alot more than one overseas trip. Obama supporters, remember to have some realistic attitudes and dont expect him to move mountains. Obama detractors, first you complain that he is being held up as a savior and then you complain when he isnt one.

That 27% that thinks Bush and Cheney were great and hate Obama apparently don't work because they post all day. The man has done a fantastic job. He is working harder earlier than any President I can remember. At least give him that.

Barak is the antithesis of Bush. Bush was reviled and looked upon as everything that`s wrong with America.

How does President Obama help our image abroad? Let me count the ways:

    1. He's replacing an internationally unpopular president..
Does this need further explanation? Big Bird could have been elected and have improved our image over the outgoing president.

    2. He's not white.
The average American doesn't seem to understand that 95% of the people in the world have brown skin. They aren't Christian, either. Just having a non-white president boosts our credibility tremendously. We suddenly go from a country of white people in suits to real, living people others around the world can relate to.

    3. He is well-spoken and articulate.
Again, this is a huge improvement over the previous president. President Obama can pronounce "Pakistan," 'nuclear,' and "strategy" correctly.

    4. He won the election outright, thereby demonstrating popular support.
See international coverage of the 2000 and 2004 elections, where our election process was mocked ceaselessly by the foreign press.

    5. He appears to be competent.
He can pronounce "strategy" and "nuclear." The world's perception of our country just went up 40 IQ points.

    6. He has lived abroad.
Remember that President Obama is from Kansas, but grew up in Indonesia, Africa, and Hawaii. President Obama gets the home field advantage in Southeast Asia, Europe, and Africa.

    7. He has close family on other continents.
Africa suddenly cares about our politics a lot more than usual.

    8. He understands other cultures.
Diplomatic relations ought to go much more smoothly with a president who knows how to behave. Bonus points for foreign affairs.

    9. His administration is allowing the press transparent access.
The foreign press don't have to decipher what's coming out of the white house press office.
