Poll: Americans think Obama helps image abroad

WASHINGTON (CNN) – President Barack Obama earned high marks for diplomacy during his first overseas trip, and a majority of Americans think that he will return home Tuesday with some accomplishments in his pocket.

A large majority, 79 percent, said people in other countries will have a more positive view of the U.S. because of Obama, while only 19 percent said it would be more negative, according to a CNN/Opinion Research Corporation Poll released Monday.

Asked whether Obama has accomplished anything on his trip, 16 percent said that he had accomplished a great deal, while 45 percent thought he had accomplished a fair amount during this trip that took him to the European Union Summit in the Czech Republic, the G20 Summit in England, and the NATO Summit in France.

"The American public seems to think that Obama's primary achievement on his trip so far was increasing goodwill rather than winning specific concessions from other countries," said CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. "Obama seems to have made a good first impression on the world stage, and Americans appear to have noticed."

The president is in Turkey Monday meeting with that country's lawmakers. This is Obama's second foreign trip since being sworn in as president. He visited Canada for a day trip in February.

The CNN/ORC Poll of 1,023 adult Americans was conducted April 3- 5 of plus or minus 3 percent.

The President and his wife deserved a score of A+. They managed their first trip abroad with flying colours. It is sad to see that the rest of the world embraces President Obama and wants to work with this brilliant man. The only country who seem to always want to tear him down is his country, the USA. The media wanted to see him fail. The US didn't care whether he was trying to help his country get out of the mess that was left to him to clean up, they were concerned about if he screwed up. Shame on you America. No wonder you are so hated around the world and your country is in a mess!! You are too shallow. I wonder if the US is ready for anyone other than a "blue-eyed white sink male?" The old fogies in the US needs a reality check. There is hope however in the younger generation – they have more vision.

I'll say it before and I'll say it again, this tired "How our image looks abroad" is intellectually stupid. What other country cares what they look like to us, i'll tell you, NONE. They go about their business not caring what America thinks about them, they do what's best for their country first, which is fine. We are the only ones dumb enough to actually care about this media induced form of guilt. I like my country, and could care less what others think about it, I live here, I work here and I love my country, just like every other person who lives in there country. Since we are supposedly number one, I don't care to have my country "liked" by others by saying we are sorry and everything is our fault in order to make other nations feel better about themselves.

WHY exactly do you care about our "image"??? Seriously – what did Obama get us?

Are other countries sending more troops to Afghanistan? (nope)

Are other countries putting up significant stimulus dollars? (nope)

Did any of this "new image" give North Koreans pause in violating the UN resolutions and firing off a missile? (nope)

So EXACTLY what does this new image get us??

Right and then you have the following who are destroying your image abroad:

    Rod Blagojevich
    Hillary Clinton
    Nancy Pelosi

God, the list of fallen democrats is endless!!!!!!!!!!!

@ ck, who claimed "The vast majority of those I have spoken to are HUGELY DISAPPOINTED in Obama."

Leave your backwoods rural conservative town that is afraid of black people and foreigners and get out in the real world for once please. Breadth and depth of experience is required for understanding the world...not constant affirmation that your assumptions and stereotypes are correct.

Who are these Americans who think Obama helped our image abroad? There aren't any around these parts. We all think he displayed such a weasel-like, sneaky-snake, coward image that the USA's image shrunk back to Carter's time when the Iranians laughed in his face and even rabbits attacked him.

Of course he made himself look "great" all he did was bash America! The same thing Europe and Asia have been doing for the past several years, it doesn't take a genius to do that, but his constituents’ still believe that he did some remarkable thing over their.

He even declined to call Armenian deaths in World War I a 'Genocide'
and guess what, some Americans support that idea, go figure? They say that it happened so long ago that you should leave it alone. Well if that's the case, then let's also forget that slavery ever existed in the U.S. as well, and let us move on.

The right just doesn't have ANYONE who can touch Obama, so they will continue to oppose EVERYTHING he does and use hollow terms to describe him and his actions.

The thing that hurts the most is the fact that in a few short months Obama beat the Clinton machine, something that the Republicans spent 8 years trying and failling.

Europeans didn't like Bush because he stood his ground and was patriotic. They love Obama because he is the total opposite and always has to make excuses for our country.

He made us look like reasonable adults on the world stage again after the infantile behavior of the Bush regime over the last eight years.

Sure, Europeans also want to have some fun. Anyway, after Mr. Bush, anyone would improve America's image. Just that you could do much better .. and you didn't.

President and First Lady Obama have definitely enhanced our image throughout the world. The President has changed to dialog to "we" instead of "I" to brand the US for the future. The terms "inclusiveness" instead of "exclusion", mutual respect" instead of being "dismisive" to include "religions".

The world sees the First Lady as energetic, fashionable, smart, engaged, honest, caring, thoughtful, a real beacon of hope to the younger generations. They see the Obama's as the epitome of what a world acting and working together at all levels can be.

Oh wait....I know why some think he failed. It was because he didn't throw up a "Mission Accomplished" banner. Republicans need that to know when they should cheer.

  16. 31% of Americans are TRAITORS for wanting America to FAIL and 69% of Americans to SUFFER!

President Obama gave the electorate his vision of what he would do to change. We elected him 53% to 46% to bring that change. We do not want leaders that only malign the government and try to starve it by lowering taxes without actually fixing it, we want someone that will FIX the government so the current tax dollars we spend will be spent efficiently. He is fulfilling his campaign promises made to the majority that voted for him, just as we would expect him to. Repubs call it big government, Dems call it caring.

So, neo-cons President Obama is doing exactly what we elected him to do.

And in the latest poll 79% of APPROVE of the results of the overseas trip.

I know you are frothing at the mouth that President Obama is so popular, ya just cannot stand it!

Keep you the hate, you will have 8 long years!

making small talk and doing something are 2 diffrent things. they all liked him and his smile but the leaders at the g20 also seemed like they thought he was the greenhorn to me. all hugs and no support is not accomplishing anything

Its only the Republicans who think Obama didn't accomplish anything and thats because they're all doom and gloom by nature.

    Obama has made things better.

"GREAT JOB' time is very important. Nothing great happens quickly,
it takes tack. Obama did a terrific job, watch the next time. America's hatred is going to be her "downfall"

It wasn't respect that we earned around the world from this visit as much as it was infatuation with Obama.

Nothing really substantial was accomplished. N. Korea set off a nuclear rocket during a speech being given about nuclear proliferation.

Countries aren't flocking to help us in Afganistan but rather will send in token people to train. Alot of good that will do our soldiers who will be in harms way.

The only thing that really came out of this was the fashion of Michelle Obama and the touching of the Queen! Big deal!

what are we supposed to look like?

What I want to know is this–who are the 19% who think Obama's didn't help the US? He is clearly the leader of the world now, in a way Bush never was, and that can only be good for America.

Some people could see Obama walk on water and complain that he was getting his shoes wet. For those people, nothing he does will ever be good enough.

    To CK:
    "WHAT POLL????

The vast majority of those I have spoken to are HUGELY DISAPPOINTED in Obama."

Duh, its because you hang aroung with people who think exactly like you and verify each other in their "correctness and rightness." Get out and talk to some different people. You can't look at the scenes in Europe and not know the rest of the world is so happy the American people got smart and sent an intelligent person to the White House, instead of a "silver-spooned" bully who thought he was playing Cowboys and Indians for 8 years.
