Poll: Americans think Obama helps image abroad

WASHINGTON (CNN) – President Barack Obama earned high marks for diplomacy during his first overseas trip, and a majority of Americans think that he will return home Tuesday with some accomplishments in his pocket.

A large majority, 79 percent, said people in other countries will have a more positive view of the U.S. because of Obama, while only 19 percent said it would be more negative, according to a CNN/Opinion Research Corporation Poll released Monday.

Asked whether Obama has accomplished anything on his trip, 16 percent said that he had accomplished a great deal, while 45 percent thought he had accomplished a fair amount during this trip that took him to the European Union Summit in the Czech Republic, the G20 Summit in England, and the NATO Summit in France.

"The American public seems to think that Obama's primary achievement on his trip so far was increasing goodwill rather than winning specific concessions from other countries," said CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. "Obama seems to have made a good first impression on the world stage, and Americans appear to have noticed."

The president is in Turkey Monday meeting with that country's lawmakers. This is Obama's second foreign trip since being sworn in as president. He visited Canada for a day trip in February.

The CNN/ORC Poll of 1,023 adult Americans was conducted April 3- 5 of plus or minus 3 percent.

The man can't bow to the Queen but he sure can suck up to Muslim countries. That's a real big plus, isn't it (NOT)?

I see the Obama haters are out in full force. I have yet to see a credible claim that he didn't do awesome on his trip. Even if he had went out and secured world peace, people would find something to complain about.

President Obama DOES help our image – and anyone that denies it is lying to themselves.

You all [mainstream press] make it easy for him to look good, but that's what you're there for isn't it?

The President is doing excellent on the world stage! Goodwill is extremely important. We need goodwill in order to accomplish our goals. Republicans forget that without goodwill after 9/11, we would have never gotten other countries to help us out in the unjust war waged in Iraq. At least this President respects other countries and they respect him! Goodwill for America is finally in abundance!

Wow! Where were all of you while Bush stupidly occupied the White House? Where were when he deregulated banking, food safety, the environmental protections, etc. Obama has provided more leadership in 100 days than Bush did in 8 years. Decisive, intelligent, able to communicate. Do you really think any President walked away from these conferences with signed deals in hand. It takes time and you will see the success.
Bush played so many of you for fools. You blindly followed him despite the fact that he lied about so many things. You loved him for his "conservative" views and you let the country go down the drain while the Republicans focused on stem cells, gay rights and the poor Schaivo (sp) woman in Florida. Take a look again at the speeches of Bush. Sad and embarrassing for all Americans. A true Jester.

  12. I can think for myself. Can you?

The power of so-called 'goodwill'? Yeh, right.
The British and French governments were willing to sell the Czechs down the river in order to build 'goodwill with Hitler.' Be careful what you wish for......

Memo to loony left Bush haters: FYI – the election is over. Obama won and now has to be judged according ot the present and future, not the past. Do you really think policy makers around the world will simply roll over for President Obama just becasue "he is not Bush". Try to be a little less myopic and more forward looking.

I could care less what "our image" is abroad. What I do care about is our national security and economic well-being. Obama is well on the road to being a total failure in both areas.

We all be so proud of our President. Obviously those who hate him for whatever reason will always repeat what the uninformed and uneducated say on Fox News. Pres. Obama is smart, articulate and he does not have to flex American muscle to let the world know we are a world power. What was it that Bush used to say "nucklear" and wait that is all he used to say. To the pundits – read and educate yourself before you spit out the same nonsense Bush and his hatemongers used to spit out.

He has also helped Washington's image here at home.

George W Bush thought government was the problem and he left office having proven his point. Obama thinks that government can help....even if he is only 1/2 right we will be much better off.

19 percent said that the world would have a more negative view of the US after Pres Obama's visit? Are these people for real? Are we watching the same coverage of the meetings on TV? I suspect they haven't watched a thing during these days, they just take the talking points of those who relentlesly criticize as "facts". Why bother thinking when you have other people telling you what to think...pathetic.

As usual the Republicans cannot stand to see a person of Mr. Obama's intellect, brains and comandeering personality as they have no one to compare him to. He can complete a full sentence and understands the world view.

George Bush was a joke to the world. Finally we have a President who we can all respect.

... Did they think for one minute he could go over there and bully his way into getting what everyone wants? It's been proven that the bully pulpit doesn't work. So, back off repubs! Let our elected president do his work- HIS WAY. Your way nearly destroyed us."

Psst Helena, that's not what "bully pulpit" means. A little reseach would have prevented you from looking foolish.

What did he accomplish? A few photo ops, a nonbinding agreement to do something about the economy, and an agreement to talk to Russia about arms control which continued a process started 5 presidents ago. Oh, and a whooping 5000 extra troops from NATO for Afghanistan when they should contribute 10 times that amount. Of course he did set new records for blaming America for everyone's problems.

  22. Independent starting to doubt Obama

I sure dont. I would rather have a president that does whats right (GW BUSH) rather than whats popular any day of the week. Obama thinks its a popularity contest around the world the naive idiot doesnt realize that no matter what you do for some people that they are just not going to accept us or like us. When you try to please everyone you please NO ONE. Obama needs to GROW UP.

We are Proud to have Obama as our President.

We are Ashamed that Bush was our President.

    Bush disgraced America.

Bush's IQ is lower than a 4th grader.

Bush and his Father put us in War when they were Presidents.

There are a lot of idiots trolling CNN today!!! Obama campaigned on healing the wounds of division from Bush. No surprises here. All you trolls are complaining that Obama did this at the expense of Bush. Well, yeah he did! How else was he supposed to heal the wounds that were slashed into almost every other Nation in the world by our former nightmare of a Prez. Duh!!!! How else was he going to "heal these wounds"?

We are only wounded because of Bush. So naturally, attacking those moronic policies is the only way to "heal the wounds".
