Clinton 'deeply concerned' about pirate attacks

Clinton called for international cooperation to combat piracy.
Clinton called for international cooperation to combat piracy.

WASHINGTON (CNN) - Secretary of State Hillary Clinton late Wednesday called for international cooperation to combat piracy like this week's attack on a U.S. ship and crew off the coast of Somalia.

"We are deeply concerned and we are following it very closely. Specifically we are now focused on this particular act of piracy and the seizure of the ship that carries 21 American citizens," Clinton said at the State Department. "More generally we think the world must come together and end the scourge of piracy."

The secretary of state, speaking at a photo op with the Foreign Minister of Morocco, referred back to problems with piracy that both countries had faced together back in the late 1700s. "I think Morocco was the very first country that recognized us, going back a long time. We worked to end piracy off the coast of Morocco all those years ago. And we are going to work together to end that kind of criminal activity anywhere on the high seas," Clinton said.

Maybe she should offer to trade Bill for the hostages.

Find them. Kill them without mercy or reporting it to the press. Treat them with the respect they've earned. When the pirates fail to return from their missions, perhaps there will be some new career choices made in Somalia. Perhaps fear and decimation will be an effective deterant?

America is a joke. Whenever you are in trouble you call for international cooperation. These people didn't start today.

If we go after pirates can we at least keep a few of them around for novelty's sake?

lol.. Good job, Hillary. Sit back, watch, say you're "deeply concerned" or "troubled" by things that go on, so it LOOKS like you're doing a good job, when actually you are doing and accomplishing nothing.

We all know this position is simply a detour in getting to the White House for you, just like being a Senator was.

Just sit back, play nice, and plot until you can run in 2016. You might be pretty old by then, though....

Yes, let's look into the feasibility of employing some of those piratical types to patrol the waters.

The U.S. will get involved when an aircraft carrier gets stuck in the Suez canal by a bunch of fishing vessels...

She needs to be careful, let's not forget that Bill Clinton botched Somalia while he was President.

Clinton certainly has misplaced values. She is more concerned about commerce than the 40 million babies murdered by abortion in the U.S. and the countless other atrocities worldwide.

She had better apologize for causing them problems quickly or Obama will have to do it. I am sure she will have some phony data like Americans supply 90% of the illegal weapons to the pirates, so it is the fault of America.

How Obama reacts to this will show just how weak this president really is.

Something needs to be done about these so-called "Pirates". I think they need to be dealt with otherwise they are going to take things to another level and then MORE idiots will start following suit.

ALL COUNTRIES need to STEP up their game and start hunting these fools down. If we don't, were going to end up having a bunch of "thugs" on the high seas attacking folks left and right....

    ENOUGH ALREADY!!!

George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and many many more have all expressed concern about pirate attacks and all have never done anything about it except pay the pirates ransom and move on. Lets see if Hillary actually recognizes that standing idle will never solve this problem.

"Deeply concerned" doesn't cut it. Here's a clear case where Obama must say, "You don't take Americans hostage. Period"

Geeze - why the hell won't he?

All we have to do in every instance is to send in the Delta Force Squad or any of the available Elite Squad with a primary misson to take none of the Pirates in custody but shoot them on site, destroy their Mother Ship and I willing to bet, this maddness will stop.

This is the problem with this administration. They want to believe that the world is just one happy place where everyone loves eahcother. They don't have a realistic perception in regards to the dangers facing America. And then something happens and they come out and say they are "deeply concerned"??? Oh ok, now I feel better because Clinton is "concerned".
