Oops! Obama’s press office has an e-mail snafu

Members of the media got a behind-the-scenes look at what goes into President Obama's schedule.
Members of the media got a behind-the-scenes look at what goes into President Obama's schedule.

(CNN) – The White House Press Office accidentally e-mailed a draft version of President Obama’s Thursday schedule on Wednesday night that included the back-and-forth between White House staffers.

The e-mail – sent on a daily basis to inform the media of the next day’s events – at first appeared like any other press schedule. But at the bottom of the e-mail, there was a series of exchanges from the press team, as well as a draft of the schedule.

The first section of the schedule noted that Obama planned to hold talks in the morning with homeowners who have re-financed their homes and benefited from lower mortgage payments.

One staffer recommended changes to that line to “put more emphasis on the real people aspect of this.” The draft version said Obama will hold talks “with his economic team” and also attending the meeting “will be a handful of households.” The final version took the emphasis off the economic team and said "Attending the meeting will be a handful of homeowners. .. as well as members of President Obama's economic team."

The draft schedule also showed the president hosting Seder to celebrate Passover. The dinner was marked “closed press,” meaning no reporters allowed.

One staffer asked, “Can we remove the dinner at the end of the day?”

“We put it on yesterday’s deal – so folks already know that it’s happening. They’ll wonder why it’s not listed if we don’t include it on there,” another staffer replied.

The staffer who asked to remove the dinner from the schedule replied, “Apparently Jewish here and in neighboring states are now calling wondering why they have not been invited.”

The dinner was not listed on the final schedule.

In another exchange, one staffer recommended nixing a line about Obama meeting with leaders from the Veterans Service Organizations and Military Service Organizations since the president was now meeting with them before his remarks in an event closed to the press.

“Can we keep it and just change it to say before. Its good for us to say we are meeting with them,” another replied.

The final copy kept the line, noting that the VSO and MSO leaders would meet with Obama before his remarks.

Generally this would be a security issue, but since Obama is so ineffectual it is nothing to be concerned with.

Who cares? Do people think staffers don't make notes to each other about the President's schedule and how to organize things?

The dinner is not listed on the final schedule? Maybe they gave it up for Lent.

Ha... What a stupid blunder. And these are supposed to be the nation's best and brightest?

I learned a very long time ago in the corporate environment, when you save an e-mail as a draft, you NEVER put the address list in the "To" field... you always either save it in the body of the message or in a separate text file.

Not that it matters. This is an ignorant story anyway. Who in God's name would care about something like this, anyway?

If this had happened to Bush the bloggers would be posting nonstop about incompetemence at every level of the administration. But here it barely rates a "ho-hum". Bunch of hyposrites.

I guess the poll numbers came in yesterday so the staffers can once again revise Obama's core beliefs, which is what they are paid to do.

Stacy–Yes, sometimes Christians do have a Seder. We do this in recognition of our faith's roots in Judaism. Jesus and his followers were Jews. Of course, in the President's case, I believe the White House Seder has Jews and Christians in attendance (perhaps other faiths, too.)

So what? President Obama respects all religions, even though he himself is a christian. He honors the beliefs of the Jewish, the Muslim, the Hindu; or what ever religion a free American chooses to help them in their lives. He hasn't said so, but I bet he even honors those of us, who choose not to be religious. You have to be so careful these days not to offend anyone, that the staffers have to discuss it.

I agree, of course, that piracy is wrong but I wonder about Hollywood's movies glorifying the "Pirates of the Carribean." Is this proper fare for young minds? Piracy has been wrong down through history, no matter which country engaged in it.

I am beginning to think we have lost our free speech in the US. It seems we are given different scenarios in every political event depending on whether the offenders are considered "allied" or non
"allied." Even the comments are modified.

No less a pioneer than CNN's founder, Ted Turner, made a comment on the air that he started out believing that Alexander the "great" was someone to be emulated, but now believes that it is the good people in the world who should be given recognition. I am a senior older than Ted, but I always liked him.

I would like to see a new history presented to our young people. Instead of starting with the history of Alexander the "great" whose claim to fame was that he orchestrated the killing of seventy thousand innocents before the age of thirty, along with a host of murderous emperors and monarchs, I think our children should have a history of all the good doctors, scientists, teachers and others who made the world a better place.

Ok, this is dumb. Why should I care about the dinner for Passover? They can do what they want. The "snafoo" is so small that it shouldnt warrant any kind of news coverage.
