News of the arrival of the new first puppy has already caused a partisan split between Newt Gingrich and CNN Contributor Donna Brazile.

WASHINGTON (CNN) – Former Republican House Speaker Newt Gingrich weighed in Sunday on news that the first family has finally settled on a new puppy for daughters Malia and Sasha.

“I hope that the girls love the dog,” Gingrich said on ABC’s “This Week.” “I hope the family – and all the pressure they’re going to be in – finds it useful. And I think that this whole thing is fairly stupid.”

The six-month-old puppy is a Portuguese water dog that the Obamas have decided to name Bo. The dog is a gift to the first family from Massachusetts Sen. Ted Kennedy, a longtime Obama political ally who also owns several dogs of the breed.

“It’s great that they have a dog. It’s great that the kids are adjusting,” Gingrich said. “And where they got it from – who cares? It’s a nice gesture on Senator Kennedy’s part to give it to them but who cares?” Gingrich added.

Perhaps it was a partisan difference, but Democratic strategist and CNN contributor Donna Brazile had kinder words for the new first puppy.

“What’s not to like about this dog?” Brazile said Sunday on CNN’s State of the Union. “He’s cute. He’s adorable. But, I hope he’s potty trained,” she joked

Newt is exactly that, a newt. He's a dried up old man who knows nothing but 'tough' words and is just another 'dope for nope' idealogue. He knows nothing about governing as he did a miserable job as Speaker. A perfect negative chatter clown.

Joshua College Station Texas   April 12th, 2009 2:42 pm ET

I agree with Newt that it isn't really important compared to all that's going on the world, but why the bitter attitude? Why can't Americans just enjoy their president anymore? There always has to be negativity and some partisan-based fight. Why Newt, why?

Newt is just trying to get his face out there because he sees an opening in the party and thinks there is a chance for him to get back in the game. But if he is the best the Republican party has to offer, all I can say is, good luck!

Americans want leadership (that means someone who works for them and solves problems and makes positive things happen), and they will follow a middle-of-the-road leader who is focused on solving real problems and not just on party loyalties. Obama is doing that. The Republicans are more fixed on getting back into a position of ultimate and overwhelming power than on using the leadership they do have. Uh, there are hundreds of Republican officials with constituencies of millions of people who were elected to actually serve those constituents, and not just play political games with the other party.

Arwa   April 12th, 2009 2:42 pm ET

Hi mr old gingrich please go retire you dont own for ever political or power.let young american run the country, eventhough you do not like obama family becouse they are black, but never forgot american people they tired divided old white man agenda.America is imigrant land.

thanks.

Steven   April 12th, 2009 2:41 pm ET

Wonder why the GOP has to say anything about the dog. Maybe they don't have anything more useful to talk about. GOP use to stand for Grand Old Party, but now days it is more likely to me 'Glorious Old-fashion Pessimism'

michael (dallas)   April 12th, 2009 2:41 pm ET

if you dont care and you think it is stupid, then it was pretty stupid of you to feel the need to comment, newt.

thanks for your continued elevation of the national debate!

Rob   April 12th, 2009 2:41 pm ET

Newt....your day is done back off!!! Your right wing nut revisionist historian ideas have been proven wrong and after your side controlled the senate the congress and the white house for the larger part of 30 years we have war and economic crisis to show for it. Your party is wrong and its philosophy is wrong. Who cares about what you think even on something so trivial as a dog for the kids......

Roberta   April 12th, 2009 2:41 pm ET

I agree with Gingrich. I'm happy for the kids that they got a puppy but it's stupid to put so much "news" focus on it.

Chad   April 12th, 2009 2:41 pm ET

Leave it to a politician to spoil the fun. Let the girls have there moment.

red1952   April 12th, 2009 2:41 pm ET

You know what I find "fairly stupid"? Newt Gingrich.

democrat   April 12th, 2009 2:40 pm ET

As a democrat, I could not agree more. Get on with real issue CNN.

Ron Gee   April 12th, 2009 2:40 pm ET

Have the GOPs (Got 0 Plans) stooped so low as to kick the president's puppy?

Jacqui   April 12th, 2009 2:39 pm ET

Lighten up Newt. The family didn't cause this level of interest. Just be happy for them or is it too much for you?

Peter   April 12th, 2009 2:39 pm ET

We love our pets...whether it was LBJ's beagles, Socks, Millie, etc. we are fascinated by our pets. We spend huge dollars on them...we love them and they love us...Bo is in a long line of first dogs...may everyone be happy.

Elizabeth   April 12th, 2009 2:39 pm ET

It is so sad to see that the Obama's forgot they said they would get a dog from a shelter. Millions of dogs are killed every year because there are not enough homes and people continue to go to breeders. The Obama's could have helped. I was wrong to believe in the Obamas. Lies!

Turnstyle the II 1/2   April 12th, 2009 2:39 pm ET

I hope there are some straws left for my kids before these bitter, desperate republicans try to grasp them all.

Anonymous   April 12th, 2009 2:39 pm ET

Its a dog....let's move on

Joe the Student   April 12th, 2009 2:39 pm ET

Obama got a puppy. Yay.

In other news, we are facing the most dangerous economic crisis in 80 years and the President and the news media find canines more important.

lori   April 12th, 2009 2:38 pm ET

Wow Republicans don't even like puppies unless there's a tax cut attached to it.

Bill   April 12th, 2009 2:38 pm ET

C'mon, it's the kids first puppy! I'm sure Newt hasn't been that excited since his first, second or third wife. Or the several other "ladies" he took on test drives while he was still married. Newt probably hasn't made his children so happy since he left their mothers(pl).

republicans hate america   April 12th, 2009 2:38 pm ET

i guess the MISSION ACCOMPLISHED bull is more appropriate for the rush limbaugh party

Rick   April 12th, 2009 2:38 pm ET

It isn't any more stupid than GIngrich, Rove, Cheney et al, from the former Bush administration (or before) saying anything they can to get in the news.
You know fellas, don't go away mad, just go away. And keep your mouths shut.

Perhaps   April 12th, 2009 2:36 pm ET

If the G.O.P and their media didn't try to politicize everything the President does, this wouldn't be an issue

Don   April 12th, 2009 2:35 pm ET

Newt – The Grinch who would be President.

DallasTex   April 12th, 2009 2:35 pm ET

Newt may not care anything about the new White House dog. I've got news for ya Newt... Nobody cares about what you have to say. You are irrelevant. So shut the hell up, and go crawl back under that rock with the other lowlifes, Bush, Cheney, DeLay, and the head of your party, Limbaugh.

Right Wing Fringe   April 12th, 2009 2:35 pm ET

Is anyone surprised by this whacko's comments to a puppy? When you think of the many faces of the GOP...Gingrich, Cheney, Limbaugh, Rove, Delay, Hastert....two things come to mind....obese and heartless.

Only one thing would keep these fringenuts happy....tax cuts for billionaires. that will solve, global warming, nuclear prolfiration, budget deficit, wars, healthcare, education etc etc...

David S. Robins   April 12th, 2009 2:35 pm ET

Gingrich is definitely the Grinch who stole Christmas, or in this case, Easter. The man is truly loathsome.

Buddy San Diego   April 12th, 2009 2:35 pm ET

Newt Gingrich– I love that his parents named him after a lizard–they must have foreseen the future–but "I think this (Newt) whole thing is fairly stupid." and "who cares."

jim   April 12th, 2009 2:34 pm ET

I agree with Newt. The press focuses on the stupidest things.

Tony Justin   April 12th, 2009 2:34 pm ET

I guess when Newt Gingrich isn't telling his hospitalized-with-cancer wife that he wants a divorce so he can marry a younger woman, he terrorizes puppy dogs and kittens.

nancy   April 12th, 2009 2:34 pm ET

Perhaps Newt has forgotten in his isolated castle in the Beltway, that a lot of people in this country are suffering. Bad news is everyday news.

The delight of two little girls in a new puppy is simply a 'smile' break from the "Parade of Horribles" that Newt and his grand ole GOP led by GWB and Cheney left us with.

Let's not forget the Newt who divorced his wife on her deathbed so that he could marry the woman he'd been having an affair with. So much for even moral superiority.

Good grief.

DC-African in Colorado   April 12th, 2009 2:33 pm ET

And who cares about Gingrich's take?

ron grubman   April 12th, 2009 2:33 pm ET

Gosh, what a Scrooge! Newt, take a break and smell the roses for a minute.

ron

Mitch   April 12th, 2009 2:33 pm ET

It's nice to see that Gingrich is still an imbecile after all these years. He's useless, ignorant and fat....and those are his best qualities. Keep entertaining us Newt.

Laura   April 12th, 2009 2:33 pm ET

I think Newt is fairly stupid. I am glad he does not have better things to be concerned with then the new first dog. And I mean that.

Jerry   April 12th, 2009 2:32 pm ET

My God the Republicans need to learn to mask their bitterness a little better lol...

DC-African in Colorado   April 12th, 2009 2:32 pm ET

Gingrich is trying to get a fresh air out of the story.

Anne   April 12th, 2009 2:32 pm ET

Sounds like Newt didn't get his annual visit from his easter bunny!

Dennis   April 12th, 2009 2:32 pm ET

The first time I have ever agreed with Newt. I'm happy for the children, the puppy will most certainly enrich their lives but let's get on to the important things. I am amazed at how the media gets obsessed with issues like this and people are homeless and wondering how to make ends meet. It's time to get your priorities squared away and start talking about important issues and let this family alone.

Dennis

Kevin   April 12th, 2009 2:31 pm ET

I think a lof of people were interested in this story!! It's fun, it's really about the kids, and Newt just seems like a bitter old man. Oh wait, he is, he's a Republican!

Pel   April 12th, 2009 2:30 pm ET

There goes that old guy named Newt again. He continue to miss the mark. I would hope with the daughters having a dog, would inspire other people and children in particular to get an animal and love it. Also, this may inspire others to get a pet who is in need of a home.

Poor! Poor ! Poor Newt, he will continue trying to catch up. The world of enlighten ideas has past him by.

Paul   April 12th, 2009 2:29 pm ET

I seldom agree with Gingrich but he is right...the media hype over a personal family issue for the Obamas is beyond the pale.

And Gingrich would know...I suspect he is jealous because it takes the focus away from the incredibly stupid things HE says on a regular basis!

heather   April 12th, 2009 2:29 pm ET

newt is just a miserable old man! why shouldn't we be excited about a pet? it's not something new that the public show interest in the first dog! heck, when i was a kid i sent millie bush (the springer spaniel) a letter and i got a paw print signed post card back. i still have it! newt's a killjoy!

mvt   April 12th, 2009 2:29 pm ET

What a bitter person Mr. Gingrich is.

Ren from Baltimore   April 12th, 2009 2:29 pm ET

Dear Newt,

I hope you are enjoying your post-politics retirement, I guess, but I really don't care. Who should?

It's nice that you can still draw a larger crowd than any of the recent presidential hopefuls of your party. But, really, who cares? You guys are out of the picture, right? Isn't that what the voters said? You might sell be thinking, who cares?

We care. It is the people's country, not the politicians. It is Malia and Sasha's generation's country. If we can give them a little friendly space, by honoring the choice of their doggie, how is up to you, or anyone, to rain on that parade? To rain on any kid's parade?

You have had your turn in the light, and I, for one, don't care if we never hear from you again.

Tom in CA   April 12th, 2009 2:29 pm ET

...at 6 months the pup should be potty trained.

Too bad we can't say that for Newt.

Stratmaster   April 12th, 2009 2:28 pm ET

While this is a silly fluff story, we have had them about every president. We all knew Bush's dog. So the question is, why are Gingrich and the Fox clan so sensitive about this? Talk about bitterness and jealousy.

now...how about back to the economy, the war, etc.

Jon   April 12th, 2009 2:28 pm ET

What is next for Republicans? Are they going to actually stomp puppies to death at their next convention? I'm sure that'll appeal to their base, too.

Jeff, Huntington Beach, CA   April 12th, 2009 2:28 pm ET

Gingrich did not have much compassion for his wife either when he dumped her while she was on her deathbed. He and his kind never change... Hannity... Limbaugh... Coltier...

Cold... ice cold.

Mag   April 12th, 2009 2:27 pm ET

And I also think all this focus on Gingrich is fairly stupid!! Who cares what a Newt says or thinks?

pkw49   April 12th, 2009 2:27 pm ET

How interesting White House Press does not want to spend a lot of time on the President's bow to Saudi head of state, however, they are willing to spend hours on end covering the White House puppy!!!!

California Gold   April 12th, 2009 2:27 pm ET

Chill Newt. Your position on a young family getting their first puppy dog is solidifying the public's opinion that you are a sour faced, old grumpy Grinch of a Gingrich.

Mark   April 12th, 2009 2:27 pm ET

Only a republican could find a way to diminish someone elses pleasure. Policy differences notwithstanding, would it really have been that hard for Gingrich to just say "Its a nice dog"....without belittling that experiene?

Charles indallas   April 12th, 2009 2:26 pm ET

Didn't Newt take 7 years to get through college ? Didn't he marry his high school teacher (first wife) who was twice his age ? It looks to me like Newt is "fairly stupid".

Tom C in NY   April 12th, 2009 2:26 pm ET

Bloward Gingrich's own words could be used to refer to how lots of us feel about anything that such a slimy opportunist has to say: "Who cares!"

Ernie in LA   April 12th, 2009 2:26 pm ET

I surely am glad that a Democratic strategist hopes the dog is potty trained. I think this woman needs to do what she gets paid for and don't worry about the dog. These people are supposed to be highly educated professionals ( at least while they are in the public eye) but they can really act so stupid at times. Really makes you want to get an education.

Carmine Abbattiello   April 12th, 2009 2:26 pm ET

Newt, more people care about the Obama's dog than about what you have to say. How does it feel to be part afterthought, part laughingstock, Newt?

Cindy In Indy   April 12th, 2009 2:26 pm ET

This is great! The girls finally have their dog. Give them their day, Newt. You can deflate birthday balloons with all that hot air. Grow up! They are children for crying out loud!

Adam   April 12th, 2009 2:25 pm ET

Gingrich, who is this guy?

Buzz Daly   April 12th, 2009 2:25 pm ET

Why are people still interviewing losers like Newt?

What nobody cares about are his failed ideas and policies.

Can someone please tell these antiquated political hacks it's time to move on?

Thank you.

MK   April 12th, 2009 2:25 pm ET

What a great Easter present for the girls! A puppy brings nothing but pure love to a family. DOGS RULE.

Karen-phoenix   April 12th, 2009 2:25 pm ET

Gingrich is really, really jeleous!!! If he would have not had so many affairs and "tramped" around he might have a nice family, president and even dog now! Jeleous as what remains of the republican are!

Did   April 12th, 2009 2:24 pm ET

Graciousness, civility, courtesy, respect are all nice qualities to have, I must say, Mr. Gingrich.

JP   April 12th, 2009 2:24 pm ET

We knew this day was coming; the day when the media would be singing psalms about Obama's dog.
Who cares anyway?

Too True For You   April 12th, 2009 2:24 pm ET

"Who cares?" Newt is still singing the party line. They said "Who cares"? when they trashed any remnant of bipartisanship with hi Neocons and the win-at-all-costs Republican Revolution. They said "Who cares"? when the conservative capitalists rolled back financial regulation after regulation and led us into this mess. They said "Who cares"? when Bush repeatedly lied to America and the world about WMDs and committing American lives to a war without strategy. They said "Who cares"? when they allowed Bush to finance all of it off the budget. They said "Who cares"? when when mysteriously Cheneys firm Halliburton won no-bid contract. They said "Who cares"? when they violated ethical standards and federal laws in politicizing the judiciary. They said "Who cares"? when Bush appointed unqualified toady after toady to offices that eventually led to Katrina, the mess in the Middle East, the failed judiciary, and the financial crises. They said "Who cares"? when rabid right wing nut jobs where threatening Obama at Palin rallies. They said "Who cares"? when their 2008 VP had nothing going for her but looks and gender.

So, "Who cares"? about the Obama's dog? You set the bar so low, Newt, that even a story about the First Families dog is a heck of a lot better than any of the garbage you and your factless right legacy has been shoveling for past 25 years.

Rhys   April 12th, 2009 2:24 pm ET

Come on Newt, you cant be that bitter!! Can you? Caramba!!

indy voter   April 12th, 2009 2:24 pm ET

I care, Newton!

I am a dog lover and a children supporter and this human interest story is a fresh break from all the partisan politics "youse guys" are involved in.....

Just another republican comment that proves they are soooooo out of touch with the common American :)

ron   April 12th, 2009 2:24 pm ET

the most important part of this story is that CNN is able to use it to direct anger toward the republican party.

Doug, Atlanta   April 12th, 2009 2:22 pm ET

I totally agree. This country, the news outlets, and President Obama I am sure have more important things to worry about.

We have been hearing of the White House dog since the election so let's move on!!!

Margaret   April 12th, 2009 2:22 pm ET

"Who Cares?" what Newt Gingrich thinks about anything? He's ancient history.

I'm quite sure the former presidents had plenty of hype surrounding their pets over the course of their terms. Wasn't there 3 days of news over Bush's dog biting a reporter not too long ago? Is the Obama puppy important to how the country is run? No. Is it a pleasant thing to see such a good family welcoming a new member. Yes.

George   April 12th, 2009 2:21 pm ET

I agree it's no where near as important as letting Bin ladin getting away , killing thousands of Iraqis, wrecking the global economy and driving up gas prices over the past 8 years..............

J Johnson   April 12th, 2009 2:21 pm ET

Unfortunately, I am stuck with David Letterman's comment about this dog's pedigree when he referred to it as a "waterhead".

Ridiculous   April 12th, 2009 2:20 pm ET

We're out of things to attack Obama about so let's gripe about the dog.

Carl Justus   April 12th, 2009 2:20 pm ET

Gringrich would criticize Obama or anyother democrat for that matter if they could wave their hands and eliminate the massive republican national debt, make immediately Iraq a democratic government with all ethnic groups coming together and working together to solve any and all problems the country faces.

It they include Afghanistan in the mix and all the Taliban, Al Qaeda, and other terrorist would come and surrender their arms and go home to plant food crops to support all the people of the country and also elect a unified democratic government which they all would back one hundred percent.

Susan   April 12th, 2009 2:19 pm ET

Actually, Newt, it's YOU who are stupid and no one gives a rip what you think about anything!!!!!! For the rest of us, this is a delightful story, which brings a smile at times when the ways of the world and much of its evil ways cannot. Kindly keep your hateful comments to yourself and your disgusting Republican cronies!!

lorraine Rudowski   April 12th, 2009 2:18 pm ET

How sad that there are such unhappy people in this world that have to take time on this beautiful Easter weekend to make such a sarcastic comment about two little girls getting a puppy.
If Gingerich wants attention why doesn't he make a positive statement and see what attention he will receive. The press would be so shocked they might be afraid to print it.

Mark C.   April 12th, 2009 2:17 pm ET

Newt and the rest of the now-irrelevant GOP demonstrate their "being out of touch" for the world to see.

diva   April 12th, 2009 2:17 pm ET

Boy, what a sorehead Mr Gingrich is. Kids and puppies make most people smile. But losing Repubs can't stand that people like our president and enjoy a happy story now and then. We endured Ms Beasley, the Bush's dog, and others before. Take a deep breath, Newt, and get back to anger management classes.

Bob   April 12th, 2009 2:17 pm ET

I turned on CNN this morning to catch up on Pirates & Captan Phillips.
John King "the biggest story of the day is the Obama puppy".
What a disgrace. Easter Sunday,Pirates, Afghanastan...
I "will never watch CNN again".

JDOly   April 12th, 2009 2:17 pm ET

Yea who cares. Thats the leader of the Rep. party. That should be their motto. Who cares unless it lines my pockets with money. Who cares if the kids are adjusting, who cares about dogs and puppies and middle class and etc. WHO CARES. Sounds like a Bushy to me. When Reagans dog was in the white house he was an important part of the first family. Even though it was a pet. Same with Bo. The WHO CARES party strikes again.

Jeff, New York, NY   April 12th, 2009 2:16 pm ET

Wow! Barry said he was getting a pound dog. Turns out the pound dog wasn't good enough. This guy is so transparent, it scares me. Bows to Muslim kings, lies to no end. I'm getting the "Impeach Barry" stickers ready because it's going to happen before the 4 years are out. Don't get me wrong, he preached change in Washington and I was hoping there was going to be change. Now, i realize that the only change we're going to get is the change in our pockets from the taxes.

I just want a president who can tell the truth. If the guy was a farmer, an engineer, whatever (not a lawyer), I would vote for him. Honesty goes (and should go) a long way with me.

J Williamson   April 12th, 2009 2:16 pm ET

Oh lighten up Newt! What would you rather talk about – serving your ex-wife with divorce papers while she was a cancer patient? A new puppy seems more in line with those 'family values" you were so fond of espousing.

Darla (Edmonton, Canada)   April 12th, 2009 2:14 pm ET

The overkill of media hype on the acquisition of a puppy for the Obama family is a legitimate criticism.

But, I gotta tell you, Newt (and all the other ornery and clearly unhappy people who will respond on this story) ... it's kind of nice to have a story on the news that lightens the heart and makes us smile!

American   April 12th, 2009 2:14 pm ET

Who cares what Newt (I left my wife when she got cancer) thinks. He's jealous because he wants to be President. However, I don't think anyone would care what kind of dog he would get. Get over it Newt, you are not Obama.

Sam   April 12th, 2009 2:14 pm ET

Of course, by complaining about it, Gingrich brings more attention to this topic. Brilliant job!

La Chatte   April 12th, 2009 2:13 pm ET

Yes, Newt, the brouhaha over the dog is kind of stupid, but apparently Americans need warm fuzzies right now, thanks to the state of disaster the country's in as a result of the self-serving greed-mongering of the last eight years.

So, yeah, all this attention is on the silly side, but your statements merely serve to emphasize what a basically nasty person you are. You need to get over the FACT that your party was voted out by a large majority of Americans and move on. Do something to make things better instead of continuing to whine. The Bush administration was a nightmare and you're never going to convince most of the people otherwise. So suck it up, shut up, and do something constructive.

Farnk, Las Vegas   April 12th, 2009 2:13 pm ET

Newt is the very typical GOP talking head. He is against anything President Obama does. So the party of No even includes talking down the first families pet. The only thing is "fairly stupid" is Newt and the GOP.

Newt comes on to the scene with his 25 year Old ideas and I'm sure the GOP will follow him right off the cliff. If the GOP is concerned about their lack of elected officials now, just wait until 2010 when the republican party will look more like the republican group. America has changed, grown and now sees the GOP for exactly what they are. They preach fear and tax cuts and nothing else. 2010 can't get here soon enough.

Peter E   April 12th, 2009 2:13 pm ET

Yes, Newt, we get it. You want us to vote for you as president. Now would you please stop calling the media every time you have an opinion about something?

Ross   April 12th, 2009 2:13 pm ET

Gingrich's comments reveal his mean spiritedness and undermine his credibility as a critic of this administration. I am surprised that he would waste his political capital on such trivia. Better for him politically to have kept his mouth shut about an event that is irrelevant to matters of state but is surely of paramount importance to the Obama children.

dave   April 12th, 2009 2:13 pm ET

this is why he's fprmer speaker because of idiotic statements like this.

Mike   April 12th, 2009 2:13 pm ET

Biter old man.

mikeS   April 12th, 2009 2:13 pm ET

Thanks Newt for sharing your good will for the Obama family with everyone. You almost sound sincere. The nice thing about you versus so many other Republicans is, that you want President Obama's financial plans to help America's economy to succeed. You are truly the team player, way to go.

Mike   April 12th, 2009 2:13 pm ET

Look, partisanship doesn't make a difference here. Whether you're Republican or Democrat, it's pretty obvious that this whole media attention centered around The Obamas' puppy or the first lady's new dress has gotten out of control. Who the [expletive] cares? He's my president, not my buddy, and so I don't need to know his wife's bra size is or what his daighters had for breakfast yesterday morning.

John MacDaniel, Huntsville AL   April 12th, 2009 2:12 pm ET

What a great gift to the two children – and what kindness from a great statesman.

It is too bad that foolish people will make much about the gift – seemingly to get their name and picture in the news – but loosing their common sense in the process.

E.C.Coleman   April 12th, 2009 2:11 pm ET

Thank goodness, someone with intellect has spoken out about this ridiculous situation.
"The whole thing is fairly stupid.........." sums it up well!
The obamas keep stating that they want to 'shield their kids and have they grow up in a normal situation............."
Who are they kidding? Themselves?
These entire issues, the playset, the garden, the puppy...........has brought their kids 'front and center' unnecessarily.
Don't think everyone in this country doesn't think this.......
They get it!!!!

Franky   April 12th, 2009 2:11 pm ET

You see guys, I told you we'll send the Big Boys...I've never been so proud, Newt is right, who cares about the puppy, this is big news, LOL!!

By the way, where the hell did Newt came? He just bust out of nowhere, LOL!!

Later guys...

EB   April 12th, 2009 2:11 pm ET

Newt, don't you ever have anything nice to say?

dumbocrat alert   April 12th, 2009 2:10 pm ET

that is one hairy, ugly dog !

tony   April 12th, 2009 2:10 pm ET

What I waste of news space......both the story about the dog and Newt's comments – neither of those are news 99% of people could care less. Why not ask Newt about his multiple marraiges and how getting divorced and remarried supports "family values" and protects the "sancity of marraige?"

Brian   April 12th, 2009 2:09 pm ET

Newt is a funny man. He has good ideas and raises important issues, but does it in such an angry partisan fashion that you really can't take him seriously. It is a shame that he stands out as such weak leader when there exists such a gaping hole in republican leadership. If he were more thoughtful, patient, and...humble, he could possibly revive his political career.

The Death of America by Obama   April 12th, 2009 2:09 pm ET

m.obama doesn't like the little dog. Before she realized the camera and mike was on behind her she started to say something completely different but changed it when she say the camera. These people are such liars. Makes no difference what it is they both will lie.

A. Darton   April 12th, 2009 2:09 pm ET

I sense some bitterness from old Newt. I'm not going to waste my time with this guy, but I would love to tell him that I care, that's who. I am going to read up some more on Sasha and Malia new pup. I'm enjoying it. I remember what it was like when my son got his first puppy. I even like the name Bo. Take go care of the pup.

Dean Blythe   April 12th, 2009 2:09 pm ET

Reminds me of a saying: "The dogs bark as the parade slowly passes by."

Newt – the architect of the Republicans brief tactical victory in 1994, and their demise today.

amj in tx   April 12th, 2009 2:09 pm ET

i have to agree, who cares? it's great they got a dog, but there are much more important issues at hand than a new puppy for the kids.

Larry   April 12th, 2009 2:09 pm ET

As far back as I can remember, this media fuss happens whenever anyone in the White House gets a pet. Has Gingrich forgotten this? Just sounds like more whining from Grand Old Party of No.

For the record, I personally don't care about any presidential family's pets, but I'd bet my savings that if this fuss had been over, say, John & Cindy McCain's new pet in the White House, Gingrich would be singing a different tune...

linda abbott   April 12th, 2009 2:09 pm ET

gingrich sounds "completey stupid and jealous" of a puppy!!!
and as far as "who cares"??? who cares what you think anyway mr. gingrich –

if america and world wants to care – all i can say to you is – YES WE CAN!!!

newt. what a grinch. the future of the party.

Dawn   April 12th, 2009 2:08 pm ET

It's nice to hear the girls got their puppy!! You'll have a lot of fun with Bo.

Now, if the Republicans would just shut up and mind their own business! Good grief Newt......who cares what YOU think?!?

Robert Marshall   April 12th, 2009 2:08 pm ET

Newt is part of ancient history. at least the dog is current.

Illinois 2   April 12th, 2009 2:08 pm ET

For the news to be so hard to find, I have to agree with Newt, which by the way is a rare thing, there are far more important things going on in the world than a dog. I do hope the girls learn to take good care of what is their first dog.

terry   April 12th, 2009 2:08 pm ET

Gingrich doesn't want to read about the dog. I don't want to read about Gingrich. Neither is relevant to the national future, and that is what we sould be talking and reading about. Perhaps CNN should quit covering both of them.

Lynn   April 12th, 2009 2:07 pm ET

More stupid were Newt's and other naysayers and kneejerk reacters with their whining and criticizing that the president, the state dept.and the military didn't know what they were doing!! Once again President Obama and his team proved them wrong.

Baby-T   April 12th, 2009 2:07 pm ET

Can someone say "Killjoy!!"

Hopeful Optimist   April 12th, 2009 2:06 pm ET

I think Newt's neurosis is finally getting out of control. He is certainly not aging with grace - but of course he never had any. Typical conservative; doesn't grow old with class – just grumpiness.

bud in NC   April 12th, 2009 2:06 pm ET

Newt Gingrich- what a shameless hyprocrit. Sure the new dog is no big deal- just a human interest story. But it is the ever excited press that is making a big deal of it.
On the other hand, Newt could have just kept quiet. Why is he getting involved? He is trying to get his name in the news and voila- it worked. Who cares what Newt thinks about. it? Come you airheads in the press, Newt is using you for his political ends. When is sanity going to return to this country?

Gop   April 12th, 2009 2:06 pm ET

I happen agree who cares. It’s a dog for crying out loud.

If his girls enjoy it, that is what counts not what the public or media thinks.

I must say it’s a very cute dog. I do happen to think pet adoption would have been a better way to go.

But hey I hope all our happy with the choice and how is this a real news story may I ask?

Merrill   April 12th, 2009 2:05 pm ET

Not only is the GOP the party of "no"; it's also the party of "no fun"!!!

Friend of Puppy!   April 12th, 2009 2:04 pm ET

sounds like Gingrich is jealous he didn't get a dog from Sen. Kennedy. Will someone get the man a puppy please? He really could use one.

LMC in Seattle   April 12th, 2009 2:03 pm ET

Maybe the public is eager for good news after all of the bad news that Newt's party brought us!

Paulie Vegas   April 12th, 2009 2:03 pm ET

I'm a bleeding heart liberal and registered Democrat, but for once I agree with Gingrich. We have men and women dying in Iraq and Afghanistan, our economy's in the tank, North Korea test-fired another missile, Somali pirates are taking ships hostage...and the media is focusing on things like this silly puppy and Michelle Obama's fashion sense. Priorities, please!

Lando Griffin   April 12th, 2009 2:02 pm ET

We're Republicans! We hate everybody and everything, except stirring up wars and letting big business run wild. We hate Obama and any positive news story about him. We are like Mr. Potter in "It's a Wonderful Life", snarling at the world.

Johny   April 12th, 2009 2:02 pm ET

What a bitter old man.

John Sturgis, SD   April 12th, 2009 2:01 pm ET

Americans (most Americans anyway) really love their pets, and animals in general, unless your a republican who seems to want to kill anything they can, with a bazooka according to republican NRAers.
Newt G(rinch) should lighten up and do something constructive like pulling his head out of his butt. It takes all kinds, I'm sure anyone with the name like Newt can understand. Newt...great name for your pet lizard.

Powell   April 12th, 2009 2:01 pm ET

There's no benefit to Gingrich for seeming like a grinch

JM   April 12th, 2009 2:01 pm ET

So what he's saying is that the American people are stupid for their interest in the Obama's normalcy in getting a family dog? Is he saying that their "family values" are stupid? Interesting...

Judith F.   April 12th, 2009 2:01 pm ET

Grouchy Gingrich! Sour grapes, or just sour?

geoff in Virginia   April 12th, 2009 2:01 pm ET

Gingrich,

Get a clue, the girls earned the puppy – so leave them be!

etimo   April 12th, 2009 2:01 pm ET

Gingrich is yet to accept the fact that a black american is his president. He should just come and say it openly that he is a racist and jealous that a black American could be so intelligent enough to defeat all white opposition. Bloody racist that is what he is.

Anonymous   April 12th, 2009 2:01 pm ET

Isn't about time that al the partisan crap that is being spewed by people like Newt Gingrich, Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity stop. ALl they want is for President Obama to fail to makre themselves look better. If President Obama fails this country is in very serious trouble, stop trying to place blame on the opposing party and work together to get us out of this mess - or shut up.

cathy   April 12th, 2009 2:00 pm ET

I think Obama should stop acting like a celebrity and become a leader. Enough of what the wife wears and what kind of dog they have and what sports he watches and how quickly he can get to the Jay Leno show. Stop bowing to other leaders, no one cares that you have changed the china in your home and that you got tickets to your fav basketball team. Protect your country and your people, be a leader-step up to the plate, if you cant handle the heat-call President Bush!!!

Ananth Ranganathan   April 12th, 2009 2:00 pm ET

Obviously Newt Gingrich thought this was important enough to speak to the press about it. Ironically, if it was so incredibly stupid according to him, you would think he would just shut up and pay attention to things that he deems more important. Way to try and avoid the relative level of obscurity you have fallen to, Senator.

Michael Hippenhammer   April 12th, 2009 2:00 pm ET

Why do you even print anything that blowhard has to say. He is not worth listening to. Newt and his fellow Republicans have nothing but, mud to throw and no plan of their own. So why do we have to keep reading about them? As a dog lover, I applaud the Obamas for their choice to have one. I hope they have wonderful experiences with the new member of their family.

Mira   April 12th, 2009 2:00 pm ET

hey bo, welcome to the white house ! you are cute and lovely , i love your uneven 'white socks'.

David Long   April 12th, 2009 1:59 pm ET

What happened to adopting a rescue dog? I’m very disappointed in Obama. He told us it would be a rescue dog. Yet another false hope story from Obama. There are millions of dogs and cats in shelters that need homes. This could have been a very easy way to help promote adoption. Doesn’t Obama realize the world is watching his every move. I see this as yet another mistake. Too bad for all the homeless dogs and cats out there.

ChristopherM   April 12th, 2009 1:59 pm ET

Gingrich really shows who he is here. He can't just say something nice about those kids and the dog. He can't just not say anything at all because he's doing everything he can to stay in the news. No, he has to be a jerk about the whole thing. He has to throw something nasty in there, because that's who he is. Entirely predictable from someone who served one of his three wives with divorce papers while she was in the hospital with cancer.

Mitch Goldstein - Greensburg, PA   April 12th, 2009 1:59 pm ET

This is exactly as I have always perceived Newt: a mistaken solution searching for a problem. What do you suppose the Rethuglicans will do next to undercut Obama? Stay tuned...

Kaitlin   April 12th, 2009 1:59 pm ET

Oh please, Newt Gingrich. So, it isn't big important news. Who cares? Some people, especially dog lovers are interested. And yeah, they are the first family, so some people are interested in knowing what goes on – especially since they have 2 young girls (which we haven't seen in the White House in quite a while) who were taken out of their comfort zone and moved to DC. Some people do care. That's just the way it is. There isn't anything you can do about that. To each his own. It doesn't have an effect on you, Mr. Gingrich. So, it might be better if you just kept your mouth closed.

virginia for obama   April 12th, 2009 1:58 pm ET

I tell ya!!!!! Some republicans are some unhappy people, not all of them but a lot ot them. That's a very cute doggy I must say.

jon,philadelphia   April 12th, 2009 1:58 pm ET

The Gingrich who stole Christmas. I seem to remember similar hoopla over every presidential pet in my memory. This man is just plain miserable. He needs to sit down and shut up.

DB   April 12th, 2009 1:58 pm ET

This is why the GOP will stay in the wilderness - people want a break once in awhile from all the stress, bad news, drama, etc. and the Obama family provides that for us. Will a daggone dog change the world? NO but it gives us a brief mental rest from all that we are coping with....the grumpy attitude of people like NG and many of the boggers I've seen is just plain sad and certainly doesn't make me want to pay any attention to them even if they did have a good idea. Lighten the heck up.

Pete from MN   April 12th, 2009 1:57 pm ET

Oh Newt, What is wrong with you? Why do republicans have so much hatred for anything that has obama's name to it.

dixie-chik   April 12th, 2009 1:57 pm ET

One might have the same reaction to "news" that thrice married, twice divorced Gingrich converted to Catholicism.

Sammy   April 12th, 2009 1:57 pm ET

Maybe because the person who gave the kids the puppy more than likely wont be with us anymore? I guess at the very least Newt isnt sentimental about anything... or has a heart.

Susan Enholm   April 12th, 2009 1:56 pm ET

It would be nice if the media focused on real news and stopped dishing out inconsequential fluff. For me that means no more Palin, Levi Johnson, the guy who ate ten pizzas in five minutes, and Bo. Let everyone feel soft and cuddly, except Newt, for one announcement about the dog. I hope that the media will be able to move on.

Emma, San Jose   April 12th, 2009 1:56 pm ET

Gingrich's statement clearly defines him as a negative, oppositional guy.

Kevin -- Indiana   April 12th, 2009 1:56 pm ET

No offense Newt, but I think it's fairly stupid that a bunch of washed-up old grouches are sitting on the side-lines, glaring with their arms crossed, making derisive comments about Obama and his family. What a bunch of sore losers.

Dee Nichols   April 12th, 2009 1:56 pm ET

It is quite evident that John King views are overwhelmingly republican. He seems to try to get his guests to criticize Barack Obama. If he could be less obvious it would be more acceptable.

Thanks.

Cate   April 12th, 2009 1:55 pm ET

Let's hope the next dog Gingrich meets bites him sharply up the arse, the miserable old sod. Has he never bought his kids a pet? Let the girls enjoy their pup!

BG   April 12th, 2009 1:55 pm ET

Ah, Mr. Gingrich, for once we agree.

BigEd   April 12th, 2009 1:55 pm ET

Why does Newt have to be such a sourpuss? Can't he let the Obama girls, and the rest of the country have a snippet of fun, if only for a few minutes? Oh, I forgot – this is coming from a man who served divorce papers to his wife in the hospital as she recovered from cancer surgery.

js.....santee ca   April 12th, 2009 1:55 pm ET

Every Presidential Pet has been welcomed by the American Public since forever......The media has always covered the addition of the new pet
to the White House. Why should it be any different for the Obamas.
To see such partisan politics played out by the republican party makes me want to vomit. It's a puppy...it can't vote.

Willy Brown   April 12th, 2009 1:55 pm ET

It plain to see that the elected one is not qualified to be in that office.

Spacedog2k5   April 12th, 2009 1:55 pm ET

I think it's a great thing. Every child, boy or girl, should have a dog – there is no greater bond on this Earth. Even Humans themselves offer only lukewarm bonds at best. This is a good sign, and one that he is a good father, and that he truly cares about what is right for his children. I also believe a good father can be a solid leader. Oh, and I think someone should get Mr. Gingrich a dog – for he sounds rather jealous, don't you think?

Tomas E   April 12th, 2009 1:54 pm ET

Is this compassionate conservatisim, Newt? Did you say the same thing about the previous President or are you just finding something to nitpick about.

Adam from Ohio   April 12th, 2009 1:54 pm ET

Yeah, it's inconsequential. Yeah, it shows that America's odd obsession with the ins and outs of celebrity life is still going strong. And, yeah, the Newt is showing himself to be an insufferable twit by speaking out in this way. Let it go, Newt. Smile, say a kind word or two, and move on.

Adam from Ohio   April 12th, 2009 1:54 pm ET

It's official. Newt Gingrich hates puppies.

Marc L   April 12th, 2009 1:52 pm ET

I am actually surprised the President got a dog. It has been a Presidential tradition for a while now and the new President seems all to happy to break traditions and protocals.

banks   April 12th, 2009 1:52 pm ET

wow newt ur so angry maybe you need a puppy too to make u feel young and not look so miserable and angry .. Woooww

worriedmom   April 12th, 2009 1:52 pm ET

This is nice for the girls, although he promised it would be a shelter dog. However, I am sure the girls have been waiting a long time on this one. I do think the media needs to stop slobbering over these type of deals and be real journalists and report things on economy and alike. The media has definitely taken things too far and they actually are starting to look right pitiful on television slobbering over every single thing the Obama's do. sad how the media is handling itself. I have lost all respect for the slobbering fools.

zivo24   April 12th, 2009 1:52 pm ET

Poor Newt...whinging about a puppy...this is how irrelevant he has become since his plans to cement a GOP dynasty by dividing this nation over phantom wedge issues failed in the face of the hope and unity that Obama brought us.

Frankly, Newt..you're "fairly stupid".

snuggs   April 12th, 2009 1:52 pm ET

Bitter, party of one, your table is ready.

MJ   April 12th, 2009 1:52 pm ET

Who cares? Those kids care. The dog was promised to the Obama children as a gift for being extremely patient during the Presidential campaign by their father. He loves them and wants them to be happy. Puppies are all part of a normal childhood that I'm guessing Mr. Gingrich may not have had.

wakeupamerica   April 12th, 2009 1:52 pm ET

It's a dog. And a cutie at that. Newt, why can't you can't be happy about that? Geez, I think you're the one that needs to get over yourself. What an idiot you are.

Carol   April 12th, 2009 1:51 pm ET

Newt: Your opinion... who cares? Really, who cares?

katiec   April 12th, 2009 1:51 pm ET

Gingrich needs to get a life. We, the American people, enjoy being included in our President and his families activities.
He sure can't brag about anything the republicans have done or
are doing, so he has to resort to comments about a puppy.
And. this makes the headlines????

Neo   April 12th, 2009 1:51 pm ET

Of course all the puppy talk is stupid. That's why liberals embrace it!

See "The Washington Post" for all the breaking news on the puppy!

Meanwhile, the U. S. is slowly legislated into a communist state and the press instead focuses on a dog.

Praise Obama. Hail to Obama!

June   April 12th, 2009 1:50 pm ET

A lot of people are interested in the new puppy. Newt, you need to get a puppy so you'll have someone to listen to you.

Martin   April 12th, 2009 1:50 pm ET

In case anyone one wondering, this nutty Republican is still the Grinch who stole DC.

Molly   April 12th, 2009 1:50 pm ET

lol...wow this is a great new image of the GOP...bitter, gruppy ol' men that like to kick dogs! :-)

Konner   April 12th, 2009 1:49 pm ET

Who cares what Newt thinks? When did HIS opinion become relevant?

PAUL W., TAMPA   April 12th, 2009 1:49 pm ET

I might add one more thing to the list of things we should question "who cares?", Newt

Who really cares what Newt Gingrich has to say?

Roger   April 12th, 2009 1:49 pm ET

I agree let's focus on NEWT's past, what he done to his first wife while she was in the hospital very ill, secondly let's focus on him giving Bill Clinton Hell over Lewinsky and he was having an affair with a member of his staff at the same time....Newt maybe smart but he is corrupt......

gENO   April 12th, 2009 1:48 pm ET

Yeah, Gingrich is wrong about a lot of things, but he's dead on about this one. Obama's puppy–is this newsworthy?

Michael   April 12th, 2009 1:47 pm ET

Newt's jealous. Obama gets positive public recognition out of a dog and all he gets is his sister telling the world what a jerk he is, as if that's news. This is the guy who tells his dieing wife he's going to divorce her while she's in the hospital. A truly despicable man. Who cares what he has to say is the real question.

duffer   April 12th, 2009 1:47 pm ET

Newt Grinch gets upset over a puppy? These conservatives need to lighten up!

J S Ragman   April 12th, 2009 1:47 pm ET

President Obama's overall popularity is just unbearable to Gingrich and the rest of the right wing. The jealousy is truly astounding. Idiots like Gingrich will complain and criticize anything and everything relating to the Obama family. Hey Newt, The President is a loyal father and husband (unlike you) that is getting a dog for his daughters. This is not the first time that the press and the public has shown an interest in matters that concern first families. It wasn't that long ago that the media reported the death of the Bush's cat. Newt needs to get a life.

Al, KS   April 12th, 2009 1:46 pm ET

And what the Grinch has to say..."who cares?". Just shut up Newt. Not everything is an issue. I think it is wonderful to have a vibrant family in the White House, sings sets, gardens, kids, dogs and all. Good grief Newt.

Allan   April 12th, 2009 1:46 pm ET

Gingrich launches his bid for the White House in 2012 by bad-mouthing an adorable puppy. Smart move. Will he be kissing babies on the campaign trail, or slapping them?

leo S,   April 12th, 2009 1:45 pm ET

poor NEW,T he just can,t give up,he just can,t shut up ,realy i,m no dog lover , but i could care less whos got what , and where .hes anice guy if he would only go home and shut up.he had plenty of tricks up his sleeve while he was in office, and got kicked out.

Mark WI.   April 12th, 2009 1:45 pm ET

Why are you reporting on, or worse yet , why are we still listening to Newt Gingrich and what he has to say? I thought he went down with the Bush ship. Maybe his parents didn't allow him to have a dog when he was young!

Terrance Craion   April 12th, 2009 1:45 pm ET

"Fairly Stupid" a strange comment from Mr. Gingrich who at 12 lobbied for a zoo for his hometown. We are a nation that loves it pets and in light of the tough times we are in a little levity is welcome!

I hope the Obama family enjoys the new addition to their family!

Terrance Craion

Happy Easter Everyone!

Rickymo   April 12th, 2009 1:44 pm ET

Gingrich has and always will be useless. Another loser who should just go away...

Weird   April 12th, 2009 1:44 pm ET

I really, honestly, never thought I would agree with Gingrich on anything. Weird.

SBW   April 12th, 2009 1:43 pm ET

Oh come on. Newt is just a grumpy, nasty old man. People have been making a big deal about White House pets for years. Let them! It's a nice change from the doom and gloom we normally see in the news these days. Newt comes across like the bitter old dude who sits on his front porch and yells at kids to get off his yard. Bah.

Simmy   April 12th, 2009 1:43 pm ET

Newt is really coming out of his seams because they got the puppy from Sir Ted Kennedy......I am thrilled that the girls finally have their pet. It's not stupid. Newt is.......

P. Mathew   April 12th, 2009 1:41 pm ET

Sounds like Newt is a bit jealous that the Obamas got a puppy from Kennedy and he didn't.

I'm sure Newt will defriend Kennedy on facebook as a result.

Rebecca   April 12th, 2009 1:41 pm ET

Mother of God, Newt. Are you so wounded by not being in power any more that you have to get down on other people's pleasure in a PUPPY? Maybe, considering your history, I shouldn't be surprised at the heartlessness, but I had more or less thought you were smart enough to realize that the American public loves its children and dogs! Poor, poor public relations, Mr. G'rinch.

Julie   April 12th, 2009 1:41 pm ET

Why would Gingrich say something so "stupid" And quite frankly, I don't recall seeing so much "hype" about it . I am happy for the Obama girls and the first family.

Tara   April 12th, 2009 1:40 pm ET

he sounds bitter. what did the puppy ever do to him?

Randy, San Francisco   April 12th, 2009 1:40 pm ET

Republicans don't get it. Americans want some diversion and good news during these tough economic times. The dog story makes everyone happy.

Joel   April 12th, 2009 1:40 pm ET

And who cares enough to ask Newt Gingrich what he thinks of the Obama dog? Of course all the hype is ridiculous, but it is the media making all the hype. Do you think the Obama family wants all this paid attention to their getting dog for the children? But perhaps with all the bad news about the economy, yesterday in Iraq, the piracy on the high seas, this is some really nice news for a change!

And I have one of these dogs. She would even cheer up Mr. Gingrich.

John in VA   April 12th, 2009 1:40 pm ET

I'm sorry to say, but Newt is right. There are more important things going on than the Obamas dog.

Michael   April 12th, 2009 1:40 pm ET

Wow...sour grapes much? Gingrich isn't missing any opportunity to bash the new guy, as long as it'll keep his own name in the news. Get a life, Newt!

Gigi   April 12th, 2009 1:38 pm ET

i'd loathe to agree with the likes of Gingrich, but he is right. why is the media making such a big deal of the most mundane family details of our President? I'm sure President Obama is wondering the same thing!

But hey, when a woman suing her mother over a dog makes headlines in CNN.com, then the first family getting a dog for their children is big news indeed!

Hall for Obama   April 12th, 2009 1:36 pm ET

Gingrich that is why you are not the president of the Unite State of America, because I can see you have no feeling for the little people. Just look at you beating up on little girls calling their puppy “fairly stupid” shame on you Gingrich.

What do you want people to focus on Gingrich? You lost! Any thing concerning President Obama you will not like it any way, so go home and take your chill pill.

don kraus   April 12th, 2009 1:35 pm ET

Considering the abhorrently stupid behavior of the Republican Party over the last 3+ months, I don't think Gingrich should be calling anything about the President stupid. The dog is probably better "potty-trained" than most of the GOP.

It's official. The GOP *IS* a bunch of cranky old white guys.

mike   April 12th, 2009 1:33 pm ET

Republicans always have something bitter to ad. Face it Newt, the Obama's are a good looking bunch, and its part of the reason America fell in love with them. You on the other hand, not so much!

Lori   April 12th, 2009 1:33 pm ET

For once I agree with Gingrich. This focus on the Obama dog is fairly stupid. I would much rather focus on how the Republicans who got us into this economic mess in the first place are trying to act as if they now have all the solutions to get us out of it and how with a straight face they put out an alternative economic 'plan' that still has us trillions in debt but are complaining about the President's policies. Now, that is 'fairly stupid'.

JonDie   April 12th, 2009 1:32 pm ET

I agree, Newt, the media's focus on the dog is pretty stupid. But it's not AS stupid as the media's focus on Rush Limbaugh's side kick, Newt Gingrich.

Ron   April 12th, 2009 1:31 pm ET

Loosen up Newt! Really, is there not a happy moment to be found in this event? Somehow, that word "stupid" seems to outshadow a little joy coming to two sweet little girls who happen to live in the one place in America where all the sadness of not only the country, but the world, seems to land...on the Oval Office desk!
How can any of us begrudge a little joy in the Obama residence?

I Am The Great And Powerful Rush Of Oz   April 12th, 2009 1:31 pm ET

Obamas: Nice pictures of a loving family with their new dog.

Newt: Three wives.

Wanderer   April 12th, 2009 1:30 pm ET

I agree with Mr. Gingrich this is ‘fairly stupid’ but based on the ongoing GOP’s attitude toward President Obama, I wonder if his statement came from jealousy or whether it was for a politic reason. If he didn’t really care this ‘fairly stupid’ why he weighed on this news?

Newt Von Putz   April 12th, 2009 1:30 pm ET

Should it's name be Grinch Gingrich? Oh, sorry, HIS name. I guess he's a human.

barking republican ankle biters   April 12th, 2009 1:29 pm ET

Gingrich has no credibility on anything. The dog is a great story for Easter.I hope the kids are happy.Lets ask Newt about the 88 trillion dollars JP Morgan Chase is holding in toxic assets, since he knows so much.

Can't stand him   April 12th, 2009 1:28 pm ET

Whoda thought that Biden's comment about Obama being tested in the first 6 months would be with 5 or 6 pirates in a rubber raft taking on the entire US of A with a few AK-47's and 1 shoulder rocket.

It's sure great that we have President in the hot seat whose more concerned about the political aspect of the entire situation rather than just taking them out with a few sharpshooters. The last thing we need to do now is go against one of the UN's 50,000 useless resolutions. Huh ... what?

Where we talking about a dog or something?

God I miss GWB, a man's man.

Lynn   April 12th, 2009 1:28 pm ET

And what Gingrich has to say about the Obama's new puppy matters because... as well as anyone else's opinion?? These are two little girls who are entitled to pick their own pet and to have a puppy to grow up with.

Their parents have to right to chose the one that will be the healthiest and where they will get it.

Some Americans should get a life of their own...the constant bashing of the president's personal decisions is pathetic.

jwdeluca   April 12th, 2009 1:27 pm ET

About Newt Gingrich, who cares?

Blake   April 12th, 2009 1:25 pm ET

The Republicans are such sore losers. Wah, wah.

Bill   April 12th, 2009 1:24 pm ET

Captain Richard Phillips has been released!!! God Bless him

Bert   April 12th, 2009 1:21 pm ET

Even with the new White House First Dog, media has to make it a political controversy. Get a life!

Elizabeth   April 12th, 2009 1:20 pm ET

Newt: It's not the 90's anymore. Obama is not Bill Clinton. Your time has long since passed. The fight you once had as Speaker is over.

First Obama is anti-religious and then on a day like Easter, you have to insult a simple positive story about the first family.

To the GOP: RIP.

Jacque Bauer   April 12th, 2009 1:19 pm ET

Who cares, other than the drooling, idol-loving media and liberals who are emotionally invested in everything this unconstitutional president does? Imagine, a committe picked dog (a Kennedy, no less) with a focus group selected name!

The biggest non-story of the decade.

CG   April 12th, 2009 1:19 pm ET

And why do we care about Newt Grinch? A disgraced and unemployed political hack?

cregis   April 12th, 2009 1:18 pm ET

Newt should just crawl under the rock he slid out from, maybe he could go back and sit on his ex-wife's hospital bed and scheme up some more ethical violations while he's telling her, Adios, and Sorry you have cancer.

FreeNLovIt   April 12th, 2009 1:18 pm ET

Obie is the Prez, so it's his SHOW, so who cares what anyone says...

Geeze   April 12th, 2009 1:17 pm ET

Agreed. Gingrich is 'fairly stupid'
We talk about the economy all the time; can't we have a little rest from it? It's a little depressing and it's bad for your health.

CA Senior   April 12th, 2009 1:17 pm ET

We definitely do not want Newt Gingrich to be a prominent leader for the US. Pet lovers beware! He is showing his shallowness.

pattyd   April 12th, 2009 1:16 pm ET

Bah-humbug to Newt! Have some jelly beans or chocolate bunnies

LW In Texas   April 12th, 2009 1:16 pm ET

Newt needs to get a life in fact he and all of his right wing pals need to get over the fact the American People voted for a change in the way things are done. and the dog is cute and so newt pick on someone your own size like Rush.......

Mary   April 12th, 2009 1:15 pm ET

I thought having Barney (Bush dog) on TV getting a treat when he had bitten a reporter from Bush when all of these problems started to unfold was stupid. That was just like Mr. Bush, giving a reward for bad behavior. Despite what Newt says,"Obama can do more than one thing at a time.

If Newt have solutions for this country, that he claims he loves so much, let the American people know and if his ideas will get us out of this mess then Newt will be the new president in 2012. After all this is what all the criticizes about the President is all about, isn't it Newt?

Sally   April 12th, 2009 1:13 pm ET

Of course the story isn't of huge consequence but for criying out loud, a little happy, fun news out of Washington doesn't hurt once in awhile.

alvino   April 12th, 2009 1:12 pm ET

I have to admit that if anyone is an expert on stupid, it would be Newt.

Had It   April 12th, 2009 1:11 pm ET

Guess Newt didn't get the word from Limbaugh – this is a far right wing hating point. Rush will need an apology Newt – better get on your knees.
