WASHINGTON (CNN) – Former Republican House Speaker Newt Gingrich weighed in Sunday on news that the first family has finally settled on a new puppy for daughters Malia and Sasha.
“I hope that the girls love the dog,” Gingrich said on ABC’s “This Week.” “I hope the family – and all the pressure they’re going to be in – finds it useful. And I think that this whole thing is fairly stupid.”
The six-month-old puppy is a Portuguese water dog that the Obamas have decided to name Bo. The dog is a gift to the first family from Massachusetts Sen. Ted Kennedy, a longtime Obama political ally who also owns several dogs of the breed.
“It’s great that they have a dog. It’s great that the kids are adjusting,” Gingrich said. “And where they got it from – who cares? It’s a nice gesture on Senator Kennedy’s part to give it to them but who cares?” Gingrich added.
Perhaps it was a partisan difference, but Democratic strategist and CNN contributor Donna Brazile had kinder words for the new first puppy.
“What’s not to like about this dog?” Brazile said Sunday on CNN’s State of the Union. “He’s cute. He’s adorable. But, I hope he’s potty trained,” she joked

I have to admit that if anyone is an expert on stupid, it would be Newt.
Of course the story isn't of huge consequence but for criying out loud, a little happy, fun news out of Washington doesn't hurt once in awhile.
I thought having Barney (Bush dog) on TV getting a treat when he had bitten a reporter from Bush when all of these problems started to unfold was stupid. That was just like Mr. Bush, giving a reward for bad behavior. Despite what Newt says,"Obama can do more than one thing at a time.
If Newt have solutions for this country, that he claims he loves so much, let the American people know and if his ideas will get us out of this mess then Newt will be the new president in 2012. After all this is what all the criticizes about the President is all about, isn't it Newt?
Newt needs to get a life in fact he and all of his right wing pals need to get over the fact the American People voted for a change in the way things are done. and the dog is cute and so newt pick on someone your own size like Rush.......

And what Gingrich has to say about the Obama's new puppy matters because... as well as anyone else's opinion?? These are two little girls who are entitled to pick their own pet and to have a puppy to grow up with.
Their parents have to right to chose the one that will be the healthiest and where they will get it.
Some Americans should get a life of their own...the constant bashing of the president's personal decisions is pathetic.

I agree with Mr. Gingrich this is ‘fairly stupid’ but based on the ongoing GOP’s attitude toward President Obama, I wonder if his statement came from jealousy or whether it was for a politic reason. If he didn’t really care this ‘fairly stupid’ why he weighed on this news?

Loosen up Newt! Really, is there not a happy moment to be found in this event? Somehow, that word "stupid" seems to outshadow a little joy coming to two sweet little girls who happen to live in the one place in America where all the sadness of not only the country, but the world, seems to land...on the Oval Office desk!
How can any of us begrudge a little joy in the Obama residence?
