WASHINGTON (CNN) – Former Republican House Speaker Newt Gingrich weighed in Sunday on news that the first family has finally settled on a new puppy for daughters Malia and Sasha.
“I hope that the girls love the dog,” Gingrich said on ABC’s “This Week.” “I hope the family – and all the pressure they’re going to be in – finds it useful. And I think that this whole thing is fairly stupid.”
The six-month-old puppy is a Portuguese water dog that the Obamas have decided to name Bo. The dog is a gift to the first family from Massachusetts Sen. Ted Kennedy, a longtime Obama political ally who also owns several dogs of the breed.
“It’s great that they have a dog. It’s great that the kids are adjusting,” Gingrich said. “And where they got it from – who cares? It’s a nice gesture on Senator Kennedy’s part to give it to them but who cares?” Gingrich added.
Perhaps it was a partisan difference, but Democratic strategist and CNN contributor Donna Brazile had kinder words for the new first puppy.
“What’s not to like about this dog?” Brazile said Sunday on CNN’s State of the Union. “He’s cute. He’s adorable. But, I hope he’s potty trained,” she joked

President Obama's overall popularity is just unbearable to Gingrich and the rest of the right wing. The jealousy is truly astounding. Idiots like Gingrich will complain and criticize anything and everything relating to the Obama family. Hey Newt, The President is a loyal father and husband (unlike you) that is getting a dog for his daughters. This is not the first time that the press and the public has shown an interest in matters that concern first families. It wasn't that long ago that the media reported the death of the Bush's cat. Newt needs to get a life.
Newt Grinch gets upset over a puppy? These conservatives need to lighten up!
Newt's jealous. Obama gets positive public recognition out of a dog and all he gets is his sister telling the world what a jerk he is, as if that's news. This is the guy who tells his dieing wife he's going to divorce her while she's in the hospital. A truly despicable man. Who cares what he has to say is the real question.
Yeah, Gingrich is wrong about a lot of things, but he's dead on about this one. Obama's puppy–is this newsworthy?
I agree let's focus on NEWT's past, what he done to his first wife while she was in the hospital very ill, secondly let's focus on him giving Bill Clinton Hell over Lewinsky and he was having an affair with a member of his staff at the same time....Newt maybe smart but he is corrupt......
I might add one more thing to the list of things we should question "who cares?", Newt
Who really cares what Newt Gingrich has to say?
Who cares what Newt thinks? When did HIS opinion become relevant?
lol...wow this is a great new image of the GOP...bitter, gruppy ol' men that like to kick dogs!
In case anyone one wondering, this nutty Republican is still the Grinch who stole DC.
A lot of people are interested in the new puppy. Newt, you need to get a puppy so you'll have someone to listen to you.
Of course all the puppy talk is stupid. That's why liberals embrace it!
See "The Washington Post" for all the breaking news on the puppy!
Meanwhile, the U. S. is slowly legislated into a communist state and the press instead focuses on a dog.
Praise Obama. Hail to Obama!
Gingrich needs to get a life. We, the American people, enjoy being included in our President and his families activities.
He sure can't brag about anything the republicans have done or
are doing, so he has to resort to comments about a puppy.
And. this makes the headlines????
Newt: Your opinion... who cares? Really, who cares?
It's a dog. And a cutie at that. Newt, why can't you can't be happy about that? Geez, I think you're the one that needs to get over yourself. What an idiot you are.
Who cares? Those kids care. The dog was promised to the Obama children as a gift for being extremely patient during the Presidential campaign by their father. He loves them and wants them to be happy. Puppies are all part of a normal childhood that I'm guessing Mr. Gingrich may not have had.
Bitter, party of one, your table is ready.
Poor Newt...whinging about a puppy...this is how irrelevant he has become since his plans to cement a GOP dynasty by dividing this nation over phantom wedge issues failed in the face of the hope and unity that Obama brought us.
Frankly, Newt..you're "fairly stupid".
This is nice for the girls, although he promised it would be a shelter dog. However, I am sure the girls have been waiting a long time on this one. I do think the media needs to stop slobbering over these type of deals and be real journalists and report things on economy and alike. The media has definitely taken things too far and they actually are starting to look right pitiful on television slobbering over every single thing the Obama's do. sad how the media is handling itself. I have lost all respect for the slobbering fools.
wow newt ur so angry maybe you need a puppy too to make u feel young and not look so miserable and angry .. Woooww
I am actually surprised the President got a dog. It has been a Presidential tradition for a while now and the new President seems all to happy to break traditions and protocals.
It's official. Newt Gingrich hates puppies.
Yeah, it's inconsequential. Yeah, it shows that America's odd obsession with the ins and outs of celebrity life is still going strong. And, yeah, the Newt is showing himself to be an insufferably twit by speaking out in this way. Let it go, Newt. Smile, say a kind word or two, and move on.

Is this compassionate conservatisim, Newt? Did you say the same thing about the previous President or are you just finding something to nitpick about.
I think it's a great thing. Every child, boy or girl, should have a dog – there is no greater bond on this Earth. Even Humans themselves offer only lukewarm bonds at best. This is a good sign, and one that he is a good father, and that he truly cares about what is right for his children. I also believe a good father can be a solid leader. Oh, and I think someone should get Mr. Gingrich a dog – for he sounds rather jealous, don't you think?
