Gingrich: Focus on Obama puppy 'fairly stupid'

News of the arrival of the new first puppy has already caused a partisan split between Newt Gingrich and CNN Contributor Donna Brazile.
News of the arrival of the new first puppy has already caused a partisan split between Newt Gingrich and CNN Contributor Donna Brazile.

WASHINGTON (CNN) – Former Republican House Speaker Newt Gingrich weighed in Sunday on news that the first family has finally settled on a new puppy for daughters Malia and Sasha.

“I hope that the girls love the dog,” Gingrich said on ABC’s “This Week.” “I hope the family – and all the pressure they’re going to be in – finds it useful. And I think that this whole thing is fairly stupid.”

The six-month-old puppy is a Portuguese water dog that the Obamas have decided to name Bo. The dog is a gift to the first family from Massachusetts Sen. Ted Kennedy, a longtime Obama political ally who also owns several dogs of the breed.

“It’s great that they have a dog. It’s great that the kids are adjusting,” Gingrich said. “And where they got it from – who cares? It’s a nice gesture on Senator Kennedy’s part to give it to them but who cares?” Gingrich added.

Perhaps it was a partisan difference, but Democratic strategist and CNN contributor Donna Brazile had kinder words for the new first puppy.

“What’s not to like about this dog?” Brazile said Sunday on CNN’s State of the Union. “He’s cute. He’s adorable. But, I hope he’s potty trained,” she joked

So what he's saying is that the American people are stupid for their interest in the Obama's normalcy in getting a family dog? Is he saying that their "family values" are stupid? Interesting...

Americans (most Americans anyway) really love their pets, and animals in general, unless your a republican who seems to want to kill anything they can, with a bazooka according to republican NRAers.
Newt G(rinch) should lighten up and do something constructive like pulling his head out of his butt. It takes all kinds, I'm sure anyone with the name like Newt can understand. Newt...great name for your pet lizard.

We're Republicans! We hate everybody and everything, except stirring up wars and letting big business run wild. We hate Obama and any positive news story about him. We are like Mr. Potter in "It's a Wonderful Life", snarling at the world.

I'm a bleeding heart liberal and registered Democrat, but for once I agree with Gingrich. We have men and women dying in Iraq and Afghanistan, our economy's in the tank, North Korea test-fired another missile, Somali pirates are taking ships hostage...and the media is focusing on things like this silly puppy and Michelle Obama's fashion sense. Priorities, please!

Maybe the public is eager for good news after all of the bad news that Newt's party brought us!

sounds like Gingrich is jealous he didn't get a dog from Sen. Kennedy. Will someone get the man a puppy please? He really could use one.

I happen agree who cares. It’s a dog for crying out loud.

If his girls enjoy it, that is what counts not what the public or media thinks.

I must say it’s a very cute dog. I do happen to think pet adoption would have been a better way to go.

But hey I hope all our happy with the choice and how is this a real news story may I ask?

Newt Gingrich- what a shameless hyprocrit. Sure the new dog is no big deal- just a human interest story. But it is the ever excited press that is making a big deal of it.
On the other hand, Newt could have just kept quiet. Why is he getting involved? He is trying to get his name in the news and voila- it worked. Who cares what Newt thinks about. it? Come you airheads in the press, Newt is using you for his political ends. When is sanity going to return to this country?

I think Newt's neurosis is finally getting out of control. He is certainly not aging with grace - but of course he never had any. Typical conservative; doesn't grow old with class – just grumpiness.

More stupid were Newt's and other naysayers and kneejerk reacters with their whining and criticizing that the president, the state dept.and the military didn't know what they were doing!! Once again President Obama and his team proved them wrong.

Gingrich doesn't want to read about the dog. I don't want to read about Gingrich. Neither is relevant to the national future, and that is what we sould be talking and reading about. Perhaps CNN should quit covering both of them.

For the news to be so hard to find, I have to agree with Newt, which by the way is a rare thing, there are far more important things going on in the world than a dog. I do hope the girls learn to take good care of what is their first dog.

As far back as I can remember, this media fuss happens whenever anyone in the White House gets a pet. Has Gingrich forgotten this? Just sounds like more whining from Grand Old Party of No.

For the record, I personally don't care about any presidential family's pets, but I'd bet my savings that if this fuss had been over, say, John & Cindy McCain's new pet in the White House, Gingrich would be singing a different tune...

i have to agree, who cares? it's great they got a dog, but there are much more important issues at hand than a new puppy for the kids.

Reminds me of a saying: "The dogs bark as the parade slowly passes by."

Newt – the architect of the Republicans brief tactical victory in 1994, and their demise today.
