WASHINGTON (CNN) – Former Republican House Speaker Newt Gingrich weighed in Sunday on news that the first family has finally settled on a new puppy for daughters Malia and Sasha.
“I hope that the girls love the dog,” Gingrich said on ABC’s “This Week.” “I hope the family – and all the pressure they’re going to be in – finds it useful. And I think that this whole thing is fairly stupid.”
The six-month-old puppy is a Portuguese water dog that the Obamas have decided to name Bo. The dog is a gift to the first family from Massachusetts Sen. Ted Kennedy, a longtime Obama political ally who also owns several dogs of the breed.
“It’s great that they have a dog. It’s great that the kids are adjusting,” Gingrich said. “And where they got it from – who cares? It’s a nice gesture on Senator Kennedy’s part to give it to them but who cares?” Gingrich added.
Perhaps it was a partisan difference, but Democratic strategist and CNN contributor Donna Brazile had kinder words for the new first puppy.
“What’s not to like about this dog?” Brazile said Sunday on CNN’s State of the Union. “He’s cute. He’s adorable. But, I hope he’s potty trained,” she joked

Perhaps Newt has forgotten in his isolated castle in the Beltway, that a lot of people in this country are suffering. Bad news is everyday news.
The delight of two little girls in a new puppy is simply a 'smile' break from the "Parade of Horribles" that Newt and his grand ole GOP led by GWB and Cheney left us with.
Let's not forget the Newt who divorced his wife on her deathbed so that he could marry the woman he'd been having an affair with. So much for even moral superiority.

I guess when Newt Gingrich isn't telling his hospitalized-with-cancer wife that he wants a divorce so he can marry a younger woman, he terrorizes puppy dogs and kittens.

C'mon, it's the kids first puppy! I'm sure Newt hasn't been that excited since his first, second or third wife. Or the several other "ladies" he took on test drives while he was still married. Newt probably hasn't made his children so happy since he left their mothers(pl).

It is so sad to see that the Obama's forgot they said they would get a dog from a shelter. Millions of dogs are killed every year because there are not enough homes and people continue to go to breeders. The Obama's could have helped. I was wrong to believe in the Obamas. Lies!
We love our pets...whether it was LBJ's beagles, Socks, Millie, etc. we are fascinated by our pets. We spend huge dollars on them...we love them and they love us...Bo is in a long line of first dogs...may everyone be happy.
Lighten up Newt. The family didn't cause this level of interest. Just be happy for them or is it too much for you?
