Obama daughters to get Portuguese water dog named 'Bo'

The president is finally fulfilling an important campaign promise - to get his daughters a new puppy now that his campaign is over.

WASHINGTON (CNN)– The frenzy over the First Dog is finally over. The Obamas are welcoming a Portuguese water dog to the White House that Sasha and Malia have named "Bo," according to two Democratic sources familiar with the secretive process.

The sources confirmed an account in Sunday's Washington Post that Sen. Edward Kennedy, who has three Portuguese water dogs, played a critical role in lining up the pup.

The puppy is set to be officially unveiled to the world on Tuesday after the Obamas host their first White House Easter egg roll on Monday.

Thank goodness. Puppygate will finally come to an end. I hope it doesn't take this long for the country to get over Bowgate also, too.

Too bad the Obamas did not see the value in getting a dog from a shelter or a rescue. He talked the talk in the beginning but didn't follow through in the end. Sounds familiar.

What a nice story to wake up to ! ...... For Joe Biden and flybyshoeing, are you going to church this AM and pretend your Christians? I am proud of the job Obama has done so far. and I am glad there is that his children will have some joy with a new dog this holiday. Obama will be cleaning up after the horror of Bush and Cheney another two hypocritical Christians.

During the depressiong people flocked to movies. With grim economic times , war , poverty, drug use and right wingers who pretend to love God but hate all he stands for...... I was smiling to wake up and read a joyous story for once.

I am so glad you guys get to be miserable for another 3 years and 9 months ........ Happy Easter

joe biden senior- your not very informed are you? I am glad Obama has at least one friend in the white house. After all he has a huge mess brought to us all by Bush and Cheney. Can you image what terrible shape we would be in with another person from the ignorant GOP?

Why do you hate the man so much? I dont recall any one say who will clean up after the dog? I do know no one will have to clean up behine President Obama. Get over hating the man he is doing the best with what was left for him to work with.

I am glad that they took the time to think about getting a dog. This is a commitment of 12+ years to think about, not just a spotlight feature.

  11. Great news!

This is exciting..and it is news! Dog lovers and supporters of the first family are thrilled.
ALL the former White House pets from Checkers to Socks and Barney have been a source of joy . The puppy or "Bo" Obama is six months old and I would gather house trained. Whomever cleaned up after Barney will probably clean up after Bo.. but you can bet the girls will do allot of work with the dog. So all you "haters" shut the heck up. Happy Easter and let some light shine through will you??

Who cares about the 'first dog'!!?? Doesn't the media have anything better to report?! Will they cover the dog's 'first event' in the Rose Garden, too?

Just for the record Obama haters. Fox news has the story too !........ Obama did talk about a shelter dog but again his child has severe allergies.. These dogs for the record have hair not fur...... My mother was visited by a Portugese Water Dog while receiving chemo. The dog was a volunteer brought to bring joy to cancer patients. My mother was afraid of dogs but turned out to love that dog. .......... These are pure bred dogs and I cant imagine there would be too many sitting in a dog pound.

I much prefer a story about this than the hatred spewing out of Alaska and the Palin family right now......... Well off to Easter Brunch, we are doing our bit this AM to help the economy

What a nice story to wake up to on this beautiful Easter morning. The Obama's are such great parents and they put a lot of thought into what kind of dog to get the kids. And what a lucky dog "Bo" will be.
Thanks for sharing some good news for a change.

Yes, this is the important thing going on at the White House and around the world in 60 minutes with CNN. Why don't they cover more important news, like the tea parties that will happen next week. No mention of that on here.

Shouldn't we be more concerned about the American hostage being held by pirates, instead of a dog's name?
Or are we going to brush this under the rug, just like the bombing of the U.S.S. Cole?

  23. BHO to the rescue

This is insane. We have an American held hostage and our president will not comment on it. He wants avoid becoming Jimmy Carter and having a hostage situation dominate his agenda.
Why CNN posts information about the family dog is beyond me.
This president is in over his head, nice picture by the playscape while we have two wars and pirates attacking ships. Image what all of you would say if that was President Bush. This is certainly all the hope and change I can believe in.

I don't know why some get upset about a story like this. It's harmless and lighthearted. Do all news stories have to be serious or sensationalistic? Bill Clinton had Sock the Cat, the elder Bush had some dog that wrote a book, Reagan had his horses and I believe Jimmy Carter had a rabbit.
There are a lot of animal lovers out there and they find this interesting. And it is not like this is the only story available on this website or they're running out of space.
And news is also entertainment now; some of you are evidentally unable to cope with the change without anger.

It is a shame that Obama didn't spend as much time really considering the affects of his spending on our children as he did in the selection of a dog.
