Obama daughters to get Portuguese water dog named 'Bo'

The president is finally fulfilling an important campaign promise -- to get his daughters a new puppy now that his campaign is over.
The president is finally fulfilling an important campaign promise - to get his daughters a new puppy now that his campaign is over.

WASHINGTON (CNN)– The frenzy over the First Dog is finally over. The Obamas are welcoming a Portuguese water dog to the White House that Sasha and Malia have named "Bo," according to two Democratic sources familiar with the secretive process.

The sources confirmed an account in Sunday's Washington Post that Sen. Edward Kennedy, who has three Portuguese water dogs, played a critical role in lining up the pup.

The puppy is set to be officially unveiled to the world on Tuesday after the Obamas host their first White House Easter egg roll on Monday.

I believe there are more pressing issues to concern ourselves with than "a dog". Obama wants to spread the wealth (my hard earned money which is MINE). Maybe he can cut his own personal spending and enroll his girls in PUBLIC school and get a dog from the pound. Hmmm-not good enough for him ??????

And one more instance of B.O. "changing his mind" . There are plenty of other types of non-allergenic dogs in pounds....also pedigrees. He says what people want to hear, and then does what he wants...but then he's a Chicago politician.

I find it highly annoying to watch the news everyday and all I hear about, is what kind of dress the First Lady is wearing, or better yet what kind of dog they are going to get. Why don't we focus more on the issues at hand, such as the economic mess our country is in and the means of correcting it! Their social insights are the least of my concern.

Thank god, now can we stop talking about it, nice they got a dog from a breeder, to bad for the millions we kill in shelters every year.

CAMPAIGN PROMISE: to get a dog from a shelter, to make a statement that purchasing designer dogs from breeders is wrong, as it creates an entire industry of puppy mills which in-breed dogs under poor conditions and adds to the unwanted dog population.

EXECUTION IN OFFICE: Obtained a designer dog from an ailing friend as a "gift" and then forget all about the campaign promise.

Millions of dogs are put down every year in shelters. Often, these are dogs that were "last year's breed" – dogs that were popular because that breed was on television or was the breed owned by the President.

Remember the Jack Russell Terrier craze from "Frazier"? Jack Russells flooded the shelters a few years later when people realized these high-strung dogs could tear apart a couch in a matter of minutes.

PREDICTION: In 3-4 years, shelters will be flooded with poorly bread "Portugese Water Dogs" adopted by folks who want to "have the same dog the President has".

Obama had a chance here to make a real statement. However, once in office, it seems like he is just acting like all the other Presidents. So far, not much different than Bush!

The Obamas could not get a shelter dog because shelter dogs are almost always mixed breeds and Malia has allergies.

We have two Labs, both from the same breeder. Our son has multiple allergies; we had to give away our cats when our son was a baby after he was diagnosed with cat allergies. We did not adopt our dogs from a shelter because our son's allergist told us that there was no way of being certain that a shelter dog did not carry the genes of one of the breeds to which our son was allergic.

Give the Obamas a break. They put their daughter's health before politics; not a bad choice

They got the dog as a gift; what are they supposed to do, tell Ted Kennedy, who is fighting terminal cancer, no? Plus, it fits their needs. I'm sure if they could have gotten one from a kennel they would have. Let's face it, it's not easy for them to do anything now without the media spotlight. They had to put their daughter's allergy issues first. Get over the shelter issue; the dog needed a home.

I got my dog from a pet store; wasn't what I planned, and the store states that it doesn't buy from puppy mills, etc., and has been in business for years. I wasn't happy I did that, but I love that dog very much. I spoke with someone from the Humane Society one day, and she said that the dog still needed a home, no matter where it came from. That, along with what is best for their family, is what should matter most. Besides, by donating, he's helping out the Humane Society instead of only taking one dog off their hands and being done with it.

I thought that Obama had said that they would adopt from a shelter. I suppose that getting the dog as a "gift" from Senator Kennedy is a good out.
The breed of dog they are adopting is not exactly the easiest breed to train, and expect to see puppy mills breed the daylights out of them during the next year or so. We can probably expect to see shelters fill up with them in a few months. Sad. Very, very sad.

I don't see why some are criticizing the Obamas getting a dog. There has been a pet in the WH for all the years that I remember. This has no connection to world affairs or the economy, so quit trying to manufacture one.
I'm happy for the the girls.

    Obama...
I voted for you, even volunteered for you, but am SOO upset that you went back on your word to adopt from a shelter. Even if you are giving a donation to the Humane Society, I am not thrilled about this. You pledged and promised to get a shelter dog, you stood with Baby, the puppy mill rescue, and vowed to adopt. Shame, shame, shame on you. I will remember this.

In a time when pirates are holding people hostage, intercepted humanitarian aid to Africa, and a natural disaster has killed and destroyed the lives of many Italiens; it is nice to see that CNN has not forgotten that it is indeed Easter weekend and there is still innocence in this world. Even a father, even one as busy as the president, can still take the time to fulfill a promise to his daughter; this can serve, to us all, as a reminder that amid the chaos we must never forget to show the ones closest to us that they are not forgotten and loved. Happy Easter.

P.S. – Everyone – not just CNN, has this story; Washington Post, Google, L.A. Times even has a picture on their front page. Everything the Obamas do is news now, so stop griping about what CNN should put on here. It's a cute story, one that's been followed for months, and nowadays, we need some light mixed in with all the other gunk we have.

This particular dog was actually bought and returned by it's first owner, so it is being given a second chance, kind of like our country. Today is Easter Sunday, not hate time, let's just enjoy a nice bit of happy news for awhile instead of everything always being negative. I for one am glad CNN did the story, it's nice to hear something other than the bad things happening all over, and a story about 2 young kids getting a puppy they have always longed for is a great one. My 2 dogs bring our family unmeasureable joy and laughter and I'm sure the Obamas will feel that too. That is one lucky dog to be in a house with the love they all obviously feel toward each other, he will be so loved and well taken care of, not to mention giving the girls an important lesson on responsibility for caring for a pet. Best wishes first family, we look forward to meeting Bo.

Good for them. Fine dog for a fine family. For those of you complaining that they did not go to a shelter; please consider his daughter's allergies as a reason not to go that route. I would have loved to get a bog old mutt but my oldest daughter is allergic. So our mini poodle is just fine.

They should name the dog Captain Phillips, that way you would hear our president say his name. Oh wait, Barack is off to the Caribbean!!!

Has the dog been properly "vetted"? Has he had all of the shots required by law? More importantly has he paid his taxes?

They do not have TIME to devote to a dog. Unbelievably selfish act to get one and add it to the family. The White House staff will do the work, and the family will pose for photo ops on occasion with the dog. Ridiculous. I feel sorry for Bo already. Portguese Dog Rescue groups get ready! You may need to act at some point. Here's the address: 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington, DC.

What happened to rescuing a dog. I am sure that could of found a non allergic dog on pet finders or perhaps Oprah's staff would have helped him. Shame on him saying he is going to set a example and having his supports believe he was humane. And going right to a puppy mill. How many dogs will have to die from this one dog. It would really have been a good message to his daughters and America please rescue!
He is a huge DISAPPOINTMENT he betrayed his supporters and has to live with that and go to sleep knowing dogs were put to sleep every day because of the elite having to go to puppy mills. Once again he is a disappointment.

This is good. The dog thing is finally over and America can go back to its economic problems.

Here's the sequence of important events in NObama's life:

NObama bows to the Saudi King humiliating all of America.

One of the King's judges decides an 8 year old traded off into marriage by her Saudi father to a man to settle his debts CANNOT "divorce" the letcher.

NObama returns home and makes news by getting a dog.

Anyone else see the stupidity of this news series?
