Obama daughters to get Portuguese water dog named 'Bo'

The president is finally fulfilling an important campaign promise - to get his daughters a new puppy now that his campaign is over.

WASHINGTON (CNN)– The frenzy over the First Dog is finally over. The Obamas are welcoming a Portuguese water dog to the White House that Sasha and Malia have named "Bo," according to two Democratic sources familiar with the secretive process.

The sources confirmed an account in Sunday's Washington Post that Sen. Edward Kennedy, who has three Portuguese water dogs, played a critical role in lining up the pup.

The puppy is set to be officially unveiled to the world on Tuesday after the Obamas host their first White House Easter egg roll on Monday.

I find it funny that people overlook the real big decisions that Obama has had to make and harp on his gift to the Queen and the family's in dog. Seems we still haven't learned how to prioritize in the US just yet.

I went on petfinder.com as MAGGIE suggested and found 13 of these dogs for adoption.

But Obama had to have a PUPPY.

    What a shame.

My daughter was allergic when a child and we got a hypoallergenic poodle from a shelter only to find that he was not a full poodle and she had allergic reactions. We found him another home and bought one with papers and no problem. I think even those who want to hold him to getting a dog from a shelter should agree that family health and safety comes first.

I have seen post where people are mad and not going to support him again because he did not get a shelter dog. This is so childish too. You do not stop supporting a person because they put family health first but some think that he should just to please them. That is so wrong.

I am glad too that CNN decided to run a human interest story on this weekend rather than all the doom and gloom.

    To Lou,

With all the Obama Filled news last week including the positive news about theprogress seen in the economy, all you got out of it was the Obama so call bowing and the puppy story? i wonder what you are listening to.

The truth is that this president inherited the worst economy ever, two wars and a world that hate our guts because of what the republican administration did the last 8 years. He still manages to get progress and do some incredible common sence things that had seldom occur with any president.

I know there is this conspiracy by the conservative talk radio, and thugs like you to attack our president to make him look bad, but you are just making us like him even more.

Get a life, try to help someone in need, volunteer to do something positive for the sake of our country.

Understandably, most of the people that benefitted from the past republican administration do not want to loose that and we can understand their anger. the nonsensical tea parties are a clear example of that.

    LONG LIVE PRESIDENT OBAMA!!

    MAY GOD BE WITH YOU!!

Congrats to the First Family and their new puppy. Let's remember that the First Families' pets are always news. Gerald Ford's retriever Liberty was given front page status when she whelped a litter at the White House–the Reagans had a couple of dogs-and I loved hearing about Dubya's Scotties. While I was hoping the Obamas would get a dog from a shelter, everyone please remember that President and Ms. Obama took into consideration their daughter's bad allergies. Shelter dogs, usually mixed breeds, would have made her allergies unbearable. Portugese Water Dogs are known for being non-shedders and wonderful pets for people with allergies. So leave them be. I'm glad to see this delightful story today and I'm looking forward to pics of Bo romping with the girls!

I am a volunteer for a dog rescue group – and if allergies are an issue, we won't adopt to that family. We want the dog to go to one home, and not come back due to health issues. Shelter or breeder, if the kids have health issues, it is the dog that gets returned.

You know, if we all put as much effort into helping others, coming up with constructive criticism, and being glad that we are ALIVE, we would not have as much time to HATE or even to be sitting here reading all these negative comments!

Get a life, everybody, and learn to respect the President and his family. I am a Democrat who has lived through 8 years of the BUSH disaster. I lost my business due to the economy, and 30 years of hard work and savings down the train!! I am not complaining, though!! I am helping others, trying to be positive, and spending time on the computer today (Easter) to help the company I work for - FREE GRATIS!

Let's try to work together! I have so many wonderful Republican friends–they are hoping for the best, too, and are not negative like all the rest of you.

We will have periods when the Republicans are in control–other times when the Democrats are in control. I, for one, have always tried to make the best of both of these times. I write to my congressman with suggestions, and try my bes to support our wonderful country.

An ounce of positivity is worth a TON of negativity!! Let's get busy–stay positive–and our country WILL COME BACK!!

Happy Easter!! And may the President and his family enjoy their wonderful new puppy–they need some relief from constant work!!

Why aren't all you rabid right religious zealots in church this Easter morn, instead of complaining about a puppy that the First Family has received?

Seems your time would be better spent in church praying that God will remove all the hate from your blackened and stained soul, but then again thankfully, you have 8 years of it to endure. 66% of America approves of this President and his actions.

Remember that 33% of you neo-cons are a MINORITY. Get used to it!

So, keep posting the talking points of the day, rants about puppy's only make you look more ridiculous and irrelevant!

I know the girls had to wait awhile for President and Mrs. Obama to decide on what kind of dog to get, and I for one hope they're happy. To all the small minded, hateful people who made all the nasty cracks about the President and his family...get a life, for God's sake. To the one person who questioned President Obama's faith...go to church. And to those who questioned why the president didn't get a shelter dog, maybe you weren't aware but Sasha and Melia have allergies and the Portuguese Water Dog they settled on is hypoallergenic. I am a little puzzled as to why they named the dog Bo, since that's the name of Vice President Biden's son. That might make things a bit awkward at the White House.

All you haters....this is exciting for the first family! A pound pup would not have been a good choice for little girls, could be unpredictable. Why can't people be happy for the girls, and the new First Pup? We all need a little reprieve from the crises going on in our world. Congrats to the Obamas and to Bo.

The frenzy over the frigging mutt will never be over. They will use it in an attempt to cover up his Muslim leanings.
    Case in point:
The life of the Captain being held by obamas pirate countrymen, in the mind of this administration is expendable in the interest of maintaning good relations and keeping the peace with those people.
How many others will become expendable in his quest for "CHANGE"?

This man promised his kids a puppy, so he is making good on his promise, BIG DEAL!!! Im not a big Obama supporter, but he is a good dad – Why is everyone so upset, that they didn't get someone elses problem (from a shelter)? The girls never had a puppy and they wanted one, I think getting a dog young and watching it grown with the kids is great! Its the people that get dogs without thinking it through that is the issue, not ones that just want to have a family pet of their choice & are fully equiped to handle it!!!

  21. 31% of Americans are TRAITORS for wanting America to FAIL and 69% of Americans to SUFFER!

If all of you "Obama supporters" were real supporters and not dittoheads posting as such, then you would know that President Obama NEVER promised he would find a puppy from a shelter, he said if they could find one that fit the bill for less shedding he would adopt from a shelter, but most shelter dogs were "mutts like him" therefore, they would shed. These apparantly do not since they have hair and not fur. This breed and one other one fit the bill the best for kids with allergies.

Since I have never heard of this breed prior to this I assume that shelters are not exactly overflowing with water whatever puppies. So, President Obama did not "break any campaign promise".

Besides it was gift from a cancer survivor, is supposed to say no thanks to Senator Kennedy?

The Obama girls are KIDS. Like many kids, they wanted a PUPPY. They waited patiently and finally got one. I am all for rescuing dogs but I realize some people want the attributes that certain pure breeds offer. And at least they got a "real" breed, rather than a designer mix like a labradoodle.

I cannot believe what our country has come to. If we didn't have the internet, where would all you hateful people vent? Is this how you are in real life to your family, friends and neighbors? It's Easter Sunday. Go to church or do something a little more positive. You all complain about the media covering this "trivial" bit of news instead of major world events but yet you spend the time reading this story and ranting about it. I hope you can look yourselves in the mirror every day and be proud of who you are.

To Mike Dallas....thanks for showing the world what a non-hate post looks like....NOT. Geez, practice what you preach, dude. And regarding 8 more years? Why not get through year 1 before you go pounding your chest.

Congrats to the Obama's on their dog. Hopefully all the lemmings in the world don't go and adopt on too just to turn it over to a shelter later on. Thanks!
