Obama daughters to get Portuguese water dog named 'Bo'

The president is finally fulfilling an important campaign promise - to get his daughters a new puppy now that his campaign is over.

WASHINGTON (CNN)– The frenzy over the First Dog is finally over. The Obamas are welcoming a Portuguese water dog to the White House that Sasha and Malia have named "Bo," according to two Democratic sources familiar with the secretive process.

The sources confirmed an account in Sunday's Washington Post that Sen. Edward Kennedy, who has three Portuguese water dogs, played a critical role in lining up the pup.

The puppy is set to be officially unveiled to the world on Tuesday after the Obamas host their first White House Easter egg roll on Monday.

Too bad that the President and Mrs. Obama, who I do think are exemplary parents, missed the perfect opportunity to teach their daughters about true compassion for other living beings. There are tens of thousands of dogs and cats who are euthanized each year in kill shelters due to lack of adopters and thousands more who sit waiting for adopters who never come in no-kill shelters as well.

The Obamas promised a donation to the local humane society to placate animal rescue people for not adopting a shelter dog. That donation should be delivered in person by the President, Michelle, and their daughters, so they all can see the animals in cages and get a dose of reality.

Oh and....thanks a lot, Sen. Kennedy, for not giving a hoot about animal welfare.

I`m happy for the Obama family now that they have chosen the puppy for their family. I`m sure they will have a very happy, healthy dog, something that they may not have gotten from a shelter dog. I completely agree with their decision.

I am amazed that CNN censors some politically senitive comments but has permitted vulgar posts on the dog issue.

Bo is a southern name, like those who cling to guns and relegion. I wonder what would have happened if the Bush family named their cat Letika.

So this president goes back on his statement of adopting a rescue. The losers in this deal again are the unwanted pets, both purebred and mixed, languishing and dying in shelters, not to mention the puppy mill dogs. Ideally back yard breeding should come to a halt, until the euthanasia rates drop drastically in the shelters. This may not be important to some people, but it is a sorry statement about a selfish society. He could have set a great example, but choose not to do so.

Obama is so full of himself. Naming his dog after his own initials. The Libs have no idea who they voted for. The death of America as we know it.

For all of you who are wining.

One of his daughters is allergic to dogs and that is why they could not adopt a shelter dog.

Get your facts straight: The Obamas DID NOT PROMISE to get a dog from a shelter. They said they would TRY.

Geez. Get grip people. Surely you have better things to complain about than two little girls finally getting the puppy they've always wanted.

The Obamas picked the name Bo as a passive-aggresive slap at southerners. They are eqauting southerns to dogs.

Why is there so much media coverage about this dog? I understand that as the president of the United States, you are always on the spotlight, but with so much going on in the world today, news coverage about whether or not the president and his familiy made up their minds about a new pet seems personal and irrevelant to the magnitude of global issues we face today.

First of all, it is the Obama's right to secure a puppy anywhere they choose. For all of you attacking, go outside and chase the Easter Bunny if he hasn't fouled your egg basket. Get a life!

I think they did a wonderful job of choosing the correct breed of dog for their family. As usual, they are making intelligent decisions on what is best, instead of emotional decisions or decisions on what will make them most popular. It doesn't have to be shelter dogs vs professionally bred dogs. It is in the best interest of the family and the dog to make sure it is the right dog... and people who make generous donations to dog shelters or dog rescues when it is not in the best interest to adopt a dog are to be commended for doing the right thing.

Disappointing choice. The economic recession and housing collapse has led to the abandonment of tens of thousands of U.S. dogs, and the New Orleans animal shelters still remain overwhelmed. So much for Mr. Obama identifying himself as a mutt.

There were media reports that this dog's original owner had returned the dog to the breeder for undisclosed reasons. In that sense, if this story is true, Bo IS a rescued dog. I'm all for rescuing dogs, or better yet, spaying and neutering our pets so they never produce offspring that end up in shelters, but even Cesar Millan, the famous "Dog Whisperer," advised the Obamas in a TV interview to go with a puppy from a breeder to avoid any problems that sometimes pop up with shelter dogs of unknown background. I'm thinking he might be saying that particularly for first-time dog owners which the First Family is.

What a lucky dog!.........................I was able to get a peek at "Bo"
and he is just beautiful. They will all be very busy until he is trained.
    The girls will love him.
