Obama daughters to get Portuguese water dog named 'Bo'

The president is finally fulfilling an important campaign promise -- to get his daughters a new puppy now that his campaign is over.

The president is finally fulfilling an important campaign promise - to get his daughters a new puppy now that his campaign is over.

WASHINGTON (CNN)- The frenzy over the First Dog is finally over. The Obamas are welcoming a Portuguese water dog to the White House that Sasha and Malia have named "Bo," according to two Democratic sources familiar with the secretive process.

The sources confirmed an account in Sunday's Washington Post that Sen. Edward Kennedy, who has three Portuguese water dogs, played a critical role in lining up the pup.

The puppy is set to be officially unveiled to the world on Tuesday after the Obamas host their first White House Easter egg roll on Monday.

Republicans are reaching into a toilet as far as they can reach to bash Obama, his wife, his kids, his church, his dog.

    GOP = the daily flush.

With the economy these days so bad, every local news station carries stories about the unfortunate case that people can no longer care properly for their pets and need to bring them to shelters. It is a downright shame Mr. Obama seems unaware of this crisis in shelter dogs. He had a chance to make me proud that he is my President this one time (I doubt he ever will now), by going for a shelter dog. Their are plenty of PWDs in shelters and many other purebreeds. It has nothing to do with the children it is about pleasing Ted Kennedy and the rest of the old schoolers. Same with Biden. What a bunch of heartless hypocrites. I thought he says we all need to do our share. A gesture of shelter dog adoption would go a heck a long way further than whatever donation they make to a dog shelter. These dogs need adoption and love, and instead he throws money at them just as he has done with the economy. What a loser, the emperor has no clothes.

Attn: Ernie in L.A. If America survived the last eight years, I think that America could survive just about any administration. If you have can not back up your political biased criticism with something more solid that pointing to dog's names, then please save it. The death of America? Imagined if he named his child after him. What would that mean for America?

It's funny how many of you are complaining that we should be more concerned with the economy than whether the Obamas adopted a shelter dog or not.

Funny you should mention it, as our shelters are now FULL due not to strays, but to families who've relinquished their beloved pets due to situations related to the failing economy. MANY dogs in our local shelter are purebreds.

I have four rescue animals (including one with special needs that was removed from a horrific puppy mill situation). I'd bet my child received a much more compassionate lesson than had we gone to a breeder.

Their decision saddens me, as I believe they could've made a tremendous impact on shelter animal adoptions had their decision been different. It's not a good message, in my humble opinion.

In response to MamaMage, besides shelters, there are breed rescue groups that adopt out abandoned/abused pure bred dogs. I'm sure there must be one for Portugese Water dogs. If not, there are other breeds that a person with allergies can live with that could be obtained through a breed rescue group.

I've been an Obama supporter from the start, but as a person who has done animal rescue work for decades, I feel he really dropped the ball on this one. A lot of people would have followed his example had he adopted from a shelter OR a breed rescue group. Sad.

Wow! much ado this morning about the Obama's dog....especially today on Easter. Chill out Obama lovers and haters, dog lovers and haters.....eat a few chocolate eggs. Great news, my motto is "the only thing better than a dog is two dogs, and the only thing better than two dogs is three, etc. etc. Just the fact that they are getting a dog, regardless of its origins is a good thing. A family member of mine breeds fancy show dogs. All of her kids have grown up and gone on to own at least one if not more dogs....all pound puppies. It is not the origin of the animal but the example set. Those girls will learn to raise and love a dog and their futures will be enriched by the companionship of God's critters.

Nice to see all the Operation Chaos folks pretending to be people who voted for Obama today. Happy Easter, losers!

I also love all the folks who take time out of their day to point out that this isn't important. Apparently, it's important enough for them to post.

When you people choose a pet, let all these people vote yay or nay before you take it home. Don't let your children choose.

Nixon's dog was so politicized he used it for political gain in his infamous "checkers speech". RWers have hypocrisy down to an art.

Wow!! The Republicans are out in force today!!! Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity should be proud. The hatred and negative comments expressed over a precious dog is pathetic. This is supposed to be a "fun" issue meant for light discussion, not the "end of the world" issue you are all making it out to be. Take a "chill pill" and relax a bit. We heard all about President Bush's personal life when he was in office, as well. Besides, shouldn't you Republicans be out preparing for your upcoming tea parties soon?

    SOOOOOO ??????

    This helps our economy, HOW?
    This creates more jobs, HOW?
    This makes us safer, HOW?

Stop with the celebrity status of this family already!
HIS job is to be a president and your job is to report what is relevant to his job.

I could not possibly care less about the latest dress his wife is wearing, the puppy, the swing set, or the menu at his Wednesday dinner-parties.

I do care, however, about why he keeps Geithner on board, what is our exit strategy in Afghanistan, how much are we really going to have to borrow so that he implements his multi-trillion spending spree...

Dogs? Dresses? Who the kiss, touch, or hug.... that is irrelevant and distracts the American people from the real issues and keep giving him the same kind of free passes he enjoyed since the primaries.

This pisses me off. Shelter dogs are inferior? They could have saved an animal's life and raised awareness of all the great dogs and cats that need homes–especially in this economy–but instead they encouraged dog breeders. I am extremely disappointed.

There sure are a lot of angry (jealous) people on this message board. The man can't even get his kids a DOG without people complaining. If McCain bought his wife a $200,000 outfit you would see nothing wrong with it. Oh...wait...she already has a $200,000 outfit...actually...she has a couple of them. You people need to get a grip and get over it.

The Obamas may want to check with dog experts, but I've always heard that you shouldn't give a dog a name that sounds like "No" because it will confuse the dog. "Bo" sounds like "No" and it may be a problem. They should double check on this.

Hmm, 'Socialist' didn't work. 'Driving the economy into the ground' didn't work. 'Bowing' didn't work. I know! Let's try 'He didn't get the dog from a pound'! Call the House to order and start the impeachment proceedings!

The good news is the Obamas have given a wonderful home to a dog in need. And to those who think the President is not a Christian because he hasn' t gone to church in weeks, being a Christian is more than worshipping in a building. I consider myself a Christian and I haven't attended church in years. I worship at home. Think of all the hypocrites that do go to church. There are more than a few out there.
