Minnesota has become a joke — unless you live there and would like your voice represented in the United States Senate. 161 days after the election and they’re still trying to figure out who won the senate race between incumbent Republican Norm Coleman and Democrat Al Franken.

A three-judge panel has now ruled against Coleman, saying that “Franken is entitled to receive the certificate of election” after defeating Coleman by 312 votes. But it’s unlikely that the Minnesota secretary of state will issue that certificate until all legal challenges are exhausted.

I’m exhausted watching this… looks like a Three Stooges movie. Coleman has 10 days to appeal the ruling to the state Supreme Court; and if he loses at the state level, there’s always the federal level.

give it up cole your makeing a fool of your self . your the one election night that said if i was 222 votes behined you would conseed defeat well your over 300 votes behined mr coleman . as for sux news trying to say dems are stealing that senate race, and they said nothing when the gop stole an entire election in 2000 . wake up people . take your seat mr franken you won it fair and square .

david, CA   April 14th, 2009 3:55 pm ET

The further the fight goes on and the more Coleman meets with defeat, the more convincing Franken's victory will be – except to FOX noise followers who will never accept the legitimacy of Franken because they'll be told not to. So, except for that 25 percent of the American public, Franken is more and more seen as the rightful winner of the race.

MDG Committee   April 14th, 2009 3:51 pm ET

Just to be clear what it looks like from a MN viewpoint: It's more of a One Stooge movie. Norm is the only Stooge standing. The trans-partisan 3-judge panel did their job with admirable restraint and almost infuriating patience, even when it was clear that Coleman's team of legal "talent" hadn't actually proven anything. Al Franken has kept off the stage as this thing has played itself out. He too has shown admirable patience. I think the time for patience is over. If Gov. Pawlenty wants a political future in or from this state, he had better do all that he can to put partisan wrangling aside and get Franken seated as soon as possible.

Rick   April 14th, 2009 3:51 pm ET

And who said "cheaters never prosper?"

rj   April 14th, 2009 3:49 pm ET

stop spending our money coleman! Minnesota is in a deficit and you carry on not facing the inedible. Face it, you lost.

Mike   April 14th, 2009 3:49 pm ET

Typical republican loser. Coleman is making a mockery of Minnesota and wasting the state's resources because he's in denial and can't concede defeat gracefully. "Stay the course", "Mission accomplished" and the like are bold proclamations of a tired, failed rhetoric. Americans may be sick of the current two-party system, but make no mistake about it: nothing reviles Americans more right now than Republican leadership. Otherwise the outcome of the Presidential election (and house/senate elections) would have been a lot closer, if not completely different. It's time for the GOP to admit defeat, back off, hunker down and find ways to improve its chances for 2012 rather than waste more time and resources squabbling about technicalities and bashing democrats day in and day out like it's their sacred duty.

Qui-Tam Relator   April 14th, 2009 3:48 pm ET

This is what has become of our government and our politicians, stall stall stall and then woops what happened. We have become a country of wishie washie blubbering idiots and the sad fact of this is the whole world has and is seeing us for what we are and all American's should feel ashamed and by the way this is not aimed at one party or another we are all in this together, we have become a flock of idiots.

Andy   April 14th, 2009 3:43 pm ET

What difference does it make who wins, just pick one and let call it a day

Super D   April 14th, 2009 3:36 pm ET

Kick this up to the Supream Court of Minn.

I have no confidence that a Republican is going to get a fair shake in the lower courts.

Coleman had more votes on election night, then as if by magic....during a recount that result is reveresed.

Chuck-Texas   April 14th, 2009 3:35 pm ET

Coleman has lost, and he knows that. But, he won't go away because he is keeping one senate seat, one senate vote away from the Democrats....best option left to the republicans under the circumstances. Please remember; the Republicans are the patriotic party, doing Gods work here on earth, keeping America safe, saving babies while supporting the death sentence.

Andrew   April 14th, 2009 3:34 pm ET

This is about the best shot the Republicans have in winning a Senate seat. lol lol lol

southerncousin   April 14th, 2009 3:32 pm ET

The effects of ACORN and unions on what had previously been honest elections. All of the those groups that helped make George Soros several billion dollars from the recession (and of course elect our imbecile of a president) caused this problem. When will ACORN be investigated. When will George Soros be investigated?

Yolanda   April 14th, 2009 3:32 pm ET

Minnesota must be craving attention. This is very old news.

Lynn   April 14th, 2009 3:32 pm ET

There is a winner...the Republicans just don't want to admit it and are denying equal representation...isn't that what a facist state does??

LIP   April 14th, 2009 3:32 pm ET

You know what...I am an Independant and am not a fan of Franken, but this has really gone on way to long. It is time for Coleman to throw in the towel and call it quits. A bitter pill to swallow, especially when you originally won, until Franken challanged the results and then some how, Franken wins. Lets move on anyway and learn from the lessons...

Corwin7   April 14th, 2009 3:31 pm ET

I AM DEEPLY INSULTED BY YOUR REFERENCE JACK. I spend every saturday night "late" of my teen years watching the Three Stooges movies and they were entertaining where as these stooges are just sad and a little pathetic.

Kensing James, Florida   April 14th, 2009 3:30 pm ET

Jack,

Why can't Coleman just behave as a man and accept defeat? Is the republican party, now, just a party of cry babies?

Ennis, LA   April 14th, 2009 3:30 pm ET

Coleman should demand a new election.

Steve in Las Vegas,NV   April 14th, 2009 3:28 pm ET

With either one there's NO winner! How about someone else?

Film Professor   April 14th, 2009 3:26 pm ET

The joke is Norm Coleman; what an example of a lack of class.

Give it up, Norm. You're going down. Your selfishness is hurting your state.

dave   April 14th, 2009 3:26 pm ET

After the disputed election of 2000, Al Gore conceded for the good of the country.

What makes Norm Colman so important. Norm: Get Out. If the people of MN wanted you, they would have elected you.

Given the incredible advantages that incumbents have built into the system for themselves, any incumbent who doesn't win by at least ten percent should just get out.

Rob R   April 14th, 2009 3:22 pm ET

There IS a winner, Jack, and a loser. He just doesn't want to recognize it. Meanwhile, we're left without representation...

Kyle R.   April 14th, 2009 3:18 pm ET

Sounds like the state of Minnesota needs to invest in early educational skills....like counting! Morons.

MN Independent   April 14th, 2009 3:18 pm ET

I really wish we could just vote over again. It is really frusterating to think that someone (anyone) might win by a few hundred votes. I think that should say something to BOTH individuals involved. If it was that evenly split it should show you that their were not a lot of great choices. It was a coin toss! I am sure a lot of other Minnesota voters, like myself, are frusterated at both individuals. We need representation, but obviously by a better candidate.

Lillie   April 14th, 2009 3:17 pm ET

Do they know how to count in Minnesota? They're looking foolish.

vince k   April 14th, 2009 3:17 pm ET

meh. who cares? it's just another example of the joke that is our government.
there's an opening for office. there's a campaign, two rivals pitted against each other. there's a lot of promise and arrogance (get it, which party is which?). there's an election. the elected goes into the house of governance, and then simply seeps into the sewers like the rest of them.
sorry for minnesota. but maybe we're all better off with one less senator. 49 to go!

Lou from CT   April 14th, 2009 3:15 pm ET

The time has come for Norm Coleman to step aside and let Al Franken take his place in the United States Senate. To deny the citizens of Minnesota representation for one additional minute in an affront to the electoral and democratic process.

Eric in Chicago   April 14th, 2009 3:13 pm ET

If Coleman had done his job right during his first term, his accomplishments would have stood out for him and the vote would not have been so close (with an inexperienced ex-SNL comedian). He apparently was not a friend to Minnesota voters then, and as demonstrated by his continued lack of respecting the outcome, not a friend now.

It rings especially hollow for any incumbent politician, assumed to be educated individuals, to decry broken election processes, that they alone had the power to try to change it while previously in office. The only reason Coleman would not have fixed the 'obviously broken election system', is that he thought he had an advantage the way it was...

He did not do his job the first term which obviously did not convince an overwhelming majority of Minnesota voters he should be re-elected, has lost multiple court battles arguing basically it is broke and I choose not to fix it when I could.

Shouldn't we ALL be holding politicians to a higher standard? Times are tough and we need the best and the brightest (from both parties) to get through this, and Coleman is offended he did not have the skill to beat a washed up comic? He does not sound like the best or brightest about a lot of things...

Scott the Independent   April 14th, 2009 3:10 pm ET

Actually there is a winner but the obstructionist are obstructing him from taking his seat.

David Newport, OR   April 14th, 2009 3:10 pm ET

This has a simple solution...Minnesota's Govt should pass a declaration forcing the loser to pay for ALL costs, BOTH sides. It is nothing but vindictive behavior typical of one political party that we are seeing over and over again.

steve b   April 14th, 2009 3:09 pm ET

how on earth could it take 4 additional months to recount the votes correctly?

Even the creeps at Acorn would have come up with a resolution by now.

Sam   April 14th, 2009 3:09 pm ET

The test of democracy anywhere is not whether you will respect elections when you win–it is whether you will respect elections when you lose. The suspicion is growing that the Republican Party of Minnesota does not respect the outcome of elections when they lose.

Mike G   April 14th, 2009 3:08 pm ET

Wasn't Coleman asking Frankin not the challenge after the initial count looked like Coleman would win? Oh the hypocrisy.

kiran, PA   April 14th, 2009 3:05 pm ET

Jack,

I am wondering the same thing, why is this battle still going on? Then i realized the answer is that the GOPs will do anything to prevent democracy from happening because that is what they do best. They call Obama and his supporters socialists but the real threat is the GOPs with their gun-toting, racist and commy viewpoints.

phoenix86   April 14th, 2009 3:03 pm ET

Come ACORN, put some more money on the table. Buy more judges and get Franken into the Senate.

Dutch-VA   April 14th, 2009 3:03 pm ET

This isn't even news anymore. Franken won!! The election system needs an overhaul. This makes no dam sense Jack.

Sammy   April 14th, 2009 3:01 pm ET

They are right it is a joke. But its also a tragedy worthy of Shakespeare because if somehow Coleman overturns all the rulings and wins he will he a pariah who in many eyes stole an election via legal maneuverings. Saw that once before and it didnt turn out so well.

But more importantly, I am sure the republican national party is really pushing him to continue the fight so they can hopefully change the balance in the senate. It's nothing more. Thats their right but they should stop with the silly 'fairness' arguments. It's shameful that they think that most people wouldnt know better.

KD   April 14th, 2009 3:00 pm ET

Just ridiculous! Coleman lost. Give it up! Just when I thought the Republican party could stoop no lower.

joanne   April 14th, 2009 2:59 pm ET

it is too nad the GOP i so desperate for any body to fill the seats..maybe they should acquie smartr peple.

JonDie   April 14th, 2009 2:57 pm ET

Al Franken won the election; the joke is on the people of Minnesota thanks to Norm "the Joker" Coleman, who has tried to win in court what he couldn't win at the ballot box.

Jeff in Virginia   April 14th, 2009 2:53 pm ET

This election is over, and Al Franken won.

It is no surprise that Coleman says he will wait before issuing his challenge as delaying Franken is all that Coleman has left.

Rick   April 14th, 2009 2:53 pm ET

It's time for Norm to give it up so Minnesota can have a voice in the US Senate. He is just a sore looser. He himself said after the election, if it were he who was behind he would concede. Practice what you preach Norm and let it go.

Craig - Hastings, MN   April 14th, 2009 2:53 pm ET

Hello from the still "one senator short" state Jack.

I for one hope that this fiasco will finally wake people up to the idea that we can elect someone other than a Democrat or a Republican. The MN Independence Party ( not to be confused with those Alaskan nut cases) has been fielding fine candidates for years now (Dean Barkley in this last Senate race). Time for a "BIG" change Jack.

Elaine   April 14th, 2009 2:52 pm ET

Medtronics is in mn. Coleman is prob. getting backed by them not to change medical device safety act. Why haven't we seen more press on this issue. New england journal of medicine had an article last week and there has been nothing.

Willie Mae   April 14th, 2009 2:52 pm ET

Seat Franken and put this to rest.

bup   April 14th, 2009 2:51 pm ET

"They're still trying to figure out who won the senate race between incumbent Republican Norm Coleman and Democrat Al Franken."

That's just false. Nobody's trying to figure it out. Everybody knows Franken won, including Coleman, Tim Pawlenty and the Secretary of State. All they're doing now is blocking Franken as long as they can.

Matt   April 14th, 2009 2:49 pm ET

How about this Jack. Neither of them get to be Senator and the Govenor of Minnesota appoints Alaskas Ted Stevens to be their Senator for one term. He is the only person who deserves to be called a Senator. Hey Jack I also noticed you omit the fact that Coleman won the election and that Frankens 500+ vote lead came from the questionable recount standards. Why is that?

Emilie in Minneapolis   April 14th, 2009 2:49 pm ET

Just one stooge, not three, but you got the genre right, I think. I'm reminded of Jim Janos relating his father's opinion that politicians are crooks. The proof: they spend a million dollars to get a job that pays 1/10th of that. Coleman has two kids in college and a house with a $750K mortgage, AND NO JOB that pays anything close to that level of outgo. I wish we could follow the money so we could find out who is getting what he wants, because somebody is getting exactly what he is paying for. I have stopped believing that Norm is anything but a cats' paw in this affair–and yes, "cat's paw" is another term for "stooge."

Kat   April 14th, 2009 2:48 pm ET

Coleman is the world's biggest sore loser at this point - give it up! Franken won, continues to defeat you in courts... maybe it's time to admit that you lost the thing and go home.

Afa Adam   April 14th, 2009 2:48 pm ET

Greed is all contributing this... Why not concede and prepare to fight another day.

Waste of money for those who keep on contributing to this loosing cause and worst all to the MN tax payers.

Irene   April 14th, 2009 2:47 pm ET

Typical GOP. It's all about winning for the party. Screw the people, screw the country, just as long as the GOP is in power... These guys are sickening and it is good that America is waking up from the Bush nightmare and realizing that the GOP is bad for everybody except the ultra-rich. Go home Coleman. You're a loser!

Perhaps   April 14th, 2009 2:47 pm ET

G.O.P is determined to keep this going....it is a G.O.P strategy..nothing more....

Ken   April 14th, 2009 2:47 pm ET

I'm sorry Mr. Cafferty, but there IS a winner in the MN senate race. It is Franken...by every completed vote count that has been taken. Lacking an actual vote-count win, Coleman and his [R] cohorts resort to wasting the court's time with specious trivialities. It is a pathetic display of hypocrisy, as the very people who rail against lawsuit abuse and an overly litigious society are themselves a primary abuser of trivial lawsuits.

ant   April 14th, 2009 2:47 pm ET

Norm Coleman is a sore loser.

Milly West   April 14th, 2009 2:45 pm ET

AIN'T IT OBVIOUS? Coleman has his marching orders from GOP Chief Limbuaugh and the GOP drones to appeal for all 6 years of Franken's term.

Watchful Cowboy   April 14th, 2009 2:43 pm ET

The real man will stand up – concede and allow Minnesota to have representation!

John   April 14th, 2009 2:43 pm ET

Wasn't Coleman once ragging on Franken for not bowing out several months ago?

Shoe's on the other foot now. Kinda pinches, eh Norm?

Matt   April 14th, 2009 2:42 pm ET

When Gore tried to challenge the outcome in Florida in 2000 wasn't it the republicans who screamed from the moutain tops that delaying the process was bad for the country? That only lasted until December and certainly didn't deny an entire state a voice. The partisain politics coming off the right is sad.

Kimberly in AZ   April 14th, 2009 2:41 pm ET

coleman is a typical republican, party first, country last. He does NOT care about the state, if he did he would grow up, pick up his marbles and GO HOME! Like blago in Chicago, this kind of political grandstanding is non-sense!! Atleast Blago had an insanity excuse, this idiot is just a political hack!!! Shame on him, and he now is probably one of the most hated men in Minn.

Annette   April 14th, 2009 2:38 pm ET

This is absolutely ridiculous and an insult to the constituents of Minnesota.

Joanna   April 14th, 2009 2:35 pm ET

Ok enough already. Franken won. But coleman has the right to to contest i guess. But things are not leaning towards him at all, it just has increased Frankens lead. I see the GOP calling foul, but this is nothing like the bush gore issue. Gore won, but apparently votes didn't matter than. Can you imagine what a better world we would be living in if the rightful winner took office! Gore did indeed win, and franken has won too, but coleman should seek all legal avenues so there are no crazy made up theories to follow.

Ted Tartaglia   April 14th, 2009 2:35 pm ET

Coleman just exemplifies the Party of NO!. The right wing wackos cannot get over the fact that they lost the election so the only thing they can do is try to obstruct the winning party as much as they can.

It is time for Rush, Newt, McConnell, and Boehner to quit their partisanship games and work with the current administration to get the country back on track.

Molly Weasley   April 14th, 2009 2:34 pm ET

Actually, there is a winner. It's Al Franken. Norm Coleman just won't admit it.

And if Gov. Tim Pawlenty had any decency, he would sign the certificate and let Minnesota Sen. Franken get sworn in.

Florida Joe   April 14th, 2009 2:34 pm ET

What happened to Senator Coleman trying to "spare the voters" by asking Franken to concede rather than recount......now Coleman has no concern about the voters being left without a Senator only about himself.........This is just a desperate attempt by the Republicans to keep Democratic Senator 59 from coming on board..........Pathetic

U.S. Grant   April 14th, 2009 2:33 pm ET

It isn't the fact its taken 5 months to get here that makes Minnesota the joke – it's the fact that anyone in Minnesota voted for an idiot like Al Franken to be their US SENATOR.

David, Beaufort, SC   April 14th, 2009 2:33 pm ET

It seems, in matters of democracy in action, the Republicans have twisted their elongating trunks into quite a hypocritical knot.

By GOP persuasion in 2000, the Supreme Court ruled that counting in Florida must stop - giving the election to Bush.

But now comes Sen. Norm Coleman (R- MN), encouraged by the national GOP and righteous Republicans across the globe, fighting on to the highest court in MN to insist on more vote counting, even though experts and judges have declared the 312 vote victory by his opponent to be correct.

Have the Republicans no shame at all ? No.
Have they no sense of how the public views such hypocrisy ? No.

Are they really that lacking in class, leadership, principle, and appreciation of the democratic process ? Emphatically, yes.

jaye   April 14th, 2009 2:30 pm ET

There is a winner and his name is Al Franken.
It's time Coleman stops his nonsense and moves on...by the way, where are the criminal charges against Coleman? What are they waiting for?

Michael in Houston, Texas   April 14th, 2009 2:28 pm ET

What’s wrong is Jack, we have become a nation of crybabies and sore losers. They counted the darn votes 100 times already, enough is enough. Get it together Minnesota or we will trade you to Canada for some round Bacon and a couple of ottles of whiskey! I’m sure they wont mind you holding up thier government.

Veteran in Kansas   April 14th, 2009 2:27 pm ET

It's time for Coleman to do the right thing and congratulate Senator Franken so that the people of Minnesota can have their proper representation in the US Senate. What a loser.

Dan s   April 14th, 2009 2:27 pm ET

Every day this is on appeal is another day Al Franken is not further diluting what little respect is left for Congress. That can only be a good. thing.

Will   April 14th, 2009 2:26 pm ET

At this point Coleman has no chance of winning and is just trying to prevent a Democrat from being seated in the senate. He used to be respected here in Minnesota. Now he is the joke.

John in Binghamton   April 14th, 2009 2:25 pm ET

The is making a joke of both our legal system and our election process. Keep appealing until you win??? It is clear that the republicans are simply trying to keep Franken out of office so they can obstruct and filibuster.

Joshua   April 14th, 2009 2:22 pm ET

This is ridiculous – Norm Coleman is preventing the citizens of Minnesota from having their proper representation in the Senate. I would be more sympathetic if it was a split ruling or if more of his arguments had shown merit. But the court unanimously ruled against him, and the court was by no means partisan, being comprised of a Democrat, a Republican and an independent. For someone who originally campaigned on not being a typical politician, he certainly looks like he's desperately trying to hang on to his job by any means necessary, which seems rather typical to me.

ron   April 14th, 2009 2:20 pm ET

ACORN is the true winner here.

LaTreetha E. Sharpley   April 14th, 2009 2:20 pm ET

It is truly silly for this race (if thats what it should be called) is still going. Ex-senator Coleman, should let it go and find another occupation. He can run again in 6 years, maybe thats what he is trying to do, keep the race open for 6 years.

ron   April 14th, 2009 2:20 pm ET

...especially if franken (barney frank's illegit' love child, i'm sure) wins, there is no winner for the next 6 years.

Jimmy the Greek   April 14th, 2009 2:19 pm ET

Appeal Appeal Appeal!!

The longer Franken is kept OUT of Congress the better!
