From

(CNN) – Michelle Obama stopped at the Department of Homeland Security Tuesday, thanking employees for working on the "president's greatest concerns and priorities."

"If you do your jobs well, few people will ever know about anything that you do," she said. "For others, the hope is that you never have to execute much of what you work so hard to prepare for."

The first lady also gave a special mention to the "excellence" of the Secret Service, who operate under the DHS, for the safety of her family.

"Every day I see how much time they spend away from their own families to keep mine safe," she said. "And it has been an honor to get to know each and every one of them throughout the course of the campaign, and our day-to-day interactions."

A president and first lady that are down right humble, gracious, and compassionate... who knew?

May God protect you both, President Obama and First Lady Obama

TO SHAME & LEFT OUT IN THE COLD

Shame wrote: "DHS is turning into the next 'jack booted thugs' from the Clinton years….and Mrs Obama is proud of them??"

Dude!

First...

DHS was created by the Bush administration after the terrorist attacks on 911. Sadly, president Clinton was well out of the picture on that fateful day.

Also, I'm sure you had a much "different" opinion of "troop thanking, et al.," when Bush staged all of those phony meet-and-greets throughout his terms in office.

You just can't stand it, can you.

You lost. Get over it. As you're wont to say...

America! Love it or LEAVE it!

cobra   April 14th, 2009 6:04 pm ET

She would be a little less disrespected if she kept her mouth shut, she knows nothing!

TjayeInLA   April 14th, 2009 6:00 pm ET

Just grace.

Josh in TN   April 14th, 2009 5:51 pm ET

May God bless the first lady and the president. They do this country well.

IndyVoter   April 14th, 2009 5:49 pm ET

'CHANGE we need', 'Left Out In the Cold', and 'Little Too Late' are obviously the same person. Stop with the DHS tirade already. I do not believe for one minute that the Secy of HS is anti-veteran in any way...And as far as our First Lady is concerned, this is how she is choosing to support her husband. He asked her to do it. She's capable of it and he's smart to utilize his wife. That's what companions are for.

jason, TX   April 14th, 2009 5:47 pm ET

The haters on here look really stupid.

The First Lady is competent, stately, and a gracious person. Good for her! I am proud that she is our first lady!.

Ken   April 14th, 2009 5:47 pm ET

David

Michelle has a paid make up artist but you failed to note
it is paid for by the Obama's not the tax payer

Aware of the sensitivity about public spending during the recession – and of previous criticism of expensive political haircuts – the first couple paid for the expenses of having a make-up artist in their entourage out of their own pocket, according to a spokeswoman for Mrs Obama.

Michigan Teacher   April 14th, 2009 5:44 pm ET

Mrs. Obama is a class act. She impresses me as a wonderful wife, mother, and daughter. It does my heart well to know our President goes "home" to such a wonderful family.

Tulsa   April 14th, 2009 5:44 pm ET

LOL... once again the GOP shows it's true, albeit nasty, colors. Mrs. Obama thanks people who don't get much of a "thank you" and all the Republican posters here can do is insult her.

If you want to know why your party LOST, look at the losers it's made up of.

The rest of us are damn tired of the party of "NO".

Penny   April 14th, 2009 5:43 pm ET

If Mrs. Obama is at home or in the "streets" she still guarded. Same with all past presidents, wifes and family.

shannon   April 14th, 2009 5:33 pm ET

that was a gracious, nice thing for her to say and acknowledge.

EBC   April 14th, 2009 5:26 pm ET

I love our First Lady, she's a wonderful and very competent woman in her own right. She's proving that she's not a follower, but a leader when it comes to "thinking outside the box". She's very refreshing and very nice on the eyes, such a gorgeous woman!!

ANAG LOS ANGELES, CA   April 14th, 2009 5:26 pm ET

@Jeff

Behind a great man, theres a great woman. And she's probably more in charge than you think hah ;)

Go Michelle!

Dan, TX   April 14th, 2009 5:26 pm ET

When I see the criticisms here I just have to laugh. There is indeed strong concern that the US is taking on too much debt. We are going to have to raise taxes and cut spending. In two years, the recession will be nearly over and we can do those things. But don't complain about taxes being raised. We have to have our taxes raised if we ever want to get out of debt. That was not true under Bill Clinton, we could have kept the tax rates the same and not lowered them. We'd be only $5 triillion in debt instead of the $15 trillion in debt we will have after Obama's first term. But I trust Obama a lot more to raise taxes and cut spending then any republican.

Sue   April 14th, 2009 5:20 pm ET

This is such crap! These people are well paid!!! overpaid!! for escortiong this woman on all of her jaunts across the countrey and the world!!! She could thank us better by staying HOME and saving OUR money for her photo shots!!

Trixy, MN   April 14th, 2009 5:17 pm ET

If you dont see anything good in Michelle O. Then you need to ask yourself, what is wrong with me. I bet those of you who are not happy with her is because you feel so inferior or ont other hand you have no degree or a low degrees in your pockets to show off. Alternatively you have HS drop outs at least one of the above and hate to see high powered individuals. She is not like every woman, she is an aspiration to our daughters, she is highly powered woman academically but still simple and understands life the way you (clowns) and me understand it. stop comparing the past first ladies with Michellele, they will never be the same that is a fact. she has her talents and let her use them. Stop critizing her when she thanks the secret services, that is a gesture of appreciation and eveyone needs that .

maria in east l.a.   April 14th, 2009 5:16 pm ET

Mrs. Obama is being criticized for a 'thank you"? Wow, some negative people are really twisted!!

Brian G, Sugar Land, TX   April 14th, 2009 5:14 pm ET

The lady is gracious...always. I'm in luuuuv!

RealityKing   April 14th, 2009 5:14 pm ET

Homeland Security – More wasting taxpayers money...

JML   April 14th, 2009 5:14 pm ET

WHAT a Lady, Mrs. M. Obama is, VERY classy. You go First Lady Obama!

Too True For You   April 14th, 2009 5:09 pm ET

What a class act. The Chicago Sun Times reported that she was the first to visit the Dept. of the Interior since Eleanore Roosevelt.

And she absolutely SHOULD be doing this – what is wrong with the First Lady thanking the departments her husband oversees? Nothing. The media focus on her brings a little attention to some of these workers that rarely get it. It's a considerate gesture delivered in a generous fashion.

Polly   April 14th, 2009 5:06 pm ET

Well done!

Ken from missouri   April 14th, 2009 5:05 pm ET

This woman is great pure and simple she is a class act and I'm proud that she is our first lady.

chris   April 14th, 2009 5:03 pm ET

Next is the Guitar Hero "Obama" version.

Mike in VA   April 14th, 2009 5:01 pm ET

Yes, the DHS will keep an eye on things... especially those conservative right wing extremists tomorrow protesting your husbands policies!!!

Ray Fisher   April 14th, 2009 5:01 pm ET

The first family continues to impress by recognizing others as they lead by example not rhetoric!!!

Gambi   April 14th, 2009 4:59 pm ET

There are 2 words in the english language that are so powerful,
"Thank You" is so simple to say, so wonderful to hear and so uplifting when you are working so hard to do a good job and someone cares enough to say "thank you." Our dear First Lady understands what it means to reach out in a simple sincere way. What an example to all of us. Michele we are so grateful to have you as our First Lady. Thank you.

Shamed   April 14th, 2009 4:58 pm ET

DHS is turning into the next 'jack booted thugs' from the Clinton years....and Mrs Obama is proud of them?? Considering vets a threat, but changing the title of suicide bombers to a man made disaster is pathetic.

Mrs Obama needs to be a mother to her children and a supporting wife to her husband. Thank the Secret Service in private (which they would prefer) and steer clear of the DHS...and don't forget to thank the VETERANS!

Get Well Soon GOP   April 14th, 2009 4:58 pm ET

Little too late???? is right. She should thank Tim McVae and people like him. Get Well Soon GOP.

Kitty   April 14th, 2009 4:56 pm ET

LOL – what a mess the Obama's are creating!!! We will be the broke by the time his term is up!!!

How lucky we are to have such an intelligent and classy woman as first lady.

We love you Mrs. Obama!
_____________________________________________________-
Please watch how you use the word "we" . Not all of us love her or even like her. I respect the office of the president but I do not respect the Obama's for the things they have done since being in office. For all that is being said about how bad of a president Bush was, Obama has already done far worse in my book. All they are, are yes people even worse than what the Clintons were and are.

NYC REPUB   April 14th, 2009 4:53 pm ET

LEFT out in the cold........

Get a grip....or keep up w/ the news... she's always w/ the soldier's families....on a regular basis. Thanking them for their husband's/wives service..... I know, my sister-in-law at Fort Braggs, took a picture last month w/ her, upon her visit to the base......her and others also sat for lunch and discussed issues facing military families....

Enlightened Voter   April 14th, 2009 4:53 pm ET

Steve. NC   April 14th, 2009 4:52 pm ET

I am proud not only to have Barack Obama as our President, but also of Michelle, the most pro-active kind of First Lady we have had in many years.

Matt, Chico, CA   April 14th, 2009 4:52 pm ET

I would rather be put to sleep by Laura Bush than put in the hospital listening to Michelle Obama

Little too late????   April 14th, 2009 4:52 pm ET

Again, the same woman who is finally proud to be an American travels in a military jet or helo, has dedicated personal protection and her own personal staff.

Rather than thanking those in the DHS, maybe she should thank the vets that are considered 'homeland security threats' BY the DHS.

Another episode of ready, fire, aim from the First Family...

Hey Jeff
I'll bet your one of those men who thinks women should be seen and not heard. I pity your poor wife if you have one.

ADT   April 14th, 2009 4:48 pm ET

Ms First Lady keep on doing what you are doing. I feel that this country is lucky to have someone like you as the United States of America's First Lady. Our little girls, young ladies and Women are learning alot from you in all aspects God bless you and your family and God bless the United States of America.

Ryan   April 14th, 2009 4:44 pm ET

I've never seen a first lady thanks them – and to the idiot who thought George Bush created the secret service under Homeland security... you need to check your facts. He only created that dept to have a reason to treat Americans like WE were the criminals with wire-tapping and invasive TSA checks at airports...post 9/11... which happened on his watch because he ignored the CIA & FBI reports that he was stirring up motives for enemies.

Luke Brown   April 14th, 2009 4:42 pm ET

What a wonderful First Lady. Makes me feel real good that the President of the United States goes home every night and talks things over with her.

REFRESHING   April 14th, 2009 4:41 pm ET

WOW, Jeff, tell us how you really feel! You are right, she is not an elected official and your are also correct to say she is No Hillary, however she still is the First Lady of our Land. There is nothing wrong with her expressing her gratitude to the services that help keep our country running. This well educated, articulate woman can be elected to some branch of government if she so chooses, that is not her style unlike Sarah who thinks she can run anything and know more than others just because she kills animals. Michelle could run circles around Sarah. People don't understand that the Obamas could have made a lot of money after graduating from Law School, could have been at some huge law firm, instead President went into community organization. They are not glitz and glamour and Michelle is so down to earth unlike Laura, are we sure she was not British, such a uptight woman, stiff upper lip.

cary   April 14th, 2009 4:41 pm ET

David – You're stretching the truth for your own spin. Michelle Obama pays for Ms. Grimes-Miles beauty services on occasion, just as every first lady pays for different beauty services from time to time.

CHANGE we need   April 14th, 2009 4:41 pm ET

Rather than praising SS AND DHS, she should have stuck to praising the Secret Service.

After all, this is the same organization that calls veterans 'threats' and homocide bombers 'man-made disasters'...OMG, please!!!! DHS Secretary Napoliatano may be political poison and have to tender a letter of resignation!! ...and Mrs Obama is patting her on the back. Tisk tisk...

ANGIE   April 14th, 2009 4:38 pm ET

Michelle Obama is a wonderful first lady. Very humble and she cares about others. Such a welcome change. Thank You Mrs. Obama.

bobowen   April 14th, 2009 4:37 pm ET

michelle obama crosses all manner of lines...not the least of which is her wonderful ability to make BOTH women AND men extremely proud! she is NOT, however, a class ACT...rather she is a class REALITY!!!

LEFT out in the cold   April 14th, 2009 4:35 pm ET

Dont forget, Mrs Obama, to thank the DHS Secretary and her staff for calling 'returning veterans a threat to homeland security'. ...and of course no mention of that.

Praising the organization that singles out the men/women who veil her country in safety is insulting and degrading to men/women in uniform...AND out of uniform. Shame on you, Mrs Obama and DOUBLE shame on DHS...

Frank   April 14th, 2009 4:35 pm ET

The Department of Homeland Security.

Created by President George W. Bush.

She should be thanking him.

Ken in NC   April 14th, 2009 4:34 pm ET

@ jeff & Keith in Austin

The 2 of you really got it bad. Can't you make an attitude change and acknowledge something positive when it happens and stop being so critical?

Michelle Obama is making every effort to help people keep positive attitudes in hard times. We don't need a lot of negative. There was more than enough of it thrust upon us when our retirement accounts got robbed by the financial sector.

Classy   April 14th, 2009 4:13 pm ET

Finally....a first lady that is nothing short of total class!

She also happens to be human unlike Laura Bush the robot.

David   April 14th, 2009 4:13 pm ET

Michelle Obama is the 1st First Lady in history to have a paid, full-time make-up artist on staff. You see, the thing with the obamas is 'do as I say, not as I do'.

Ernestine   April 14th, 2009 4:13 pm ET

Its good to see such a powerful person be so humble.

jeff   April 14th, 2009 4:13 pm ET

It is great that she wants to speak out but she is not an elected official.
She should find something that she loves and get involved and champion it. She should not be running around to all these government agencies and making speaches.
She is married to the man in charge she is not the one in charge
