Texas governor says secession possible

mug.mooney

(CNN) - Texas Gov. Rick Perry isn't ruling out the possibility his state may one day secede from the nation.

Speaking to an energetic and angry tea party crowd in Austin Wednesday evening, the Lone Star State governor suggested secession may happen in the future should the federal government not change its fiscal polices.

"There's a lot of different scenarios," Perry said. "We've got a great union. There's absolutely no reason to dissolve it. But if Washington continues to thumb their nose at the American people, you know, who knows what might come out of that. But Texas is a very unique place, and we're a pretty independent lot to boot." (Video below: Tea party fires up debate)

Perry, who is beginning to gear up for what could be a challenging re-election race, rejected more than $500 million in federal stimulus funds earlier this year and has been highly critical of President Obama's stimulus package.  (Related: Joe "The Plumber" speaks at Michigan tea party)

His comments come a week after endorsing a resolution in the Texas state House reasserting state sovereignty over federal mandates.

Specifically it states that "all compulsory federal legislation that directs states to comply under threat of civil or criminal penalties or sanctions or that requires states to pass legislation or lose federal funding be prohibited or repealed."

Texas, America's second biggest state in area and population, was its own nation for 10 years before joining the United States in 1845.

Should Texas one day secede, one man may already be vying to be its president. Actor Chuck Norris said last month he may be interested in the post.

“I may run for president of Texas,” Norris wrote in a column posted at WorldNetDaily. “That need may be a reality sooner than we think. If not me, someone someday may again be running for president of the Lone Star state, if the state of the union continues to turn into the enemy of the state.”

First Alaska, now Texas. What is wrong with these governors? There are 50 states. Not 49, nor 48. I wonder Dubya thinks about Texas seceding.

Right I suspect Mr perry will no longer be governor of Texas before long.

Then agan he was hand picked by George W Bush, would not expect anything less.

I suggest let Texas go!! We can build a border fence around Texas and use Texas as a buffer for Mexican violence. Maybe Geoerge W will get called back up in the reserves to defend Texas – that would be funny!!!

Sounds like a great idea to the other 49 states, especially if they're keeping the Bush family!

I am from Texas, but now live in Cali. Rick Perry just needs to go away. He barely won the last election (he had 30 something percent). He only won because there were so many people in the race. Isn't suggesting your state secede an act or treason?

I was borned and raised in Texas and I love my home state, but I have to say that Mr. "Good Hair" needs to take a step back. His rhetoric is ludicrous to say the least. He already knows that there is a high probability he will lose the election so he is trying to fire up the extreme right. Luckily, there are smarter people than he thinks in Texas...

I reside in Tulsa Oklahoma and am proud to hear you stance and support you entirely. I would even move to the great state of Texas if this situation become worse. We are taxed way too much already and for the federal government to unconstitutionally feel they can push the little people around is not right. I appreciate your efforts and if there is anything I can do to assist please let me know.

As usual, it sounds like even Rick Perry doesn't know what Rick Perry is talking about.

Is he saying that Washington's behavior has been a problem for a long time? If so, he's throwing his own party under the bus, since they ran DC for the past 8 years.

Or is he saying that, after 3 whole months of Obama, it's already time to secede?

Either way... how did this guy get elected again?

Texas may not be the only state.

It saddens me to see things like this happen. Not unprecedented, though... the Soviet Union was once a union of 15 "states", and now they're 15 independent nations.

I guess it's just a matter of time. The states, after all, formed the federal union to promote their common welfare. When more and more states see the enormous expansion of the federal government far beyond what the founding fathers intended and infringing on state's rights, more and more will be talking like this.

I'm glad to see the Republicans show their TRUE colors. And they aren't Red, White, or Blue! Yea, seceding the nation would really help... This is the reason why a Republican is not in charge of this country. Why would we digress and split up the UNITED States of America? It is this type of thinking that has and will always do more damage to this country than ANY terrorist. And if Texas thinks this is a good idea, they should get NO TAX MONEY from this country thery want to abandon and furthermore, they should not be able to use our resources. However, my heart goes out to the Democrats that live in that Bushland they call Texas.

Where was all his sceaming when his Texas bud "W" was spending like a wildman? Where was his moral barameter when the Bill of Rights were suspended because "W" said so? Now, if a republican Govenor doesn't like what is going on, we go straight to secession? First Alaska, now Texas. To threaten seceession, isn't that, by defiinition, a form of treason? So, if i ma understanding correctly, this is a high-stakes game of "if I don't get what I want, I'll take my ball and go home"? I strongly believe that if Palin or Mooney were Democrats, a Republican lynch mob would be chasing them through the woods. Will someone please tell me what Palin and Mooney are doing to actually HELP the country they allegedly pledged allegience to?

They are tuly shameful. Just because they lost in the last election and aren't the "ruling class" anymore, they are threatening to seceede? What poor American's they are. When democrats lost and had to put up with Republican rule, which we disagreed with just as much as they do now, you didn't see New York threatening to seceede from the Nation. What a bunch of prejudiced, redneck, unAmerican cry babies. They will not be happy until they create even more violence and hatred between Americans. YOU LOST get over it. A democracy can not survive if the loosing side can not accept the fact that the majority does not agree with them.

All of this because a democrate (Black) President was elected this fall. Americans voted who thought was the best choice and some people just can't stomach that. Perry has a very short memory... Reagan and Bush abused the right to an abortion the same way he is complaining about Federal Rules in legislation now. Those Republican Presidents restricted funding to Abortion Clinics stating that they could get funds but dictated what they could spend it on. This is the same thing he is complaining about the Stimulus funds but under a Republican President.

Why didn't he complain then? Because of politics. Just like this grandstanding is for.. pure partisan politics.

I suspect the federal government wouldn't take kindly to such an action. Last time there was a disagreement concerning state rights versus federal oversight, it resulted in several states seceding from the union. Of course, we know how the civil war turned out.

These people are really ridiculas, and what is especially sad is that this king of silliness is coming from one of their own elected officials..Where was all this talk for the past 8years when the formed WH was busy running up our budget, and spending out of control..Funny all this talk comes after the election of Obama....Well i think if he continues to talk about this, he may be in a state all by himself and won;t have to worry about getting re-elected..Fine example this guy is setting for the country ! He's as absurd as all those tea-baggers who have lost touch with reality

Idiot. It would be treasonous – if the guy had any idea what he was talking about. Texas – the next Somalia! It seems there are as many right-wing wackos in Texas as there are left-wing wackos in California, and to the rest of us, there's not much difference. Here's another idea: No state ought to be allowed to get so big that it endangers it's own people as well as others. Split both Texas and California up into 3 or 4 smaller states each.

Rick "the stick" Perry is up for re-election..he has never been this vocal but saw how it brought Palin to the forefront..he needs all the help he can get cause he is not well liked outside of his base...Texas isn't going anywhere but hopefully Perry will come next election!!!

If we did suceed, I am sure he realizes that the military bases would go away..as will any federal border agents...when we are battered by hurricanes I hope he knows that he wouldn't be able to contact the federal government for assistance, etc...

Another one with his hair glued on too tight!!! There is a reason that his mansion was destroyed by arson....he needs to stop embarrassing himself and the state...this is treason..he should apologize or get out of office...he was just whipping the base up into a frenzy...I would hope he isn't dumb enough to stay on this path!!!

Thanks for giving him his 15 mins of fame...

This country was founded on States Rights and local Government controling local issues. The Federal Government is not needed to fund schools and Police...these all can be handled and taxed for on the local level.

Interesting how the secession talk comes up. Perry speaks in strong tones to the fringe elements at the 'tea party'

The thing is that for all the talk of socialism and big government, this same element supported Bush while he enlarged the federal government and started us down this recovery road. TARP began as a republican plan, or is that forgotten already?

On the other side of this, if the government sits by and lets huge companies fold, it's not just the companies and big business failing, there are countless jobs lost, plus the domino effect, if they go out of business. While not a fan of big government, I think Obama deserves more than a couple months in office before we assign blame for all this mess to him. Eight years of Bush politics got us here.

I would love to see Texas secede...the country would get rid of a lot of waste. I am amused how these fools cry about big government now that their idiotic leader has been removed. Not only did George W. Bush remove more of our individual rights than any other president in history he also expanded the government enormously. Basically, its not when will Texas secede but how soon?.....and also please take the majority of the backward evangelical christian conservatives with you.

I never thought that texocentricism would go to this extent. When I lived in that state, I learned that Tejas meant friendship. According to tradition, the true Texans, Native Americans, greeted the European settlers with this word. I also remember the motto "Don't mess with Texas." What I remember of Texas personally is that the people could be friendly, but I also remember those who showed another, not so friendly, side of that great state. Texas has produced great people and done great things for our the Union. Therefore, it saddens me that it is now under the control of someone who has no business governing. With his irresponsible words, Governor Perry has fueled the fires of secessionist thinking. It may be a bit early to say that treason is being committed, but I feel strongly that Perry, Norris and others are leading Texas down a dangerous path. This cannot help Texas or the United States of America. If Texas continues down this path, I have no doubt that other like-minded states will follow. We have a real problem here, and I am very concerned. I urge Texans and people who live in areas that are similarly disposed to speak out against those who would tear up the fabric of our great nation. Thank you.

    More crack pots.

#1 It's a myth about Texas reserving the right to succeed if they want to.

#2 Perry now knows the tide has turned against him for re-election and will say or do anything to get the GOP in Texas motivated.

#3 These Tea Parties yesterday did nothing but illustrate a lack of knowledge on the original Boston Tea Party which was about a lack of representation, hey guess what Texas – you just had 8 years of representation in the White House – how'd that work out?

Go right ahead, Texas, and take Norris with you. What do we need Texas for, anyway? The only thing to come out of there was the Bushes, and look what that did for the country. Maybe Bush could run against Norris for Pres of TX and work his fiscal magic on that state...oh, that's right, he took a surplus and turned it into a huge deficit. Good luck with that, Texas, and good riddance.

And any Governor who is preaching secession ought to be looked at for treason. He's obviously not putting this country first. Why don't you take care of all the drug wars going on there before poking your nose outside of your state where it doesn't belong?

This is by far the dumbest thing I have ever heard. Secession would be an immediate threat to US security, and thus Texas would be promptly FORCED back into the union, and forever looked upon as the bastard child of the US. Just goes to show you how stupid, ignorant and detached right wing republicans really are. have fun withdrawing from the union as our economy turns around and the US becomes the industrial capital of the world again... and we'll let Texas rot with the mexicans.

    Secession is unlawful.
With the exception of the original thirteen States, all of the other States were originally Federal Territory.

All of the States that were originally Federal Territory, petitioned Congress and requested that they be granted Statehood and they agreed to abide by the laws of the United States.

These States can't lawfully secede and declare themselves independant from the jurisdiction of the United States.
If they no longer want to be a State, their only lawful option is to request that Congress revoke their status as a State and return to the status of a Federal territory.

Fine. Get started on the big fence for Texas' northern border (less Mexican border problems for the Texas-less US). Say goodbye to all US military and government assets. Enjoy your next big gulf coast hurricane on your own dime.

Re-elections make politicians say even stupider things than usual. It's a neat little fantasy to think of Texas as an independent country but it's just political gambit to reinforce the power base of the current governor and his elected brethren. Gov. Perry should stop receiving all Federal monies and operate as an fiscally independent government for a while and see how that works for Texas.

If I remember American history correctly, Texas was part of the South during the civil war and was subdued by the North, preserving the Union. Since losing that battle to secede, we shall always be subject to the U.S. Constitution regardless of what our intellectually challenged governor says. We are Americans first and always.

Texas is only a region in this great country which, unfortunately for the Nation, has recently produced some of the most stupid politicians imaginable. I suggest DHS begin a surveillance of the governor and his cronies.

Just when I thought that I could no longer be surprised by any irrational rhetoric coming from right wing fanatics, I find myself flabbergasted that the sitting governor of a state would make statements like this. Unbelievable.

This is demagoguery at its finest - whipping up a frenzy of "us versus them" for his own political gain - and at a time when it has never been more critical that we unite to solve the critical problems facing this nation. And this is the sort of politician who will wrap himself in the flag and profess his patriotism. What hypocrisy. In my opinion, he is lower than dirt.

The phrase good riddance to bad rubbish comes to mind. Also, wouldn't it be deliciously ironic if Texas secedes for the United States to build a WALL around the state to keep out those filthy, un-American immigrants? As an added bonus, with Texas out of the picture, it makes the prospect of a future republican President highly unlikely. Finally, this talk of seceding from the union sounds a lot like sedition, methinks the Governor of Texas might be a terrorist, get out the water board, time to see what he knows.

It's mostly White, Black and Mexican, but we also have large pockets of Chinese, Japanese, Korean, African so on and so forth. We have the best food. You can find anything you want here, I LOVE IT! I also love the state of Texas. It's big, it's beautiful, IT'S HOT!!...it's big. I have also found the people here to be patriotic. We fly the flag of the US and our state flag everywhere we can. The good people in the sate of Texas love the United States Of America...LOVE IT!!! I am so ashamed of Gov. Rick Perry. Does he forget about the sons and duaghters of Texas fight for this great nation?!? Or the fact that the last president came from this state? (some of us are really sorry about that) Or the fact that 2 former Presidents reside in this state? The Republican party is no longer the party of Abraham Lincoln. The Republican party left Lincoln in the 1960's when it's heroes ,Goldwater and Reagan, oppossed all of the Civil Rights Bills, and claimed it was a State's Right to segregate the races. Now, the Republicans have completely become the Party of Jefferson Davis with all this talk of Secession. I will take Abraham Lincoln over Jefferson Davis any day of the year. Lincoln must be rolling over in his grave. The Republican Party has become the Party of Secession from Alaska to Texas. It is sad to see what the Republican Party has become in this year that we celebrate Lincoln's 200th birthday.

The problem with the governor's statement is that he too, as other repblicans, do not understand or acknowledge that the country has changed. Gov. The threat of taking your ball and going home...maybe even starting another team, if you do not let me play, is kid's play that you learn before reaching adolescence.

President-elect Obama has been in office less than 100 days and, yet, the tea party partisans are blaming him for everything that happened over the last eight miserable and contentious years of the failed Cheney/Bush administration.

Suggest you all give President Obama at least a year or two before you start nailing him. Obviously, the Republicans and racists of this country cannot wait this long. What is the matter with you people?

Remember, the majority of us citizens elected this man and that should tell you something. Live with the decision and give President Obama a break just like you all did with Cheney/Bush for eight years..

These people are traitors. Personally, I think they should secede. We can pull Nasa out....we won't have to make social security payments to the state. They would have to deal with the border problem. Problem is, it would become just another thug state like Iran, Syria or North Korea. In many ways, it wouldn't be worth fighting them. However; the south tried to leave the union once before and as a country we made it plain that was unacceptable. Actually, it sounds like the governor of Texas and many of its citizens have something in common with Al Queda. They don't like the United States and they want to overthrow it. It wouldn't surprise me if the Texas governor would team up with Al Queda and other Right Wing Neo Nazi Americans and try to secede. Rather ironic. Yes, political leaders like the Governor of Texas, and the Governor of Alaska (who once was a member of a party supporting secession) are traitors and should be in prison with people who think like them...at Guantanamo.

Texas v. White, 74 U.S. 700 (1869) was argued before the United States Supreme Court in 1869. The Court held in a 5–3 decision that the Constitution did not permit states to secede from the United States, and that the ordinances of secession, and all the acts of the legislatures within seceding states intended to give effect to such ordinances, were "absolutely null".
    ***************************************************************************

In the constitution you can "revolt" against government, but you can't secede...Hamilton (one of the fathers of the constitution) argued this point consistantly.

This man should be impeached. Secession? What is this the 1850s? The fact that Texans want this man speaking for them is embarrassing for them.

Idiots! Go get your own island. I am not leaving Texas and I am a citizen of the USA! Texas has control over our property tax which are sky high. The DART rail line is raising prices again and it is a state issue and you are complaining about the federal tax. Get a grip all you psychos that are for this you are going to have a bigger fight on your hands than you expect and nothing brings down a nation faster than INFIGHTING! Look at the republican party.

I think it is simply idiotic to say that a state will secede from the union. It is illegal and all those responsible will be sent to jail. Not to mention, I'm sure there would be a large amount of people in Texas who do not want to secede. This governor, like Palin, is an idiot who is just saying this to appease voters when his reelection is near.

In an escalation of outrageous rhetoric this one is the most irresponsible. However it's not surprising since some Republicans are hoping Obama/country fails. Sounds like treason.

How can the Republicans claim to be the party of fiscal responsibility only a few short months after racking up the largest deficits in history? I feel they are simply placing a political bet that Obama's policies are unable to quickly reverse the damage their party has done. They have no answers, no plans – only mindless criticism to inspire fear.

This is absurd. Talking about rebellion, revolution, and secession because a political party lost a democratic election is not patriotic or in the spirit of freedom; its irresponsible and childish. Those who do not like the government's policies should vote in the next election, just like everyone else.

I beginning to feel that the GOP, which means Grand Old Party, key word old, is really out of touch. We have 8 years of hell and in four months you can talk secession.

    OK. Let them go.

Then we, the UNITED States of America can impose economic sanctions, freeze their assets deposted in USA backs, call all their "Treasury Backed Securities", impose travel restrictions over the USA's boarders, slap a trade embargo on them, triple importation tariffs, buy oil from other countries, take back all the infrastructure that the Federal Dollars have built including the miles and miles of "their" pipelines, move "our" military off their land, take back all the National Guard's arms, don't allow importations of any water, electric, or food, scramble our television and radio signals, don't buy any of their "rebel beef" and then, in about 10 years, we can stop by and see how they are doing in their little "dust bowl."

Sounds like fun! We should let them go!

After what that fake Texan just did to the country for eight years, why don't we throw Texas out of the union? Isn't Perry's ludicrous speech treason? The right wing has destroyed the industrial base of the country, trashed the country's standing in the world and is still fighting battles ended 144 years ago. Perry wants to run for president – of a country he wants to succeed from. At least Jefferson Davis was clear what he wanted to be president of. A dangerous clown.

The racist cast of the 'tea bag parties' was tame compared to this garbage.

Secession won't be necessary. That said, I do not understand killing a bunch of people to force them to stay in the U.S. The bigger issue is how Texas would handle Texans who DIDN'T want to secede.

I am a Texan, I love Texas. But if anyone was thumbing their nose at the American people it was the Bush administration. They started a senseless and costly war which has taken thousands of lives and curbed of our rights and freedoms. No one cared, it was other people's children but now that it is time for each of us to pay our fair share they start talking about secession.

If Texas does not secede their will be another civil war. I might consider myself a Texan but I am an American first and I would rather die than see this Union be dissolved.

Shame on on you Governor Perry. Independence is one thing, selfishness is another.

It is completely unprofessional and improper for the governor of a state to embrace the possibility of seceding. Perhaps Gov. Perry should tell the people of Texas how he plans to make up for the loss of Federal funds his state receives from the United States of America. Is he going to open the borders or will Texas also increase spending on border patrol/security? The list goes on. Wake up and smell the tea you are dumping Texas.

I'd Love to see them do that, then we could treat them like a Third-World Country that they would become.
Texans would need a visa to come to America.
They would become just like another Caribbean fail State country.
    No foreign aid for Texas
Used border patrol to keep them from coming to the the rich States.
America would actually be able to fix it's debt problem if we got rid of some of those loser States, the rich States are already Blue States so we will then have harmony.

Let them secede! They think they have a heavy tax burden now, let them see how much it will cost them to deal with the Mexican Drug War alone and the influx of illegal aliens!

This "Tea Party" is Storm in a Teapot! If the average american wants a significant tax break shut down off shore tax havens. A minimum, 40-45,000 US citizens hide approximate 100 billion in assets each year. This would be equivalent to a $725.00 rebate to the average taxpayer, if these tax evaders paid their fair share. These evaders want the freedom to make their wealth provided under the US Capitalistic system yet don't want to pay for it. What an insult to the US Soldiers who fight and die to defend this country!!!!! Shutdown these tax havens!!!1

I suppose mentioning the sacrifices made during the American Civil War would be a waste of time at this point.

Since Texas Leadership expresses an obvious disdain for the UNITED STATES, since they seemingly welcome a huge influx of illegal immigrants anyway, and since they have a huge amount of weapon carrying miliita to police and defend themselves – I say good-bye Lone Star state .

As a young man I had a “Secede” bumper sticker on my car as a sort of political joke, but now the Governor and the state legislature are the political jokes. The treaty that admitted Texas to the union allowed it to divide into five states when the population was large enough. That might be the better way to go. Then the state of Central Texas centered on Austin could have a legislature and governor that lives in the 21st century instead of the 29th; however, the country might not accept a senate with 10 senators from Texas.

Rick continues his arrogance and ignarance with this foolish talk of succession. Go ahead and do it ! Then in a very short period of time, idiots like Perry and Norris will see this place become part of Mexico's northern expansion re-named to "Texas, Mexico" !

So, basically what Mr. Perry is saying (I won't call him Governor because a real leader wouldn't bring up secession), is that unless the United States is run exclusively by the Republican Party, then the United States should be dissolved?

Obviously, you didn't scream too loudly about NASA being headquartered in your state. Or all the defense contracts your state was awarded. Or all the military bases. I suppose you wouldn't mind simply having all those little goodies taken away from you, huh.

Good. Let them leave. Take the Bush family and Chuck Norris with you. These "Texans" have already done enough damage to our country and to the acting profession. Any intelligent and loyal Americans that live in Texas and disagree with these yahoos – come on up to Ohio....we've got room for ya.

If there's any merit in Texas' secession, it's dashed by the possibility of Chuck Norris as president. Norris, like any Washington politico, needs to smell the roses, leave his studio digs and consider the world of public opinion out there. Walker, Texas Rangers, bears no resemblance to anybody anywhere. Maybe Chuckie could team up with Stephen Colbert for a reality series. You know, something to else to speed up channel surfing...

Texas reminds me of a petulant, overpaid athlete who threatens to sit out unless he gets what he wants. If I were the Pres/owner, I would send Texas, Roger Clemens and Sarah Palin to Mexico for a few goal scoring soccer players and a commitment to cut down on drug trafficking. We can pick up Cuba or PR to replace Texas so that we don't have to change the flag.

Rick Perry is a used car salesman and a tool of a politician. Being a Texan, having the right to secede has always been a point of pride, but not reality. We think of ourselves as independent thinkers and proud of being Texans and Americans.

I can say one thing about Texas secession, my vote would be for Kinky Friedman and not Rick Perry or Chuck (Oklahoma, really?) Norris for President.

While our President is hard at work trying to fix the economic problems that the GOP is largely responsible for, while our President is busy dealing with the unnecessary war that the GOP brought us, and while our President is busy re-gaining the respect our country had before the Bush administration lost it, what is the GOP doing? Stupid stuff like tea parties and talk of sucession. Nothing to help. No ideas. They should be embarrassed by their complete inability to contribute anything productive.

Well, if they really want to secede lets not stand in their way. Hope they return all the stimulus money and will be able to take care of the Mexican border on their own. Gosh, guess they'll have to raise taxes in Texas to take care of all that. Oh, I forgot the about the money they'll lose if their residents no longer get Social Security or Medicare. Oops.

    Its treason, plain and simple.

The costliest war in our history was over secession and states' rights. I would have thought the blood of 600,000 American that soaked the ground at Shiloh, Gettysburg and countless other places would have been enough of a lesson, but apparently its not.

This is truly one of the most unintelligent things that i have heard in a long time. I agree with him that in recent years that the government has become overpowered and is using that power to in-act laws that some may not take as a step in the right direction. However there are may other ways to go about fixing these problems. Yes you could say that as a republican governor he will have no chance in talks with congress, but there are ways around that. If he tried to discuss this with the smaller local governments he could get the support he needs to make a change. There is no reason to threaten the country with succession. All this will do is start a fire that could just propitiate the downward spiral that our country is already in.

What I find funny about this is people threating to scede from the United States without consider the natural import/export taxes that could result between Texas an other counties. Texas, like all states, has companys and small business that depend just as much on the free interstate trade as they suffer from high taxes. In short the devil is in the details

Wake up America! Obama is not the devil. How did we come to this, that barely four months into his presidency some red states are considering secession? What happened? The economic meltdown began before the fall elections; the budget dificit was already high before January 20; nothing has changed since Obama became president. So what is going on? Some white Americans cannot stand the fact that a black person is president? This hurts.

There have been few instances when states have threatened to secede (e.g. during the war of 1812, shortly before the battle of New Orleans; also in the winter of 1850) and only one time that they actually did. How did that end for this country? How stupid can Rick Perry be? Did he go to school at all, and did he take any history classes? If not, then I want to re-educate him!

Just wondering....should Texas secede, will they give up all Federal Funding for highways, education, healthcare, transportation, highways repair/maintenance, Homeland Security (border guards), national parks, etc? Will they give up all rights to Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid? Will they give up all rights to protection by US military and rely soley on their own? Remember Mexico does border Texas. Will they establish their own currency and forego FDIC protection as well as SEC? I wonder have they really thought out secession and all that goes with it? Texas currently has no state income tax. Should they secede, I wonder, what will their state income tax be?

Good, then the US can put a fence up around Texas – to keep the illegal aliens (Texans) out of the US!

Since you will no longer be considered citizens of the USA, all Texans will need a passport and visa then pay hefty tolls to get across the border to enter our country – (the USA.)

If you work in or want to visit our Country (the USA), We will allow you to apply for a work permit, get photographed and finger printed, after which we will review your application to ensure you aren't a threat to our National Security then, perhaps we will issue you a limited work permit and ALLOW you to visit our country (the USA) – as long as we know where you are at all times After all, why should we treat your "new country" any differently than Mexico or Canada?.

BTW – You can deal with Mexico on your own, as it will then be your neighbor and your problem – not ours.
