From

(CNN) – Mitt Romney went on the offensive Tuesday, slamming President Obama's foreign policy initiatives and calling the president a "timid advocate of freedom."

In an op-ed in the National Review, the former Massachusetts governor accused Obama of going easy on dictators and passing blame for the actions and policies of former administrations.

"As American soldiers sacrificed blood in Afghanistan and Iraq to defend liberty, President Obama shrank from defending liberty here in the Americas," Romney wrote. "Vice President Biden was right that the new president would be tested early in his administration. What the world learned was not good news for freedom and democracy. The leader of the free world has been a timid advocate of freedom at best. And bold action to blunt the advances of tyrants has been wholly lacking."

The former candidate for the 2008 Republican presidential nomination said Obama may have failed in his early foreign-policy tests, but that he hopes the president will offer more than "silence, smiles, and a handshake" when dealing with foreign nations and leaders in the future.

"We are still very early in the Obama years – the president will have ample opportunity to defend America and freedom, and to deter nuclear brinkmanship. I am hoping for change," he wrote.

No seriously....President Obama shook a man's hand. Ohhhhh the world as we know will end now!!! He made no deals with Mr. Chavez, he merely shook his hand. George Bush look into Mr. Putin's eyes and saw a friend!!! OOOOOOPSIE. The GOP needs to get over themselves. Do you think that FDR actually LIKED Stalin?? You don't have to like people to deal with them and Mitt Romney knows this full well. I expect that in his business dealings he's shaken hands with more than a few people he didn't like or respect. He is simply stirring the pot and it's getting really old to have the GOP do that.....

Melani   April 21st, 2009 12:45 pm ET

Mitt

Please be quiet – say as little as possible when you do talk – you will never be voted in as President. Choose Palin as a running mate if you do decide to run, we need more good SNL spoofs.

john   April 21st, 2009 12:45 pm ET

You people just don't get it obama is incompetent, he is lost and all he knows how to do is campaign. He is the worst president since woodrow wilson he makes carter look good. No barry is the laughing stock of the rest of the world, these two bit dictators are playing him like a cheap violin.

Anonymous   April 21st, 2009 12:44 pm ET

What does Mitt know about foreign policy, he can't even win an election on domestic issues...

Kay   April 21st, 2009 12:44 pm ET

Romney's views on foreign policy are as wrong as the former administration – they got it wrong over and over again and might without common sense is not the answer.

obama/mama   April 21st, 2009 12:44 pm ET

Republicans are irrelevant.....Are they going to criticize Obama for 8 yrs...

Jim from Canada   April 21st, 2009 12:44 pm ET

I cannot believe Mitt and Dick....but what else can we expect from two guys with first names as such.
Meaghan McCain is absolutely correct....a civil war is looming in the GOP...and it is exactly what it needs. The inmates need to be locked up, jacketed and gagged if the party it to move forward and evolve.
Ms McCain ? If I were American I would vote for her, she has guts.

brian   April 21st, 2009 12:43 pm ET

Going easy on dictators huh? What about our cozy relationship with the Saudi Royal Family and the Chinese? Oh yea I forgot they have money to buy a ton of our treasure bonds to keep us a float so they are ok. I'm sick of hypocrites!

Moe NY   April 21st, 2009 12:43 pm ET

President Obama has not failed foreign policy tests. Just bacuase President Obama uses diplomacy instead of fear tactics and arrogance towards other countries, the Republicans cannot understand his policies. Yes Mr. Romney, American soldiers have sacrificed their lives and blood in Afghan and Iraq, and their blood is on the hands of the prior Republican administration...and we all know it! If the US had gone into Afghan and took care of business instead of starting an illegal war, much of this could have been avoided. There is nothing timid about President Obama, if push comes to shove I would want President Obama on my side. I suggest that you Mr. Romney and the rest of your republican/conservative cronies sit back and accept the fact that our President is bringing change to our country, perhaps not the change you and your cronies want, (if, indeed you really want change at all) but change the American people are eagerly lookin forward to with open arms. I have come to the conclusion that Republicans/Conservatives are just plain nasty people, who favor fear tactics and hate and lies.

Pam   April 21st, 2009 12:43 pm ET

Ummm...Romney didn't even make it out of the primaries. Who gives a rat's behind what he thinks?

Kelly   April 21st, 2009 12:43 pm ET

Simply amazing at the way these parttime racist do business. The whole pack of bush, cheney, rumsfield, ashcroft (who lost an election to a dead man) rove, libby (comitted treason) palin, limbraugh, romney and others will be very quick to critize someone who is trying to restore credibility and superior power of the US around the globe. If the someone would dare to critize them, they will immediately run to Fox news and demand an apology, and call you UnAmerican for critizing them.

I agree with Kim in the statement of Go Away, but this will not happen for the next 4 years.

Dee Dee   April 21st, 2009 12:42 pm ET

Lets put this in middle class terms here....

Your kids go around terrorizing the neighborhood so much so the neighbors detest you. you send them away to boarding school so now in order to get into good standing (and be able to use tools) you apologize to the neighbors you have inconvenienced. That is essentially what Obama is doing. He is undoing what Bush and Cheney did in their tenure. America is by no means weak...and to those people saying that....you have too much pride...and won't admit when you are wrong...that will hurt you. Let the President do his job.....and Shut Up! We need them just as much as they need us...its called globalization.

Jim   April 21st, 2009 12:42 pm ET

Warhawks don't make any money in times of peace.
But let's ask the losing party what they think of our new president.
What a joke...
This like asking Burger King what they think of MacDonalds.

Steve   April 21st, 2009 12:42 pm ET

I think Mitt and Newt and the rest of the GOP should just keep on talking. At every turn they show themselves to be out of step with what this country has said, through the ballot box, it wants. The GOP's road to irrelevance is paved in slime and shrouded in fog.

bv   April 21st, 2009 12:42 pm ET

So long as Mitt is talking and running, Obama wins! Obama 2012!

come on   April 21st, 2009 12:41 pm ET

Romney and so many others expect Obama to fix everything wrong with America in such a short amount of time. He hasn't even been in for 100 days, give him a break. Like he said in his speech when he won the election, It's going to take some time.

TJ   April 21st, 2009 12:41 pm ET

This country has been without a real leader for so long, that apparently many have forgotten, or never knew, what one acts like. Obama is a real leader. Watch, and learn.

RRR   April 21st, 2009 12:41 pm ET

Again...for eight years Democrats in government were told to be quiet and not criticize the President or THEY were Un-American.

Evidently Republicans think it's OK to not follow the same rules they insisted be followed for eight years. Mitt Romney is the latest hypocrite to attack a sitting President on public, in the press.

My opinion: Republicans are doing more to damage our domestic security by their second guessing than any of President Obama's actions. SHAME on Romney and Cheney.........what jealous backbiters.

biyer   April 21st, 2009 12:41 pm ET

Mr. Romney,
Shut up! You are not in the shoes of President Obama. What does he suppose to do? Follow republican's policy of killing people, waging war and be arrogant... You guys have made enough damage in this World...now it's time for you to shut up and go away...let him run for sometime andd see what happen.

MADMAM-VA   April 21st, 2009 12:40 pm ET

can you say... Obama will shake Mitt's hand in 2012 , smile in his face and then whip his behind and be POTUS again in 2012!

Please Mitt you are soooo not in touch@!

T Mckinley   April 21st, 2009 12:40 pm ET

Mitt Romney's definition of freedom:

Freedom from unions and union workers making a wage they can actually live on, freedom from a strong middle-class, and freedom for greedy corporate executives to make as much money as they want.

Mitt Romney's foreign policy:

Befriend world leaders who agree wilth this definition of freedom, and villianize world leaders who don't.

Steph   April 21st, 2009 12:40 pm ET

My thoughts combine Misty and Kim's comments. "Oh! Shut up! Enough. Go away..........!"

Chi Town   April 21st, 2009 12:40 pm ET

Mitt...

The world looks at Obama as weak... no doubt about that.

But you aren't the guy to be saying that... it comes out as a campaign bid... so carries no weight.

Fair Dem   April 21st, 2009 12:40 pm ET

This is fascinating, watching the Republicans march into the sea. Do they get that they are rendering themselves irrelevant?

I voted for McCain, but Obama is now my president. In fact, he seems to be everybody's president except Republican politicians and conservative talking heads.

HEY, Reps and Cons, do you get that we want to improve the image of American that YOUR president destroyed, and Obama is doing our business, and we don't care if that annoys you?

Larry   April 21st, 2009 12:40 pm ET

Mitt Wrongney is wrong again.

Derrick   April 21st, 2009 12:40 pm ET

Romney is making a bid for 2012. All the repubs can do is criticize...nothing of substance to add therefore Mitt, Cheney, Palin, Newt and all others should go away and hide under a rock

mme   April 21st, 2009 12:40 pm ET

There's an obvious reason why you’re a former Governor and Republican presidential nominee you know absolutely nothing about governing or diplomacy. Republican’s sound like dictators, do they honestly believe that America needs to lead through intimidation, fear and arrogance, how ignorant…

richard   April 21st, 2009 12:40 pm ET

I missed the part where Mitt discusses the failed policies of the past, the erosion of support from even our closest allies and how talking softly, and carrying a big stick, often works. I'm so disgusted with Republicans right now that all I hear is belly aching, but no solutions.

C W   April 21st, 2009 12:40 pm ET

The Republicans had 8 years and utterly failed in their economic, foreign and domestic policies.

They left us the mess of financial crisis, a more unstable world (chaos in Iraq and Afghanistan, North Korea saber-rattling and no coalition of international partners) and a divided populace (a result of their strategies of fear-mongering and juvenile name-calling).

Now, after all that failure, they want President Obama to fail.

The only conclusion that can be reached is the GOP is anti-American, and a huge threat to our nation's security and prosperity. This has been unequivocally proven by their actions.

IDU   April 21st, 2009 12:40 pm ET

The problem with conservatives today is when they worship ronald reagan they forget how creative he was. Would the soviet union fall if he didnt engage with them at all or insulted the Soviet Leader Gorbachev. If any nation today is keeping united states afloat today it would be the chinese. Nixon was CREATIVE in his approach to china and now they are our biggest creditor. Cursing our enemies outright after meeting for the first time, i don't think it is leadership or wise in anyway.

Drew   April 21st, 2009 12:39 pm ET

Mitt Romney should not say much about anything! He has zero personality and an ego that is way beyond more than he is worth.

As far as Cheney, well the United States does not have to look like a bully, act like or bully or talk like a bullyl, to be seen as strong. President Obama, I believe, is setting the stage for a United States that will listen, work with and establish our country as one that is United with other countries in creating peace. We have needed a president like President Obama for years. The last eight years was destructive. We became the country that bullied. We don't need that image. We need to be united and we need to always keep our friends close and our enemies even closer.

Dennis   April 21st, 2009 12:39 pm ET

I agree completly with what Gov. Romney said. I am not a Romney fan but he is right about this. I have set back and watched Obama play nice with the dictators of the world and it makes me sick. As an independent voter, I and millions like me, will remember the actions Obama has taken these past few weeks and not give him our vote again. He has weakened our country in the eyes of the world, I just hope that he will see what he is doing soon and change before it is too late.

That's right, we should go back to condecension and intimidation. It worked so well in the past. Have a nice day!

Larry of Washington DC   April 21st, 2009 12:38 pm ET

It is totally predictable that the very people who elected Obama would come on here and defend him, and trash anyone who dared to speak up and challenge Mr Obama's policies – like the 1st amendment did not exist, or perhaps we are now a one party governmen?. I do not think so

I am referring to the Obamabots – those largely uninformed, uneductaed, entitlement seeking radical liberals who would sacrifice the county for a few dollars. It is truly pathetic to see.

Mitt Roomney had it right. VP Dick Cheney had it right. And most informed conservative Americans who love this country dearly and who would fight to protect it, have it right. Obama is a loose cannon, an inexperienced junior senator, and a very dangerous leader for the US right now.

Ken   April 21st, 2009 12:38 pm ET

Thanks Mitt, and all you fellow supporters of rightwing dogma. Now I'm CERTAIN that Obama is on the right track! If proven neo-idiots like you are against it, it must be the correct way to go.

Ray   April 21st, 2009 12:38 pm ET

I guess shaking his hand and opening some dialog with them is not good enough for Romney. Maybe the President should have said nothing and ignored the tyrant. Oh, my bad. We've done that already and it didn't work.

George Watson   April 21st, 2009 12:38 pm ET

PS Was Mitt ever in the army?

Brent   April 21st, 2009 12:38 pm ET

Apparently Mr. Romney thinks that one has to be belligerent and aggressive in order to be an effective leader and advocate of freedom. I, for one, believe that Mr. Romney's view is myopic and unrealistic.

A good, effective leader works towards solutions to problems. there is no reason to start off being antagonistic when trying to resolve problems. It tends to entrench people in their positions, as was shown by Bush's belligerent, yet wholly ineffective, "leadership."

Certainly Mr. Romney believes that a different tactic should be used. Maybe that's why he's not the President.

Dissent is American; but to so only to show up the President with no real logical basis is partisan. That is all Rommey and Cheney are doing. They see the polls the Dems are fading and attacking. This has nothing with America, and everything to with the GOP. Typical of them.

Robert J   April 21st, 2009 12:37 pm ET

I disagree with Romney. I am very happy with what Obama has done. He has raised our stature around the world without a doubt.

I once considered voting for Romney as he seemed like he was very reasonable. I am very disappointed he has now decided to join the chorus of know-nothings that only served to degrade our status abroad.

Ok – Herman "Mitt" Munster ... where is Cousin IT – "Palin"

It is amazing how different these guys see Strength.
Unlike Bush who looked in Putin eyes and saw a kindred soul... later to be duped, Obama in ultimate Boxer Style – Shook his opponents hand to basically say...look I am not scared of you man... nor will I run from a room that you are in.... I can look you in the eyes shake and your hand...but know this, it's on if you step wrong.

Bush ran from personal interactions with our enemies and hid behind the American Image... where as Obama is willing to face them head on in person as a representative of the American Image and I am sure if necessary on the battlefields!

One of the greatest moves a fighter can do is look in his opponents face.... and not hide behind his last championship belt. Sometimes you just have to let people know that not only is my country not a punk... neither am I!

It disgusts me very much on how many people are trying to slam our current President. President Obama is showing and using his diplomatic skills, in a way that seems very positive. Many of the ways of yesteryear have not and will not work today. America needs to realize how arrogant we sound at times. Then we have the audacity to wonder why some countries feel the way the do about us. Don't people understand that being nice and acting civil is a powerful weapon within itself when facing the adversary?

Tom   April 21st, 2009 12:36 pm ET

Simply saying NO doesn't make it so! Romney could have also said that the sun will not appear tomorrow morning or that pizza is no longer a satisfying meal but tell that to the population and be ruefully mocked! The trouble is with the GOP is that this president is mightily popular and breaking into comments meant to bring down such popularity is like spitting into the wind. Much comes back into the face of the person. Romney has many difficulties here because where does one begin to fling insults when one doesn't have much of a grounding to say much of anything. GOP falters once again!

John Kusters   April 21st, 2009 12:35 pm ET

Mitt's only upset because Obama is deciding to end a foreign policy that makes schoolyard bullies look timid. Mitt and his ilk seem to think that strength is only found in domination and braggadocio, whereas others find strength in mutually beneficial partnerships. I think we'll find that the latter policy is much more profitable, and will forge longer lasting peace.

CriticalThinker   April 21st, 2009 12:35 pm ET

Romney (2012?)...Just another 'hole with a smelly opinion trying to grab headlines. Is that all the GOP elite can produce? Hotti4BHO   April 21st, 2009 12:26 pm ET

You will never walk in his shoes and this is why you ain't prezident

And this is why Romney isnt president. Posturing for 2012. Blood shed in Iraq is due to the war the GOP pushed on the American people full of lies..........Blame your party Romney. I am very impressed with Obamas foreign policy.

Dan, TX   April 21st, 2009 12:26 pm ET

I disagree with Mr. Romney's assessment and I am quite confident my opinion is as expert as his.

dblzap   April 21st, 2009 12:26 pm ET

The Mitt is an IDIOT

He and the rest of the GOP are committing acts of treason when they undercut the current adminstrations efforts to un-do the damage they have caused since Regan!

These morons will do anything, even start another war, just to get back in power!

chelseafran   April 21st, 2009 12:26 pm ET

Oh please! Do you people ever say anything that's not negative and/or badmouthing the president.?

It's beyond old.

Lisa   April 21st, 2009 12:25 pm ET

And you sir, failed your early entry into national politics. Your point?

eric in texas   April 21st, 2009 12:25 pm ET

Announce you are ending the war in Iraq even though you are using the timertable established by the Bush administration (but don't give credit there)–check

Send money to overseas banks from American taxpayers–check.

Yeah, great job....change.....you want it, you got it.

Marydoe   April 21st, 2009 12:25 pm ET

Who the heck cares what Mitt Romney thinks? I mean seriously, how is he in any position to sit on the sidelines and throw stones?

eric in texas   April 21st, 2009 12:24 pm ET

Let's see, early foreign policies:

Bow subservantly to the King of Saudi Arabia–check

Apologize on end for the previous administration instead of saying, they're out, I'm in, this is how I do business and get on with it–check

Undermine your intelligence agency–check

Announce you are ending the war in Iraq
