WASHINGTON (CNN) – Vice President Joe Biden said Wednesday that $300 million in stimulus money will be given to state and local governments to help expand the number of clean and sustainable vehicles in cities around the nation.
Biden said "every day is Earth Day" in announcing the Clean Cities Alternative Fuel and Advanced Technology Vehicles Pilot Program, which would help local governments and transportation authorities invest in clean vehicles and fund the fueling infrastructure to support them.
"From advanced battery cars to hybrid-electric city buses, we're going put Recovery Act dollars to work deploying cleaner, greener vehicles in cities and towns across the nation that will cut costs, reduce pollution and create the jobs that will drive our economic recovery," Biden said in a statement.
This funding is adding to $11 billion already allocated to the Department of Energy to boost local energy efficiency programs and weatherize low-income homes. To participate, local governments have to apply to the Clean Cities Program for funding, and they can receive money for a variety of hybrid vehicles and alternative fuels.
Biden made the announcement at the WMATA Carmen Turner Maintenance and Training Facility in Landover, Maryland.

I am certainly not against cleaner air. But I sure hope the actual drafting of real ideas and exact targets for this 300 million has been created. What we are still seeing under Obama is that this stimulus money may get wasted here and there as tax money often does. That being said, something as general or maybe even too broad like this shows our leaders are doing nothing to prevent wasted money. It almost seems like they picked another cause out of a hat and said, "yeah, let's spend some money on this issue just to look like we care about it". What can a city do to promote hybrid vehicles when it is still the major auto makers who are the ones building these cars?
It would be nice if this article or Mr. Biden could have provided expected monetary gains from this stimulus. For example, for this 300 million, how much polution is expected to be reduced or how many jobs can be created or how much electricity might be saved? When I was a kid, I used to buy a Coke in a glass bottle for 15 cents and when I was done, I'd get 5 cents back when I returned the bottle. The phrase became, "no deposit no return". I'd like to turn that around for a change in this stimulus, "No return, no deposit".
Good. Its about time. I'm glad that an administration has finally gotten off its duff and considered this seriously. If for no other reason than to stop our reliance on foreign oil that comes from countries we all find morally despicable. Its time OPEC got their butts kicked. Its time we all grew up.
Why do you republicans hate when President Obama spends money on getting America together? I know you guys long for the days when republicans only spent money on corporations and other countries (like the last 8 years) but you've got to spend money in America sometimes guys.

Any discussion of alternative fuel vehicles or even hybrid electrical ones will have to be tempered with where are you going to fill them up or plug them in? What about people like me who live in apartments and have no access to plug in their car? So are hybrids going to be relegated to home dwellers? With alternative fuels the first thing they need to do is set up a plan for spots to refuel. Nobody will buy an alternative fueled vehicle if there is nowhere of convenience to refill it after it leaves the showroom. It is wonderful to talk all you want about cars of the future but what do you do with them other than tout their efficiency? If you can't recharge or fill up after you get one, then no one is going to want one.
Here's an idea for the latest Communist propaganda issue known as "Earth Day", and it will truly be for a worthy cause:

Electric vehicle require electricity to rechrge them so we will create greenhouse gases at the power plant since wind and solor power are as reliable as our politicians to always do right. The hybrids like the Chevy Volt are good for in the city but you can only go up to 370 miles without recharging for the night with a new battery to travel any distance. In a work truck an electric or a hybride are insufficient in power to handle the load of real work. So this is another feel good form the left program.
With the economy going down the drain and they want to spend 300 million on clean air. Please I am all for clean air but right now clean air is doing no good because we are suffocating on our draining economy. Comeon put our money to more important things right now or give it to us and let us decide where we want our money to be spent!

People, why is it so wrong to spend money on your own country helping your own people? With all the money thats been spent in foreign countries, don't you think it would be good to spend some to fix the failing infrastructure of your own country? Some spend to fix the reliance on foreign countries oil?
