WASHINGTON (CNN) - The free people of the world must use the lessons of the Holocaust to confront evil, President Barack Obama said Thursday during the Holocaust Days of Remembrance ceremony at the U.S. Capitol.
"We know that evil has yet to run its course on Earth," Obama said, later adding, "May each of renew our resolve to do what must be done."
"We have the opportunity to make a habit of empathy, to recognize ourselves in each other, to commit ourselves to resisting injustice and intolerance and indifference in whatever forms they may take, whether confronting those who tell lies about history or doing everything we can to prevent and end atrocities like those that took place in Rwanda, those taking place in Darfur. That is my commitment as president, I hope that is yours as well."
Obama spoke at the annual remembrance of Nazi Germany's execution of approximately 6 million Jews during World War II. This year's theme for the commemoration established by Congress is "Never Again: What You Do Matters."

Funny that, democrats gutting the US military budget while Obama calls for a confrontation with evil. How progressive...
Stop talking and get to work, then, Mr.President. There is plenty of evil out there in the Middle East, an you are doing NOTHING.
The most evil person in this country now is the former vice president. Lets hope him and his gang will be punish for the torture they ordered.
Is anyone completely blown away by this man's hypocrisy???
Obama gives a rousing speech about confronting the "evils" in rememberance of the Holocaust.... yet wants to invite the new Hitler (Ahmadinejad) to tea?
Hamas has vowed to wipe Israel off the map. What does Obama do? Give Palestine (Hamas in control) $1 Billion.
The man is psychotic and you followers are worse than the Jim-Jones cult worshippers who forced their children to drink kool-aid.
How sensitive and kind of you sir. You show us every day why we made the best choice in electing you.
That's wonderful, we MUST NEVER FORGET!
Its the fascist mentality of the far-right-GOPers that concerns me the most. They keep spewing their lies, hate, fear and division, just like the Nazis did in Germany. Sadly, many people fall prey to the lies, of the likes of Hannity and Limbaugh to name a few.
That's how the Nazis gained power, they repeated their lies over and over and over until people started to believe them!
God help us IF America falls for the lies being told by the far-right-GOPers!
Great Guy , Great Ideas but one piece of advice ...
Don't get too close to Jews OR Islam – BOTH of them are dangerous!!
Islam – Largely illiterate and Ignorant ( LOT of educated folks STILL believe that Birth control is a sin and against the religion). Blinded by faith and could do ANYTHING (Murder people to achieve goals based on religious beliefs).
Jews – Very Smart people but very selfish and very aggressive in achieving their goals (truly silent killers, if you will)
This was pretty good article...and like days of old the story must be told and retold...it's lessons of history to remember not to do again..and to be warned of what is possible without insight.
This sounds like a warning to Iran.
I wonder what Obama's good buddy Ahmadinejad thinks about Obama calling him a liar?
It's also taking pace in Palestine
Well said Mr. President.
Confrontation of evil?!?! Obama's good at shaking hands with evil, but that's about it.
OH-OH here we go again,
I see were the mag. is going with the touch up. It simply makes OBama
look whiter. Nothing else seems to have changed.
It is shameful, wonder if any others can see the difference.
Whatever.... Democrats don't believe in evil, or right/wrong for that matter. They would rather think of terrorists as "freedom fighters" and go easy on them so that they're not uncomfortable. Idiotic if you ask me.
By the way Mr. President, is cozying up to KNOWN dictators like Chavez and apologizing for American "arrogance" the lesson you learned from the Holocaust? Go back through your history books, and you will see that warm smiles and friendly handshakes will NEVER stop the madmen of the world.
Well then the first thing he needs to do is confront his administration and the last one. And it can also go back to daddy Bush. They have all steered us to bigger, more dominant federal government and have plans that would seem to emulate the Third Reich.
I am happy to hear that the President says he is committed to ending the atrocities in Darfur. These people need help. Innocent men, women, children, and even babies are getting tortured and killed. Something needs to be done!
CNN's gone pretty heavy on civil rights and Holocaust stories lately.
Sure, the whole world was responsible for Rwanda and Darfur. Gotta prep the folk for the upcoming "humanitarian interventions."
Better to use the military for that than, say, patrolling our borders. Nice to know our priorities are straight.
You are great, Sir!
Okay, Mr. President,
Why don't you call out Ma-Mood Wheres-my-dinner-jacket out on the carpet?
Well said, now why did you not say that when you were in Turkey. They did the same thing to the Armenians and to this day act as if it never happened. This is just as bad as when Iran dose it with regard to the holocaust.
Confrontation of Evil? Great!!! Start with the Bush, Cheney and their Cabinet and work your way down!!!
Like former President Reagan, President Obama chose honesty over convenience when he repeatedly pledged to recognize the Armenian Genocide. As one of hundreds of thousands of Americans of Armenian descent, I know President Obama is including the Armenian Genocide when he refers to "confronting those who tell lies about history."
Being held back by fear of blackmail by the Turkish government is unfit for a country as great as the United States of America. Can anyone honestly imagine siding with Germany had it denied the Holocaust? Beacuse that is what Turkey is doing now – denying world history. Thankfully, historians and countries across the world are standing for what's right.
I pray that President Obama has the courage to continue to speak the truth about ALL cases of genocide.
I wish he would stop using the word "evil" to describe things. It reminds me too much of George Bush.
Obama neither honors holocaust victims nor confronts evil.
