From

(CNN) - Liz Cheney, former State Department official and daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, defended her father's string of tough comments aimed at President Obama, telling an interviewer that the former VP believes the new president is taking the nation down a "dangerous" path and that he has an "obligation to stand up."

"I think he is concerned that some of the things that we have seen President Obama do, particularly on his overseas trip in terms of not taking the opportunity to stand up and defend America when Daniel Ortega delivers a 50-minute screed against the United States [during the Summit of the Americas]," she told MSNBC in an interview that aired Thursday.

"I think that there's a real concern. I mean, the message that we saw coming out of the last few foreign trips - I mean, forget Republican and Democrat, as an American it concerns me when I have a president that doesn't stand up and say, 'Wait a minute, you know, I'm going to defend the United States of America because we are a beacon of hope for people all around the world,'" she said.

"The vice president thinks it's very important, when you see the country go down paths that are concerning and dangerous, and when you see the current administration making decisions that really do have the potential to make us less safe, in those circumstances I would say the vice president doesn't think there's an obligation to be silent - in fact, I think he believes the opposite, which is there's an obligation to stand up..." she said.

Former President Bush has said publicly that the new president deserves his silence. Cheney said her father had not sought the former president's approval for his recent comments. "He doesn't need permission," she said.

The former vice president has been increasingly vocal in his criticism of the new administration, telling CNN in an interview last month that Obama's decisions had put the country at greater risk of a terrorist attack.

"a beacon of hope for people all around the world"? Sorry Liz, you have to be delusional to believe that is true. Especially after your father and his cronies destroyed the reputation of America worldwide. Obama has to undo the damage done by your sinister dad.

Lynda/Minnesota   April 24th, 2009 10:29 am ET

No matter how often a "message" is repeated, or by whom, it is still a message going no where. Quite frankly, I quit worrying about bogey-men decades ago.

If you listen to her speak you know why Pres. Obama just takes it when other leaders air their grieves with the States.

Beacon of hope for all around the world. You have got to be kidding me.

If Hope means – weekly gun rampages
– poor health care system
– lopsided pay scale
– torturing prisoners

Take all these lovely issues with you to the world stage and strut around like a Peacock.
You will look like and Idiot. Sorry a Cheney.

Glenn Maosn   April 24th, 2009 10:16 am ET

What the Republicans do not understand is that after the past eight years a whole generation of people in their teens and twenties thoughout the world see America similarly to how a generation earlier had viewed the Soviet Union. A country to be feared and respected, but not admired, emulated, or one whom you would ever follow its leadership. Under the Bush administration's leadership we were heading down a path where we were going to be hated throughout the world. If a world crisis would ever occur, we would find ourselves alone . Just look at how the rest of world viewed American leadership at the beginning of this financial situation. Barack Obama is doing a very good job of trying to undo all the missteps of the previous administration and hopefully we regain our leadership role thoughout the world.

Gary   April 24th, 2009 10:16 am ET

Why don't we talk about the policies that Cheney and Bush put in place based on their views and ideology and the catastrophic results that came out of those policies. Why would anyone give these morons the air time CNN continually gives them? They've been proven to be wrong over and over. We might as well let the the guys who ran Enron tell us how we should install ethics in big business. There's got to be more news out there than to continually air the views of a mean old fool like Dick Cheney. Come on!!!!

Rick   April 24th, 2009 10:16 am ET

Can these idiots (Cheneys) please just go back into their hole in some undisclosed location. He was the worst VP ever, but that wasn't enough? Now he wants to make sure he is the worst ex-VP ever also? At least Bush has the decency to step aside when his turn is over and let the new guy try to do his job. Tradition dictates that this is how it should be. But Cheney is so egomaniacal and just pure evil that he thinks he is above everything, tradition, the law, everything. At this point, I really believe that he just keeps running his mouth to avoid prosecution for his crimes. He knows that if he is extremely vocal, it makes it look vindictive if the Obama administration eventually does decide to prosecute him for his crimes. Cheney, please just shut up, and go hunting somewhere, hopefully alone.

Fed Up in CO   April 24th, 2009 10:15 am ET

Would Liz and Dick just shut up and go back to Wyoming - why can't they just leave Barack alone at least for a while to clean up the incredible damage left by Cheney and Bush .... I am really tired of their ranting - and Rush ... this includes you as well

Andy   April 24th, 2009 10:15 am ET

Dick Cheney caused more harm to the reputation of the United States of America than any other individual in the last thirty years. Obviously his daughter has an interest in revising history. It's pretty clear that Cheney is trying to point fingers at everyone else in order to deflect attention from the role he played in promoting torture.

James   April 24th, 2009 10:15 am ET

Oh The irony! Liz Cheney's father did more damage to this country's stranding and strength than any other individual in the history of our democracy. Arrogance, posturing and mindless chest-thumping do not a sound foreign policy make. President Obama is only (wisely) mopping up the mess and rebuilding our standing around the world. Cheney may escape justice in this lifetime, but I wouldn't want his resume going into the next one. Haha good luck friend.

Brian   April 24th, 2009 10:15 am ET

The new president is trying to reestablish trust & respect in a world that no longer holds the United States as a moral leader. It will take awhile, but I admire his efforts.

Mike   April 24th, 2009 10:15 am ET

obama is a disgrace to the white house and deserves to be dressed down by everyone. Of course the liberal wing nut bed wetters who pee down their leg will always ignore his screw ups.

David in Houston   April 24th, 2009 10:14 am ET

"Taking the nation down a dangerous path", huh? Really, Liz... And where were you exactly when your father unilaterally attcked a country under false pretenses?

Did you not consider that a dangerous path? That's right...only when it fits your politics.

Do you honestly expect anyone to take you and your family seriously after the destruction your ilk brought to this country?

well...   April 24th, 2009 10:14 am ET

"The vice president thinks it's very important, when you see the country go down paths that are concerning and dangerous, and when you see the current administration making decisions that really do have the potential to make us less safe....."

OK... He is NOT the Vice President anymore. And Every time the Former Vice President Opens his mouth he is making our country less safe.

Please Defer all your opinions to the Current Administration that we Democratically ELECTED into office ~ Thanks

Kentucky   April 24th, 2009 10:14 am ET

Is it just me or are the Cheney's doing more now than they did while in office. It's funny how they always have something to say about Obama, but didn't have much to say about the crashing economy they caused. Dick, do us all a favor and shut up! The last time we listened to you, look what happened.

Michael   April 24th, 2009 10:14 am ET

Cheney shold be the last person to critisize Obama,
the last eight years were filled with nothing but transparency from the Bush Administration

taxicab   April 24th, 2009 10:14 am ET

....and that's exactly the kind of thinking that got us into this mess- Cheney and Bush never sat down to hear anyone else's opinions, making us Americans seem like the most arrogant people in the world. We've really heard enough from the Cheneys- Wish they would just go away!

MALI   April 24th, 2009 10:14 am ET

"Beacon of hope for people all around the world"???? She is in denial as is Dick. Please wake up. The last 8 years have tarnished the US image around the world and she still lives in the past.

Obama is doing an excellent job as is proven by the recent polls rating. No other US presiedent has had similar approval ratings. The only people critiszing Obama are either the party with no plans or the tv channel with the 'f' word.

Kim   April 24th, 2009 10:14 am ET

There is only one person who I want to hear from even less than Dick "I was the worst Vice President" Cheney and that is his daughter! Her opinion matters to absolutely no one and only proves that rotten apples don't fall far from the tree.

Sharon   April 24th, 2009 10:14 am ET

Dick Cheney :

Go back to sleep where you have been for the eight years your were in office. We never seen you do anything that was for the better of the country when you were in office. All you are remeberd for is shooting a gun in the wrong direction.

The only reason you are speaking know is because no one is calling to speak to you. You are a has been. Be like Bush keep your mouth shut.

dped   April 24th, 2009 10:13 am ET

Classic Cheney rhetoric—to pompously stand in the face of other nations and cultures and peoples and declare that we, the U.S., are the light of the world: nationalistic pride at its best. However, what relief for me, as an American, to see my President not have a superiority complex and be able to calmly and diplomatically wait out the rants of opposing “others” and, like a true man, look an opposing “other” in the eye and shake his hand without being carried away with anger and pride and instead of jumping up and knocking everything off the chessboard because we believe we do not need to play because everyone bows to us, we know that we must play and so we play with reason and calculation looking at what is best. This is what makes me proud to be a true American.

Laurie Joyce   April 24th, 2009 10:13 am ET

Doesn't "stand up" and defend America??? or doesn't stand up and defend the 8 years of Bush/Cheney/Rove decisions!!!!!????
HUGE DIFFERENCE !!!

Julie   April 24th, 2009 10:13 am ET

The best way to spread home around the world is to bully everyone into agreeing with you. Great strategy!

John   April 24th, 2009 10:12 am ET

We're watching history repeat itself and have returned to the era of appeasment politics. Photo ops with fascist dictators are not diplomacy and 'peace in our time' led to the deaths of millions of human beings.

Showing the world our soft, white underbelly will not make them love us. Already, the devious tyrant Castro is making Obama look like a fool. Prosecuting ourselves is not going to make them love us. Air mailing them classified material is not going to make them love us.

Get over it, our enemies don't and will never love us. DIck Cheney speaks truth to the evident power of the left wing government of the United States of America.

Joe   April 24th, 2009 10:12 am ET

Beacon of hope indeed...when it comes to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. But, considering that we've ass-raped country after country for years to promote our own selfish interests, isn't an apology (or at least an acknowledgment) warranted?

Bob   April 24th, 2009 10:12 am ET

Obviously Ms. Cheney didn't hear President Obama's remarks. He did say that now America has changed, and it is up to our neighbors in our hemisphere to follow suit. She just hears what she wants to hear.

Joe   April 24th, 2009 10:12 am ET

Obama is doing good and bad. It's the inexperience showing. Hopefuly, will get better. I don't think anyone is afraid of him, though...

Eugene1773   April 24th, 2009 10:12 am ET

It is sad to see Republicans inviting terrorists to attack America just to prove they were right about limiting American freedoms and abadoning the rule of law.

It is better to pitty them than to rave about their actions.

Joyce Becker   April 24th, 2009 10:12 am ET

Of course the Cheney's are going to stick together and support each other. As much as I didn't approve of President Bush and what he did, at least he has the decency of being quiet and leaving President Obama to his own devices, too bad the Cheney's don't have the same good sense. I am sure President Obama doesn't want or need their approval and certainly is not interested in their complaining, perhaps the Cheney's are hoping to get the GOP's attention, why I don't know.

Reggie   April 24th, 2009 10:12 am ET

Still more backwards thinking. No one sees America as a "beacon" anymore. thanks in large part to her freaking husband.

jim j   April 24th, 2009 10:12 am ET

Liz and her father are both probably unaware of the irony of their incessant criticisms of Obama. Such critics with the audacity to slam the previous president would have been labeled un-American traitors by the Bush/Cheney/Rove triumvirate that went after anyone who questioned their policies. If Liz wants to be a good daughter now, she ought to advise dear old dad to lie low, shut up, and try to avoid being tried for war crimes.

Scully   April 24th, 2009 10:12 am ET

Ms. Cheney is right.

This administration is missing the aggressiveness and rhetoric of its predecessor.

This confuses many Americans.

chris (hartford, ct)   April 24th, 2009 10:11 am ET

I think it's funny that Liz is the first person I've heard mention of Daniel Ortega's anti-US comments. By giving the guy press, you're just providing him a larger audience for his argument. Having the President of the United States personally respond to some crazy guy on a soapbox only makes people wonder if the crazy guy might actually have a point. Pretty sure Obama made the right move just ignoring him.

phoenix86   April 24th, 2009 10:11 am ET

Liz is absolutely right. Obamabots refuse to believe what the see and hear from their Fuhrer and respond the way you would expect from thuggish brutes.

Debbie   April 24th, 2009 10:11 am ET

Ok, so now Cheney's Daughter is trying to defend him. Talk about weak. And Cheney is concerned that Obama looks weak. The Cheney's aren't even relevant anymore. I'm not sure why the press is even reporting anything they say. Did the Cheney family not notice Dick's approval rating when he left office. The American public obviously don't have any respect for a lying, disgraced, discredited old has been. A former Vice President commenting on the current President is tacky and desperate. It's so obvious he's trying to save his rear end and sending a message to those Cheney supporters still in government to "Help Me". You should me running scared. The ugly truth about you and your gang is being exposed for all the world to see. As much as I don't want to see this country go through any more difficult times, you deserve to be tried in a court of law!

SM in MICHIGAN   April 24th, 2009 10:11 am ET

Well, the "beacon of hope" that we used to be was kind of dimmed by your father's actions, wouldn't you say? A country that uses terrorist methods of interrogation can hardly consider itself moral and just at the same time, except in the twisted Republican psyche.
Obama is admitting that we need to regain our standing, that we need to abide by our own and international laws. The "beacon of hope" will shine brightly again, but not until we deal with the atrocities of the Bush administration. I am proud of Obama.

Andi   April 24th, 2009 10:11 am ET

wow. and she is relevant, how?

I agree with Nick. When is the Cheney family going to apologize for lies, torture, scare tactics, more lies....The blood of thousands of young soldiers from North America lies in his hands. All he cared about was protecting Haliburton's interests

Paula Ann   April 24th, 2009 10:07 am ET

Time for the Cheney family to crawl back under their stone- the dangerous path that America is on is the one that her cynical, fear mongering old man marched us down for eight years. It's a new dawn.
Cheers.

Clint Davis   April 24th, 2009 10:06 am ET

The way Cheney and the rest of Bush's cronies "stood up" alienated the entire world. They need to keep their mouths shut and let Obama go about cleaning up their enormously damaging mess.

ray munholland   April 24th, 2009 10:06 am ET

liz, dick and all the other troglodytes that created the mess that obama has inherited should all go back down into their lairs and hyperventilate to anyone down there who cares to listen. the arrogance of these criminals (dick, donald, george, and their laughable legal scholars, but not liz as far as i know) is unfathomable! they know no shame.

Cathy   April 24th, 2009 10:06 am ET

The Cheneys don't have a leg to stand on in their opinions of Obama. America's image on the world stage was tarnished even more under the Bush-Cheney Administration, and Obama is simply rebuilding relationships and undoing the damage they left behind. I think Obama is doing a great job under extremely difficult circumstances. It hasn't even been 100 days yet and Republicans are so quick to judge and criticize! They need to shut their trap and evaluate their own role in this huge mess we're in.

Taxpayer   April 24th, 2009 10:06 am ET

Amazing.......we are seeing and hearing more from Cheney in the last 3 months than we saw or heard from him in 8 years. Maybe he should just crawl back under that rock he was hiding under and stay there. He can make room for his daughter too. He was part of the Bush administration, wasn't he? We really never saw him much then and we really don't need to see or hear from him now. He's worried about Obama not "defending" America. He and George didn't care much about America OR Americans for eight years now he feels "the need." TOO LITTLE TOO LATE !!!!!!!

DEM in HI   April 24th, 2009 10:06 am ET

This is crossing the line of just being mean-spirited. Personally, I think VP Cheney should have been impeached for what he did in office. He was absolutely the worst VP ever!!! If they want a full blown investigation that would be good, maybe we can finally get Bush under oath and talk about the Downey letters where he told Blair he did not need any evidence to go to war with Iraq in Jan 2003. Maybe Cheney will finally be put under oath and testify like he refused while he was in office.

Bush and Cheney were the worst Pres and VP ever and the GOP knows it. The GOP is so stupid to think the public is going to stand for this show. What they are doing is driving the public to want a strong third party because the GOP/DNC both don't get it. We do not need to break laws to win. If we did such a good job in getting info, how come the CIA destroyed the tapes and pictures of the interrogations. Yep, another cover-up and no one is being accountable. That is the problem right now in government, there has been no lesson learn from what Bush/Cheney have done in changing laws to prevent it from happening again. All we get are stories and lies from both parties. It is so sad that we have slipped down this slimy road because of the lack of leadership and conviction in both parties.

sally   April 24th, 2009 10:06 am ET

Are these people crazy, or just full of hate. President Obama would never put Americans or his own family at risk of terrorist attacks. He just doesn't have the same leadership style that they are used to. He is not a bully. The USA lost all respect thru out the World and it is going to take a lot to get it back. The President will not give away the store. There is a saying, "keep your friends close but keep your enemies even closer".

I feel that Cheney and the gang (not Bush) are putting us still at a greater risk of terrorist attack just by wishing it on the President. The Cheney GOP doesn't need to give the terrorist something to think about. When they wish these things on the President they are wishing them on them selves and the rest of the USA. I feel the GOP is making us less safe because of their lack of respect for "We the people" Not all the GOP, mind you. They really need to get it together for the the sake of our Country.

Brian   April 24th, 2009 10:05 am ET

I agree with the former vice president as I do his daughter. The new administration is playing games with our economy, our security and our future. President Obama has catered long enough to the left's agenda. Now it's time for him to grow a spine and become the PRESIDENT. Start making the tough decisions. Stand up and lead. More importantly, be held accountable by the so called fourth estate. When will the media and press stop carrying his water and start doing what they are so good at, asking the tough questions and expecting answers. Goodness, I have never witnessed such a love fest in my life!!!! It's time to stop swooning and get to work. Evil is not going to stop being evil just because we are nice and apologize!!! The economy is not going to recover by writing checks to supporters and our future is not going to be secured with silly and funny press conferences.

Monrob   April 24th, 2009 10:05 am ET

To The Cheney Family:

Please, we, the citizens of The United States, beg you to ride into the Wyoming sunset and just get lost. Eight years of you and Bush have destroyed this country and it seems you just have not had enough.

Sebstn   April 24th, 2009 10:05 am ET

Obama is trying to undo the negativity and irresponsibility towards the world that the previous administration was able to accomplish.

Mac Texas   April 24th, 2009 10:05 am ET

I think that the whole Cheney family should stay out of politics. Dick had his "day in the sun" for many, many years and most of the last 7 years he chose to hide out and control Geo. W. but let Geo. W. take the heat. Bush-Cheney did it their way, now Obama gets an opportunity to do it his. Regarding the fact that Obama listened to criticism does not make him a coward or an idiot............it gives him information on which to base future decisions regarding Ortega. I truly believe the first step toward understanding is to stop denying any past wrong and make changes in the future to correct our mistakes. One of the things we are not accustomed to is a President who listens first and acts later.

Anthony Vagnoni   April 24th, 2009 10:04 am ET

Someone please tell the Cheneys to shut up. They had their time, during which they made not just America but the world a more dangerous place. Time to let someone else lead. Funny how Cheney, who had NOTHING to say when he was Veep, now can't seem to keep quiet. Some egos just won't go quietly into that good night.

James C. Mitchell   April 24th, 2009 10:04 am ET

I would like to reply to Ms Chaney that we are only a beacon of hope when when we act from our values and don't throw them away – even when the situation is difficult. We also are only a beacon of hopewhen we act humbly and with humility – not arrogance. Ronald Reagan called the US "a shining city on the hill". When we act with the arrogance of the last administration, torturing, against our values, we sully that image.

President Obama went and listened and DID defend America. Go back and listen to his speaches in Europe. He impressed our allies.

Go and read "The Post-American World" by Fareed Zakaria, Ameican unilateralism works against our interests.

Is it me, or does it appear the only people who are "slamming" President Obama who were in the Bush Administration on this subject are Cheneys.Hey, Congress, while you are at it, why don't you look deeper into the Haliburton no-bid contracts? You know, the ones that included some of our brave soldiers being electricuted in substandard showers that where built by the Haliburton companies. If I were Cheney, I'd shut my face and go back under the rock he came from. I don't really think he wants to get into a spitting contest!

Jason   April 24th, 2009 10:03 am ET

It seems like the Cheneys are grieving the loss of public support for Dick's disastrous history in power. They've had to move past denial; now they're in the anger phase now, where all they can do is bash Obama. I tend to doubt they'll ever get to the final stage and accept how terrible they were as leaders.

Ad West   April 24th, 2009 10:03 am ET

Cheney knows his legacy will be looked upon by historians as a failure. The more documents that are dug up by the new administration regarding the treatment of detainees and how things were handled during the Bush administration are being brought to light. Cheney is scared of what's coming, and his self defense is to just lash out with fear-mongering statements that he can't back up.

Lynn   April 24th, 2009 10:03 am ET

As usual the Cheneys and their ilk leave out the positive things that President Obama said about America. CNN and the rest of the media keeps giving them a forum to spread their anger and attempt to varnish over the contempt the Bush Administration had for the rest of the world especially their allies.

The release of the memoes and the investigation by the Attorney General is to ensure that politicians are following the law and living up to the values that give people hope and to reclaim the country's claim to be the beacon on the hill.

R in Maine   April 24th, 2009 10:03 am ET

Does not sound like much of a "slam" to me, only an opinion on the Presidents failure to voice some kind of response to Daniel Ortega's fifty-minute ho-hum. Of course, maybe our President agrees with what Otega said...

rizopause   April 24th, 2009 10:03 am ET

This is outrage. If we beleive in the laws and the constitution governing our land, how is it ok for Dick / Bush and the crew get to do all the madness and then say it's ok.

Cheney's daughter should go find a spot in big daddy's pocket to hide because she is not making any sense. The whole bush administration is the most corrupt government. Dick is the most scary one because he does all his evil under cover. If he was that smart we wouldn't be here today with the bunch load of foolishness. How can one administration take down the entire globe. MADNESS

Phil   April 24th, 2009 10:02 am ET

Having a set of failed, and it looks more and more like criminal, policies won't become any more palatable if you hide behind your daughter's skirt!

Liz, do your dad a favor and help him go out to pasture.

Rev   April 24th, 2009 10:02 am ET

I find it interesting that Ms. Cheney supports a man (who happens to be her father) that has nothing but scorn for the gay community. Yet, she bashes the President who is looking to extend rights that would directly affect her. Is it me or is this a strange sense of logic? Despite this, she has forgotten the most fundamental part of being a 'beacon of hope' is to be true to your word. Not saying that you believe in freedom for all then turn around and use savage means all in the name of security. That's not what we are about as a people. We are better than that. Plus, sAs Ben Franklin once so eloquently put it: 'those who sacrifice freedom for the sake of security deserve neither.'

Ray   April 24th, 2009 10:02 am ET

Give me a break...Hasn't your daddly already done enough damage to our country? Now you are complaining because we have a president that is working to repair our country's image.

Really sad.

Diana Ramos   April 24th, 2009 10:02 am ET

Instead of the criticism to our president OBAMA, vp cheney and his family needs to be quite after all the mess they did to our beautiful nation. Our president is taking actions trying to regain the respect that USA deserves in Europe, Asia, Africa, Latinamerica and the rest of the world. Being polite is not a sign of being weak. Beign polite means being smart. USA doesn't has to humiliate others to prove that we are the most powerful country. The times of the cowboy era is past. The Guantanamo nightmare is history. Of course cheney needs permission from all the people of USA to comment about this issues because when he was vp he didn't have any solution to the problems of the USA and now his time is over and he like it or not we have the best president of USA since Clinton.

FreeNLovIt   April 24th, 2009 10:02 am ET

Patience, patience. ... He didnt have problem throwing Hillary under the bus, he's not going to throw extremists under a TRAIN. Chill out!

Why is it that the biggest hawks have NEVER seen the inside of a uniform? I have.

Andy   April 24th, 2009 10:01 am ET

Obama's approach to representing the USA is simply different than that of his predecessor. Obama deliberates and reflects before opening his mouth. It's not his style to shoot from the hip. Bush and Cheney did that for 8 years and had little success in doing so. I like the way Obama represents our country. He looks very strong by being intelligent and principled. We're safer now that we have a man in charge who will try to build bridges with the rest of the world, as opposed to blow them up.

AJ   April 24th, 2009 10:01 am ET

After 8 years in office, it is amazing to know that former VP Dick Cheney just realized that he can speak.

His silence over the past eight years did not help America in any way, shape, or form, and his daughter's tirade is not helping either.

Both father and daughter are just bitter and grumpy, which is why the apple never falls far from the tree.

richard miller   April 24th, 2009 10:01 am ET

Sorry Liz, but your daddy ought to be tried for his crimes against the state. Your father worked in secrecy during his years in government and because of that, the American people have lost many of their sacred rights from his snooping into their e-mails, through wiretaps and outright illegal activities. The man needs to be sent to jail.

Scott B   April 24th, 2009 10:01 am ET

what is this, the daughters of the GOP leaders making their voices heard. Dick can't get the attention so she sends out his daughter. Why don't we stop the slander and just let the man who WON the election govern his way. He tried to reach out to the right, and no takers. Then the GOP whines when they aren't included in budget talks. Didn't the GOP run the government the past 8 years, and into the ground most top economic leaders say. So why do they get to whine about not being included in anything. It's becuase they think they are intitled too. But they lost the past 2 elections for seats in the house and senate as well as the oval office. Suck it up for 8 yrs and see where Obama leads us. If I were a betting man I would say prospartity.

Jan Carter   April 24th, 2009 10:00 am ET

Honey your dad ran this country like it was the OLD WEST. We the PEOPLE are still suffering from the effects of it. Thanks to President Obama's willing to not only be right, but to DO right this country has made a u-turn and is now headed in the right direction. Your father commited crimes against not only the American public, but against other's simply because he could and thought he would get away with it.

Well, in the presence of light, darkness must flee. Your father's crimes are being brought to light and he shall be held accountable for them. So, start your baking now, because you will be going to visit him in prision soon.

Tired   April 24th, 2009 10:00 am ET

I'm so tired of the Cheney's disgusting rhetoric. We finally have a credible President who wants our country to be respected again after the Bush-Cheney years nearly destroyed us and they just don't go away. We can be friends with the rest of the world and we need to be. Hugo Chavez, of course, is nuts and I know President Obama is smart enough to know that but honestly when Chavez called former President Bush the devil, you have to admit alot of us in this country felt the same way. It seems like we keep getting more and more divided–mostly by the Republican party and it has to stop. The majority of this country has an unfavorable opinion of the Cheneys and I for one have great confidence in this President we have now. He handled himself beautifully in Europe as well as South American. He's a President we can be proud of!

Larry   April 24th, 2009 10:00 am ET

Obama doesn't get it. His naivete was on full display during the Summit (not to mention bowing to the Kind of SA). Does it endanger America to yuck it up with Chavez while accepting a Leftist propaganda treatise, or allow Ortega to berate the USA in silence? No, not in the short-term. But in the long, it sends a painfully clear message. One certainly not born of strength. Our teleprompter President, ladies and gentlemen....is a Wuss.

Rich Brown   April 24th, 2009 10:00 am ET

Would it be possible for the entire Cheney family to return to that infamous "undisclosed" location and then just SHUT UP ALREADY!!

Ray Fisher   April 24th, 2009 10:00 am ET

Cheney's like children are to be seen and not heard. Anyone not contributing helpful ideas need not apply to our recovery!!!

New Yorker   April 24th, 2009 10:00 am ET

Dick Cheney is a a war monger no better in any way than Saddam Hussein. He needs to be tried for his war crimes abroad as well as domestic. His daughter should be thankful that Obama didn't throw him in Jail yet as he should.

Juge   April 24th, 2009 10:00 am ET

I think you should have a lesson on reality. Nobody cares what you think or say. You don't know, or do not want to know what Cheney and his gang did to this country. Take your head out of the hole you have it in and look around. Gosh darn, the country is in a deeper hole than your head is in. We are trying to climb out and regain respect from our citizens and the global citizens. Shame on you for defending your father and probably living off the fat of the earth he took from the earth.

Dave   April 24th, 2009 10:00 am ET

Why dont these people crawl back under the rock from whence they came?

Nick   April 24th, 2009 10:00 am ET

I agree, Cheney does the have the obligation as a citizen to speak out when he disagrees with policy decisions. Perhaps he also has an obligation now to apologize for all the intimations that those of us who thought Bush-Cheney policies were making us less safe were unpatriotic.

And frankly, regarding Ms. Cheney's concern that Obama didn't respond to Ortega's "screed," do we really want to respond to every little slight? My father once told me there is value in knowing the difference between chicken salad and chicken s-, and Ortega's speech struck me as the latter. What does she want Obama to do, say "nu-uh!"

Joshua N.   April 24th, 2009 9:39 am ET

Wait, Obama's approval rating is some 60%, higher than George Bush's in his first 100 days, and people are still saying he shouldn't be president? I mean, yes he hasn't done anything huge except for trying to turn around the recession and putting troops into Afghanistan but right now I think he's doing alright. It's time for people to accept that he is our president and to stand behind him.

Doug From Southern Illinois   April 24th, 2009 9:39 am ET

The Bush/Cheney administration did lead us down a very dangerous path and when Americans stood up and said so, they were called unpatriotic or worse. The Bush/Cheney officials, all of them, should remember that. They had their chance, now it's someone elses turn.
Be part of the solution or you're part of the problem.

donmcybertect   April 24th, 2009 9:39 am ET

Right, Liz. And your father is defending torture which we have prosecuted others for. He feels like he just MUST stand up and criticize this administration when his do so much to protect us? As I recall the intelligence agencies said something like " Al Quaeada determinded to strike US..." No torture. And how did he respond? How did that one go down, Liz?

Connie   April 24th, 2009 9:38 am ET

Another Cheney member criticizing the Democrats AGAIN!! When will they realize their opinions really don't matter to the people behind our great President! I personally am relieved that President Obama has *dug his heels* into the more critical issues he was faced with when taking office; it will take some time to remedy what was broken for so long....quit being so critical; sounds like sour grapes AGAIN!!

andy   April 24th, 2009 9:38 am ET

what a bunch of losers! do something good in ur life for once, stop talking about obama.
God bless our president!

Dimples   April 24th, 2009 9:38 am ET

Another Cheney with a real concern. Who cares what Liz Cheney thinks or the entire Cheney gang for that matter. Liz ,we are no longer on that "dangerous path" because the Bush administration is over. I'm sure Iraq sees us as a beacon of hope, otherwise why would a journalist throw his shoes at George Bush? Dick gave the "ok" to use waterboarding and I'm sure Liz thinks that's ok too. They had the last eight years to show some concern. Please don't concern yourselves now. Liz, you could stand up and defend America by keeping your negative opinion to yourself. Be quiet for a change!

Steve C. - Atlanta, GA   April 24th, 2009 9:38 am ET

Sounds like it's Cheney's way or now way....why can't these people realize that there are better ways to building international relationships than bullying... Anyone can stand up and make threats and do a tarzan yell about how strong we are, but only natural born leaders can work through others in a diplomatic way to faciliate communication and positive results. The world needs to see America in a much different way than it has over the past 8 years and Obama understands that!

Liz D.   April 24th, 2009 9:38 am ET

He certainly has the right to criticize the President. That's what makes this country great. I do find it ironic that the man most responsible to putting this country in such a poor light around the world and instigating the Iraq war which has been a breeding ground for terrorists where there were none before, is accusing this President of making the U.S. less safe. As far as I'm concerned, as well as millions of Americans, Dick Cheney is the man responsible for making this country less safe.

S Callahan   April 24th, 2009 9:37 am ET

I certainly agree we have to be defensive in words as protector of our nation...but that does not mean we can't extend an olive leaf to those who want peace as well. If there is intent not meant for the good will of America I feel confident to say God will reveal that, in his timing. I wonder when the world will understand that God's intent is for mankind to live in harmony, which is inclusive of peace.

Canadian   April 24th, 2009 9:37 am ET

"...we are a beacon of hope for people all around the world."

This is exactly the type of elitest attitude that divides us as human beings first and foremost. No other nation looks at Americans as a "beacon of hope." If anything, we look at the majority of Americans as uneducated, overweight, biggots as evidenced by many comments on here during the election. Think about it, if Americans were a beacon of hope for all around the world, why would President Obama feel the need to "stand up" to the other countries that despise the USA. There would be no tension if everyone was looking up to the USA. People around the world hate Americans which is why there are constant threats to your country. President Obama was correct not to further alienating these countries and maybe everyone else can start to understand not everyone loves you. Damaged relationships need to be repaired and Obama is doing just that.

Let the man go through with his plan. I can't believe people that come on here and rip him for not fixing the economy in 100 days. 100 days to fix what took 8 years to destroy? Yeah, very reasonable! Give him a chance.

Dave in Dayton   April 24th, 2009 9:37 am ET

I think Liz Cheney must be jealous of all the media attention that Megan McCain is getting...she now wants her 15 minutes of fame, or maybe she's going to write a book, too!.

In any event, the venues that Obama attended weren't platforms for designed for him to remind the other countries that the US is still a superpower. And, I prefer the President's thoughtful and respectful approach to diplomacy.

I find it so interesting that Dick Cheney tries to come off as this wonderful statesman...he sure never put his skills to any good use in the eight years he was VP.

shane   April 24th, 2009 9:37 am ET

I don't think there's a real issue with our obama's position and how he carried himself during his visit, we're the 2nd strongest superpower in the world, why not stay modest and humble, tread softy and carry a big stick, what did that latin president gain by his rant?? nothing, and we didn't lose much ground either, it was actually well deserved and I find it ironic that the same people who are talking about the dangerous path we're, did little to nothing to stop the cliff we've fallen from the last 8 years.

Bill NY   April 24th, 2009 9:36 am ET

No one has taken this great country down more dangerous paths and slippery slopes than Bush-Cheney. It seems as if Mr. Cheney's greatest concern was for the well being of Halliburton and not his fellow countrymen. When I look at the sorry state they left this land of ours in, I am almost driven to insanity by their unmitigated gaul.

An American Also..........   April 24th, 2009 9:36 am ET

As an American and very, very happy with our new Administration and so happy the old is out, you and your father are free to leave the country anytime you want. If you don't like it then leave! I have never been prouder to be an American under the protection of our President Barack H Obama and Vice President Joe Biden and our Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.

www.SpaCyber.com   April 24th, 2009 9:36 am ET

How much more damage do these people want to do...your turn is over, move-on.

Jeff in Atlanta   April 24th, 2009 9:35 am ET

With each passing day the weakness of obama as a leader becomes more evident. Hillary and Biden were right, inexperience does matter and we are the ones suffering for being like sheep instead of informed votes last January 20th.
Let's not let it happen again. Let's get smart and elect leaders, not readers.

BWG   April 24th, 2009 9:35 am ET

Dick Cheney had 8 years to get it right–and failed miserably! Now it's time for him to show some small hint of decency and professionalism and keep his comments to himself!!! Oh, yes, and go away!

Tina   April 24th, 2009 9:34 am ET

Um, Miss Cheney, thanks to your dad and his cronies, we are no longer a beacon of hope. Its kind of hard to stand up and defend the atrocities of the last 8 years. But then again your dad seems to think he did all the right things so I dont blame you.

The Nak   April 24th, 2009 9:34 am ET

Isn't funny how were hearing more out of Cheney now then when he was VP ??

Cheryl   April 24th, 2009 9:34 am ET

Because of the Bush administration it is impossible for America to be any "beacon of hope" for the world. They have already brought us down paths that are very conerning and dangerous (and we are learning more of it everyday). A beacon of hope that tortures? A beacon of hope that disregards the constitution and what America has stood for? Cheney and his daughter should be ashamed, they DO NOT represent America, at least not any America I want to be part of. Keep up the good work in trying to restore America's reputation both here and all over the world President Obama!

calle   April 24th, 2009 9:33 am ET

I think Obama does stand up for America on every trip that he has taken. If the "Haters" would listen sometimes instead of reacting they would hear Obama apologize for the more recent 8 year brain fart that America has had. Basically Lynn he apologizes for the less than stellar policies of the Administration that your father recently participated in or should I say the administration that your father ran. Don't get it twisted. Truely listen to what Obama says.

Marty in PA   April 24th, 2009 9:33 am ET

It's time for the Cheney's to step away and shut up. He had his time in power, and screwed our foreign policy up royally with his hawkish and unethical practices. Now someone with morals and intelligence is in charge, and Cheney's opinions have NO IMPORTANCE.

So, buh-bye Cheney and family. I'm pretty surprised at the amount of air time the MSM is giving them!

Marty, Grand Rapids Mi   April 24th, 2009 9:33 am ET

Liz and Dick, your arrogance astounds me. It's a great thing to defend the United States. But, it's also a great thing to admit your mistakes and/or failings. Your Father and President Bush destroyed our image around the world. Some humility is required to help build it back. This doesn't make us weak and it doesn't cost us anything. But it can help the image of America that was lost post 9/11.

Bill   April 24th, 2009 9:25 am ET

How pompous to think that we should be the model of morality and decency for the entire world. Yet another loud-mouthed redneck comment from someone that looks a lot better with their mouth shut. Has any republican ever heard of the word "co-exist"?

California Gold   April 24th, 2009 9:25 am ET

Translation: she wants this President to 'stand up', and defend her father and what he did. The problem is not our President. The problem is what Dick Cheney and George Bush did. No "Truth Commission" necessary. We have laws and deeply probing investigations to root out and bring to light what Cheney and Bush did. The laws of the land, which they deftly brushed aside, are the laws that Cheney will be measured against. That is what's causing Cheney to be annoyingly aggressive and unrelentingly critical. And because of Cheney's defensive behavor what has come to light is the tip of the iceberg.

Steven   April 24th, 2009 9:25 am ET

First of all, for Igor Cheney to be bad mouthing our commander in chief, Obama, during a time of war and economic hard times, when the nation should be pulling together, is very unpatriotic and serves no purpose. Second, Cheney comes from the very administration that brought us these wars and ran our economy into the ground....He has had his time...it is over. Now he needs to shut his mouth.

fred   April 24th, 2009 9:25 am ET

Can you people please STOP posting articles about the criminal Cheney family?

No one in America cares one iota what they think!

Lorna   April 24th, 2009 9:25 am ET

"The vice president thinks it's very important, when you see the country go down paths that are concerning and dangerous....." Ms. Cheney...you mean like the path your father and the Bush administration took us down for 8 years? I see the apple didn't fall too far from the hypocrisy tree with you did it? Your opinion is about as respected and heeded as your pater familiaris. Actually, all the Obama administration needs to do is listen to Dick's offerings...then do the complete OPPOSITE and we'll be okay!

Bret   April 24th, 2009 9:25 am ET

It's amazing, we hardly heard a word from the Cheney's for 8 years while Daddy was hunkered down in his cave. Now the whole lot of them won't shut up.

seanwhit   April 24th, 2009 9:25 am ET

It is really telling when the children feel the need to publicly defend the parent-the apple really does not fall far....

Teresa   April 24th, 2009 9:25 am ET

This is the Change America voted for, lets give it a chance. The old administration left us with a mess and it is going to take trial and error and TIME to fix it.

Chris ~ Albany, NY   April 24th, 2009 9:24 am ET

Listen, I understand that you have to defend your father, but your defending a war criminal! Plain and simple. If anyone in your family has looked at the last election it was a sweeping repudiation of your fathers and the republicans positions! Face it the majority of this country dosn't put any stock into what your saying or your positions on anything!

Nick in IA   April 24th, 2009 9:24 am ET

Hmmm. Maybe Liz's memory is as selective as her father's. In fact, On his recent trip to Europe, President Obama did scold Europeans for their perceived dislike of America while recognizing we (primarily under her father's watch) had done some things that were truly not consistent with our stated ideals. It's called being a grown up, Liz. Grown ups admit when they've made a mistake and move forward.

Bob (Illinois)   April 24th, 2009 9:24 am ET

The apple doesn't fall far from the tree. How true.

afmcalax   April 24th, 2009 9:23 am ET

Unfortunately what Liz Cheney does not comprehend is that her father has helped extinguish the light that used to represent hope to the rest of the world. His heavy handed, uncompromising, non-listening approach turned off not just our enemies but our allies. What President Obama is doing is proving once again that America is willing to listen. The America is willing to acccept criticism and look inward. What Republicans continue to not understand is the old adage "Sticks and Stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me." America is mature enough and strong enough to listen to words we don't like and move on. Liz and her father need to grow up.

J Stuart   April 24th, 2009 9:23 am ET

Defending America and defending the actions of the Bush-Cheney administration are two different things. Obama needs to restore America to its role as a respected world leader, something that Bush-Cheney tore down. You can't and shouldn't defend wrongful and criminal acts just because a President or Vice President ordered them. Having your justice department write memos supporting torture and then ordering the acts, ordering illegal wiretaps does not make them any less wrong. That is not what this country stands for. Obama is restoring America's place in the world and he will never accomplish that by defending the actions of the Bush-Cheney administration.

Jim   April 24th, 2009 9:23 am ET

The cheney's are so yesterday. Please go back under your rock.

Simply   April 24th, 2009 9:23 am ET

I don't think AMerica is a "beacon of hope" anymore. In case these rich Cheney's haven't noticed we've been doing very badly thanks to Bush and as long as we're protected physically, why should we "defend ourselves" against comments made? Another example of intense focus on the wrong issue.

a rose is a rose   April 24th, 2009 9:23 am ET

hey liz, as an american it 'skeeves' ME when i see an entire administration (the prior one of course) spit on then stomp on our constitution! during that prior administration we were NEVER "a beacon of hope". our leaders not only lied to the american public, they neglected their own citizens during natural disasters, they went to war with a country that NEVER attacked us OR even threatened us, they haulted valuable medical testing, they didn't separate church and state, they TORTURED (against our own laws AND the geneva convention) AND they spied on us WITHOUT warrants.
yeah liz, where were you and your mouth when THAT was going on.

Josef F   April 24th, 2009 9:23 am ET

Remember the good old days when former administrations and their hangers-on had the decency to not bad-mouth the new administration?

Algernon   April 24th, 2009 9:23 am ET

Ignoring the fact that Dick Cheney's approach to the world created more enemies for us, provided al Qaeda with an environment to recruit and train, compromised our moral standing, alienated our allies, violated our own laws and international agreements (thus cheapening our good name), and stained us with the shame of torture.

I am not 100% in agreement with our new president, but I am by no means embarrassed or shamed by his performance thus far.

adamandkanani   April 24th, 2009 9:23 am ET

All these Republicans want more of the same tough guy talk. Where did that get us? Just more enemies.
There is a difference between talking tough and being tough. Sometimes you have to take the high road, smile, extend a hand and love your enemy rather than threaten and attack. Funny thing is these are the same folks that claim to be good wholesome Christians but their first extinct is war and bullying and talking tough. Well that has not brought the world peace...ever.
It just creates more enemies. Cheney and his lot must be really bored now that they are not in power. Go enjoy life and retire in peace.
We were attacked on your watch, remember? Lot of good your tough talk did us.

I'm sick of these schoolyard bullies.

BillOReits   April 24th, 2009 9:23 am ET

Sorry Ms. Cheney but after 8 years under your daddy's extremist leadership, this country – now a shadow of its proud past – does have much to apologize for. Just think, lost souls like your father have to actually defend the barbarism of torture. From recent history that puts him in the company of the Khmer Rouge, Imperial Japan and North Korea; all proponents of your daddy's preferred technique – waterboarding.

Barb   April 24th, 2009 9:23 am ET

Arrogance runs in the family! Another supporter of the attitudes that took this country down a path of destruction abroad and at home. Because of the Bush/Chaney administration this country is deep in debt and having to repair our image around the world. The Chaney family needs to understand that we Americans have more confidence in the Obama administration than we've had in the last eight years! Go away Chaneys!!!

Pete   April 24th, 2009 9:23 am ET

Ahh great another day of the Cheney's in the news. When did that family become so talkative. Absurd. Its like we are in the Twilight Zone.

Mississippi Mike   April 24th, 2009 9:23 am ET

Obama apologizes for America or says that whatever bad things happened took place before he came into power. He doesn't defend America because he isn't proud of America, he wants to change it to what he thought it should have been like.

Debra Austin, Texas   April 24th, 2009 9:23 am ET

Who is this pipsqueak who obviously wants to defend her dad but knows NOTHING about what it takes to keep a country safe. It's time for the kids of politicians to shut up. Unless they are in the fray, have some knowledge and experience with the topic, their opinions are useless.

AV   April 24th, 2009 9:22 am ET

You know, there's a difference between actually defending our nation, and getting riled up when someone says something nasty about it. In fact, some might argue that there's a degree of mutual exclusivity there. We don't need to get into a barroom brawl every time someone trashes the USofA on the international stage. Posturing, shouting and shoving are for little guys. The president knows we're a big nation and we don't need to get into it with every punk who has a few too many and starts mouthing off. He also knows that that sort of behavior would only fuel the notion that the US is an international bully. We need to be respected, not just feared.

Alex   April 24th, 2009 9:22 am ET

Liz Cheney is a beacon of ignorance just like her daddy. Cheney needs to check his ego and sit down, he had his chance to stand up and he failed. He is an old grumpy man. He is the most disturbing man I've seen as part of the administration.

A. Goodwin   April 24th, 2009 9:22 am ET

Liz Cheney – fearful that your dad is going to jail? You must be! You do not speak for the rest of Americans who feel that your dad and his buddies deserve to be locked up. You speak for the minority who feel the same as you. The rest of us, however, are relieved that your dad is out of office and potentially heading for the slammer.

Your dad and his buddies made our world less safe, and now Obama has to clean up after his mess. Most Americans, including many Republican's, agree that your dad and his agenda is the worst thing that has happened to America since Viet Nam! You have no credibility whatsoever.

Diane Ghil   April 24th, 2009 9:22 am ET

Please, please cheney family go away. If i see mainstream media talk about the criminal cheney I will turn it off. Cheney led us down the path of economic ruin and he is a war monger – he should be criminally charged for not only torture but for forcing us into war with Iraq.
I really don't want to read or see anything that criminal has to say. Just go away to your ranch and living on the billions you got from your oil boys.

J.Crobuzon   April 24th, 2009 9:21 am ET

What a shock, another Republican who doesn't like the president. And has no better idea. Quick, call a press conference, I'm clueless but I can criticize people, She and Meghan McCain could do a reality show called "I'm Irrelevant, Get me out of here."

dustbunny   April 24th, 2009 9:21 am ET

You'r right Liz. We have a wuss for a prez. Things are already going down the drain in Iraq and Pac. They now know obama is weak and they are taking anvantage of it. It is just the start of things.

Evan   April 24th, 2009 9:21 am ET

Sometimes the best way to do good for your country is NOT to stand up in righteous indignation every time someone tries to hurt your feelings. It makes people seem stubborn and ignorant. But I would expect no less from a Cheney. Thank God that Obama is putting and end to belligerent warmongering. Hostility does not bring progress.

Liz   April 24th, 2009 9:21 am ET

Cheney, I think President Obama DID say that he will defend America – all he said in addition to that was that the US will listen and work WITH the rest of the world. In other words, he's actually being a leader.

Jason B.   April 24th, 2009 9:21 am ET

Yeah, because the tone we had the last 8 years worked so well! How many allies did we alienate? How little trust do people have in the U.S. now?

Che   April 24th, 2009 9:20 am ET

It all depends on what lens you look at President Obam's trip through. Obviously the statement carries some bias and many in America see Obama's trip in a more positive light. After years of alienating ourselves from the international community, a little humility might be in order to actually bolster our image. If Obama used the trip as an opportunity to defend policies that have hurt America's image, the chance that relations between the US and the international community to get better would have diminished. It seems that the only people that think Obama is weak are Republicans. What a surprise!

Brad   April 24th, 2009 9:20 am ET

Poor Liz, don't you realize that america USED to be a "Beacon of Hope for people all around the world" BUT then your sick, demented, f(*& up father turned all of that good will into hate? Have you traveled outside of Wyoming lately? Try even Italy and see how our country is perceived. You, and your despicable, senile father will never get it. Dick is simply trying to ratchet up the fear factor in order to slow down the process of his downfall. The facts that continue to come out regarding torture and his re writing our laws will continue, and his fear mongering will not distract us.

Liz Cheney, find a place you think considers us a beacon of hope and please fly there as fast as possible.

Lisa   April 24th, 2009 9:20 am ET

Liz – your father and Bush ruined that image of America unfortunately. A "Beacon of Hope" does not torture, and worse, does not DEFEND TORTURE!! America will be true to its beliefs when we prosecute all those involved in this – including your father.

BKrause   April 24th, 2009 9:19 am ET

Perhaps a little insight into how her father undermined the ethical and moral fabric of what American should stand for would be more appropriate if Liz needs to cast blame somewhere.

andrew   April 24th, 2009 9:19 am ET

more blather in an attempt to distract from the prosecution of her father.

how did she get that State Department job anyway??

Angela   April 24th, 2009 9:19 am ET

Liz, I do believe your father has done enough for our country. Just look at the great shape we are in after his 8 years.

Elmo   April 24th, 2009 9:19 am ET

The point is that America used to be a beacon of hope for people around the world, until Bush and Cheney took over and, granted under extraordinary circumstances, started torturing people, like some other countries the US is quick to criticize

Kevin   April 24th, 2009 9:19 am ET

The apple doesn't fall far from the tree. Dick Cheney is an embarrassment to this nation and will go down as the worst VP in this nations history.

Billy Ray Valentine   April 24th, 2009 9:19 am ET

I guess you didn't see where he did Liz. Where do Americans get the idea that we're never wrong and we don't apologize. Even though we have led the world in many facets, we still are not perfect. Humility, is what the president is offering. This attitude portrayed by Ms. Cheney is the same attitude that is destroying the GOP. Go right ahead, continue to walk down the plank.

Sniffit   April 24th, 2009 9:19 am ET

Whooooooo caaaaaaares?

BTW, this is all misdirection anyway. The FACT is, it is Bush and Cheney who failed to stand up for America by abandoning our core principles as a society. The mark of a true patriot is one who will face adversity and the tests of his belief in his nation's founding ideals and mores and NOT WAIVER. Bush and Cheney scrapped it all in the name of expedience and THAT is moral treason.

TV   April 24th, 2009 9:19 am ET

I find it interesting that he is so vocal now, while in office, he was nearly invisible.

I believe that Obama takes the proper approach; by not recognizing each and every comment from world leaders, but only focuses on the serious situations. Maybe if Bush/Cheney did the same, we would not be where we are today.

Hmmm.....maybe some regrets ?

JB   April 24th, 2009 9:19 am ET

This is almost pathetic that this man's daughter has to validate his position. Cheney was a nut as VP and is still a nut. I see the apple does not fall far from the tree when it comes to his daughter. It we try to address every fool out there that criticizes the US then hell we wouldn't even have to the time to address the immediate concerns we have here in America, i.e. jobs, recssion, etc. These idiiots had their chance and blew it. Cheney needs to improve his hunting skills and relax his mind!!!

Sharon   April 24th, 2009 9:18 am ET

Who? I could care less what she or her Dad says about Obama. What gall?????? If Cheney and Bush did not lie to start a war with Iraq, we would all be safer!

lance   April 24th, 2009 9:18 am ET

Dear Cheney Family,
No one cares what you think. You were once in office, however, the majority of the American people no longer want to hear your opinions. It was your opinions that got us into this terrible terrible mess.

Please return to life and stop assuming we all care what you think of Obama.

Karen- PROUD OF MY PRESIDENT   April 24th, 2009 9:18 am ET

Who the hell is Liz Cheney. She should not only slam her husband but she should slap him as well. No one cares about the Cheney's, I only care that Cheney receives the same treatment as he imposed on others. I pray he goes to jail soon.

Sick and Tired   April 24th, 2009 9:18 am ET

What is with these people? We've heard more from Dick and Company since he's been out of office more than we did when he was in office. I wish they'd put a sock in it already.

Child of God   April 24th, 2009 9:18 am ET

We are not always a beacon of hope and the problem with most so-called christians is that they think repentance is only done when it feels good. We as Americans need to repent for the past 8 years mistakes and any other mistakes we have made. Obama has shown himself to be more christian than the religious right. They see what they want to see. What they need to realize is that it is written in the Bible; God is far off from the pride but shows favor towards the humble. It's time for America to become a humble nation and watch how God will grant us favor we didn't work for.

You people who have so much hate in your heart surprises me which is why i don't worship with "Evangelicals" "Republicans" or any other people I grew up liking. After this and the past two elections you people have shown yourselves to be nothing more than Ravenous wolves in sheeps clothing, Angels of dark perpetrating as angels of light, a brood of vipers and White washed tombs; Look good on the outside but in the inside are nothing but dead dried bones!

Jo Ann   April 24th, 2009 9:18 am ET

Someone needs to tell the Cheney's they had their turn at bat and they struck out, Their ballgame is over and they lost They need to get a life. Maybe they feel like Rush.....they WANT Obama to fail. Don't they care about the people who go down the drain if Obama's plans don't work? But they didn't care who they hurt or killed when they were at bat, why should they now? What kind of American is that!!!!!!

Fred Evil   April 24th, 2009 9:18 am ET

And who in their right mind cares what ANY Cheney thinks, father OR daughter? Her father was at least partly responsible for an utter moral breakdown in our government, a great ethical collapse that I bet will be discussed for decades, if not for millenia.

SHAME

Scott   April 24th, 2009 9:18 am ET

Does Liz think that Obama should have tortured Ortega? Seriously, that whole family must be one sick and twisted bunch.

Jennie   April 24th, 2009 9:17 am ET

These comments coming from ms cheney, whose father showed absolute disregard for the constitution and rule of law, are absolutely laughable. Is that her version of patriotism and honor to our country? The opinions of people of such ilk hold no bearing for me.

Anonymous   April 24th, 2009 9:17 am ET

Get real lets take care of America and let others worry about the world. 50 yeasrs of the policy of butting into others problems have not worked.

gsmraleigh   April 24th, 2009 9:16 am ET

What is it with these Cheneys? Who gives a hoot about what they think?

And, as for Liz Cheney, wonder why she didn't speak up to defend this country's gay and lesbian citizens when her father, the Bush administration and the right wing nuts were pushing legalized discrimination???

Jaime   April 24th, 2009 9:16 am ET

Liz,

You would have wanted Obama to stand up and say 'Wait a minute, you know, I'm going to defend the United States of America because we are a beacon of hope for people all around the world,' while or after hearing Ortega? I believe that Obama joked about the 50 minute rant. Maybe your dad does not know about diplomacy because a head of state cannot just get up and "defend" America when an insignificant man wants to give himself some sort of recognition for what he is not. Getting up and tell it to Ortega would be giving it the relevance that Ortega wants and does not have. Obama turned it nicely by saying that he hoped that he was not being blamed for the Bay of Pigs invasion since he was only 3 years old (or something like that). He got a lot laughs, and in my view, that put Ortega back in his place. The village idiot who has not moved on from the cold war that he fought as a proxy of the USSR. Can you tell me why we are less safe? I still don't get that one, except to think that your dad may be indicted by the Justice Department for authorizing torture.

KIM   April 24th, 2009 9:16 am ET

It is truely amazing when we talk of security of this great nation. Former VP Cheney always seems to speak about this. Yet we know that torture was always a precurser for retaliation and that attacking non-guilty countries opens the door to the creation of more enemies.
We say we must keep terrorist out, but the southern border is wide open for cheap labors unchallenged entry. It appears these issues are only emphasized when it is to benefit of whatever agenda he is working under at the moment. The undermined economy and depletion of our national weath has made this country more insecure then any other time in history. Please former VP Cheney,... GO AWAY.... You and your crew have had your turns..........

Gabe   April 24th, 2009 9:16 am ET

Does it really matter what the Cheneys think anymore? ANY of them?? Where were they when they were in office and the public wanted answers? Unfortunately, they were nowhere to be found. Frankly, I think they should all just ride off into the sunset and let the historians deal with their eight-year fiasco. Time will dictate that the Bush administration - obviously Cheney included - was one of the worst in history.

Good riddance ... NOW GO AWAY!!!!

Kate   April 24th, 2009 9:16 am ET

I loved Bill Maher's column in the LA Times today. It addresses the grumpy losers of the GOP. And, by the way, why doesn't Cheney's daughter talk about the ease with which she finds jobs simply because she's the daughter of a former Vice President? Must be nice to have things handed to you, including a platform to criticize the President. Your father had his turn in power. It's over. Kaput. Done. Gone. Adios.

Terry   April 24th, 2009 9:15 am ET

Dick Cheney is in the same position that Nixon was in after his resignation. He spent his time in exile at his California home, defending himself and pretending that he had done nothing wrong. It is a hopeless position because the world is never going to change its opinion about him. His supporters are limited to die-hard Republicans who will never, as a matter of policy, admit that any Republican anywhere has ever done anything wrong. They do not support Cheney so much as they support the Conservative cause. No one would be happier than Republicans if Cheney would just move to Antarctica and retire.

Ian Gramaccioni   April 24th, 2009 9:15 am ET

Liz,

I would be very interested in knowing your definition of standing up for America? It must go something like this:

1) Start a war on fabricated intelligence

2) Torture POW's

3) Install financial policies that weaken the country

In addition, please kindly tell me what the last eight years of of your fathers foreign policy have done to demonstrate the "beacon of hope" you speak of?!?

nganenu   April 24th, 2009 9:15 am ET

Stupid thinking. So when a few hawk reel at other, humiliate them, torture them, that is standing up hien? Meghan McCain sounds more interesting than this. Did you say fathers and children politics?
Nganenu

Beth in Texas   April 24th, 2009 9:15 am ET

Liz Cheney didn't seem too concerned when her father and his criminal side kick authorized the torture of prisoners across the world.
Where was that "beacon of hope" Liz?

Jon   April 24th, 2009 9:15 am ET

I agree. I am a moderate and I think that our President should stand up for America. I listened to his overseas speeches and it almost made me embarrassed to be an American. Any Obama supporter that does not see that the POTUS has an obligation to tell people like Ortega to go to hell when they rail against us when they are the worst in the world is stupid. Be a real American Mr. President and do not sacrifice our reputation because you wish to be popular.

bill   April 24th, 2009 9:15 am ET

Liz cheney?? are you serious? The republicans will use anybody to make comments. Bright newsworthy people like joe the plumber, bristol palin sarah palin. Sarah Palin dosen't even read or can't read newspapers and magazines. Now thats scary-not how Obama is running the country. If the republicans were smart(they're not) they wuld keep their mouth shut because all this mess were in THEY caused. There's absolutely no doubt about that.

Mikey   April 24th, 2009 9:14 am ET

Sorry, Liz. Your father and Bush left this country in a position where some apologies are necessary, evidenced by our diminished world standing over the last eight years. Now like your father, please crawl back under your rock and be quiet. Your disastrous eight years in the sun have thankfully come to an end...

Joe   April 24th, 2009 9:14 am ET

Hurray for Cheney he has the courage to stand up to Obama who is leading us down a dangerous road. We appologize to everyone, we tell our enemies what we are doing, shake hands with dictators while their citizens fight for freedom, we have lost all of our values. But then again what do I know I am labeled an Extremist by the Obama Homeland security department.
I know we got some useful information from interogating terrorist and this information probably saved lives of our service men, but hey, I agree with all you liberals, kill over 3000 of our citizen and we should not torture you like those who burned in the towers, but we should of put you all up in 4 star hotel,
If we go after Bush for torture which saved American lives, we should go after Truman for bombing Japan with nuclear weapons. Which by the way saved my dad's life in the Pacific Theater.

Liz   April 24th, 2009 9:14 am ET

Cheney had his chance and he blew it! He is going down in history as one of the worse Vice-Presidents. His daughter is a joke.

conniesz   April 24th, 2009 9:14 am ET

I wish the Cheneys would just get over themselves. Our president is being presidential. There is no reason to defend yourself against the spewing of a crazed South American dictator – to do so would only lend credence to his remarks.

Don't these people know anything besides confrontation and sabre rattling? It's like they don't know the first thing about human interactions beyond being the bully. We tried that – it didn't work. Now we're going the way of speaking quietly – the big stick is always there if we really need it, but it should be the last resort, not the first.

Michael   April 24th, 2009 9:14 am ET

These people need to do the decent thing and GO AWAY!!!

Bill in Oregon   April 24th, 2009 9:13 am ET

Not even worth a comment. You may need to be concerned about Dick going to jail.

Dan   April 24th, 2009 9:13 am ET

Your father took it down the tubes!

Creative Woody   April 24th, 2009 9:11 am ET

The only real concern from you here is your daddy isn't in charge anymore. Cry more.

walker   April 24th, 2009 9:11 am ET

Where was Liz when her father was out there lying about Bin Laden activity in Iraq? Where was Liz when Cheney was telling Bush what to do? This is a giant case of Daddy's little girl.

steve   April 24th, 2009 9:11 am ET

She has to realize that the same beacon of hope was hijacked by her father and when he behaves no less than the terrorists that we are fighting against , we ought to tender an apology for letting down the world.

The same arrogant behavior and high handedness cost us some allies who in the past stood by us in times of difficulty.

Being humble doesn't hurt especially when you are at fault.

Farrell, Houston, Tx   April 24th, 2009 9:11 am ET

I wonder if Liz Cheney agrees with her dad for not standing up for gay rights. Repeatedly while he was in office when asked about his own daughter on behalf of gay rights Cheney refused to comment. Cheney is a coward and stands for nothing but evil.

Ron Carson   April 24th, 2009 9:11 am ET

To show strength, Obama could have us invade some random country for no apparent reason.

Matt   April 24th, 2009 9:10 am ET

First of all, who are you and why would we care what you think? Secondly, the bush administration made us look awful and we lost standing in the world with his cowboy approach! Shut up and sit down! Educated people understand that you apologize for your mistakes and stand up when it's necessary, it isn't yet and president Obama will when it's needed and mind you, he's apologizing for your fathers criminal acts! He also pointed out the hatred of Americans abroad and how it needs to stop!

Kristin   April 24th, 2009 9:09 am ET

I see a Meghan McCain Vs Liz Cheney title match brewing. Who is the next new face of the Republican Party- in the right corner we have Chomper Cheney and in the other right corner we have McPain McCain. GET READY TO RUMBLE- ding ding ding.

Robert Sparks   April 24th, 2009 9:09 am ET

Come on, think about it. Why is Dick speaking out? It's his last ditch effort to re-write the history books and divert some attention in an effort to save his own hide. I doubt that an ex US President will be prosecuted for torture. But, it's very possible for an ex US Vice President. And in fact, it's looking highly likely.

John Showalter   April 24th, 2009 9:09 am ET

Well, the thing is...America isn't really a beacon of hope anymore. The economy's tanking, jobs are scarce and we are xenophobic.

Nic   April 24th, 2009 9:09 am ET

Wow, no one cares what the Cheney's think...I think you're father is UN-AMERICAN for lying about the WMD's in Iraq which is one of the main reason's we've been stuck there for 8 years....

Just go away...

Ken   April 24th, 2009 9:09 am ET

Who cares what the ex-vice president's daughter thinks?
Was anyone clambering for Kristin Gore's critique of W's first hundred days? This is not news.

Had It   April 24th, 2009 9:09 am ET

Yes, Liz – we are a beacon of hope-– NOW THAT YOUR DAD IS OUT OF OFFICE.

Imagine it's tuff for you to watch him being cornered by his evil deeds. WE, US Citizens, want him to serve time for his crimes. Good riddance.

Seattle Sue   April 24th, 2009 9:09 am ET

Liz Cheney is defending her dad, Dick Cheney because she fears he may be going to prison. But she can visit him there.

AmFem   April 24th, 2009 9:09 am ET

I'm not sure I understand what the point is. If Dick Cheney is irrelevant (and he most certainly is), than his daughter is even more irrelevant. Her opinion means nothing. Please stop giving these people air time as if what they have to say has any credibility.

Mack   April 24th, 2009 9:09 am ET

For 8 years, I never even heard Dick Cheney speak to know what his voice sounded like; now that he is out of office, it seems as if he has plenty to say – all the time. For 8 years, George W. hardly did anything; now that he's out of office, we haven't even seen him except to throw out the first ball at a baseball game.

President Obama is attempting to do some things that Bush and Cheney should've done during their terms. Obama has only been in office 3 months; Bush and Cheney had 8 years to fix things and didn't.

Sue   April 24th, 2009 9:09 am ET

One Cheney was not enough, now we have to hear from another one!

Virginia from PA   April 24th, 2009 9:09 am ET

Nobody on this planet should have to stand up and try to defend anything that Dick Cheney did during his 8 years as VP.

JML   April 24th, 2009 9:08 am ET

Liz your father sure DID NOT "stand up" he was simple put a SNAKE-N-the-GRASS. Why do you think people will allow the double standard the Cheney's continue to dishout? They won't so now you look just like your father...............................a MAJOR deciever!

Paul from Kissimmee   April 24th, 2009 9:08 am ET

She's right. But let's see what all of the weak liberals have to say on this page.

Tom Meyer   April 24th, 2009 9:08 am ET

Before we can stand again with our head held high we have to get back the respect that Dick Cheney and George Bush tossed aside with their cowboy attitude. Lying to other countries to invade another country, using torture against all the laws we put in place and the list goes on. The American people can see the difference of who is making the comments against us and consider the source. We as real Americans now have to reestablish our values to undo the damage done to our stature and power in the world.

anonymous   April 24th, 2009 9:08 am ET

Can they ever say anything constructive anymore? Rather than criticize and point the finger give some suggestions.

Mickey   April 24th, 2009 9:08 am ET

While I agree Obama does not defend our country and everyone is entitled to their opinions, when it comes from the very recent past administration ( family members included ) it just sounds like sour grapes. They had their time...........move on.

Paulo   April 24th, 2009 9:08 am ET

First of all, the idea we are more at risk is a speculative notion. There is no way to guage whether it is true or not.

Secondly, the credibility of Cheney needs to be considered on everything he says at this point. The man has put "facts" out on numerous occasions that turned out to be not supported by the evidence.

I understand the Bush Administration was in a very difficult position after 9/11 and they just were not philosophically, logically or mentally up to the challenge. If you do not believe me, you need to check out the Cheney Doctrine. It is even more frightening, illogical and prone to abuse than the Bush Doctrine ever was.

I take everything Cheney says with a grain of salt.

Britannia   April 24th, 2009 9:07 am ET

To echo Meghan McCain's words, I wish Dick Cheney would just go away. There are many reasons why he didn't stand for President last year; could it be his underhand dealings as VP had something to do with this?

Samuel   April 24th, 2009 9:07 am ET

Aw, have another plate of sour grapes, Liz. Daddy Dearest has been proven to be a criminal, so I guess it's only natural for you to do a little tail-wagging-the-dog to try to get people to NOT notice Cheney's criminal activities over the last 8 years.

Bad news. Many of us already noticed and want him tried and convicted, so stop trying to get people's attention away from what's important.

gl, Pittsburgh   April 24th, 2009 9:07 am ET

Former President Bush has said publicly that the new president deserves his silence. Cheney said her father had not sought the former president's approval for his recent comments. "He doesn't need permission," she said

She is just like her father evil and thinks her fatther was the President not Bush. It is called respect toward your former boss not permission. We all know Cheney mulipuated Bush. I really didn't care mush about Bush, but her lately I am seeing that Bush might have been a better President if you didn't have Dick Cheney on his team pulling alll the strings behind the sence. Now Dick Cheney is letting us all know really was running the USA and it wasn't Bush.

Robert   April 24th, 2009 9:07 am ET

Personally, I think Cheney is making so much noise just in case he missed something in his efforts to destroy anything that might point to his culpability in approving torture. If he gets his face in front of a camera often enough in the run up, any effort to prosecute him will look like a political vendetta. He's evil, but he isn't stupid. I am not a liberal, but voted against this administration twice. I believe the American people deserve to know what is done in their name, because the rest of the world will certainly know of and believe it whether we do or not. I also believe that it isn't productive to engage in public dialogue with every half-wit who makes abusive statements about the United States. Some of it is just beneath us to respond to, and I applaud the current President for having the wisdom to know when that is the case. This isn't a playground, after all.

Lisa T   April 24th, 2009 9:06 am ET

Liz, your father did more harm to the image of the United States than President Obama will ever be able to do! Your father is a bully and displays the same type of leadership style as Ahmedenijad, Chavez and Ortega which is to say they all use the bully pulpit to instill fear in others. We don't want to be feared – we want to be respected for our human rights record, our charitable contributions, our ability to stand up against our enemies without resorting to their tactics, etc.!

President Obama "gets it"! He understands that in order to be looked upon as benevolent leaders we have to act as such. He understands that we are more than capable of defeating our enemies when the need arises and yet we don't need to go around threatening them all of the time.

Bullying doesn't bring about lasting peace, rather it encourages others to rise up against us!

Moe NY   April 24th, 2009 9:06 am ET

I don't think Ms. Cheney and her father need to worry, when push comes to shove President Obama will deliver, i.e. recent pirate incident for example. What exactly did you want President Obama to do at the Summit of the Americas....start a fight? Our new POTUS has class, you will not see him acting like a bully on the playground, he believes in diplomacy first and war as a last result. You republicans are fools if you think that your continuous fear mongering and lies are going to work on the american people once again...we are wise to the Republican tactics.

Serratos   April 24th, 2009 9:06 am ET

Cheney thinks that we should torture everyone instead of using diplomacy.

indevoterpa   April 24th, 2009 9:06 am ET

You know Liz really needs to wake up! We are hated (even more than ever) because we started a massive war with LIE (her father's LIE) and the rest of the world has called us out on that. I think this woman needs to go away until she knows what she is talking about. She is clueless.

Yusuf Bako   April 24th, 2009 9:05 am ET

Quite honestly, this is the most we have heard from the Cheney clan. when in power they worked to silence peoples rights, now out of office their silence is required even more. They really ought to keep their unwanted opinions to the Cheney house only. Thank You!

Bill Donahue   April 24th, 2009 9:05 am ET

Since Liz Cheney feels that the techniques used on suspects such as waterboarding was acceptable, I have a question.

Iran is holding an American Journalist as a suspected spy. North Korea is holding two American Journalists as suspected spies.

Are you saying that since the techniques we used were acceptable, that it would be acceptable for Iran and North Korea to use the same techniques on the Americans they suspect of spying?

And when we say that such techniques are acceptable, aren't we putting all American who may be taken by foreign countries in jeopardy of having our techniques used on them?

BenjaminC   April 24th, 2009 9:05 am ET

Bush and Cheney were no beacon of hope. They were an embarrassment. I hope at least Cheney is prosecuted for torturing people in our name. He should be ashamed. We're only a beacon of hope when we live by our principals, which Cheney lacks.

Greg   April 24th, 2009 9:05 am ET

Another Cheney. They are the nastiest people in this country next to Limbaugh. Classless yet they don't care.

Steve   April 24th, 2009 9:05 am ET

So Cheney's kid had no problem with what happened over the past 8 years but is now so concerned after 3 months with our new President? Can anyone name one single person who actually has an interest in what the daughter of a non-public figure has to say or thinks that she is relevant at all? Instead of rambling on about our President, she might want to start talking with her dad about what is coming down the road for him. I'd say that's a bit more important.

You know, if the media will stop talking to dolts like this, then no one has to hear them and they will just fade away.

Rob   April 24th, 2009 9:04 am ET

Dick Cheney,

Is doing all this negatives stuff because he is concerned that he will be indicted on charges steming from a possible investigation in to his part in the "Enhanced Interrogation" decision. Once again the right is trying to make the Amerian people look the other way when it comes to them committing crimes against the country.

Byron   April 24th, 2009 9:04 am ET

Liz, who gave America the "Beacon of Hope" status? America itself? We want America to be the beacon of hope to AMERICA! not the world. Fix our problems at home and stop looking outside. That's what got us in trouble in the first place. Throughout history, the grand empires have fallen when they over extended outside of their reign. America is looking too much outside and not enough inside.

And your father, boy oh boy. Hitler atleast wanted his own to gain from his actions. Your father is doing things that no one gains from, not America, not the World.

starplus   April 24th, 2009 9:03 am ET

Who really cares what the Cheney's think.

I used to have a great deal of respect for Dick Cheney until he favored torture.

I think it's time we just ignore what they have to say and move on, they had their chance to make a difference, and they blew it.

ed stahl   April 24th, 2009 9:02 am ET

I mean -what can you expect from a Cheney..the champion of failed policies.

SAF   April 24th, 2009 9:02 am ET

Here's a news flash for you: Who the hell cares what Liz Cheney (or her father) thinks!! Quit giving any importance at all to those who hold beliefs or policies that so obviously proved to be harmful in every way to America during the last administration!! All this kind of reporting does is continue the mentality of the Rush Limbaugh group who refuse to get on board with a truly progressive President!

Kara   April 24th, 2009 9:02 am ET

I wouldn't take Cheney (or his daughter's) advice here. He had a huge role in turning world support away from the United States. And his daughter is less experienced than Sarah Palin when it comes to running a government.

The truth is actions speak louder than words. Obama SHOWS the world that America is a "beacon of hope." The whole issue here is that the Republicans talked one way for 8 years and acted in another. The world is rightly skeptical of that kind of hypocrisy. Words are old now, people want action. Obama is running this show now. Let him do his job.

Steve, New York City   April 24th, 2009 9:02 am ET

Ahhh – the Cheneys. Do they have credibility with anyone?? A ruined economy, and Dick Cheney and his neo-con buddies spread fear and lies, so that we could invade Iraq . . .and for what??? $12 billion a month and thousands dead for no good reason.

Please – Dick Cheney & family – you've caused enough destruction. Maybe you can all take each other on an extended hunting trip.

Mark   April 24th, 2009 9:01 am ET

How many children of politicians disagree with their parents? This is no surprise. Neither does her comments about her father not neding Bush's approval to speak up. That's how former president Cheney ran this country for the last 8 years. When a country has economically been run into the ground as Cheney did, that weakens a country far greater than anything Obama has done. Shame on Cheney but then again, he has no conscience. If he hates Obama that much, maybe he should invite him to go quail hunting?

the dude   April 24th, 2009 9:01 am ET

...interesting that she says "forget Republican and Democrat." Seems like the same old Republican nonsense to me...just because the President behaved like a gentleman at a conference...same as I'd expect of anyone of his standing...evidently, Obama should have thrown his shoes at Ortega.....

joan 1937   April 24th, 2009 9:01 am ET

Liz Cheney had a nice job with our taxpayer money. Lets see how much she gets for retirement and if her health care is also on our tab.

Patrick, St. Louis   April 24th, 2009 9:01 am ET

It seems Liz Cheney hasn't been out of the country recently. Since 2003 I have lived all over the world, from Spain to Fiji to Australia, and I can tell you that the America of the last 8 years was not a "beacon of hope" to anyone. People regularly associate America with wars, torture, and arrogance. But since the election, people across the world see Barack Obama and the current administration as the true "beacon of hope."

Carl from MI   April 24th, 2009 9:01 am ET

Obama's a highly educated man... he's not going to say the STOOPID stuff that Dubya did to the world!!!

Liz Cheney is talking about Dubya's tough 'cowboy talk' and Obama is not going say that kind of stupid stuff to the world. We don't need a leader who uses talk 'cowboy talk'... first, it got us nowhere and second, the world hated us for it.

We now have a different President who actually uses intelligent words, who's trying to FIX the American image that's been decimated by Dubya. If Liz Cheney can't see that, she has brain damage!!

Donna   April 24th, 2009 9:00 am ET

Of course she is going to agree with Daddy. So will his wife, his other children, his grandchildren, and so on down. I just question why her opinion is deemed relevant.

gl, Pittsburgh   April 24th, 2009 9:00 am ET

think that there's a real concern. I mean, the message that we saw coming out of the last few foreign trips — I mean, forget Republican and Democrat, as an American it concerns me when I have a president that doesn't stand up and say, 'Wait a minute, you know, I'm going to defend the United States of America because we are a beacon of hope for people all around the world,'" she said.

The old saying is you kills bees with honey and just maybe this President we have today thinks that why. She is only trying to defend her father and nothing else. Your father is a war crimial and that is a fact. Most American see your father as a war crimimal.

Fitz in Texas   April 24th, 2009 9:00 am ET

I couldn't agree with you more Liz Cheney! Millions and millions of Americans agree with you and your father as well. Like 911, I believe it's not if it's going to happen, it's when will it happen.
I fear for my family and this country.

S.B. Stein E.B. NJ   April 24th, 2009 8:59 am ET

I think that after 8 years of demanding the world do as we want them to do, it is okay for them to vent a little. We also need to understand what various places really want to say and do. We can't be demanding the world do as we want all the time. We have to lead by example. This is one of the reasons why torture was such a bad idea for us to do or ever think was acceptable.

Will-South Dakota   April 24th, 2009 8:59 am ET

Interesting Cheney never stood for America while he and Bush were plundering America into debt for the last eight years.

Mark   April 24th, 2009 8:59 am ET

The same liberals and media will somehow blame Bush when the U.S. gets hit again. Just like they gave Bill the free pass big time.

johnny   April 24th, 2009 8:59 am ET

I am glad he doesn't stand up and say "We are a beacon of hope..." because after the reign of Bush/Cheny, we are NOT. Liz you need to just shut up like your dad needs to just shut up. Our president is doing the right thing. It's called accountability.

Darrell Burks   April 24th, 2009 8:58 am ET

In all respect – she is defending her Dad. Obama ran for President for change. We as Americans should be confident to be humble, admit mistakes, and still be strong at the same time. The Cheney's are irogant, evil and misguided.

Michelle in Pittsburgh   April 24th, 2009 8:58 am ET

Let's see how many liberals attack her. This website is a joke and so are the blinded people that write on here.

worriedmom   April 24th, 2009 8:57 am ET

As a American, I could agree with that he should have defended us after Ortgea degraded the U.S. I think Obama has to realize that not everyone is going to be his friend and they will take advantage of him and his so called peaceful personality. Sometimes the only way to quiet a bully is to stand up to them. Believe me it works!

lajuan   April 24th, 2009 8:57 am ET

George Bush needs to begin speaking out. He was demonized by CNN and other radical leftist but now that he out of office CNN has less handles to grab in your attacks on him. Many of us find him entirely credible.

Obama is a clear and present threat to the stability and safety of our country. It is now time for all good patriots to speak up and let the fascists who are grasping for total control over us to "go to hell". All fascists government eventually collapse in chaos and confusion. The end of America will not be any different.

Pep   April 24th, 2009 8:57 am ET

Gimme a break lady!!! Where was your father when we were supposed to be a "beacon of hope"! Shut up already, he had his chance and blew it! Sour grapes!

Ron   April 24th, 2009 8:57 am ET

Even a dumb person can see that Cheney is trying to justify what he did in the last 8 years.

Louse   April 24th, 2009 8:57 am ET

Who cares what Liz Cheney thinks?????? Or Dick Cheney for that matter. They are just Republicans who can't stand to see Obama do good.

Michael in NC   April 24th, 2009 8:57 am ET

I'm not sure we've been a beacon of hope, Liz. The last administration gave the thumbs up to torture. Torture. And now you've got all these awful men actually trying to defend those indefensible tactics.
When Obama actually listens to the leaders of other countries air their grievances against the US, he is not being weak. Listening is not weak. I'm sure Obama is just as proud of this country as I am proud to have him as my President.

Al   April 24th, 2009 8:57 am ET

A strong country, just like a strong, confident person, doesn't need to be afriad to stand up admit its mistakes, admit when he, she or it was wrong. Cintinuing to defend the indefensible is a sign that you're unwilling to learn from the mistakes of the past and are too scared of being seen as weak. It takes real strength and courage to admit wen your wrong and this country was wrong on so many things over the past 8 years.

Carolyn   April 24th, 2009 8:56 am ET

Is there some reason I'm suppose to cared what Liz Cheney thinks?

Michigan   April 24th, 2009 8:56 am ET

"The vice president thinks it's very important, when you see the country go down paths that are concerning and dangerous, and when you see the current administration making decisions that really do have the potential to make us less safe, in those circumstances I would say the vice president doesn't think there's an obligation to be silent..."

Joe Biden thinks that?? He's the vice president, after all. Cheney is the FORMER vice president.

gl, Pittsburgh   April 24th, 2009 8:56 am ET

She would be a Cheney if she didn't agree with her father. She better be prayer her father don't go to jail. Why do we care with she have to say anyway. Her father is the greatest risk of a terrorist attack.

joel anvire   April 24th, 2009 8:55 am ET

wow beacon of hope for the people of the world??? is liz Cheney mentally stable??? last time i look your dad and bush are the same people who did not defend the values of the US.
they lied to the whole world and trust me if it wasnt for obama this country is doomed. even your own dad doesnt support gay marraige...
oh yeah she s a blonde no wonder so many people around the world hates america.

DF Douglas   April 24th, 2009 8:55 am ET

Will someone tell me why we even care what Liz Chaney thinks or feels.
Will someone tell me why this womans thoughts are being broadcast by the media.

The only thing I can think of is it is the same mentality of the media and public showing any interest in giving the Octomom a reality show.
It is all a waste of the alphabet.

Maryellen   April 24th, 2009 8:55 am ET

I wish the whole family would just go away, who cares what they have to say. Liz, were you happy with your Fathers decisions over the last eight year?

JimG   April 24th, 2009 8:55 am ET

Translated from Special Republican English, "defend America" means "fill your pockets and run your mouth."

theflyonthewall   April 24th, 2009 8:54 am ET

That's probably because our President is too busy bowing and scraping and apologizing for everthing this country has done real or imagined.

Thanks, Dems, for saddling the USA with this fool.

Jonita   April 24th, 2009 8:54 am ET

Who cares what Dick Cheney's daughter Thinks?

Dave   April 24th, 2009 8:53 am ET

Well, she's entitled to her opinion, but she's wrong. I guess she didn't want her dad to get lonely there on top of Incompetence Mountain.

JE   April 24th, 2009 8:53 am ET

Uh, we really don't care what she has to say. She's only backing up what daddy said. Cheney is part of the reason Iraq went as badly as it did.

Dave   April 24th, 2009 8:53 am ET

This seems like criterion that could have been applied before Obama. We are not safer because of Cheney. We are have zero moral authority, less safety, fewer allies, and greater zeal in our enemies.

CHANGE.COM   April 24th, 2009 8:52 am ET

What's disturbing is that Cheney and cohorts are still not in jail for crimes against humanity and, most importantly, trampling on the constitution of the United States.

M   April 24th, 2009 8:51 am ET

That's right Dick get your daughter to fight your battles. I tell you one thing...the reblican machine never knows when to quit. Maybe what they should be talking about is how the "interrogation" methods used came from the SERE method that is used to train our troops on how to withstand ILLEGAL TORTURE!!! So how can you say it isn't torture when the methods were based on illegal torture methods our troops are trained to withstand?! Now it is a fair argument to say that maybe it was necessary but to say it wasn't illegal torture is just a lie!

August   April 24th, 2009 8:51 am ET

This is really simple so I will ask you the questions. How can people in other countries, both our friends and enemies, believe that Americans are the "Good Guys" when our President is telling them we are the bad guys? Is the American way of freedom and democracy the right way or the wrong way? Our President seems to think our way is wrong and socialism and terrorism is right. I disagree with his attitude and think he is making a big mistake. What do you think? The polls indicate 60% of you think he is right but perhaps the polls are not all Americans.

Brandon   April 24th, 2009 8:51 am ET

The problem is credibility. The Bush administration has shredded our credibility around the world. I can say I'm the Pope it doesn't make me Catholic. By Obama saying that we have made mistakes (especially when we have) it gives credibility to the statements when he says that America is still a leader in the free world.

flygirl   April 24th, 2009 8:51 am ET

Is this any surprise? I think the first line states all you need to know about the veracity of her claims.

"Liz Cheney, former State Department official and daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney,..."

What we see here is the normal cronyism courtesy of the Bush team.

Jaywood   April 24th, 2009 8:51 am ET

Are you serious, she is only trying to take up for her dad. What did he stand up for whe he was in office?

lou   April 24th, 2009 8:51 am ET

Who cares what ANYONE named Cheney thinks about America? I'm no fan of NObama, but I'm less of a fan of Cheney. BOTH are committed to selling out America. NObama for religious and philosophical reasons, and Cheney for naked greed. America is getting hozed and fleeced by both political parties and the people "we the people" put in power to rule over us. Since we have allowed America to turn away from God, we deserve what we're getting, and will continue to get until we repent as a nation.

Marie   April 24th, 2009 8:51 am ET

Liz needs to shut up and let the president do his job without making enemies with foriegn countries as her stupid dad did .And why don't she ask her father how many more lies are going to surface for his orders of torture and how many reports were actually falsified.Cheney is an evil vindictive man and I can't wait until ALL americans see just how evil he is.I'm so sick and tired of people saying Obama should do this or he shouldn't have done that just let him do his job...really how much worser could it get after the last eight years.Oh Liz ask your dad just how much at risk does he think he's put the country at since those torture tapes have aired for terriost to see

Scott_MICH   April 24th, 2009 8:50 am ET

Interesting considering VP Cheney spent 8 years pushing this country down the wrong path, giving President Bush skewed, poorly thought out advice, and otherwise grabbing as much personal power as possible.

Jeff W.   April 24th, 2009 8:50 am ET

The dumb apple doesn't fall far from the evil tree, huh? It amuses me when a Cheney criticizes anything given the incredible damage the Bush/Cheney team caused over 8 years. Good thing the vast majority disagree with her – just look at Obama's incredibly high approval ratings from the vast majority of americans. That's it, republicans, keep complaining about the new president. You had your chance, I'm sorry it went so badly.

Erik in Real Pennsylvania   April 24th, 2009 8:50 am ET

The Fox News cultists are claiming the President (who I don't often agree with) apologized for some American actions, or omissions, or something. It's all a little bit unclear, except for the fact that so-called conservatives are riled up.

Did I miss the apology? Not that it would be wrong for our nation to recognize a mistake and express regret, but is our President really apologizing to anyone these days? Or is this a straw man, or a solution in search of a problem?

Quotes, please. This is a serious and reasonably objective inquiry.

Mark   April 24th, 2009 8:50 am ET

She's not alone. Even the people who voted for Obama think he is making a serious mistake....one of many, in my opinion,

Tom   April 24th, 2009 8:50 am ET

Just like her father, she doesn't begin to get it. Bush and Cheney turned America into a beacon of misery rather than hope for many people in the world (including here in America itself). We need hear no more from the Cheney family. They have already "helped" more than enough.

LISA   April 24th, 2009 8:49 am ET

She sounds just as stupid as her Dad! Why is she talking?
Your Dad tortured people! Yell, thats makes us safer knowing the world hates the USA.. We've done things we're not proud of but its a new day. Doesn't make us punks to acknowledge that. I think we're stronger now knowing all branches of the military are working closely together. Something that didn't happen the previous 8 years.

James   April 24th, 2009 8:49 am ET

This the first time I ever heard the EX VP speak....Through the 8 yrs I've never heard him say a word......And now his daughter is speaking...Stop already you had your chance, go fishing, or down to the coffee shop, or to the mall, just stop!!!!

Meka   April 24th, 2009 8:49 am ET

You can not please everyone. It's about time for those who have been pleased the last eight years get a dose of medicine. I commend Obama on everything he has accomplished so far. I do not agree with everything he has done but, you will not please everyone. Question of the day: Why were all the critics silent during Bush's terms in office?

John   April 24th, 2009 8:49 am ET

Wow , breaking news: Liz Cheney supports her dad! This is another example of why the past administration was such a failure. They are good at politics and nothing else. This is nothing but empty republican nonsense. No administration in history has done more to damage our overseas, international relationships than the last one. It is insane for them to criticize anyone else!

She refers to her daddy as the "Vice President" and Bush correctly as the "Former President." I hope Cheney gets the physiological help he so clearly needs.

Jamie   April 24th, 2009 8:49 am ET

First, who cares what Liz Cheney thinks. Second, we stopped being a 'beacon of hope' a few years ago, thanks in large part to her father.

Tarheel   April 24th, 2009 8:48 am ET

What a joke?! Such tough talk from a war criminal and a thief!

thefan08   April 24th, 2009 8:48 am ET

Way do the cheneys feel the need to keep opening their mouths. your father made ths country more un-safe than anything else. so please go away and stop giving your opinion because we the people with an IQ over an hundred choose not to listen to the garbage that comes out of your mouths.

And for the idiots who keep saying bush-chenney kept us safe for 7 years with their methods and illegal behaviours, well guess what, Bill clinton kept us safe, the first bush kept us safe, i mean actually, you would have to go back to 1945 to when something of the magnitude of september 11 happened in this country. to keep this country safe, no other president or vice president had to break the law or stoop to the low level bush and chenney did. go aways chenney, its time for a change in policy and ideas, you know, ones that work.

vette78man   April 24th, 2009 8:48 am ET

And we care about her why? There is lots to be proud of about America. But there's lots we should be sorry for, and her dad brought most of it on. You're 15 minutes are up.

Karen   April 24th, 2009 8:48 am ET

Do we really care what his daughter has to say. I don't believe anything Cheney stands for was beneficial to the US, it just made us more hated. Can the risk be anymore higher than an actual attack which happened on her father's watch. A lot of good their belief did to prevent that. You all are "FOMER" for a reason. Go away, be quiet and let the elected officials do what you cowards were to arrogant to do and that is think about the PEOPLE.

WOW!   April 24th, 2009 8:47 am ET

Liz Cheney is simply a biological extension of her father's evil ways.

danel   April 24th, 2009 8:47 am ET

How exactly Cheney defended America?

Lori   April 24th, 2009 8:47 am ET

Liz Cheney needs to ask her father why didn't he stick up for gay rights and stop worrying about giving her useless opinon on President Obama? THEY(The GOP) are making the U.S. less safe by openly criticizing the President on the national stage so that the terrorist can see the weakness in America's unity against them. Just like her father, this chick needs to shut up!

Guinness   April 24th, 2009 8:47 am ET

"Beacon of Hope" ? Is she kidding? This typifies the cluelessness and provincial outlook of the previous administration.
Egad, if Obama had said "beacon of hope", he would have been laughed off the stage.

Gloria   April 24th, 2009 8:46 am ET

No one cares what either of them say.

Gary from VA   April 24th, 2009 8:46 am ET

Totally disagree with her. What do that want Obama to do to other leaders beat them up. He has been a perfect gentleman. Killing them with kindness and understanding. Empowering them of sorts. But if the need to put them in their place he will. He has the backing of the US Military. So people need to chill and not be so sensitive to every issue. Think before you act. Haven't we learned anything from this President. See what the last motor mouth got us in.

Bob   April 24th, 2009 8:46 am ET

Of course he stands up for the country! He stopped North Korea and their insane leader from getting nuclear weapons! Oh wait, he didn't.

Honestly!!!!!!   April 24th, 2009 8:46 am ET

...and who really cares what the Cheneys think? Old news...literally!

Rob   April 24th, 2009 8:45 am ET

The only one whose opinion I care less about than Dick Cheney is his daughter. Being appointed to the State Department through nepotism doesn't make you an expert.

John Magnusson   April 24th, 2009 8:44 am ET

Who cares?

MW in MD   April 24th, 2009 8:44 am ET

SO WHAT – WHO CARES? Her father is irrelevant and so is she!

Brad   April 24th, 2009 8:43 am ET

Sorry, Liz. The name Cheney is now associated with corruption, torture and war. Good luck getting any credibility with what you say.

George   April 24th, 2009 8:41 am ET

Bye BYE LIZ. It is nice to defend your father, but it would be better if you were both correct. Obama has made more off shore friends than you dad made offshore eneimies. That is quite an accomplishment. Sorry
Liz but your dad is a spoiled CEO and a disgrace to America. How can
I respect a war criminal? Can"t do it Liz. SORRY

Steve   April 24th, 2009 8:41 am ET

There's a fine line between mannered diplomacy and defending the biggest free nation on earth. Sitting back and listening to public criticism like Ortega will eventually lead to others dong the same thing.

Ren of Baltimore   April 24th, 2009 8:40 am ET

Liz,
You are too close to the evil one to give us anything but a biased look--that's all you see, all your psyche lets you see.

You've hopefully said enough about this; now, you should be able to feel you did right by your own family. Leave it at that, for your own sake.

indyred   April 24th, 2009 8:38 am ET

Who cares what the warmonger's daughter has to say?

John in Ohio   April 24th, 2009 8:38 am ET

Listen, , you and your chickenhawk daddy made the country less safe. Not Obama. Restoring our international image does not make us less safe. Adhering to the laws and principles we claim to uphold does not make us less safe.

Your daddy and Bush made the US a beacon of TORTURE for the whole world. There were people in other countries, perfectly innocent people, who were afraid to travel to the US because they could be whisked off to a secret detention facility and tortured. And they could be. And it happened, repeatedly.

If there is any justice in this world, Cheney will go to jail for war crimes.

New Yorker   April 24th, 2009 8:38 am ET

Liz Cheney is correct. The U.S. isn't perfect but is still the best country in the world and Obama is whittling away at it. Perhaps he thinks it should be more like Kenya or Indonesia.

Chris.D   April 24th, 2009 8:38 am ET

she is crazy like her father obama do stand up 4 the united states

Lou Ferrap   April 24th, 2009 8:36 am ET

The problem is we have a president who happens to be "Anti" American. Americans refused to believe this during the campaign and they still refuse to acknowledge it. Obama can fool some of the people some of the time. He can'f fool all of the people all of the time.

He's just a fraud!

Joe Smoe   April 24th, 2009 8:32 am ET

Please not another chaney, enough is enough. They had their 8 years of disaster GO AWAY PLEASE!!!!!!!!
