Palin formally unveils new legal defense fund

Palin's new legal defense fund was formally unveiled Friday.
Palin's new legal defense fund was formally unveiled Friday.

(CNN) – Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, facing a string of costly ethics complaints, formally unveiled a defense fund Friday to help pay her legal fees - now surging past the half-million dollar mark.

"For Alaskans, the time has come to end the siege on our government by political tricksters. Enough is enough. With the help of reform-minded advocates from across our nation, we will stand up for what is right," said a message on the Web site for the Alaska Fund Trust.

"Your maximum contribution of $150.00 will allow the Governor, her family, and her colleagues to retire their legal debt at no cost to Alaskans and reduce the incentive for mischief by her opponents. Together, we can help Governor Palin and future elected officials turn back the tide of overtly partisan and unnecessarily personal political attacks."

Kristan Cole, a Palin ally from Wasilla, will run the fund, which she described as "one of the most restrictive and transparent legal funds in history." The group said it plans to voluntarily release the names of donors and size of their contributions.

"We have created one of the most restrictive and transparent legal funds in history," Cole said. The group has created downloadable comparisons of the group's restrictions in comparisons with other recent political legal defense funds, including those for both Clintons and former Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens.

The former Republican vice presidential candidate continues to face a steady stream of new filings - the latest just this week, over whether she used PAC funds to travel to an anti-abortion event in Indiana.

Earlier this month, a Texas businessman launched a Web site to help defray the governor's legal costs, but Palin spokeswoman Meg Stapleton said then that the official legal defense fund could only accept money from her official fund, which had yet to launch, and encouraged Palin's supporters to direct their contributions there.

@ Chloe, who said "Why was Palin singled out by George Soros and the leftist anti-free speech and thought conspiracy, or is she the only far-right political figure with "normal everyday traditional values"?"

There's no anti-free-speach though police conspiracy. People are free to speak their minds, 'tis true. People who disagree are also free to speak their disagreement. That Palin's positions were and are consistently proven either moronic or not properly the province of government does not equate to censure. She's been free to open her mouth and insert her foot from the get-go, which she promptly and frequenlty did...and she continues to be free to do it...like she's doing right now, and will do tomorrow, and the next day, and the next day, etc. And we remain free to point it out.

Palin...and trasparency....can't go together in the same paragraph...
    let alone the same sentence!
If she did nothing wrong....there would be no complaints!
She said that in troopergate...and they found she HAD ABUSED HER POWER. So we should believe her "story" of political tricksters.....why???????
Just another try at using politics to make money...for her and her poor family!!

  6. I used to like CNN but not anymore!

Ok all you Palin lovers answer me this. Why would someone who "claims" to be so perfect and innocent of any wrong doing need to drum up contributions for a legal defense fund?.......................................( cue the crickets).

    Entitlement mentality at its best!!!!

You made the bill; you pay it.

You refused the stimulus money because you did not want Alaska burdened with having to keep up what the stimulus started, right? So why should someone else help you pay for what you started?

Capitalism? Remember that Sarah? Go bankrupt and regroup like you wanted the companies taht the federal government is helping.

Are the Democrats really that desperate? It's the democrats that are keeping Palin in the spot light. If they just shut up and left her alone, the media would walk away too.

Anyone who voted for Bush and Obama should have their voting privileges permanently revoked. They are two peas in the same pod.

"at no cost to Alaskans"??? This sounds like a threat, saying that if there are not enough individual donations that Alaskans across the board will have to pay Palin's legal bills. Another day, another deception from this ambitious incompetent woman.

So the Governor gets herself involved in legal difficulties, because she has no moral or ethical code and she expects other to pick up the tab. I hope the folks in the real America are feeling generous. Maybe Governor you can offer lap dances to Limbaugh & Hannity. Seriously Governor you are turning into the Anna Nicole of the GOP.

    Isn't she the perfect-holier-than-thou-GOPer???

Some of the comments by the GOPers her are so funny!

Democrats would LOVE to have Palin run against Obama in 2012!

What a disgrace that she asking for funds to bail her out of her debts. Why doesn't she sell the expensive clothes that she acquired with GOP funds for her and all her family during the campaign.

What about the money she took for per diem allowance while living at home. This woman has no shame.

She should be booted out of Alaska and everywhere else. She is a phony ambitious woman and to top it all not even very smart or well educated.

A costly string of ethics complaints, and this woman wants to run for President? She is truly out of her mind. She has no ethics, therefore she should not hold ANY kind of public office, period.

BTW Sarah, a small town in Alaska is sinking into the ocean, what are you going to do to help these people? Oh I forgot, climate change is made up by the "liberal" media. You need to stay in Alaska and do your job, which is govern your state and stop thinking about a higher office as you are not and never will be qualified for anything more than you currently have. It is amazing that she even got elected as Governor.

You keep up the good work, Sarah. You aer what we need in America, a person who sees the evil and does not mind stepping up to the plate. I am proud of you. The problem with those who are against you are the ones who do not count in the long run and also the ones who listen to the trashy CNN News reporters. They love to hide behind doodrs and trash who they do not like and the ones who pay them for doing it. Those people start with a big D. eed I say more?

"mischief by her opponents"??? Give me a break!
This woman still regards herself as above any law.....ala Dick Cheney!
And this fund is so that 'Alaskans don't have to pay'????
So if she dod not have the fund she would make the state of Alaska pay for her defense??

Take note Alaskans: Sarah Palin would make YOU pay for her legal defense.....her quotes smack of the exact same things Rod Blago said!! Look where he is now.

This is such a joke coming from the Palin team. The only more Un-American individuals I can think of are Bush, Cheney, Rove, Rumsfeld, Rice, Wolfowitz, and Boener.

This is unbeliveable trash and should be thrown out with the rest of the garbage. All of these people are criminals, traitors, and should be treated as such.
