Obama: Swine flu outbreak cause for 'concern,' not 'alarm'

WASHINGTON (CNN) - President Barack Obama said Monday that the swine flu outbreak is a "cause for concern and requires a heightened state of alert," but is not a "cause for alarm."

He added that the federal government is "closely monitoring" emerging cases and had declared a public health emergency as a "precautionary tool to ensure that we have the resources we need at our disposal to respond quickly and effectively."

The president said he is receiving regular briefings on the outbreak, and that Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano will provide regular updates
to the public.

Obama made his remarks during a speech to the National Academy of Sciences.

I'm just suprised I haven't heard any GOPers claim that it's all a vast conspiracy to justify the $1M of "pork" to research the public health effects of massive pig odor from pig farms. Uh oh...pig's out of the bag...

Okay, I'll stop begging on this board and go back to job searching.. been searching for 9 months...crazy.. people... they look at your skills and want to take advantage of you and ask you to work for $2.00 an hour.

What on earth makes you guys think that swine flu comes from Mexico?? We've had periodic outbreaks of it here since at least 1976, it is a good thing to know your histort before you start talking about something you know nothing about.

In this case there were 86 deaths in Mexico prior to the first case in the US... don't know where it came from however... it seems this particular outbreak started there. Or at least common sense would dictate.

The idea that illegal immigrants are bringing swine flu into the U.S. sounds absolutely stupid. As we all should know, flu is spread from person to person contact. I'm thinking a lot of these outbreaks if you will, are caused by people traveling to a variety of different places and countries and coming into contact with someone who has this virus. Not necessarily illegals. I will say this, most of us who work everyday know that there are people that come to work coughing up a lung almost but still they come to the office and spread germs around. The best thing that everyone can do is wash their hands, if you are sick in some way, STAY HOME and try to keep it to yourself. Remember this is a virus, you can't kill it with a shot, you can only diminish the symptoms.

No need to worry. Obama will sit down with the swine flu virus and talk to it without preconditions and then maybe bow to it and send it money.

We'll be fine SUPERPRESIDENT is on the job...

Money for Pandemic Flu was deleted from the Recovery Act. Guess by whom... Republican Senator Collins.

Now would be a great time to have a HHS Secretary, you think?

@ MIssissippi Mike, who said "Illegal immigrants from Mexico brought this disease to our country "

Proof? Oh, that's right, you guys don't concern yourselves with such mundane things as facts or evidence. It could just as easily have been an American citizen/tourist who brought it back, or, shocker an American citizen who is trading guns or helping the drug trade, or just someone, anyone, who came to visit family or friends after being in Mexico. Or it could've been one of your Minutemen vigilante militia-wannabes who was busy patroling the border in hopes of shooting someone, anyone brown. Could've been someone from Amsterdam who was on vacation tour to Mexico then America then Canada or something. Your insistence on tying it to "illegals" DOES in fact reveal your racism...like it or not.

I have just obtained top secret documents that prove that this variant of swine flu was created in laboratories under the direction of Obama administration. Using tax payers dollars, they has funded left wing extremist from several liberal, socialist colleges and universities across the United States.

This particular variant targets ignorance, blind faith and the under educated.

Leveraging what hackers have done for decades, the administration has been able to digitize the virus and target it direct towards the most vulnerable; those who watch Fox News and Rush Limbaugh’s listeners.

Estimates show that more than 9 of 10 right wing extremist will contract the virus and for 7 of 10 it will be fatal.

So it only took three posts for someone to mention Bush. Unbelievable. I support Obama and want his other supporters to quit getting hung up on the past. Bush is gone. Stop talking about him.
