Limbaugh did concede the downside of Specter's defection.

(CNN) - Conservative host Rush Limbaugh said Tuesday he isn't sorry to see Arlen Specter leave the GOP - and that many Republicans wish the Pennsylvania senator would take a few others with him when he goes.

"A lot of people say, 'Well, Specter, take [Sen. John] McCain with you. And his daughter [Meghan]. Take McCain and his daughter with you if you're gonna..." he told listeners, dissolving in laughter.

".....It's ultimately good. You're weeding out people who aren't really Republicans," he said.

Limbaugh did concede the downside of Specter's defection. "It makes the Senate essentially as big a slam dunk for Obama and the Democrats as the House of Representatives already is," he said.

Earlier this month, Specter said Limbaugh did have a tendency to make "provocative" statements, but told radio host Howard Stern he didn't have a problem with the conservative talker. "Do I like Limbaugh?... yeah, I like him," he said then.

UPDATE: Late Tuesday afternoon, Meghan McCain fired back on Twitter. "RED TIL I'M DEAD BABY!!! I love the republican party enough to give it constructive criticism, I love my party and sure as hell not leavin!"

Chubby is always bragging about having twenty million regular listeners and paints himself as the quasi head of "his Republican" party. The party of hate, fear and division. Those folks may find that when the next national election comes around that may be all the votes they get. Twenty million will not be enough to unseat President Obama or any other Democratic leader. Thank you very much Mr. Lamebrain for that contribution! Nice to see that you have also let Mr. Steele weigh in on this in his own inept way.

So Limbaugh actually didn't say to take McCain...he said "other" people are saying it and he found humor while discussing this, as it relates to Specter switching parties.

But CNN paints it as Limbaugh making a flat statement to Specter to take McCain. Is it any surprise that CNN's ratings are in the toilet?

Rush, when are you going to run for a spot in government? Let the people decide if you are or aren't.

Mike O'Brien   April 28th, 2009 3:49 pm ET

Maybe, Rush Limbaugh is 'right' on this one. However, maybe Megan McCain is right to.. Megan McCain said on the cable tv show 'The View' that Dick Cheney, Karl Rove, Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulter should all "just go away" and leave us alone. Maybe, Rush.., you should go, too. I have lost all faith in the Republican Party and so has Senator Arlen Specter and others. There will be more to defect.., they see the writing on the wall for the 'present' Republican Party. The Republican Party should get rid of the dead wood in the party and look forward and toward the future, not looking back or backwards. It would be nice to have some new faces with fresh new ideas and rebuilting the Republican Party. Mike in Montana

Chris (SC)   April 28th, 2009 3:48 pm ET

These sorts of comments are exactly the reason the republican party is so small. If you want to be a fringe party with regional domination but no chance at the federal level fine by me.

Just don't complain when you don't get things the way you want them. Its pretty simple, if only 20% of the people believe the same things as you how on earth could you expect to get what you want done?

Rush is in TimeOut   April 28th, 2009 3:48 pm ET

Don't need your comments Rush .... sorry you feel left out and irrelevant ... get use to it.

Tim, Seattle   April 28th, 2009 3:48 pm ET

And the republican implosion reached its tipping point.
The party of 'NO' is being ignored and rejected.
With Al Franken, dont we now have 60 votes?
I guess the GOP shhould have said Yes at least once.
Well, if all you are going to be is negative and say No, eventually no one will listen to you any more...sad...but true

Cleaning up after W   April 28th, 2009 3:48 pm ET

Specter's not enough of an extremist for the Wizard of Oxy. How many more flashing red lights do the remaining moderate Republicans need to realize that your party has been taken from you by extremists?

Bev - NYC   April 28th, 2009 3:48 pm ET

Heir Rush has spoken resistence is futile, you must be one with the Borg or else. Is it me or has the Republican party just totally gone and embraced the crazy. Just when I think the GOP can't get any lower Steele, Rush ,Hannity and Beck can find room to go lower. Enjoy the wilderness boys!!!

Lila   April 28th, 2009 3:48 pm ET

Eventually, some forward looking Republican will have to sound the alarm that unless the party takes a close introspective look at itself and how they are perceived by the nation as a whole not neo conservative iconoclasts they will become shrill and marginal as a political party. Arlen's defection is symbolic of real divisive fissures within the Republican Party. It's a poor rat that has only one hole. You can't be a moderate in today's Republican Party.

Patrick - Indianapolis   April 28th, 2009 3:47 pm ET

One could possibly imagine that Rush is really a Democrat hell-bent on bringing the GOP down to a complete state of irrelevance. Rush, If you go around kicking everyone out of your party, it will be a lonely party, indeed. Maybe you better open up to other peoples ideas else you will find yourself in complete isolation. Maybe thats what you really want? You'll get your wish.

How many young Republicans do any of us know? (Not including those in the south who just simply don't know any better)

Political Actor   April 28th, 2009 3:47 pm ET

This is why Limbaugh is an entertainer, not a politician. Much as it would be entertaining to have the Republican presidential candidate switch parties a few months after his loss (shades of Joe Lieberman!), and bring Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe along with him, giving Democrats 63 votes once Al Franken is sworn in, this has to be giving Michael Steele a migraine. His tent has already shrunk too small to exert any influence on the legislative process, and Limbaugh is declaring it a good thing to get even smaller? It won't be too much longer before Limbaugh is thrown out from Glenn Beck's Republican Party for insufficient insanity, leaving Beck all by himself.

Limbaugh's not a real Republican. The late Sen John Heinz was a real Reublican. Limbaugh's nothing but a right wing, drug addicted talk show host. He and his propaganda following crowd need to butt out of issues that are beyond them. People like Limbaugh, Santorum and Coulter are ruining my party! I'm a Pennsylvania Republican and will be voting for Arlen Specter for Democratic Senator.

George   April 28th, 2009 3:43 pm ET

Atta boy Rush!!!!! Yes please bring Meghan McCain with you. She is too good to be a republican. Hey Mr. McCain, now is your chance. Rush doesn't want you anymore. Join the winning team. Soon all that will be left is Rush, Sarah, and Mr. Steele. Oh yes Joe the Plunger too.
Cute party!!!!!!!!!!!!

Kevin B   April 28th, 2009 3:43 pm ET

Mr Limbaugh is the biggest asset the democrats can ask for. He is truly the gift that keeps on giving.

As long as the millionaire radio talk show "entertainers" run the GOP's national agenda, they will continue to loose the support of thinking americans.

The GOP has degenrated into name calling and public temper tantrums and has turned the stomachs of middle of the road americans.

Good move Mr Spector !!

Marty, Grand Rapids   April 28th, 2009 3:43 pm ET

I'm a die hard republican, and even I know Rush needs to go.

Jim   April 28th, 2009 3:42 pm ET

This just goes to show that had McCain won the election, Limbaugh would have been praying for McCain to die of old age as quickly as possible to make Palin the President. I believe it's safe to say everyone in the Conservative base felt the exact same way.

And Limbaugh's comment about "weeding out people who aren't realy Republican". If that's not a fascist statement, along with his other regular statements, I don't know what is.

Billy   April 28th, 2009 3:40 pm ET

Yes, please keep pushing all the moderates out of the Republican Party so they can become even more insignificant than they are.

Melissa   April 28th, 2009 3:40 pm ET

The Republicans need to boot Limbaugh from the party for its own good.

andrea   April 28th, 2009 3:40 pm ET

Yeah, and you Rush, you should go away too, far, far away, and take all your right wing nuts with you, Palin, Steele, Coulter well you know who they are. Good bye.

carolina   April 28th, 2009 3:40 pm ET

Hurrah for Specter!!!!!!!!

nick   April 28th, 2009 3:39 pm ET

I have to give Rush Limburgh credit, he admits he wants no one in the Republican Party that does not see things exactly as he does. I wonder how many remaining Rep. Senators feel the same way, and will support Rush´s comments, or if they will exhibit some manhood and let him know that he is doing a great deal of harm to the party. If they keep quiet on this matter, The GOP will no longer be the minority party , but the very very, minority party. I think the rest of us shoud thank both Mr Limbough and Mr. Steele. They are the real supporters of the Democratic Party. The Democrats can´t buy this kind of publicity.

=============================================================

If he does that, there would only be, what??.......like 5 or 6 Repubs left in the Senate (LOL).

......and I thought that Michael Steele sounded like a spurned ex-lover; Limbaugh's gonna lose his mind over the next couple of weeks!!!

Fitz in Texas   April 28th, 2009 3:38 pm ET

I don't always agree with Mr. Limbaugh, but he sure has my vote on this one.

Irma in North Carolina   April 28th, 2009 3:37 pm ET

Whats the matter Rush would not the senator listen to you. So why dont you like Mccain and his daughter did they say something to hurt your feelings. I suppose you are going to keep Sarah for your own personal use. Rush cant you see there arent very many republicans left in the usa.

HJA   April 28th, 2009 3:37 pm ET

Arlen Specter, John McCain, Meghan McCain. Wow! These three have more common sense and decency than the rest of the GOP put together. And the count (3) equals the number of brain cells Rush has.

Doug, New Jersey   April 28th, 2009 3:37 pm ET

Rush is right, republicans must uphold their standards of decency, respect, integrity, morals, values and personal responsibility. We should not delute the good that the right represents just to get RINOs elected in evil blue areas.

It doesn't matter who your god is, if you feel confident in facing him with the way you have conducted your life then you are a republican, if you fear a god based on a selfish, taker, hateful life you have lived, then you can go join the party for you as Specter has done.

Zach K   April 28th, 2009 3:37 pm ET

I'd like to comment on Limbaugh, but if I go further, I will lose intelligence by listening to his garbage.

Lee-- Dallas, TX   April 28th, 2009 3:37 pm ET

And I think this could be arranged...

The GOPers are getting this all wrong... Everyone who's watched Specter over his career knows that he is no liberal and for them to imply as much is the very reason why their party is shrinking by the day.

Here we go again...

Mike D. in San Diego   April 28th, 2009 3:36 pm ET

"…..It's ultimately good. You're weeding out people who aren't really Republicans," he said.

Ultimately good huh Rush? Your Republcian party numbers are dwindling and you're headed the way of the dodo bird...and you think this is good. This sounds like the logic of thrice divorced drug addict who is supposed to be the voice of the party of inflexible morals.

Hope They NEVER Wake Up   April 28th, 2009 3:36 pm ET

Yep, the Democratic Senator from the now BLUE Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is not a "True Republican", and neither are Senator McCain, his daughter, Michael Steele, or anyone else who has ever questioned the mighty King Limbaugh. The King should continue to purge HIS party of all those rediculously centrist and moderate heathens. Soon, the Rupublican Party will only consist of The King, Jindal, Palin, the employees of Fox News, and a few inbred rednecks who have more dogs than teeth. BWAH HAH HAH HAH HAH!!!!!

Jane   April 28th, 2009 3:36 pm ET

Gee Rush, If you are the shining example of a true Republican – I will stay as far away from the Republican Party. What arrogance & narrow vision!

Kurt from Canada   April 28th, 2009 3:35 pm ET

Right. And the end result of your wishes will be an ideologically pure (and extreme) party on the political fringes holding on to the remenants of power on tiny enclaves. Keep up the good work Rush.

Hmmm, I almost have wonder if Limbaugh is a Democratic double agent considering the damage he's manage to do to the reputation of his party.

Like I wrote earlier, please keep up the good work Rush.

Tom. MN   April 28th, 2009 3:35 pm ET

That's right Spector. Don't let the Bigots, hypocrites, racists, wingnuts,

To all the republicans out there, this is your defacto leader? No wonder republicans are bailing at the speed of light. Here in Pennsylvania, we democrats have always voted to keep Arlen Specter. He is an astute politician, who has always voted with his heart not his party. We are proud of him in Pennsylvania. We will not let the republicans spread their hate, lies, racism, and religious rhetoric within our borders. We welcome all republicans who would like to join the party of change, ideas, equality, morality, and just good plain American citizens.

Not surprised at all by Limbaugh's condesending, rude tone, referring to the two senators by last name only. And dragging John McCain's daughter into the mud is so like Limbaugh. This 'string 'em up' crap coming from the RNC its conservative mouthpiece has got to stop.

I Am The Not-So-Powerful Wizard of Rush   April 28th, 2009 3:30 pm ET

EW   April 28th, 2009 3:30 pm ET

Limbaugh is emblematic of the very reason so many people now disavow the Republican party. There is no place for anyone who holds moderate views outside of those held by their extremist clown so-called leaders. The party is total joke. It is now more akin to a cult. Specter simply recognizes what everyone else finally figured out the last few years.

Linda, NY   April 28th, 2009 3:30 pm ET

CNN–this guy is a radio entertainer, why do you insist on covering him as if he were a statesman or even an intelligent spokesman?

sbp   April 28th, 2009 3:29 pm ET

Rush's ideal Republican Party - Just him, alone in a room. Because if you disagree with him on ANY matter, including how you feel about cauliflower, you're the enemy. Does it ever occur to him that the ever shrinking group of people he considers "real" Republicans are really a fringe cult of fanatics? Of course not.

Arin   April 28th, 2009 3:29 pm ET

Limbaugh, Limbaugh.... obese, drug addict and now a cry baby? "Waaah waaah... take McCain with you?" Thank God you are the leader of the Republican party. Let the stupid follow you.

Little Miss Sunshine   April 28th, 2009 3:28 pm ET

Of course Limbaugh doesn't like Specter. Specter has a mind of his own and doesn't listen or pay attention to a word that blowhard Limbaugh says. Limbaugh only likes mindless Republican robots who do whatever he says.

Tulsa   April 28th, 2009 3:28 pm ET

Yes! By all means listen to Rush! He's going to "save" the Republican party by getting rid of all those pesky moderates.

Then you'll be left with the 10-20% who are "real" Republicans. You're going to win a LOT of elections with that number!

How dumb are you Republicans? You actually listen to THIS guy?
You deserve to be on histories scrap heap.

Mardene Pemberton   April 28th, 2009 3:27 pm ET

It's okay, Rush. Ever since you pledged your soul to him, Satan will never desert you. Never. His commitment to you is eternal. Bring marshmallows.

Brent   April 28th, 2009 3:27 pm ET

I see Limbaugh had to emerge from his drug induced stupor so that he could waddle in front of a camera and get some attention.
