I'd give President Obama a B+ for his handling of the economy so far. He essentially appears to be moving in the right direction, but the banking plan was slow to get off the ground and it's unclear if it will work.

A+ Thumbs up for Obama-I have noticed that since Bush has left office that the stock market has done much better under the Obama administration. People have trust in him!!!

Brian   April 29th, 2009 10:41 pm ET

A+ Finally we have a president that has an outstanding intellect. The job of being President of the USA demands a person with outstanding intelligence and abilities. I spent my whole career working for one of America's top aerospace corporations and never did have a CEO with this kind of talent. It took a C student two terms to get us into this gigantic mess, let's hope that an A+ student can dig us out of it. We must be patient it will take a lot of time and effort.

For once, I agree with David Gergen. Wow.

Debby   April 29th, 2009 10:18 pm ET

Obama deserves a D for the economy. Too much bailout, and he is scaring away all investors. Where does Gergen pull out the B+ . How does he figure Obama is going in the right direction when our taxes to pay for all this will be sky high come next year.

Given the current administration's inheritance of simultaneous unsurmountable barriers, major obstacles, and enormous problems in all directions that were all left by a purely incapable leader backed by strings of hypocrisy and egoistic conservatives, this country is no doubt very fortunate and should be extremely grateful that a man of courage, strength, integrity, extraordinary talents, humility, and briliance is in the leadership chair right now. Otherwise, we would have been now the hate of the entire world and in the deepest of trouble a million times than where we are right now. This man walks the talk as he is not only the most effective communicator, a foremost listener, but a man of actions and sensibility. There is no one in the nation right now whose hands we can truly trust the country @ these times except for the curent president. I am most confident in his leadership, decisions, and strategies than any other past presidents in my life. He is fundamentally the person we need right now @ this time and for what he has done already magnificently and successfully accomplished on his 1st 100 days that noboby else could have ever done or have done before, he doesn't only deserve a grade of A+ but that would not even be justified.

Barack Obama had the greatest challenge coming into office of any president in recent history. Because of the actions of this administration, the economy is showing signs of recovery. Companies are starting to report profits. It takes time for unemployment figures to be reduced, because businesses like to see a few quarters of sustained profits before rehiring, but things will gradually improve.

mjm   April 29th, 2009 10:08 pm ET

Wow...A "B+". That should help some of you find a job and make ends meet.

It's amazing that he can score a B+ on the economy. If I spent 2 times more than I make for 1 year I would be broke....and a Democrat.

Talk is cheap until Obama finds a way to tax it.

Luis A Jimenez   April 29th, 2009 10:08 pm ET

I think that Mr. Obama did a great job chosing his gabinet , going one by one , their experience , this is THE DREAM TEAM !!!!!!!!!!!!

Clue of Norway   April 29th, 2009 10:07 pm ET

A definite "A"
Pres. B. Obama is simply the best American President in modern history.
Wake up, America! – I beg of You: “To the benefit of the USA and for the sake of mankind please NEVER, EVER AGAIN elect an Republican Administration!” Perhaps the rest of the World will take You seriously again and respect and admire You as we once used to…

Evelyn   April 29th, 2009 10:06 pm ET

I give Preaident Obama an A – I think he is doing what he believes what is best for the country.

Jeff   April 29th, 2009 10:04 pm ET

The economic crisis that Obama is having to solve was initiated by the Clinton administration. A New York times article in 1997 indicated that the Clinton administration was pushing for less than par credit seekers to have access to credit to purchase homes. It all started back then so hopefully President Obama takes little advice from previous administrations and creates a uniquely President Obama economic plan, that works.

Douglas S   April 29th, 2009 10:04 pm ET

Unable to find where to vote but economy is not good yet, but He is trowing more wood to the fire, how can we fix economy by spending more money, it doesn't make sense. It doesn't take much to see this, but America still blinded by the charm of one intelligent man

sunnydelight555   April 29th, 2009 10:02 pm ET

I give him a D- for the economy. Too many good people are still losing their jobs.

lazysnake   April 29th, 2009 10:00 pm ET

B+ – Based on what accomplishments? Putting us into huge debt.

J.P.   April 29th, 2009 9:57 pm ET

Thank you David Rodham Gergen. You can now get back to the business of permanently keeping your lips stuck to the behind of whatever liberal is in the highest position of power. Oh look, this time it's Barry. Please have your lips surgically removed from Hillary's wide load butt and attach it to Barry's skinny Kenyan butt. Oh, that's right... "he was born in Hawaii." My mistake.

Olumuyiwa A, Fatodu   April 29th, 2009 9:54 pm ET

Only the Lord gives a Country the Leader they deserve. I will continue to pray for his success and the success of this great country. The Lord will use him to bring this economy out from under!! Amen!!

Dennis Rector   April 29th, 2009 9:54 pm ET

A+ for Hillary. We feel more confident that the United States can be 'friend and ally' in the world that we are all afloat in, with the President "raising the water level' and the creation of bonds of hope and trust.. working and taking action together.

nope   April 29th, 2009 9:47 pm ET

I don't know even know why reporters at Obama's press conferences even bother taking notes when they can just get a copy of his teleprompter transcript. I give Obama an A for his reading skills.

Elaine Roddy   April 29th, 2009 9:47 pm ET

What about "the least of these" that Obama spoke of during the campaign? Apparently they no longer matter.

I find it hypocritical that Obama does not want see the Bush administration punished for torture & war crimes; but is too willing to see the poor, the disadvantaged punished for the crime of wanting to own their home by the loss of that home, their pets, wellbeing, everything. He aids the lenders that preyed on these unaware folks.

The credit made available by "bailout" funds is no help to people whose credit is ruined by a foreclosure. And Isn't too much credit partially responsible for the mess we are now in?

I worked hard for obama's election. I am very disappointed & angry.

This is not Change, it "more of the same".

indie11   April 29th, 2009 9:46 pm ET

I'm just glad enough people voted for the smart guy this time.
We are in a ridiculously awful situation as a result of the 8 yr debacle that far surpassed my expectations for failure and long lasting damage. Watching him actually think while answering 4 part questions in totality instead of blurting out propaganda "ex. freedom is on the march" is so refreshing I can't express my relief.

The last prez I saw do that was JFK who was actually killed before I was born but I watched the old b/w tapes and could actually see his brilliant mind working as the question was asked instead of spitting out a pre-conceived answer that at times did not even answer the question(Hi George!hey thanks for laying low I see you can learn from your father even now)

Mr. & Mrs.Solomon &Debra Feleke   April 29th, 2009 9:46 pm ET

President Obama makes me so proud. He is keeping his campaign promises for the most part. It's not easy to run this country in the shape that it's in right now. I give him an A because he's doing a great job dealing with multiple issues. No president has come out and spoken to the people like he does. He is truly an amazing person.

Give the guy a break. 100 days to fix the economy, the financial crisis, the wars, the auto industry, the pandemic, and what else?? For all we ask from this President, he has to be a genius or a God! Remember he is human. Give him time, change is here to stay!!!

President Obama is working hard for our country and I commend him on his efforts, particularly when confronted with so many different issues all occuring at the same time. He is the right man for this job – temperment, thoughtfullness, intelligence and pride in country.

karenbeasley   April 29th, 2009 9:36 pm ET

CNN is right, it was a grand performance. All the questions were softball except one from Jake Trapper. The NYT reporter asked if he was "enchanted", give me a break.

M Nehrenz   April 29th, 2009 9:36 pm ET

The President did a great job tonight! A without a doubt. Give the man some credit, look what he walked in to! I look forward to see how he does in the next 3 years and 9 months, but I have every confidence he will be the catalyst for the change this nation needs! We don't have to agree on everything he says and does, but face it people, he is doing a good job and I bet he has no trouble sleeping at night. He is doing his best to represent everyone-even those who don't agree with him. But that is what a democracy is about right? CNN however is another story-what was up with the CNN reporter and that really lame question? We expect more of CNN! You should represent us with your questions, not the network. It also would have been nice if you had held the questions during the press conference. I was watching, not answering questions. As for how the media is handling coverage of the administration-have you watched any of your coverage? It appears you are mostly still interested in creating panic in whatever is front and center at the moment. The media in this country is incredibly disappointing. Your created him, you helped put him in office and the coverage is still slanted to whatever you want it to be at the moment. Shame on all of you.

Vicky   April 29th, 2009 9:35 pm ET

He may not can walk on water but he sure is trying, never have we had a President with the energy and stamina to do what he promised the people he would do,even if he can not accomplish everything he promised, it is refreshing how he gives the people a new perspective on life, and hope for the future, not just for the working people, and the corporations but also our children their future and the futures of many generations to come if we have no hope we have no future, thank you President Obama for a new look on our futures, to figure out the problems together as we face then daily and solve them together. You are doing a great job,we the people appreciate you , your family and all the efforts you have made to set America back to be the greatest richest nation in the world. She has stumbled but you have caught her before she fell.

In the years that I've voted, I have NEVER seen a President take on, travel and TRULY put His efforts into making things better for many of us! He is TRULY involved and doing things to make it better, not just sitting back to let the Senate or House do the work for him!

Maria C. Milla   April 29th, 2009 9:31 pm ET

In the past six years, the banking system has had no regulation whatsoever and there was a lot of wrongdoing. President Obama team has been cautious checking each bank. Are they mistaken for it?
The Republican party in power at the time is the guilty one; now they show no human feelings for people in economic stress and their opposition has isolated them more. Today only 21% of Americans still considerer themselves Republicans! They are ashamed of their party. My father was a Republican party supporter but that party is not what it used to be

Pres. Obama came into Office when economic crisis has engolfed the entire nation. This crisis was the blunder of the past abuse of power and poor management. But pres. Obama has given us hope that America will be America again both home and abroad. He is doing a magnificent job in a multi-tasking way. My message to the republicans who are in the business of giving the present administration hard time is to be optimistic, and if America is good today it is good for both republicans and democrats. So they should forget self and status and come together to restore America. Patriotism is not words of mouth it is by words and deeds.

Joan C. Robuck   April 29th, 2009 9:24 pm ET

I give President Obama an A+ tonight on his press conference! I also give him an A+ on his first 100 days in office! What a mess he walked into; and to take it all and deal with it in the intelligent way he does is amazing! I saw him slowly grow thoughout the convention to be presidential and he continues to grow as President of the United States. Now if our country can move and get back to basics along with him I think we will be a much greater country with our basic values intact.

Giving President Obama a Grade of B+ yet indicating that it "appears" that he is moving in the right direction seems strange. If the direction and/or outcomes are unclear only and average grade should be given.President Obama has done a good job of doing something. My only concern is that a good grade on the economy can only be given when national deficits become surpluses, economic growth rates are greater than 2% and we are no longer contributing to the national debt. Then and only then should the President receive a high grade on his handling of the economy.

laCNNviewer   April 29th, 2009 9:22 pm ET

If the nosayers will just leave him alone, imagine what he can do. What scares me about Obama is his ideas on health care seemed to model rationed health care like in Canada which doesnt work as they sneak now here to get what they cannot get there or are refused.
As someone disabled,(I have an inoperatable brain tumor) I know of several more than I have fingers who are also on disablity and clearly are not disabled and brag as to how they did it, this needs to change and can save a lot of money for the country. It is things like this that must be reviewed rather than ration healthcare to those who truely need it.

Richard Prokopec   April 29th, 2009 9:19 pm ET

You've got to be kidding on trying to compare or grade the 1st 100 days of this President to any other president. It's unprecedented in the issues this President of the USA is facing. COME ON! Get back to what you do best. Report news!

Joyce Jacoby   April 29th, 2009 9:19 pm ET

President Obama was articulate and honest. On the issue of working with the Republicans since they seem to have the attitude that its their way or the highway I say if the President can get his agendas passed without their support he should do so. I was appauled that the Republican party stuck with their outdated imovable ideologes in the face of this economic crisis. Which is just another reason why this party is soon to be on the endangered list. If the Republican Party has any sense of self preservation they will do what is best for the country and support the president. Otherwise they should prepare to be extinct.

cj Cervantez   April 29th, 2009 9:19 pm ET

I guess when his teleprompter is working effectively, he appears to look presidential...I believe he's making too many appearances...can we remind him that he won, and this is not American Idol...he can stop the "performance."

Charles   April 29th, 2009 9:19 pm ET

I gave President Obama a grade of A, despite the daily attacks of Republicans and their efforts to sabatage everything the President does. Had the Republicans been working with the president he would earned a grade of A+. The Republicans are doing everything they can bring about failure in these United States. They are a really pathetic bunch.

Joy Sieminski   April 29th, 2009 9:18 pm ET

He is an A President with an A performance but struggkling with a B- Congress and a media that just woke up from a long sleep on Bush's watch!

Syble C   April 29th, 2009 9:18 pm ET

I think President Obama is doing great with the hand he has been dealt. We are in a better position that we were in when he took office. You must understand that the Bush Administration really screwed up our nation's economy that effected the entire globe. It is going to be a gradual turn around, but I believe it will turn around. I am grateful that President Obama is the one who is handling this unstable situation and given the time and effort, we will come out of this. It's a shame that the GOP will not help in the process and will look bad when we do come out of this. They will be known as the party that did absolutely nothing to help our country get out of this debacle that President Obama inherited. No wonder the GOP is falling apart. YOU LOST! GET OVER IT. Let's work together to get our country back on top!!!

wmwalsh   April 29th, 2009 9:17 pm ET

I would only give the President a C rating on his job performance. I am not convinced that all this government spending is going to improve the economy. Also I believe that ultimately taxes will go up because the government is going to need the revenue to pay for this spending.
The President is very articulate and speaks very well; however that is "form " and not "substance". I am interested in the substance.

Jane Walter   April 29th, 2009 9:17 pm ET

President Obama deserves an A+ for all that is coming at him. I have never been more proud of my president than I am today. Who else on this Earth could communicate so eloquently to our people in the United States and to the world. Wow! a long time coming! We've arrived in time!

Ralph & Rotha Wheeler   April 29th, 2009 9:17 pm ET

He is the man who earns our highest respect. He was dealt a bad hand and it will take a brillant man, like Pres. Obama to help us get out of the mess he inherited.

Joy Doyle   April 29th, 2009 9:17 pm ET

I love his since of humor with such a tuff job the GOP and the Bush bunch left him to deal with. I myself give him a A but I would like to see what he suggest we whom need affordable heath insurance meanwhile while we wait for him to fight the lobbyist and other combative bunch from keeping this from happening. I need heath care and I can't afford much more thin $100 per month. I can't qualify for most insurance for I have pre existing condition. I am not happy with the goverment seems to have no solutions for me at this time. I agree with most of what he is doing just wish to see him get tuff with insurance companies. Thanks Joy Reno NV

A...Our President rocks and is trying to fix a Republican mess

Tony   April 29th, 2009 9:16 pm ET

I've been searching for some time here on CNN as suggested tonight live on CNN's broadcast - trying to find exactly WHERE to "grade" the president on his news conference. I keep hearing to go here and grade, but I cannot find the link for the life of me. Please make this more obvious when we arrive at CNN.com.

Michael Styx   April 29th, 2009 9:16 pm ET

Yeah.. he's doing great things with the banking.. tell my sister that since her husband lost his job in Aug. Hes alot of talk and BS and I watch you and Fox and it is no wonder you guys traik in ratings cause you all are one sided. You all are a bunch of jokes.. try giving and telling the full story.

Cathy Lynch   April 29th, 2009 9:16 pm ET

I think that the President is doing a great job. He has alot to handle in a very short period of time. Great speaker- you actly understand what he is saying. I think we have the right man for the job. Keep up the good work.

Terrence Myles   April 29th, 2009 9:16 pm ET

In December of last year, the stock indices were on a study decline. Markets were on the verge of collapse.

Now, the markets seem to show signs of recover even in this short period of time.

I would give an A .

I think obama did well on his news conference

meg matz   April 29th, 2009 9:15 pm ET

A grade

Mary Judith Conklin   April 29th, 2009 9:15 pm ET

I'd give him an A+. He walked into a country in severe recession with banks failing and car manufacturers going belly up. Eight years of crooked laissez-faire Republican politics (oh, you'd prefer to call it supply-side economics?) shipped jobs overseas, displacing workers who were one paycheck away from ending up on the dole. I live in Danville, VA, and the entire Southside of VA had factories toppling over like a house of cards near a fan.

The only problem with total Democratic victory in Washington and in states like VA and NC is that legislators feel they have a mandate, or at least a free pass, to raise cigarette taxes by a dollar on disenfranchised people.

I'm a female who has smoked for 41 years. Short of funds the other day, I discovered that Blackberry mini-cigars, 20 to a pack iike cigarettes, cost only $1.88, tax included. The cheapest cigarettes at the cheapest stores here, and believe me I've researched this, are going for about $2.80. Higher brands and higher stores can run over $4.

For the time being, just call me Groucho.

These same Democrats are buzzing about legalizing marijuana. Please give smokers a break. We can throw you out of office next time. Remember that.

Ralph & Rotha Wheeler   April 29th, 2009 9:15 pm ET

We give him A+ on all categories

william   April 29th, 2009 9:15 pm ET

this president is incredible ! He has more huge problems to deal with and he is mastering them all and in a very inclusive way. I give him an A +.

Ed's Kate   April 29th, 2009 9:14 pm ET

Typical result from Mr. Gergen. After all, he may be an analyst, but at this point and time I don't believe he wants to anger his own party. God forbid, they might vote a "Yes" instead of their constant "NO".

Maria C. Milla   April 29th, 2009 9:13 pm ET

The Republican party is guilty of how slow the economic system is improving because of its lack of patriotism thinking their opposition would make them stronger. On the contrary, today only 21% of Americans still considerer themselves Republicans! They are ashamed of their party. My father was a Republican but that party is not what it used to be

Beverly Conner   April 29th, 2009 9:13 pm ET

I give President Obama an A plus for his 100 days in office.

He was like a batter coming to bat with 10 home runs against him.
To catch up he has to swing for home runs not bunt or hit singles.

gary dattmore   April 29th, 2009 9:10 pm ET

handled the auto crisis wrong. should have forced the japanese transplants to raise their standards to those of the big 3. We are lowering all middle class america to a lower standard of living which does not stimulate the economy. And the trade imbalance continues to stymie the creation of jobs because we cannot make anything cheap enough unless we support slave labor in this country. More and more people are trying work two jobs to make ends meet, and less people can afford to retire. this leaves our younger workers without jobs. think about it!

Dennis   April 29th, 2009 9:10 pm ET

In 100 days, its absolutely an A!

man, woman and child with a debt of $ 186,000? Cool.

Laurie Cohen   April 29th, 2009 9:07 pm ET

When Mr. Obama speaks "off the cuff", that's what makes him an "A" President. Anyone balance so many balls in the air, so well, humbles me!
