Miss California to star in TV ad from conservative group

The group's last ad, 'A Gathering Storm,' came out earlier this month.

WASHINGTON (CNN) – Carrie Prejean, the Miss USA contestant from California who famously declared her opposition to same sex marriage on the pageant stage, will star in a new $1.5 million ad campaign funded by the National Organization for Marriage.

Prejean was roasted by same-sex marriage advocates after she stood up for what she called "opposite marriage" (marriage between a man and a woman) when responding to a question from celebrity blogger Perez Hilton during the pageant. But she's also become a fresh-faced standard-bearer for the same-sex marriage opponents, who have rallied to her defense.

The National Organziation for Marriage has scheduled a press conference with Prejean in Washington on Thursday to unveil the new ad, called "No Offense."

"She is attacked viciously for having the courage to speak up for her truth and her values," the group said in a press release. "But Carrie's courage inspired a whole nation and a whole generation of young people because she chose to risk the Miss USA crown rather than be silent about her deepest moral values."

According to the group, the ad will call "gay marriage advocates to account for their unwillingness to debate the real issue: gay marriage has consequences."

The Miss California TV ad is the group's second. Their first, called "A Gathering Storm," ran in several states earlier and featured actors issuing ominous warnings about the threats posed by same-sex marriage.

because "A Gathering Storm" was so successful!? it was a joke and became a laugh stocking on the web. So Miss California, we're looking forward to laughing at YOU some more! what a joke! Intolerence for specific groups of people is enough reason to strip her crown!

What courage? And she didn't inspire a whole nation or a whole generation. Susan Boyle was much more inspirational on Britain's Got Talent.

maybe her, Sean Haggerty, Bill-O, and Rush can get together and sing songs and talk about the good-old days when we spent like kids and ran up our debt.

Sean Hannity.... what a joke of a man. I heard him on the radio yesterday and he is simply a joke.

Pageant contestant speaks her mind when asked, and lays her politically incorrect convictions on the line, essentially throwing her shot at the title. Media response: She is lambasted for sticking to her guns and standing behind her beliefs.

Six term senator stops sticking his finger in the eye of those who voted for him for more than three decades by officially switching parties, stating his "convictions" forced him. Media response: "He's a man of integrity who stood up against others when it was not popular for him to do so."

It certainly does take courage to stand up and be divisionist and discriminatory...on national tv no less. While I agree that she's free to have her views, to me, to say that marriage is for only a man and a woman is borderline racist. I seriously doubt that when Ms. Prejean gave her answer that she thought she lost the crown , she is a bigot and closed minded , she gave the answer that she thought would win her the tittle . The question should have never been asked at the pageant unless they really, really wanted her to give her honest opinion--after all, as I recall it was asking what she thought of same sex marriage.

As I see it, there is no freedom on speech in this country any longer, unless you agree with all the radicals and loonies. You can't practice your religion in public any longer, you can't even have a Bible on you and it be seen, and now you have to agree with Homosexuality, even if you don't. Our forefathers would not even recognize this country now.

Would this be similar to how gays are attacked physically for refusing to be silent about their deepest moral values?

Or is risking life less important than risking some hokey title bestowed on questionable, what some call beauty?

Where is her courage? Where is herinspiration? Where is her so-called beauty when willingly being apart of such ugliness?

Good for her. I'm happy to say that free speech is still alive and well today (though strained). I have no problem with gays having the same rights as all other Americans. However, I don't believe the government should take a religious institution like marriage and turn it into a government defined, government run institution.

"gay marriage advocates to account for their unwillingness to debate the real issue: gay marriage has consequences."

Ummm, don't all marriage have consequences? For that matter, all human relationships have consequences. For that matter, all relationships in the most general context have consequences.

I has been my experience that there are many "conventional" marriages that are horrendous, that cause grave harm to the individuals, their relatives, and society in general. And that their are many gay marriages, that are fundamentally sound, helping society in general.

The problem is the religious connotations of the word marriage. Personally, I feel that those advocating gay marriage, which I am for, need to let go of a word. In doing so, they will bring about equality much quicker than trying to fight religion.

An interesting question – did she suffer a greater back-lash from the same-sex supporters than she would have from the "opposite marriage" supporters had she supported the former? What happened to freedom of speech in our country; especially when it comes to feelings that some may consider "politically incorrect" or "culturally insensitive"? The young lady stands by what she believes in – good for her. What's really interesting is that there are those who will bash me for saying that, without knowing my personal feelings about same-sex marriage; only that I support her freedom to say what she believes. Ignorance is alive and well in the United States.

What a stupid turn of events. Normally I enjoy Perez's rants but his this last time was out of bounds. I love my gay friends and wish they the same rights as all the other people in this country but I agree that Miss Cali was only stating her opinion which was what she was being asked to do. So to all those that ganged up on her... give it a rest. Why don't we try working and talking to people instead of alienating them. Good job making our side look like jerks Perez! Thanks a bunch.

... and to all those out there opposed to gay rights... well I think your wrong but I'll keep my discussions person to person and convince you one at a time that tradition and old morals are no reasons for keeping one set of people down.

I respect anyones personal views, however when Miss Prejean becomes a spokesperson for a particular group – then her right to privacy and personal respect is cast aside.

In America – all taxpayers should be treated equally.

I see no threat to my marriage because 2 people of the same sex want to be married. And the Church??? Well when they start paying taxes then I'll listen to what they have to say.

Carrie merely stated her own personal opinion, which I believe is what she was asked to do. You may not agree with it, but please don't attack her as a person for what she was taught to value. I wish that we could all discuss our personal views without taking offense every time someone doesn't share it. Especially when they disagree in a respectful manner, as Carrie did.

Interesting that the National Organization for Marriage commends Miss Prejean for "her truth and her values." By definition, TRUTH is universal, and does not change for individuals. Therefore, perhaps Miss Prejean's truth and her values are incongruous. Secondly, what are the consequences of gay marriage?

The issue of gay marriage comes down to whether one accepts that homosexuality is a natural part of human life. If one does there is no reason why gay marriage is unreasonable. If one can't accept the dignity and legitimacy of homosexual people, then (and without logic) it's easy to stand in the way.

The "gathering storm" ad was a hoot! Thanks! I haven't laughed that hard in a long time. But seriously, there is nothing to be admired in Prejean's "values or truths." She is simply another air head bigot. She refers to heterosexuals who marry as "opposite marriage." What the he** does that mean? And by the way, there are "consequences" to all marriages, half which end in divorce. I wish someone could come up with a LOGICAL reason for denying gay men and women the federal rights afforded by marriage. Or do you simply "choose' not to see both sides of the issue. The "Gathering Storm" ad I saw held absolutely no information "about the threats posed by same-sex marriage." Just a lot of people who don't like the idea standing in front of an "ominous" background. I just don't understand why this is such an issue when there are plenty of things that are legal but are unacceptable in religion. When are they going make it illegal to "covet your neighbour’s wife, or male or female slave" (Exodus 20:2–17)?

What a sad day for the U.S. The whole world let out a sigh of relief when President Obama was elected. After years of being governed by President Bush, the U.S. finally made a huge step forward however with this ad campaign it's all undone. The legalization of same-sex marriage is long overdue. Miss California should not use her crown to promote a belief that empedes the granting of the right to same-sex marriage. Would you crown someone who didn't want world peace?

I am also glad that a young individual is willing to speak her mind publicly on an issue that has, interestingly enough to me, become so controversial. Convictions should always be respected on both sides of an issue–and when a contrary opinion is expressed, it should not automatically be called hate-speech or, in this case, homophobic.

These groups have no legal basis for their position, and they are unable to debate the legal consequences of their actions. The Supreme Court ruled in Loving v. Virgina that marriage is a "fundamental civil right". They cited that the Constitution forbids states from making laws that take rights away from citizens. Bans on gay marriage clearly violate the Constitution. Our laws aren't based on the Bible, they are based on the Constitution.

Well let's see– the GOP/right wing now has an alternative to Sarah Palin. And this girl appears to be smarter and more articulate... and she's definitely better looking. But hello GOP/right wing– have you vetted the lady?? You just never know what kind of skeletons you might find in a person's closet (cough, cough, Sarah Palin). I hope Ms. Prejean is ready to be vetted by the press, because you can't step up and try to be a big shot in the media and not expect a little digging into your past.

And isn't it just a bit pathetic that the best these ultra conservative groups can come up with are people who suddenly become "famous" for some single remark in a 15 second sound bite (Joe the Plumber & now Ms Prejean) rather that someone who actually has a resume with some experience & qualifications???

Ms. Prejean is entitled to her opinion about this or any other issue, and she shouldn't be attacked to for stating it honestly. Clearly, there are decent people on both sides of the gay marriage issue, as there are on the issue of abortion. If you're the old-fashioned type and hold a narrow, traditional definition of the institution of marriage, it's pretty clear where you stand. Those on the other side of the issue– on the wrong end of the legal issue– see it as yet another attempt to marginalize them as people and relegate them to second class citizens. What's missing from this equation is sensibility and fairness. Legalizing same-sex marriage will not force Ms. Prejean to change her views on the issue. She can live out her life exactly as she sees fit. However, her point of view impacts others who feel equally entitled to the same personal happiness. Ms. Prejean doesn't seem to realize or care that her stand on this issue would compel people who don't feel the same way to live by her personal rules, despite their heavy emotional impact on them. This makes her appear unsympathetic, dogmatic and incredibly selfish. (Notice I left out the word bigoted).

Given the response of gay groups to Miss. CA, I think you could classify Gay and Lesbian groups as hate organizations. They are certainly much less tolerant than those they decry as being intolerant.

I don't really see what the big deal was about what she said. I disagree with her stance, but she was asked a question and she answered it, and it's not all that controversial a stance. I think it's ignorant, but plenty of people have the same ignorant opinion. And the judge's later temper-tantrum about it was shameful and embarrassing, and he didn't do himself any good with that.

I'm not sorry she's not Miss USA, though, because I've since seen interviews with her, and she's not very bright. On CNN the other night she started EVERY sentence she said with "You know what..." You can check it on YouTube if you doubt it. I kept thinking "Surely she won't say it again..." but she did. She was also self-absorbed: "You know what, we really need to focus on me..." I don't think she's all that pretty, either... she's got big clown teeth that HAVE to be fake.

In this new comercial will she provide just one single reason that will pass constitutional review as to why gay couples shouldn't be allowed to get married?...maybe just one?

"She is attacked viciously for having the courage to speak up for her truth and her values,"

really...you know that is all the KKK and the skin heads say they are doing...standing up for their truths and values. Odd that in 2009 people are still getting treated in such a way under the guidelines of values.

Funny that this is running on the ticker the same day as the story about the hate crimes bill.

They call themselves The National Organziation for Marriage. Yet this is the only thing they are doing. Trying to stoop gay marriage. If they really were an organization for marriage, wouldn't they be doing something to keep marriages together, decrease the number of divorces and single parent families? I've called and asked them able this. This is their only cause. To stop gay marriage...why, because they simple don't like it.

And what are those consequences? I don't get it, and the mere fact that this group states that there are consequences to same-sex marriage is the exact reason that those of us who support same-sex marriage choose not to debate the "subject" with them. Attention NOM, what consequences? Seriously, please show us empirically what consequences marriage equality will have besides the expansion of civil rights. You have years of data to draw from in Mass, and will soon have much more data to draw from in many other states.

But you don't want to talk about empirical reality, do you? Because that is an argument you cannot win, just as all opponents of equality and civil rights before you.

You are the slave owners, women's vote opponents, and ERA dissenters of our generation. You are on the wrong side of history just as these racists and misogynists before you. And you deserve the harsh judgement that is forthcoming.

Ms California didn't get the crown because her overall placement wasn't enough to win, not solely because of how she chose to answer the question about same sex marriage.

That whole issue aside, I hope people will realize that her uneducated and grammatically incorrect answer made her appear even more rediculous than her actual stance on the issue (that we can choose between "opposite marriage" and same sex marriage in this country, which is not true at all since the Defense Of Marriage Act gives no federal recognition to same sex marriage).

The stone cold reality is that her call for media attention makes her look more like a sore loser than anything else.

Sure it has consequences, like encouraging long-term meaningful relationships and discouraging discrimination against gay people.

What are the so-called negative consequences? No matter how loud or how often the religious right tries to convince the American people that gay marriage is one step on a slippery slope towards bestiality and Satan worship, that just doesn't ring true to a majority of Americans.

The NOM's lies are disgusting and I cannot believe anyone would be stupid enough to trust them. If it were up to them, gay people would not only be losing their rights, but their lives (just look at how they're trying to stop the Matthew Shepard Act from passing). Miss California does indeed have a right to her own opinion and viewpoint but, as a representative of a larger group, she also must
have tolerance for other individuals and their rights.

Our constitution promises us ALL, not just select groups to certain rights and I find it very disconcerting, that some of our citizens have decided to campaign, Not for rights but, against the rights of others.

Many of the people that are against marriage for gay people, are from other countries and "escaped" to our country because our constitution
provides us with the freedom to worship freely and to live without fear of persecution. These same people are more than eager to deny their fellow citizens their consitutional rights. How very ironic!

I am embarrassed that fellow citizens are "fighting" to restrict the rights of other citizens. This is not the America I love.

This is largely a false issue based on faulty religious beliefs, namely blind faith in the literal word of the bible.

Maybe she can explain how the "gay storm" is coming, and that two people marrying each other at the statehouse and living their private lives could somehow affect heterosexual marriage. Oh, and then she can explain how the State can't make religious institutions marry gay couples, and that this organization uses scare tactics that are pathetic and overtly discriminatory. "The real issue: gay marriage has consequences". That's what advocates of equal marriage are fighting for! Consequences like: shared insurance benefits, being able to see a spouse in the hospital, being able to jointly file taxes, etc etc. Those are the consequences that people who pursue "opposite marriages" should receive, not just a 'civil union' piece of paper that officially establishes them as 2nd class citizens.

50 years ago, Miss California and her supporters may have very well said that inter-racial marriages "have consequences" and warned voters of the threats posed by it. It doesn't mean that they would have been right then either.

I'm curious about these so called *ominous warnings* about the *consequences* of gay marriage...Right now...as you sit at your computer and eat dinner with your family and go to the park with your kids, gay people are living together and raising families together, sending their kids to your kids schools, and watching movies, listening to music, shopping at the mall together....even proclaiming their love for each other in ceremonies much like the one my heterosexual husband and I had 20 years ago...and it is NOT affecting YOUR life in any way, shape or form!!!

It's been going on since the beginning of time and it NEVER had ANY impact on YOUR life. Why is that any different now?

Why don't you start concerning yourself with the 60% divorce rate between heterosexual couples in America...Especially among those who consider themselves Evangelical Christians who have a 25% HIGHER divorce rate than those left wing liberal Democrats.

So the homophobic bigots who are against gay marriage choose this empty-headed nitwit to be their spokesperson? Wow, that is brillant! How about worrying about real problems like poverty, gun violence, heath-care, jobs, etc. and stop obsessing about what other people who wish to make a life-long commitment to another person is doing? How does it affect your life one iota what other people do in their lives? I am just baffled by the religous right and those who oppose gay marriage. What the heterosexual marriage advocates fail to mention is that gay-marriage advocates are only standing up for their rights to live life as an equal member of society. It was the heterosexual marriage advocates who demeaned gays, made them a second class citizen, and attacked them first. Rather than talk about the real issues facing marriage today (i.e. divorce rates in excess of 50%, single-family homes, parents failing to pay child support, TV-marriage shows/jokes), they'd rather attack gays. This is America, and the 14th Amendment still applies–"equal protection" under the law.

Well, it burns me that Hilton and Smoakler can participate as professionals in a business setting and then tear Ms. California apart for answering honestly a question which was posed to her during the show. Hilton and Smoakler are unprofessional, period.

Then she gets hammered in the press by the extreme, left liberal groups for not conforming to what they want pushed across all states law books about same sex marriages. Frankly, I think if a homosexual couple want to have the same misery, divorce, pay alimony as heterosexual couples–by all means, Allow them the privelege of joining the national club of having 1 in 2 marriages end in divorce. Why shouldn't homosexual couples be as miserable as heterosexual couples????

Donald Trump are we now turning the Miss USA pageant into a religious free for all. It is sickening the way this country's religious bigots jump on every little thing to try to take away rights, IF IN THEIR TINY LITTLE MINDS don't agree. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.

This country should show these bigots that we are sick and tired of their SICK LITTLE BRAINS. Miss California included. She has a right to her own opinion, but to be a public figure she should think before she speaks. Or is she a female rush the oxy one.

How cute that the religious right has a new hero. They certainly love their beauty queens, don't they. However, isn't there a bit of irony in Miss California stating her "deepest religious and moral beliefs" moments after strutting around in a bikini so brief that it would make even Arnold Scwarzenegger blush? She and the other contestants performed a dance routine that was more akin to stripping, wearing bikinis covered only by a sheer cloth acting as a miniskirt. Now, I'm no prude, and I like seeing women in bikinis as much as the next guy, but is that really ok with conservative Christians? Is this really the role model they want for their daughters. I guess anyone is suitable as long as they are against gay marriage, even women who advertise themselves like prime cuts of meat in front of a national audience.

I have never understood conservative's obsession with sex.
Even given that, they should understand that the concept of morality and sin starts and stop with thier own thoughts and behavior.
I fail to see how someone else's personal choices affect them, or why they should even have any justification to attack others.
They are free to live life as they see fit, and should let others do the same.
That is the true foundation of a free society.
I do not know the nation or world they desire, but I doubt that most of us would choose to live there.....

Um...what consequences? Bad parenting, single-parents, divorce, neglect, abuse or unchristian values? Oh yeah, those.

Those consequences can happen, and do, in families with both a mother and father.

If nothing else, conservatives should get back to their roots and let the states decide. Don't like so-called "activist-courts"? Then at least have the decency and humility to say "Vermont got it right."

Or does that part of the vows not count for the organization she represents? And if asked during the contest, her view on divorce ( adultery) would she have labeled all divorced people adulterers? That being said, I'd like to see their list of "consequences" that are relevant to the prospect of this being a matter of SECULAR law and their facts and empirical evidence that back them up. While I applaud Miss CA for speaking her mind I hardly think it qualifies her for celebrity status(or demon status either). The people who demonized her for voicing a personal opinion are as radicalized as those who now want to make her an icon of virtuous values as the neo-cons define them.

Carrie Prejean and The National Organziation for Marriage have an entire right to their opinion, as do anyone else who supports this view. However, I am a heterosexual man who when I heard lyrics from The Smiths song "How Soon Is Now" many years ago I determined homosexuality and same sex marriage is completely justified. The lyrics are..."So shut your mouth...How can you say I go about things the wrong way? I am human and I need to be loved just like everybody else does." In essence, who are you to decide for someone else what they think and feel...and everyone is deserving of love. Until there is civil rights and equality for ALL there is no civil rights and no equality, and, we as a people can not claim to be civilized. Thank you for enlightening me Morrissey.

To me she is Miss USA and if she ran again she would get my vote instantly. Who the heck cares! She has a right to her opinion, others have a right to theirs. But standing opposite each other and brandishing your ideals declaring the opposition is wrong and, and, and, so there! This doesn't work and everyone knows it. Whatever happened to civility, the belief in a human soul and it's worth regardless of sexual orientation, as long as laws are not being broken that is. Here is a fundamental question that needs to be answered, why can't the same sexes be married? What would that destroy that we currently have? More love? More peace? Good parents (yes gays can be)? Family? Let's do something radical, let's be tolerant. Our views, individually, aren't always right, and often collectively either, just remember slavery and how we got that wrong. So I challenge everyone to be tolerant, to get on with living and loving life....chill.

I'm a big supporter of gay marriage, but I'm siding with Ms California on this one. She was asked her opinion on a public stage and she gave it....fair enough. I don't agree with it, but free thought means the freedom to be wrong. Perez Hilton just loaded the oppostion with ammunition that ultimately damages his own positon. He'd have come off a lot better by replying to Prejean with "I don't agree with you, but thanks for sharing your beliefs...they won't affect the outcome of this pageant."

I still find it amazing how people that preach love and tolerance actually embrace hate and intolerance. Also how they tell only one side of the story and basically lie about why the did it. Read the truth behind the coming storm and learn the real reason why the courts stood behind the gays and not the Christians. The reason in every case was that the "Christians" were being bigots. Trying to deny rights or services to people just because they didn't follow their holy book. Love how they support hate and intolerance by children rather than understanding also.

How the Republican Representative Sally said that gays were a bigger threat then the taliban. The only thing gays threaten is the Church's dark ages thinking. Look at the anti civil rights people and interracial marriage bigots and you will find many matching comments by the "moral" right saying how it was wrong to allow this to happen. Those that fail to learn history are bound to repeat its mistakes.

    Look,

This has every right to feel the way she does. This is America and I would never want anyone to take that away from her. I as a gay man was not that offended by what she said during the pageant. What I do not like is this National organization for marriage and their dramatic rhetoric. Saying that she had courage to stand up for herself, and because of that it cost her the crown is absolutely ridiculous. There was no courage in that. This organization is making it seem like they are the minority and that there rights are being infringed upon when in fact, it's the opposite. Their scare tactics are sickening. Gay marriage does not effect anyone but the two people who decided to get married. The NOFM is a terrible biggoted organization, and if they are worried about the sanctity of marriage, then they need to make comercials battling divorce. Our divorce rate is the highest in the world. That is was is really destroying the sanctity of marriage.

-According to the group, the ad will call "gay marriage advocates to account for their unwillingness to debate the real issue: gay marriage has consequences."-

What exactly are the consequences? Committed loving people will be able to get married? Other then that I don't see what other "consequences" there are. Of course, I'm thinking rationally and not letting bias and fear cloud my judgement, maybe THAT is the issue!

I think everyone is missing the real issue of her answer. She first said we live in a country where we can "choose" same sex marriage. This is not the case. 4 states have laws allowing same sex marriage. 4 states do not the union make!
If you want to defend marriage, outlaw divorce. Problem solved. This will make getting married a more serious decision.
The only problem with this idea is that people love to tell others how to live their lives, but no one likes to be told how to live their life.

The "National Organization for Marriage" has chosen for itself one of the most ironic names ever.

Also, as regards the debate where the "the real issue" is concerned– the real issue is plain old prejudice and intolerance. These people want to foist their narrow, religious world-view on everyone and that is all they care about.

Can anyone honestly say that "opposite marriage" (to borrow a phrase from the eloquent Ms. Prejean) doesn't "have consequences"?

Watch a post interview from Miss NC on the same question, and it is clear why she won Miss USA.

So, who really cares what this woman thinks? It's actually quite fitting of the National Organization for Marriage to use somebody with NO credentials AT ALL to speak out on their behalf.

It must be nice to make money for simply openly agreeing with a majority opinion that oppresses people who are different from you. What would Jesus do? Certainly not make money off of the struggle and pain of tens of millions of people in the USA alone. She, along with the NOM, is a total, morally corrupt hypocrite.

"[G]ay marriage has consequences"... yes, I suppose so; like keeping the government out of religion (who's to tell a church who they can and can't marry?). Keeping the government out of religion seems like a winner to me (as is the converse).

However, if there are people who feel that gay marriage rights as granted by the state would interfere in their worship practises, howzabout starting with some taxes on church properties? Don't like that, eh? What factual part of "gay marriage" scares you the most?

Just what is the threat of same-sex marriage? You want sanctity of marriage? Outlaw divorce. Make infidelity a felony. I dunno, they've got good ideas over there in the middle east on marriage, right? I bet their divorce rates are really low.

Wow, is the First Amendment a problem for Gay/Lesbian advocates and same-sex marriage. She was basically "set-up" by Perez Hilton. The Miss USA organization has never publicly backed this essential right under the Constitution. If anything her comment's were so mild there is nothing to argument. She used the term "opposite marriage" to describe male/female unions. I'm certain Marriage between a woman and a man are the Majority in the USA and around the world, estimated at 85+% or more, not the minority. By attacking Miss CA, the rabid zealots of the homosexual community showed their true colors: agree with us and same-sex unions or be reviled, slandered, and harassed by Gay advocates who will use the 1st Amendment to justify anything "they" might say. Hooray for Miss CA!

No offense? I find her intolerance offensive, and if you have to start off a comment by saying "No offense..." then it's likely what follows is offensive. I don't have a problem with her having her own opinion or beliefs about same sex marriage, but keep it "biblically correct" and in her church and out of the right for loving couples to be civially married. And one more thing, no offense, but what do I care about some ignorant beauty queen's belief about marriage?

Not surprising that she has teamed up with that organization. She's looking for her 15 minutes of fame & they will use any chance they can get to try to discredit the LGBT community. Perhaps her vocabulary will improve for the add...the world already witnessed her ignorance in use of the english language, as well as her views. Funny, after she lost the pageant, in an effort to gain some support & temper her comments, she said her sister is a big supporter of gay rights. If that is true (which I doubt), I wonder what her sister thinks about her being a mouthpiece for what amounts to be a hate group. And yes gay marriage has consequences. It gives equal rights to a portion of American citizens who have been ostracized and denied the rights that should be theirs. It is not a religious issue, it is a legal one. It is time for separation of Church & state to be practiced & for our lawmakers to grant equal rights to all citizens.

    April 29, 2009 02:14 pm at 2:14 pm |

    What consequences?

More happily married citizens enjoying legally sanctioned rights of marriage. More stable homes paying taxes and offering safe havens for children needing adoption. More legally joined people with a vested interest in the safety, security, and economic stability of their own homes, their neighborhoods, and their communities.

Same-sex marriage does not threaten "traditional" marriage. Legalizing it will not force any religious institution to perform their sacred rites in sanction of a legal union.

Same-sex marriage *does* guarantee citizens of the United States of America the right to all the legal rights and obligations of their fellow citizens who join in unions of the opposite sex.

What are the consequences? Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for all citizens of these United States.

    That's not only a consequence, that's a benefit, and a civil right.

"Miss California" is not being persecuted for speaking her mind; she is being derided for the bigotry of her position. And being "brought up that way" does not excuse bigotry; if it did, slavery would still be a civil and Christian-sanctioned institution, women and blacks and Asians and other minorities would still be barred from voting and owning property, and any other number of other "traditional" institutions now considered illegal would still be in place.

God bless America, and god bless people who find each other and fall in love and want to get married. And for God's sake, let them.

I'm a fairly liberal democrat and I agree with her right to voice her opinion, popular or unpopular. Also, I thought it was rude and unfair to ask her a provocative question while the others got "softball" questions.

As a red blooded, skirt-chasing man, let me state that a gay male (this yahoo .. Perez Hilton ) has NO BUSINESS as a judge at a sexy woman beauty contest and that, like it or not, is what Miss USA is. We've gone too far when we care more about political correctness than the wishes of the majority of the population.

In trying to be accomodating, Miss California stumbled over her words ... that's why she ended up saying "opposite marriage". Marriage is a religious sacrament. I'm sorry but gays don't get to redefine it.

A person is truly beautiful if she has true morals.
Miss California is the only true beauty if she is the only moral person there.

Just what are the consequences of gay marriage? It amazes me how some people in this country get up in arms to "defend" marraige. "Marriage between a man and a woman is sacred". In fact, its so sacred that millions of Americans tune in to watch shows like "The Bachelor" where the "sacred" act of marriage is degraded to a popularity contest. Hand picked, shallow, potential brides to be compete for the affections of a man they don't even know. Its obvious that its more about being on TV for these women than true love. The bachelor then chooses a spouse in the same fashion he'd use at a buffet; by sampling all the dishes before settling on the meatloaf. Then America goes "Aaaaaaw. That's so sweet!". Is it? How sacred can marriage be in America when the divorce rate is probably around 70 or 80 percent? People get married for the wrong reasons or give up too soon when the marriage gets tough. Get real people. My marriage to my wife has nothing to do with the rest of the country and neither does a marriage between two people of the same sex. Quit being judgemental and focus your energy into battling REAL issues.

Good for her! I love the fact that she continues to stand up for what she believes knowing her opponents will be vocal about it.

I have a lot of respect for people who do not comprimise their integrity for the squeeky wheel.

Have you see the ad for gay marriage and how every has duct tape over their mouths? The irony is they want people who dont agree with them to be quiet, no one is trying to quiet them.

One does have to ask, Doesn't that Bible that Miss Prejean is so fond of, say something about not bearing false witness? And speaking of bearing false witness, what do you think Jesus would say about those huge FAKE BREASTS of hers? God did NOT make her that way. False Witness (that's one of the big 10).

"She is attacked viciously for having the courage to speak up for her truth and her values," the group said in a press release. "But Carrie's courage inspired a whole nation and a whole generation of young people because she chose to risk the Miss USA crown rather than be silent about her deepest moral values."

Nothing for nothing, I don't think she did it for any other reason than she spoke her mind. I don't really think she thought she was risking anything. I do think that the gay community is rather quick to pull the sexual preference card awful quick. As an individual, I don't have to believe what you believe, nor should I be treated like dirt because I don't.

A BIGOT is a person who is intolerant of or takes offense to the opinions, lifestyles or identities differing from his or her own.

Call it what you want it is still bigotry. Time will show the hatred encouraged by "religion" is despicable. It is inevitable that as we progress as a society the walls will come down and equal rights will prevail. Stop hiding behind your church and admit that you are a bigot. Everyone has a right to pursue happiness. Like the racial bigotry of our past, there will come a time when we will look back and feel shame for our actions.

Stop claiming that you are protecting marriage. We currently take marriage for granted. Just look at the divorce rate. When half of the current marriages end in divorce now, how can you say you are protecting it when it isn't even taken seriously by straight couples?

Ominous empty threats is more like it. I saw that first NOM commercial and was confused as to what the message actually was. Those actors told the audience they were afraid, but "why" and "of what" weren't part of the discussion.

So what is everyone so afraid of when it comes to gay marriage? Anyone? What are these alleged terrible consequences? Please, I'd like to know. Or is this the exact same situation from decades past when interracial marriage was illegal? No one had any good reasons for that either, except ignorance, fear, and hate. I suspect that it is the same.

So come on, Miss CA. Really. You weren't terribly eloquent during the pageant. Will it be easier once someone else's words are in your mouth?

By the way, how does gay marriage have any consequences except for those gays getting married? Love to hear that logic – something besides religious-based bias if that's possible...

Good for her. I guess Perez Hilton considers speech "free" as long as you agree with his position. The only reason she didn't win is because she has a view that is not accepted by the liberal Democrat establishment. The facts are the facts, only liberal Democrats in America look to punish people for their views, denying them a win in a contest like this, promotions at work, grades deserved at schools, the list goes on.

To vote Democrat is to support discrimination, you can't change this inconvient truth. I support gay marriage but I dont think people should be punished for having a different view, therefore I could never support the evil that is the liberal Democrat.

BTW, imagine she lost because she supported gay marriage, this is why decent people don't vote Democrat.

This California chic needs to stop it already. I applaud her for stating her opinion and for not saying what the public and maybe even the judge wanted her to say. However, that is HER opinion, HER belief. Noone is asking her to change her beliefs so she shouldnt be involved in ads that basically attacks gay people and want them to change their beliefs and lifestyles. And to the group paying her for this ad cos she stood up for her moral values, is it moral for her to be parading around in her underwear infront of millions? Would they be ok if a fellow church member decided to strip down to her underwear for a beauty pageant? Wont they be the first to criticize that church member? My advice to them and all the so-called Christians in America: Stop picking and choosing which Biblical standards you will support. That just makes you judgemental and hypocritical.

What exactly are the consequences of gay marriage? Two men or two women can go to the courthouse and get a marriage license. The result is what exactly? If a church doesn't want to sanction their marriage or perform the ceremony, that's fine. Some churchs won't marry non-members or people who are divorced. Why not approach gay marriage the same way? Miss California didn't lose the pageant because of her beliefs but because she stumbled around and couldn't answer the question in an eloquent manner.

What is the THREAT posed by gay marriage? The real threats are infidelity, unrealistic expectations of marriage, alcoholism, spousal abuse and lack of communication! If you are threatened by 2 men or 2 women who want to get married, then your marriage is too unstable to start with! Don't we want ALL people to be in a loving relationship with someone? The divorce rate for straight couples has been around 50% for many years, all before any gay marriage laws went into effect. Why don't these groups concentrate on all the single women who decide to have babies at 16 or younger? Maybe they should start giving them BIRTH CONTROL PILLS instead of abstinence lectures!

Why don't people get angry about a war that has killed 6000 of our children? Or the people dying in various revolutions around the world? No, they want to stand up for something that is meaningless and won't take any effort on their part.

I do however have a question about the comment about her "deepest moral values". Is parading yourself in a bikini specifically to show off your body something people of high moral value participate in? I think these 'contests' that select women by their beauty are demeaning and have no place in our society.

I am against gay marriage as well. Here are ten reasons why:

1.Being gay is not “natural”. Real Americans always reject un-natural things like eyeglasses, polyester, and air conditioning.

2.Gay marriage will encourage people to be “gay”; in the same way hanging around tall people will make you tall.

3.Legalizing gay marriage will open the door to all kinds of “crazy” behavior. People may even wish to marry their pets because a dog has legal standing and can sign a marriage contract.

4.Straight marriage has been around a long time and hasn’t changed at all; women are still property, blacks can’t marry whites, and divorce is still illegal.

5.Straight marriage will be less meaningful if gay marriage were allowed; the sanctity of Britney Spears’ 55-hour “just for fun” marriage would be destroyed.

6.Straight marriages are valid because they produce children. Gay couples, infertile couples, and old people shouldn’t be allowed to marry because our orphanages aren’t full yet, and the world needs more children.

7.Obviously gay parents will raise gay children, since straight parents only raise straight children.

8.Gay marriage is not supported by religion. In a theocracy like ours, the values of one religion are imposed on the entire country. That’s why we have only one religion in America.

9.Children can never succeed without a male and a female role model at home. That’s why we as a society expressly forbid single parents to raise children.

10.Gay marriage will change the foundation of society; we could never adapt to new social norms. Just like we haven’t adapted to cars, the service-sector economy, and longer life spans.

Sorry, but the narrow-mindedness in this contestant's attitude smacks more of ignorance, and a desire to take rights away from others who are equal to her, more than any 'courage or deep moral values'. It seems to me i am not inspired by her, or this 'too far right' group.

Seems that gay marriage advocates DO discuss this, and the whole reason this IS in the news is because these groups do deserve equal rights, they are equal to anyone else.

I will certainly root AGAINST the Miss USA California contestant.

You gotta be kidding me. Are these people actually proud of their bigotry? Marriage is a legally recognized institution and it has nothing to do with anybody's misguided view of religion. As long as rights are associated with marriage (like insurance, care giving, etc...) everybody has the civil right to marriage, not just heterosexual homophobes. When is the Supreme Court going to enforce this? Remember – the Christian righ was against civil rights for blacks back in tyhe 60's as well. Praise god!!!

Quote: "She is attacked viciously for having the courage to speak up for her truth and her values"

Is ignorance and lack of education regarding this subject also called courage? Is treating people like 2nd class citizens and not giving them the same rights as everyone else called "her truth and values"

Being gay has nothing to do with morals or values. It is simply how a person is born. People are born gay. What kind of message is she sending to gay kids across this country? They need love, support, and above all to know that when they grow up and ready to marry they will have that fundamental human right.

She may have a gay child of her own one day. I'm sure she would want that child to be equal to everyone else. Education is the key to combat ignorance.

First, I do not think this question should have been asked. But since it was, I think her response was not intelligent. There is nothing wrong with saying she believes in "opposite marriage", but she answered in a less than sensible fashion. First she said that in this "great land" people can have same or opposite marriage. Not true – a small number of states allow gay marriage. Then she followed it with a statement that in her "country" she does not believe there should be gay marriage. I didn't know California seceded! So she has the facts wrong on all counts – stating gay marriage possible in this great land – and referring to California as a country. For those reasons I believe she deserved to lose – not for her belief to which she is entitled.

"She is attacked viciously for having the courage to speak up for her truth and her values,"

A red herring. Anyone can express their views, sure, that is guaranteed by the first amendment and I think Miss CA should be encouraged to express what her "true values" are. However, if those "true values" are made on a stage in front of a large audience, and are based on ignorance, involve discrimination, and is poorly articulated, expect many people to express their "true values" in opposition to those views.

The view that state-sanctioned gay-marriage poses any kind of threat to anyone is just plain bizarre to me and represents a general inability to use critical reasoning against beliefs that are indoctrinated into individuals at a young age. I have yet to hear a rational, justified argument against state-sanctioned gay marriage.

These moronic religious zealots do not understand the difference between a marriage sanctioned by their religion and a marriage sanctioned by the state. They can restrict marrige under their religion if they want but, in a land of equal rights for all, they should not and must not be able to restrict who can get married under the law. The good news is that , if these nut jobs are correct and there is a wise and just supreme being, they will all get to spend eternity in Hell.

I agree wholeheartedly with Carrie, marraiage indeed is by definition and by the Bible is a between a man and a woman, anyone that says otherwise, needs to go back thier respective mothers and ask, why she conceived them through her male partner.

If everyone is gay or a lesbian, how do they think they were given life??A straight woman gave them life.

I am neither a Republican nor a Democrat. but yes, yes, yes, a marriage is indeed between a man a woman.

I wish someone could explain to me why they are so afraid of same sex marriage? I don't see why it would affect hetros marriages. Maybe they should just mind their own business and tend to their own lives. I am tired of having someone push their values on me.It is not my business or theirs.

Ms. Prejean seems like a nice person, if slightly dim-witted based on her inability to speak extemporaneously. I would bet that she would not like to be told that her choice of mate, or religion, or political party makes her less of a citizen, so what can we make of her opposition to others having the same rights, other than that she is a bigot?
At some point, our country will have to reconstruct and fortify the wall that separates church and state. Some issues are the purview of religion and some are not. Affording citizens equal rights under the law is one that is clearly not.

Carrie's response to the question at the pageant was both thoughtful and respectful. It's a shame that her words will be used by the same types who terrorized our nation into abandoning the Equal Rights Amendment. Keep it up, conservatives and republicans, your big tent is turning into a fortified bunker.

You were right to speak your opinion. Its against God. How can we run a "NATION UNDER GOD" if we approve gay marriage laws???? Keep your chin up , your not alone. Your one of the few beautiful model-type women that state their true feelings w/o worry of being knocked to the bottom of the beauty pool.

There is nothing moral about denying your fellow adult Americans the same rights you have. Mind your own business and go protest adultry, the real threat to your marriage.
