Cantor: 'We've got a lot to learn' from Obama

Cantor acknowledged that the GOP is playing catchup on technology.
Cantor acknowledged that the GOP is playing catchup on technology.

(CNN) - House Minority Whip Eric Cantor tells CNN's John King that the GOP still has a lot to learn from President Obama.

"President Obama is a great communicator. We understand that," he said in an interview that aired on CNN's State of the Union Sunday. "He's also been very adept at adopting the technology of today to access the youth vote and the younger population of this country. That's the future, and I believe we've got a lot to learn. The Republican Party can't keep doing things the way it always has in terms of technology."

Cantor, along with former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and former GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney, held the kick off event Saturday for the National Council for a New America, a high-profile Republican effort to engage a diverse group of voters.

One new GOP face who seems to disagree with Cantor's point of view: Meghan McCain, whose father John McCain is involved with the NCNA effort.

"Simply embracing technology isn't going to fix our problem," the 24-year-old told a gay Republican group last month. "Republicans using Twitter and Facebook isn't going to miraculously make people think we're cool again. Breaking free from obsolete positions and providing real solutions that don't divide our nation further will."

The NCNA is planning to hold a series of town halls across the country in the coming months in an effort to re-cast the party’s image.

The Republicans seem to be obsessed with technology and image. The reason that they are daily becoming more of a minority party is not image but content. As long as they are exclusive – shutting anybody not like them out and with policies rooted in the 19th century (I'm being charitable here), they will continue to decline.

The phrase "Lipstick on a Pig" comes to mind. All they have done so far is to research new colors of lipstick.

The Rethuglicans have to do a lot more than learn how to use Facebook and Twitter. They have to fundamentally change their message that embraces their right wing, evangelical based social ideology of being anti women's rights, anti gay, and, appealing to the lowest common denominator of the bigoted classes with their thinly disguised hate speech about any people that aren't just like them.

Also, they have to let go the apron strings of big banks, Wall Street, and multinational corporations. When the do this they may have a chance to move back into the mainstream of American politics. Sounds like they need to become more like the Republican party before Reagan, or maybe more like middle of the road Democrats, ya' think?

Listen to Meghan! A tool is just a tool! Real communications requires a lot more than using a technological tool! Learning to listen to younger people and have a real conversation is a tool that has never been used and has always been forgotten not how to use the younger people but how to live with younger people...remember when you were young and full of ideas, hopes and dreams...and no one was listening or wanted you to change anything...remember all of your best sides and get rid of the rest!

It figures... A 24 year old girl is the only conservative that is talking sense.

As a life long Republican. I remain deeply disappointed by my GOP leadership. The GOP keeps putting Mitt Romney and Sarah Palin up front as though they were the chosen candidates for 2012. If this is all we have got then we lose before the election even begins. Republicans have already rejected Romney as one of the Billionaire Boys Club members who gained his wealth by moving companies and jobs overseas. And Sarah (not smarter than a fifth grader) Palin is the star of her own circus. Her unwed teenage daughter gave birth to her illegitimate baby while the Father is on TV makeing a fool of himself and the Palins. Sarah's sister in law is a drug addict who has just been arrested for burglary. Palin is not a candidate she is a soap opera. The GOP needs to break away from Limbaugh and Hannity and find a leader who has the attributes of Reagan. A conservative who truly cares about the working middle class.

Eric Cantor is one of the negative images that the GOP has right now in my opinion. He along with Michelle in Minnesota and Steele may be younger than most of the GOPers but still have been known to say some of the dumbest things I've ever heard. If that bunch is the future face of the GOP they will still be down for quite sometime.

That's it! That's the reason they lost, they did not embrace technology. If they had embraced it, Obama would've lost and the republicans would have at least a 70 vote majority in the senate. The repub's are drowning and they don't even realize that they're in water!

The GOP really needs to listen to Meghan McCain as she is correct. They can be on Facebook, they can Twitter but until they can change the image of being old, white guys with old ideas they are going to continue to lose.

First, I'm amazed that Cantor has agreed with anything that the President has done. He hasn't so far and President Obama has pointed this out several times. Meghan McCain is dead on when she said that embracing technology is not the only thing that has to be fixed. All they are doing is changing the vehicle so they can get their worn out ideas out there more efficiently.

There is so much more to learn from Obama than this. I'm wondering when did Megan McCain become the spokesperson for the Republican Party? During the campain she just stood there with nothing to say. Now she is being asked her opinion on issues I'm sure she doesn't quite understand....give me a break!

Would someone in what is left of the Republican Party please listen to Meghan McCain? As a moderate Republican, who voted for Obama, it got harder and harder to stomach the insincerity and pandering of my own party. If you want to imitate Obama, replicate his authenticity, his intellect, his humility and his self-control. You don't have to take up his positions, just be real.

Meghan McCain lays the smackdown on Cantor.

The Republican ideals on economics, science and foreign affairs have been so thoroughly discredited, the party needs a wholesale change of platforms and ideas. But given the entrenched power, it ain't gonna happen.

Meghan, I personally invite you to join the Democratic Party. Your views sound more like a conservative Democrat that anything that has a voice in the Republican party today.

So basically, the message of the NCNA is, "We haven't got a clue. Do You?"
Why is it any time the Republicans say the word "new" there's nothing new to be heard?

Funny thing is I really believe Cantor gets it.

But the RNC is run by the lock-step Limbaugh/Hannity/Coltier storm troopers and it will never change.

See this is the problem, they think they neeed to change the IMAGE of the Republican party, not change the PLATFORM of the RNC which is why they lost in the first place and will continue to loose as long as they think they kow whats best for us.

Poor Republicans, you didn't have to worry about the Commies or the Radical Islamic Terrorist – you had to worry about eating your own dead...

aaaah, so since repubs have NO ideas of thier "own", then decide they need to learn from Obama and "copy" his ways and means...LOL, OK, so go ahead and copy his ways, however, no matter how many sites you get on to "twitter, blog etc", until you have some GOOD ideas of your own, it will gain you nothing ! this is just another way for rewpubs to "divide the country to conquer", not realizing that it has to be UNITE the country to conquer ! which IS what Obama has done and they still dont "get it" !

Meghan McCain could not be more right–taking a lesson from Obama's mastery of technology is not going to be enough. Honestly, I don't know that there are enough people in this country who genuinely believe in the things the Republican Party now stands for. Young voters care about their own future, not whether gays are allowed to marry or whether all abortions should be banned. They hear "tax cuts" and think, "so what? I hardly make enough money to pay taxes anyway." Other than the hard-core evangelical Christians, the GOP is still offering nothing but negativity and worn-out "solutions" to problems. Obama seems willing to try fresh approaches to everything, to engage his dissenters, and to genuinely care about people. I can't say that's true about any of the leading Republican figures involved in these discussions.

The best governments have been the ones that govern from the center, is the case here in the US and other countries as well. Extremisms such a Limbaugh, coulter, etc only brings disunity and very little accomplishments.

Some economies have survive the downturn very well, such as Canada, Chile, etc.. Even in the downturn they still have vibrant markets. These countries have centrist goverments.

Cantor and the Repups just don't get it. Their message and their machine to deliver it is BROKEN. So a little twine and duct tape is not going to fix it. They do not talk about substantive changes that are needed. They want to copy Obama, but only on the superficial level. They miss all the real changes the President is making. They are out of touch with America.
They say America does not like the way the President is moving the country. WRONG. He has 70-80% approval. Only Meghan McCain seems to have a glimmer of understanding. But all the right wing nuts like Rush, Coulter etc cast her aside.
Hey Cantor, forget the twine and duct tape. Work on getting a new better machine. Try working for America.

    Cantor has it right

"using Twitter and Facebook isn't going to miraculously make people think we're cool again. Breaking free from obsolete positions and providing real solutions that don't divide our nation further will.

Better communication is the solution, but only if you understand communcation as a two way dialogue. For the Republican party right now, listening to the poeple they would like to attract – not just the current base – is the key to turning the party back to being a viable and valuable force in american politics.

And I'm not even a Republican.

It is going to take a lot more than technology and strong speaking skills to revamp the Republican party. These guys don't get it. Even in their "image-changing" quest, the focus seems to be on projecting an image comparable to President Obama's that will attract more voters in order to climb out of the political abyss that they've placed themselves in. President Obama's success was more than just image. It was a genuine honesty and desire to move this country in a new direction. You can put new clothes on an individual but unless the inside is changed, the person is still viewed as they've always been. Same here. Unless the Republicans reach out beyond their base and core constituencies, they'll remain the butt of jokes and in utter disarray.

It is well and great that the GOP wants to redefine itself. But I wish someone would remember who won the election in November and was inaugurated in January. All I hear is 2012 from the Repubs. What about working together NOW to solve our real and frightening problems? We have an elected President and Congress. Let them do their job instead of talking about the next election. It reminds me of little children who refuse to face reality–stomp their feet and turn their backs. That attitude does not become adults whom we have elected to represent our interests and our hope for the future.

I just went to the Republican website and had a good laugh. It is like the Republican Party beginning to use computers for the first time and they are running on Tandy Machines in 2009. It ran so slow with bad buffering, plain and drab too. They listed "National Leaders" that consisted of about 15 Old White Men, Only 2 women (Palin not included thank God), one Indian (Jindal) and no other minorities ( Hispanics or Blacks).

If this is the manner by which they will demonstrate to the public how they are going across the country listening to the public and being inclusive of all. Great job Republicans. Keep it up. If this is your way of moving forward, I am sure you will have the support of the Democratic Party also.

Twitter, text, email, Facebook, Myspace, Yourspace, whatever, the Republicans can't seem to grasp that it is not the form of their communication, but it's content. They have not seem to grasp the gravity of the world economic repression, the environmental problems looming for our future, or have any sensible solutions. If I hear one more time that tax cuts to the wealthiest will trickle down to fix all this, I'll flog them with my tea bags. (Is that considered a form of torture Dick?)

the bush years, john mccain selecting palin, meghan flapping her jaws were probably the major reasons many republicans, independents, nra members, and others voted for obama. obama/biden were the lesser of two evils and they were a change from the bush years. the economy melting down just before the election also drove many to vote for obama. as long as meghan keeps flapping her jaws trying to represent all republicans, the more many will be inclined to vote for obama next round and the more many will continue to support obama even in his continous screw ups.

The real problem with the republican party is that they have broken into two distinct factions. 1) The country club republicans (upper class, fiscal conservatives), and 2) The NASCAR republicans (religious right). These two groups really have VERY little in common. It's the most comical, bizarre political alliance that I've ever seen. I think we'll see a new, third party emerge in the near future. The republican party is making a serious mistake now by going so aggressively after Obama who has been in power for only 105 days. The party is in denial. Several surveys show that a large majority of Americans believe he is on the right track. These are the people who voted for him. The republicans have to listen to these people by convincing them with better solutions instead of telling them why Obama is always wrong. The republicans had 8 years to mess everything up, how can they be so smart now to convince the nation that Obama has no vision, no intention, no ability to lead the nation. Come on folks. Try to connect better with the nation. Bush seems to be very smart by staying quiet for now. He knows that he failed. Did he have good intention? of course, he did. Cheney, Limbaugh, Hannity need to follow BUSH's example. Please shut up. Talk until your voice can be heard. Now is not the time for NO, NO, NO.Be smart! Try to organize the party. Join Obama in rebuilding the nation. Show your positive intentions. Reconnect with the nation. Recognize the past mistakes. If you can do that, people will start listening again. THey will trust you. You will not be the party of NO, but a party in the opposition. You can still oppose Obama without being hateful and selfish. Stop denying the truth. You are not trusted. Regain your trust first.

  61. Simple Truth

What the Republican party plans to do is once again create a phony illusion or perception for the purpose of conning voters into actually voting against their own interests.
The Republican party believes that government exists only for the benefit of corporations and executives and that all other branches of government should be eliminated. They believe corporations should not pay taxes and not be regulated in any way. The Republican party in all truthfulness is just an extension of big business, much like the chamber of commerce. They care nothing about ordinary Americans and feel that their jobs should be outsourced or replaced by an illegal immigrant. Learn to compete in the global economy they say.
Its time for Americans to drive a stake in the heart of the multinational corporate governed Republican party and send a message to other political parties that you better focus on representing the will of the people and not some worthless, greedy, unethical and short sighted multinational corporate agenda.

Young voters should be deeply offended at this. As if technology is all they care about and as if by copying Obama the Republicans can court young voters. All the GOP needs to do is look in the mirror and into their heartless hearts.

I agree with Miss McCain; fhroughout modern times, the GOP has been the party of the angry white male as they ostracize all of the minority groups. It does not matter if they embrace technology if the people do not want to hear their message. What is happening to them is a matter of the "chickens coming home to roost" because many of the good ol' boys have abandoned the GOP philosophy. Even they realize the GOP message and agenda is outmoded, stale, and not inclusive.

They must really return to being the party of Lincoln if they want to regain power; they allowed the Democratic Party to wrest this mantle away from them during the Civil Rights era, while the GOP became the party of white males only.

Futhermore, the people are tired of GOP politicians taking their cues and talking points from radio commentators and far right-wing fanatics who only want to make money at the expense of their party. That kind of talk has gone the way of the dinosaur in the 21st century.

Look, the GOP only needs to return to their true principles, exemplified by Colin Powell, Brent Scowcroft, Dick Lugar, etc. That is, calm, pragmatic, and reasonable. Right now, the GOP is conveying fear and panic. Calling Obama a socialist? That is immature. Who wants to vote for a party whose leading voices are screaming wild-eyed that the sky is falling?

The GOP will be back in power as soon as they calm down and stop shouting. That's the lesson the GOP needs to learn from Obama – maturity.

"technology of today" will not connect to young people....it is what you say that is important...and thus far the Republicans fail to understand the diversity that young people accept and the prejudices of their parents and grandparents had in the 20th century. It is not HOW you communicate but what it is you are trying to communicate.

The best example would be in the generational view of developing renewed relations with Cuba among Cuban Americans in Florida.

What the Republicans constantly overlook both in the results of the election and in the present polls is that President Obama has incredible leadership skills, his temperment and intelligence and actually lives his family values.

It's a shame that a 24 yr old understands that embracing technology isn't going to solve the GOPs problems. The GOP needs to understand that they can believe in their general philosophy if the wish, but that philosophy may not work in every situation. We are in the middle of an economic crisis in which spending is virtually non existent among consumers and businesses. The GOP has be talking about freezing spending, continuing tax cuts that really helps no one but the wealthy, and they have had no new ideas to help combat the difficulties we are now faced with as a nation. The president extended his hand to them early on, even including some of their ideas into the stimulus bill. They decided to not work with him and haven't produce any new alternatives. When you produce nothing and support nothing they you become nothing.

Just saw the program. Romney and Cantor are in deep DENIAL. Firstly, yes, the GOP candidate lost by a large margin this last election and it was not only because of the economy. Secondly, voters didn't just vote for Obama because of the economy-women, hispanics, pro-choicers, suburbanites, etc. voted because of his message. Time to move into this century! Stop stuffing your morals down the throats of all Americans and STOP THE NEGATIVITY towards our President and then maybe we can talk. Note to Cantor and Romney: Yes, it is the message and the messenger!

P.S. Could some tell Amy Holmes that President Obama's approval ratings match George W's b/c the Democrats gave Bush the benefit of the doubt in 2001, the Republicans are not giving Obama a chance. Hence the alleged equal ratings. Dems and Independents overwhelmingly support our President. Obama will leave in 8 years with approval ratings nothing near Bush's.

Newsflash: the media is not the message. Barak Obama is President because in real time–at all times– he oozes intelligence, composure, compassion, and genuinely good purpose.

John McCain is not President, because in real time he could not differentiate the terms, Sunni, Shia, Irani and Al Quida, and he said Iraq borders Afghanistan when it does not; because he publicly freaked out about economic solutions he absolutely and admittedly does not understand; because he doesn't know how many houses he owns; and because he gambled America's future by putting forth a candidate for Vice President who stood up there and spoke of 'Real Americans' as though some of us were not. I took that personally, and it seems I wasn't alone.

The cameras will roll and they cannot lie. When Republicans show intelligence, composure, compassion, and genuinely good purpose, I for one will welcome the uplifting of the American debate. I'm listening.

Time is running out on the GOP, if they don't get their ish together, they'll become a distant memory. The largest voting block of the GOP are baby boomers and they're collecting Social Security, 20 years from now that voting block will be dead and gone.

Meanwhile, the GOP has a huge image problem when you have the likes of Coulter, Limbaugh, Hannity, and Steele being the face and mouthpiece for the GOP, it's the perfect recipe for political disaster. Republicans have no agenda, their recruitment is at an all time low, and their constant infighting makes me wonder how long they can last.

The likes of Coulter, Palin, Hannity, Cheney, Limbaugh, Gingrich make the republicans look really bad. There is nothing wrong with being a republican. Powell, McCain and so many other republicans are well respected. I don't think Powell will never be a democrat, but he is respected by all democrats. I believe in the resurrection of the party that must be done without the names listed above. It is time for rebuilding. The party can not rebuild with these people. The party can even rebuild with O'reilly. He is a true republican, a little hateful sometimes, but more social. At least, he had the courage to criticize his own party. He showed that he could sit down with Obama without being disrespectful. He gained a lot more respect after that interview. America needs both parties. Although I support Obama, its unfortunate that he is leading with a majority of democrats in congress. It will get worse if Limbaugh, Coulter, Cheney, Hannity continue to be the voice of the party. Americans are not stupid. The surveys are real. Blaming Obama for everything will make the party weaker. Americans will not support those who want Obama=America to fail. The nation will fail with the failure of Obama. Bush's failure has such a great impact on every American's life. Do the republicans really want the nation to continue to fail? Colin Powell is not Specter. The nation comes before everything. What a great hero? When will we recognize Powell as one of the greatest Americans of the last three decades?

The country would be best served by breaking the GOP up into several parties, 1)the Christian Conservative party, 2) the Social Conservative Party, and a party that would prefer to distance itself from everything that the Republican party stands for 3)the Intellectual Moderate Party.
The first step would be for the Republican party to apologize for the last eight years. The Cheney/Bush administration is as close as this country has ever come to a dictatorship.

Republicans are INCAPABLE of changing anything, especially their "message" because they are totally egocentric. They think they are "right" all the time and entitled to lead this country because they claim the moral high ground - where was the moral high ground when bush led this country to a totally unfounded war. I watched Cantor, Romney and Bush this morning and all I could think of was the three stooges. If they want a different message they should start listening to Ms. McCain and put her out there. 86. 21% of Americans are TRAITORS for wanting America to FAIL and 79% of Americans to SUFFER!

President Obama gave the electorate his vision of what he would do to change. We do not want leaders that only malign the government and try to starve it by lowering taxes without actually fixing it, we want someone that will FIX the government so the current tax dollars we spend will be spent efficiently. He is fulfilling his campaign promises made to the majority that voted for him, just as we would expect him to. Repubs call it big government, Dems call it compassion.

Here are a few poll numbers:

The majority of Americans are ok with "big government" at this time since, according to Keynesian economics the government is the only entity left standing after private investments and consumer spending have shut down.

You neo-cons lost by 7% points 53% to 46% that was highest Dem majority since Carter

Obviously, the majority of Americans do NOT agree with the repub ideology.

And as to the complaints of "socialism" President Obama is only following a road BUILT by republicans. GWB was President when we bought AIG, Freddie and Fannie and paid the first installment on GM and Chrysler.

So complain all you want about "tax cuts" and "trickle down" economics, because the only one's listening are the party base.

Meghan McCain seems to be the face of the new conservative moment – whatever comes out in the wash after the current Republican Party disintegrates. It's too bad she's not ready yet, because even as a liberal I understand the need for a conservative counterbalance. I'd just prefer one that has a sense of the times, and understands that that fiscal conservatives have a future – social conservatives do net.

Yes, eventually the dust will clear and the new normal will be established, and people will be on the left and right of that new norm, but for now the message is clear "Republicans, take your race-baiting, gay bashing, immigrant hating, knee-jerk religious ideals and stick them where the sun don't shine."

And yes there are gay Republicans. The Log Cabin Republicans are very real. It is not a typo. This kind of thinking is just a symptom of the Party's problems.

If Cantor thinks that adopting new technology is going to fix the GOP's problems, he is deluding himself. The Republicans have to adopt a whole new philosophy if they intend to become a national party again. The Party of NO must develop new ideas because the American public no longer accepts their old policies. The American public has also learned that Republican voodoo economics do not work as evidenced by the financial mess we now find ourselves in.

Republicans have lost their way. They talk conservatism but they went on a spending binge and forgot all about conservatism when they were governing the country. Republican's new found conservatism is the height of hypocrisy. Good luck trying to save your party by imitating Obama's use of technology.

    Greg,

I agree with you on most of your comments, but I disagree with you on Gingrich, Newt stepped to the plate and called out some of his colleagues, but in typical neo-conservative fashion, his colleagues responded with excuses and finger pointing instead of embracing constructive criticism from one of their own.

As for Powell, he's definitely one of the most highly respected Republicans in American politics, but least we forget, he was used by his own party (Cheney nor Bush had the credibility to sale the war in Iraq to the world or the american people, Powell was the only one who could have done it) and if his own party screwed him over, they'll screw anyone.

The GOP has too many factions within their party with their own agendas, and as long as that continues, they'll always look like the party of obstructionists and the party of "I don't have a bleeping clue as to what I'm doing but I'm going to do it anyway because looks and sounds good"

Hey STRONG>> what is the deal with the teleprompter tissue? Why is the desire to communicate a clear coherent statement a bad thing? When gives his press conferences he gives three part answers without a teleprompter. Can your party do that? Can your party even read a prompter? Nope, didn't think so.

Most comments are saying the same think what repubicans need to do and I just don't understand why they still don't get it. I think they really don't read all the comments like I know President Obama really do which help the President out. President Obama is for the people and the Repubicans are for their party that is how Obama won not some technology.

Miss Meghan definitely has laser point accuracy, when describing her political party at present. Too bad the old cronies are not listening – YET. Unfortunately, those of us with more centrist core values will be very wary of a charming and eloquent young woman with obvious political aspirations who knows absolutely ZERO about working hard to get what she wants. I do not mean to malign Meghan McCain, but she has absolutely no clue what it takes to start with nothing, work hard, then achieve success and want to bring those beginners with us to the top. She was born uber-rich. Not a criticism, just an observation. Comments most welcome

News flash: People don't want better-marketed Republicans, they want better Republicans.

Quit trying to legislate our personal behavior (abortion, marijuana, marriage, religious beliefs, behind-closed-doors behavior, etc.) and concentrate on keeping the rich and powerful people and the businesses they control on the correct path. Show a little morality, would you?

We need the wealthy to be a part of our country, not the only part. Making obscene amounts of money is OK with me, but when they start using the Federal Treasury as their personal piggy bank, gutting our economic system in the process, that's when the Republicans need to step up and help the rest of us get them under control.

Another suggestion... Quit whining all the time. We've got a smart, committed, right-thinking president at the helm. Get used to it and quit your blubbering! It's a great party and we'd love to have your support as we make up for the last clown and his band of pinheads.

Yes Eric, the GOP's embrace of technology will fix the GOP's problems – NOT!

First – you have to have enough folks on the other end of the technology who care to listen to your same, worn out, broken record of tax cuts for the wealthiest and trickle down economics. The last 8-years of you guys proved that philosophy is an abject failure.

The GOP leadership haven't learned or changed but keep trying to polish the same turd to a sparkling luster and shine – Eric, it is still a turd!

I have yet to hear ONE republican simply say the democarats had a better candidate when it comes to Obama's election. They dance around the issue blaming social and economic issues for the loss they took in November. They mention his excellent communication skills which are obvious, but they dont give President Obama the credit he deserves and it makes me sick. I find it curious how they hope and state aloud this hope that President Obama fails. Many dems didnt agree with bush policy but never verbally stated we hope he fails. I find it infuriorating how the republicans are trying to rebuild their party on the NO on the disdain of the current president, on the hope he fails.

They should try to build a platform on actual ideas on actual fact and on ways they can win an election without importing fear, hate and biggotry.

You and others have recently shown a great interest in the teleprompter. Invented in 1950, the teleprompter isn't really all that remarkable you know. It is used by many, including but not limited to businesses, the news media, and politicans. Prior to President Obama, President Bush also used the teleprompter. I am sure many other presidents will continue the trend.

I just watched this interview with Romney and Cantor on CNN.

I think Romney and Cantor are dangerous with their very conservative views and was really glad to hear Romney's opinions when he wasn't on the campaign trail. Cantor is no different.

I think what the republicans need to learn – and they really need to learn it – is tolerance for other people. They cling to man's interpretation of what their god wants and that seems to be rights for straight white males.

They both went on about God saying marriage is between a man and a woman. They apparently don't understand any of the science or studies that show homosexuals to have brain chemistry and function of the opposite gender.

They think their god knows the only way people should live. They need to learn tolerance. I think that's what their god would want them to learn.

I had to reread Cantor's statement after reading all the comments here.....man!! So let me get this straight, Republicans are worried about their "image"? So "image" is what's more important than the state of American well being? "Image" is going to improve American lives? I gotta admit, John's daughter gets it and Republicans like Mr. Cantor don't. And one last thing. How is it that Mr. Limbaugh gets to spew his anti-American rhetoric and still be called a "leader"? What has he ever done to be called that? Who or what has he lead? That's like John McCain saying he'd been "tested" while sitting in the cockpit of an airplane that was sitting on an aircraft carrier waiting on orders from the real the Commander in Chief (who by the way was facing the "test")........

    May 3, 2009 01:23 pm at 1:23 pm |

It's not the image the GOP needs to revamp, it is their actions. In the last decade the GOP kept talking conservative, but went out of control on spending, interventionism, and privacy rights. They need to get back to real conservative values.

The Republican Party is so out of touch it's laughable. Twitter and Facebook can't help a party who can't seem to grasp that most of their hot issues are non-issues to the majority of Americans. Right now, they need to drop the social conservatives and blowhards. They represent a dwindling population who, quite frankly, are seen by many Americans as not only obsolete, but a little crazy in the face of what we're going through now.
Changing the delivery of a message that basically states that Obama is a socialist, gay loving, anti-christ changes nothing and contributes nothing to a debate. Offering tax cuts to corporations while they pay billions in bonuses to corrupt CEO's and lay off thousands in an unregulated financial environment has failed us. The same can be said about the bail out packages, but in the face of no other viable solutions coming from the other side, what are we to do? At least there's some regulation now. The Republicans need to keep their mouths shut until they can offer some well thought out alternatives that amount to more than failed, trickle down economics.

Eric Cantor actually said some things that made sense! No intelligent thinking person will believe that Republicans can change overnight, but they will have to seriously change if they ever want to gain back any respectability! They can't just blow smoke up our -– and expect us to believe that they aren't the same as they were. They have a lot to prove to the American people, and most of us aren't willing to take what they say at face value.

It seems the Republicans think the majority of Americans are mindless sheep, willing to buy anything as long as it's in a nice shiny package.

They are forgetting that the use of manufactured 'fear' of 'everything and everyone' was what got them votes. But the truth is out about them...and no sane person believes anything they say.

So I say let them try to market the Republican Brand anyway they can: 'Classic Republican', 'Republican Lite', 'Green Republican', 'Republican Hybrid', 'Techno Republican', 'Cool Republican', 'Natural Republican'...because either way, it will still leave a bad taste in your mouth.

This will be very much like the failed attempt to market 'high fructose corn syrup' as a 'good' thing..lol

Megan McCain sound like the new voice for the Republican Party. Only if the stuborn "White Only Party" would listen. In these days and time you cannot rule and control anything with a "White Only" attached to it. That's what the Republican Party has always been and viewed as. They need to change their hearts. Try spreading love instead of hate. That's why it's so important to educate our children. It help to change their mind-set from thinking like old Republicans that still practice and think "I'm superior", "I'm better than them", "I should have and be in control" type mentality. The only way either Party will survive is to be willing to include everyone, regardless of whether we agree of disagree. The new America represent "Freedom" not "Division".
