WASHINGTON (CNN) – Then-Sen. Barack Obama's name may have been everywhere during the presidential campaign, but it did not make the top 1000 most popular picks for babies. Still, it gained popularity.
During 2008, the new president's first name ranked 2,409th on the Social Security Administration's annual list of the most popular baby names. That's a jump of more than 10,000 spots from the name's previous ranking in the 12,535th spot during 2007.
"President Obama's popularity peaks among Americans under the age of 30, who are, in turn, most likely to be having babies," says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland.

Go Lori in Huston!! I don't even have to post my comment now – you said it all.
Whine and complain, complain and whine – another day in the life of Republican America.
i would love to name my son Barack.
This is garbage. The people that comment here are one of the following...
Liberal: Oh my God. Obama is SO kewl. George Bush is SATAN!
Conservative: Oh my God. Obama is a communist/Muslim.
Get a grip people! Obama isn't the messiah and Bush isn't the devil. The media is completely unreliable as far as I'm concerned. I just hope people snap out of this polarized trance and get back to improving the country. WAKE UP!
How is this news? Give me a break – his name is weird – people who would name a child "Barrack" should have their head examined!!!! LOL
Sooo much hate here. Looks like the mask (or hood) is off the republican party now.
What do you think parents will regret more? Naming their kid Obama or voting for Obama?
Where is the name "Barry" on the list?
I’m naming my kid “Deficit”, after Obama and the Democrats.
The Barack in the Bible did not do what God asked him & his power was passed to a woman. Go Palin, Go!
Elliot says that "Barack" is un-American. Unless you're like my great-great grandmother, who was Cherokee, your ancestors were immigrants to this country.
"Barack" means "blessing" in Arabic. Our country could use all the blessings it can get these days, after 8 years of economic, political and foreign policy mis-management.
BTW, "Elliott" is the diminutive of the last name, Elias, which is found in the Greek, Portuguese, German, Scandinavian, Finnish, English languages and is a cognate of "Elijah," from the Hebrew.
So by your reasoning, since your name derives from a non-English origin, your name is un-American, too.
Have a nice day!
Wow, it's truly amazing how certain people still consider only European/Western derived names to be "American" and everything else to be anti-American. Yet another indication of the fact that society continues to be stuck in the 18th century when it comes to tolerance and race relations. Pathetic.
Love it that this is driving all the conservative Christian haters crazy!
Interesting Fun Facts.
I am curious what the SA found after
The election of George W.
How many kids were named WALKER,
of JEB?
After all we should given equal time to the Bush Babies.
No Jackson, they're naming their kids "Barack", not "Dubya". You've got the wrong president.
Just goes to show you that most of the people in this nation are just "sheep", no mind of their own. How sad, that you can't name your child on your own....gotta follow the leader. I had my children's names picked from the time I was ten years old. No leader or Hollywood movie star could have swayed me from being my own person, still can't.

I'm sure Adolph was big in Germany for a while too.

Ahhh Dennis....always the menace...
I wonder how many parents named their kids Adolf 50 years ago? He too was a good speaker. And he did not even have the advantage of a teleprompter.
Man, you people are the pettiest, most nit-picky, can't see the forest for the trees people I have ever witnessed in all my 48 years. You find fault with ANYTHING (the man could fart a different smell than you and you'd find a way to see that as un-American). You are mirroring your so-called media elite (Rush, O'Reiley, Coulter, Hannity) to a T. You deserve the repub leaders you are stuck with now. Ya know, nothing changes unless it changes – can't change by staying the same. Breathe in some fresh air, already!
Jackson,
Yes, that is unfortunate for those children named George.

….and what if he turns out to be the worst president ever? Wouldn't that suck for those babies?

KC
PRESIDENT Barack Obama's accomplishments so far are enough for anyone holding is name to be proud of!!!!!
African Americans and Muslims are the people who are picking his name.
You will not get a white person from Ohio naming his or her child that
It is understandable they would name their children with his name. They are proud and should be and given that 99% of African Americans voted for him due to his race and not his politics.
Oh Please!! The Dems just can't stand or stay with American, can they.
Anybody naming their kids Dick, Piper, Bristles, Willow, Trigger, Tripper?
Anybody notice how many responses and what they said when Jack Cafferty asked a question about legalizing marijauana. CNN is the number 1 news outlet for dopers and Obama lovers.
Also, Barack means peach in German! What a great name. =)
Dan, there were ten thousand babies named Barack. Also one guy named his daughter Dubya Newt Rush.
