WASHINGTON (CNN) – Then-Sen. Barack Obama's name may have been everywhere during the presidential campaign, but it did not make the top 1000 most popular picks for babies. Still, it gained popularity.
During 2008, the new president's first name ranked 2,409th on the Social Security Administration's annual list of the most popular baby names. That's a jump of more than 10,000 spots from the name's previous ranking in the 12,535th spot during 2007.
"President Obama's popularity peaks among Americans under the age of 30, who are, in turn, most likely to be having babies," says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland.

I hear the wingnuts are naming their babies "Dubya" – that is Greek
for "miserable failure"
I know a couple with a 3 year old named Barak, so the name has been around for a while; I also considered Malia for my daughter years ago; it's a pretty Hawaiian name.
Barack is a pretty cool name but Hussein has some negative connotations because of Saddam of course. But I guess that's a common Muslim name so oh well. Barack is cool because it's popular and still unusual.
Obama is a great man who did a great thing. Of course people will feel proud to names their children after him. Look folks stop your partisan bickering for once and recognize the greatness that Barack Obama have achieved already. He's not some evil, nefarious, undercover-socialist, hell bent on destory the world for the good God fearing "real" Americans. He is simple the President of the United States that was democratically elected. Disagree with his policies if you must, but you have to honor the greatness ot the man!
I would be honored to have a child or grandchild named Barack. It is a beautiful name.
Actually, I knew a family that had named their child Barack (they pronounced it bear-ack) about 10 years ago. A white, Mormon family from Utah. I also know a heck of a lot of Dave's. So, was the Mormon family un-American, or are all of the Dave's parents just faddish? For people to judge another based upon their name is just another form of bigotry.
Its a cool name, and I think its flattering that so many people name their kids that. Its different, and not so "plain Jane". Notice how the name Joe has fallen to the bottom of the list after Mccain brought us joe the "plumber" (who isnt a plumber or named joe) HAHA, had to add that, sorry...
If Barrack actually convert from Islam to Christianity, doesn't it seem like he would have gone back to Barry?
I met a newborn Barack just a little after the election.
Kind of shows you how easily the sheep follow doesn't it.
The American people are sheep following their new messiah.
My name is BARACK and I'm very proud of it!
Dont EVER you name your child Rush Limbaugh...he may end up as a drug addict and one suffering from delusional amnesia and foaming in the mouth!!!!
This infatuation with Obama is scary!
Tyran Obama is a great man who did a great thing. Of course people will feel proud to names their children after him. Look folks stop your partisan bickering for once and recognize the greatness that Barack Obama have achieved already. -----------------
What has he done, what has he achieved? If you mena honor him becuase he became President then you needed to the same for Bush. He was elected to two terms!
"Barack".......nope, I'm just not feeling it.....That's like......a boy name Sue.....
Barack is a Bible name.
I'm sure Adolph was big in Germany for a while too.
What is fascinating about America is its ability to rebound as fast as it dropped. This name was very scary to millions several months ago and look where it is at in 2009. America, I am glad you are finally taking your rightful place in the world stage. Keep it up Baby! This Canadian surely loves you!
for all you haters...The name Barack is in the bible.... ooh I forgot , you don't read
I actually did consider Barack as our baby's name, he's due in July. But we settled on a less controversial name instead. My conservative REP dad would have had a fit, lol
I find it very interesting that many of you which have negative comments on people naming their child Barack, dont have an issue with people naming their child, George, John, Thomas and Ted..Get over your hate. He's the first and many people are proud to wittness history and want their childern to bare the name and wittness to the greatness of our beloved country...Get over it!
It's not stunning that the name's popularity would increase. It would probably be better to wait until he has been president for a while though. It would suck to grow up with the name Barack if he turns out to be the worst president ever, which so far isn't out of the realm of possibility.
I like it better than the tiresome names of Emily, Jacob, Olivia, Aiden, etc.
I have never seen so many hater's. We should be proud that we have a President who is respected by many. Remember we are Americans. Let's remember what happen to the Roman Empire it wasn't the enemy from without, it's within. Don't be deceived. Pray for those in authority to do what's right.
The great thing about this Country if you don't like the name Barack..You don't have to give that name to your child, but to those who do..What a joy it will be for them when they grow up and realize who they are named after.
