Name 'Barack' soars in popularity, government says

The president's first name showed a dramatic leap in popularity from 2007 to 2008, according to the Social Security Administration.
The president's first name showed a dramatic leap in popularity from 2007 to 2008, according to the Social Security Administration.

WASHINGTON (CNN) – Then-Sen. Barack Obama's name may have been everywhere during the presidential campaign, but it did not make the top 1000 most popular picks for babies. Still, it gained popularity.

During 2008, the new president's first name ranked 2,409th on the Social Security Administration's annual list of the most popular baby names. That's a jump of more than 10,000 spots from the name's previous ranking in the 12,535th spot during 2007.

"President Obama's popularity peaks among Americans under the age of 30, who are, in turn, most likely to be having babies," says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland.

I can't believe how many non Obama supporters are still out there. Do you have any idea how much worse things would still be if Palin/Mccain won? It must be all those whites that only understand the GOP language.

Forget swine flu. Judging by these comments, there's been a severe outbreak of sour grapes since January. It doesn't help that people have been chasing those sour grapes with Rush Limbaugh's homemade Kool-aid

More about the Obama worship in this country. Why is this news? Oh, because the media outlets haven't out their daily "we love Obama" message yet.

    I have a question actually -

This article references the name "Barack" as having jumped in popularity from the 12,000's to the 2,000's -- yet the SSA site only lets you search the top 1000 names for popularity. Does anyone know of another site that lets you dig deeper? We named our daughter a unique name and I'd love to know where it ranked; surely somewhere, but not in the top 1000.

  8. Is it 2013 yet?

I wouldn't name my dog Barack, maybe Michelle though.

This garbage with this false worship of a never done anything fraud has officially "jumped the shark".

Where is the story with the list of Democrats including Pelosi that WERE told ALL about the techniques being used by our heroes to get information to save lives and yet they LIED about knowing anything?

One and done, we are paying attention with the exception of the bahhhhhhhhh, sheep.

The name Barack is African, not Muslim. It's actually derived from Hebrew.

I am so glad we have Obama. He has been better than Bush ever was. The right wing hates him because he exposes their hypocrisy by doing the moral and right things.

Jackson, you think President Obama is the worst president in history after just 100 days in office. Where have you been for the past 8 years! Must have had you head in your @$$! He has done more in 100 days than Bush did in the past 8. The first 100 days has been used to correct the blunders of the Bush Leadership or lack thereof. Bush is not only the worst president in American history, but the dumbest as well! FACT....

Wow. Earlier in the week people complained about President Obama ordering mustard on his hamburger. Now it's Americans who name their babies after him. Some people just aren't happy unless they are complaining about something. Look, I understand you people lost the election, but grow up!

Gee....I recall that the dems lost in '00 and '04..... never heard YOU stop complaining!

    Barack – 2409th
    George – 153rd

Reminds me of when CNN said the unemployment rate "soared" and "skyrocketed" from 6.2% to 6.6% last Nov. around electio time.

But when it just went from 8.5% to 8.9% it's "A little less bleak." Nope, no bias there.

Republicans are now reduced to micro criticizing.

I can understand complaining if Obama lied about WMD, but complaining about mustard or Elmo, that's just sad.

You need to turn of the radio and turn off Fox News.

LMAO people with your labels. You throw around words like "sheep", "liberals", etc and feel as if you know something no one else does. Hahaha. All it means is that you have so many opinions that you can't hear or see what is really going on around you. Just remember, opinions are common but wisdom is not! Instead of talking so much, try shutting up and listening for a change. You don't have to agree with everything you hear, but you may just learn something. Or is learning too liberal for you??? Silly rabbits.

Barack-'N'Roll!!! BAAAAAAAAAH! (best sheep impression). ROFLMFAO

What a special picture. I'm sure that child will cherish the photo in years to come. To the haters on here, you don't have to explain why, how, or when you didn't like the name Barack. Your comments provide us with all the answers about your character that we already knew. You will raise haters, and they will raise haters. We as Americans who truly love what that word means, will try to change your childrens and your grandchildrens minds, with love and understanding, but society will let them know how ignorant and racists you were just by the beliefs that you passed on. Hope you are happy with that legacy.
