Name 'Barack' soars in popularity, government says

The president's first name showed a dramatic leap in popularity from 2007 to 2008, according to the Social Security Administration.
The president's first name showed a dramatic leap in popularity from 2007 to 2008, according to the Social Security Administration.

WASHINGTON (CNN) – Then-Sen. Barack Obama's name may have been everywhere during the presidential campaign, but it did not make the top 1000 most popular picks for babies. Still, it gained popularity.

During 2008, the new president's first name ranked 2,409th on the Social Security Administration's annual list of the most popular baby names. That's a jump of more than 10,000 spots from the name's previous ranking in the 12,535th spot during 2007.

"President Obama's popularity peaks among Americans under the age of 30, who are, in turn, most likely to be having babies," says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland.

Some of you on here are absolutely ridiculous!

I read these comments and they make me laugh!

A name is a name – just because they sound foreign doesnt mean they dont have great meanings!

People are getting tired of the plain jane names! I mean we have people naming their kids Bronx and Apple – but who are we to criticize?!

Don't judge a book by it's cover – or a man by his name.

To Muslims, Hussein is a cool name.

Would you say that to the face of a 'Muslim' or are you too much of a apple pie 'Country First' Coward?

Go turn on some Lee Greenwood and gain some weight.....

….and what if he turns out to be the worst president ever? Wouldn't that suck for those babies?
    ----------------------–
No president ever has to worry about that. We've had Dubya, and there is no way to fail completely and utterly to the point that the republicans/conservatives did based on him. All presidents to come can now rest assured that they can NOT be the worst. So I guess Dubya did something good after all, assured all future presidents of not being the worse.

It's a fact! He failed in EVERY category. Didn't keep us safe, didn't win either of two wars (one of which was illegal), didn't catch Osama, left EVERY child behind, property value lower, un-employment higher, image lower, stock market lower, torture carried endorsed, health care worse, war on drugs failed, defecit worse.

So, sorry to inform you, but it's not a worry that a president will ever fail in every single category you can judge, such as the republicans have done. GOOD JOB!

What a stretch for a "feel-good" story. #2049 are you kidding?

How about printing some important numbers like $36,000 the amount EACH US citizen (even those named Barack) will have to pay to fund all of the President's spending.

Naming your child with an overwhelmingly statement-making name is incredibly selfish and insensitive.

These people who name their kids "Magic Johnson Thompson" (etc) as homage to their favorite celebrities are only making their children's lives difficult in school and in life, which is hard enough as it is.

    **************PLEASE post CNN************************************

@ Ed Detroit, Mich.......... Ed, Barack Obama IS a Christian! Please GOOGLE....... "Barack" and SEE for yourself ........ that Barack is from the OLD TESTAMENT.

Good grief, man! Think for yourself instead of believing every LIE that the far-right-spews!

"Barack" IS OF HEBREW ORIGIN. MEANING BLESSED. Dear GOD, these ..... conservatives claim to be Christians....... but from their mean, downright hateful comments........ I wonder!

And WHY do some of you, far-right-folks, hate Muslim so much? IT IS THE SAME AS HATING THE JAPANESE OR THE GERMANS FOR ALL THE KILLING THEY DID IN WWII! NUTS.

OMG "people" are naming their babies Obama. I dont believe it. Thats like calling them failure, hype, disappointment, liar, phony, teleprompter, and all the other cute nicknames that the new president will be hearing soon (many already). OB will be known as the worst president ever elected. Has he done anything yet for main street or the sheeple? Trillons for bank of america, nothing to help keep jobs here or save peoples homes. All hype

I'm glad his mother knew what the meaning of the name was before she gave it to their child. Unlike the palin's who just give stupid names out the blue. Maybe that's why her children are so screwed up. People need to realize a name is just not a name. It is so much more. It guides the way a person will be in life and what they can achieve. Bravo to our president!

Pretty lame when the obama supporters keep talking about "the mess he was handed"....Google Illinois, and see what kind of mess is going on there that he left for someone else. If he plans to do in the whole US what has happened in Illinois, then yes we will need a real saviour.

All you silly republicans need to stop hating. YOUR SIDE LOST! Get over it and move on with your lives. I thought you loved OUR country? Looks like you love it as long as you are in the driver's seat. Well, one thing hasn't changed: love it ...or leave it. We'll be fine without you!

So how is this a surprise to anyone?
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr was named for a great man, a mover and shaker in the world.

Barack Obama has already established his place in history simply by winning the election. It is a name that will be revered in US history and more specifically in US black history for generations to come.

Besides Barack means Blessed. Isn't that a wonderful gift to give your child? Because Blessed how both parents and child should feel about each other.

We named our middle child Kevin Nathanial (Handsome Beloved Gift of God), because he is.

This is a beautiful picture. A lot can be learned of a person by the way they hold babies.

Independent_me – thanks for your post. I enjoy reading names that have a message/meaning. Much more interesting than just plain Joe Smith. lol

I named my new dog barack......

He pees everywhere and blames it on Bush......

He cannot bark without a Teleprompter.....

    So,.....

I took his food and gave it to the cat.....

I make him pay for water......

I make him apologize for being a dog......

I humiliate him with taunts about his real birthplace......

I just don't like him very much at all.........
