Name 'Barack' soars in popularity, government says

The president's first name showed a dramatic leap in popularity from 2007 to 2008, according to the Social Security Administration.
The president's first name showed a dramatic leap in popularity from 2007 to 2008, according to the Social Security Administration.

WASHINGTON (CNN) – Then-Sen. Barack Obama's name may have been everywhere during the presidential campaign, but it did not make the top 1000 most popular picks for babies. Still, it gained popularity.

During 2008, the new president's first name ranked 2,409th on the Social Security Administration's annual list of the most popular baby names. That's a jump of more than 10,000 spots from the name's previous ranking in the 12,535th spot during 2007.

"President Obama's popularity peaks among Americans under the age of 30, who are, in turn, most likely to be having babies," says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland.

I think its human nature to be inspired by names that they hear, the same as being inspired by a relative's name or even by a name that they hear in an everyday setting. Is it so terrible that some americans are inspired by our president?

I think it's terrible that we place so much prejudice on a person's name without taking into consideration anything else.

CNN what do you call this, lack of journalistic integrity or biased?

Robert May 8th, 2009 12:58 pm ET – Those babies will someday be paying off his stimulus packages.

Incorrect, they will all be broke because they won't be able to afford health care.

It’s amazing the ignorance of the comments being made against President Obama’s name. First it shows how many people are drooling over the possibility that the president won’t be a successful leader. Well guess what morons, if the President fails we fail. What would have you thought of people during the last 8 years who might have said “I hope all of our troops get shot in Iraq, so we can see what a failure Bush is”? You would have probably would have accused them of being Un-American at best. Now wishing the president will fail in trying to save our economy, our jobs, and our role as leaders of the free world, what exactly does that make you?

Secondly even if President Obama (He IS the president so stop referring to him as president-elect, you lost get over it) isn’t 100% successful, he still has done so much to give hope to millions of Americans who prior may have seen the nation’s highest office as unobtainable. Any child being named Barrack now should be proud that they are carrying on a piece of history that clearly states “We shall over come”.

Thank you, Lori from Houston, Texas. Great comment! I am from Texas too. I completely agree with you, Lori. Some people would blame our President for anything and everything. Just leave him alone. Let him and us clean up your mess, you, Barack Obama's haters. I thank God everyday for this man. Help President Obama, support him, and defend him. Or crawl to your caves, jail cells, etc. and keep quiet! We will manage our lives and our country without you.

By the way, I love name ‘Barack’. It will be an honor to name my son or grandson ‘Barack’. It has an association with a great honorable man.

And on a similar note get over the Hussein bit. If people are so concerned about people having similar names to tyrant, it’s about time you realize America was founded during a revolt against Mad King George. In other words, grow up.

Well, it probably won't be as bad as you imagine. After all, George is a fairly common name and we've actually had some Presidential greats named George such as George Washington. So I guess the kids can just say they're named after Washington instead of the worst President in the History of the United States: George W. Bush.

So what? "Marx" has also gained popularity recently. And "Fidel."
(PS – I'm off to my charity volunteer work now...and then the homeless shelter tonight, giving blood in the morning, followed by a full weekend of Habitat For Humanity construction work, and then facebooking and twittering to the world about what a great humanitarian I am...just in case anyone is interested.)
