A homeless woman sits on a bench in Los Angeles, California.

LOS ANGELES (CNN) - The tears begin and her voice trembles as Ruth Martinez remembers the first few days of her new world.

She would leave work, pick up her son Jacob at school and drive aimlessly, sometimes sneaking back to the office, "to watch TV there without my boss knowing."

Her husband had lost his job, and the stress drove them apart. Then Martinez was evicted. Suddenly, her car was her home. And she was afraid to ask for help.

"We just prayed," Martinez told us. "And I was embarrassed because a Hispanic Latina does not ask for help. The way I was raised, you put your pride to the side and did what you had to do."

Rudy Salinas finds them in cars, under bridges, in abandoned homes, and even in protected trenches artfully dug by the military veterans who put survival skills learned in Iraq and Afghanistan to use in America's inner cities.

Don't worry obama will in time supply all needs to all people. We will just tax the producers more, and if that doesn't work, we can just print more money. The socialist utopia is coming soon.

Lori   May 9th, 2009 2:29 pm ET

Thank you 'Proud DHS Radical' and 'The Death of America by Obama.'. I blame you. It's because of people like you that ticked 'George W Bush's' name on the ballot TWICE that caused all these problems. A sarcastic 'thanks' from all of us who never voted for that man not once, and knew what he was about by 2004. I hope you're proud of yourselves. Are your parents brother and sister? Maybe that will explain how any human being could think George Bush was a superb President. What a disaster Bush and the Republicans were to this great country.

elliott   May 9th, 2009 2:22 pm ET

Maybe a real leader will emerge in 2012....

Scott   May 9th, 2009 2:21 pm ET

Wait until gas prices skyrocket again, the situation will become worse. High gas prices causes increase food prices, increase electricity prices and all sorts of increase in prices. Remember what happened during the Bush years. I wonder how many people knows how much control big oil has got on our politicians and the prices of things. If our president dont put some good oversight on big oil, stimulus will not work. Big is all ready getting their hand into the pie. Look at prices starting to creep up.

kgeukes   May 9th, 2009 2:18 pm ET

John King has no clue as to what's really going on out in the real world....He's been so sheltered by Bush and his cronies that he believes homelessness is a recent result of Obama being voted into office. It's been going on for years but it's much worse now because of all the bad mortgages and the loss of jobs thanks to the Repugs. A party to be proud of fer sure!!!! Now, John, how 'bout you taking some of these homeless people into your home so they can get back on their feet, eh??

America Shrugged   May 9th, 2009 2:06 pm ET

We need a single payer healthcare system. Take the burden of healthcare off the employers backs and maybe we will see a resurgence of family wage jobs in this country. Start investing in green technology and maybe we'll see a resurgence of family wage jobs in this country. Invest more in education, and maybe we'll have a populace that can compete with other other countries in technology jobs. We need to produce something other than war and debt in this country. I agree with Joan from Ontario that some in the media would have you believe that this is some new phenomenon with Obama winning the election. I feel for this woman in the article, but I certainly would put aside my pride if I had a child, and ask for help.

Randolph Carter (Formerly Some Guy)   May 9th, 2009 2:00 pm ET

Here's what the news doesn't tell you. This phenomenon is largely due to the disappearance of public housing in America. Here's how the process works: Local housing authorities are in the back pocket of developers. Many times they are the same people. They tear down public housing and replace it with mixed income/mixed use developments. Everybody makes lots of money. They give the displaced residents housing vouchers and say, "look, they can move to a better neighborhood." Truth is the vouchers are generally only accepted by absentee landlords who offer substandard housing in other poor neighborhoods. Back at the shiny new development they let a bunch of seniors on fixed income (less likely to commit crime) back into some of the new housing units and tell the 6:00 news, "Look what we've done for these poor people and look at how the crime rate has improved". The other former residents either wind up in worse housing than before, far from their social network and services or out on the street. Poverty is essentially shifted from one area of the city to another. Progress, folks, progress. I wonder if CNN has the stones to post this. Have a nice day!

G NO P   May 9th, 2009 1:45 pm ET

Just give them a tax cut and tell them to get off their lazy butts and get a job, right Republicans? The Death of America by Obama, Proud DHS radical-You guys are part of the cause of all this. Hope you are happy with yourselves.

Texas Teacher   May 9th, 2009 1:28 pm ET

And how many others are just one payday away from losing everything?

andrew   May 9th, 2009 1:25 pm ET

If you blame obama for this then you need to go back to school and educate yourself.

only when people learn not to vote for the system   May 9th, 2009 1:22 pm ET

that works against them

they will be able to save themselves from the modern slavery and savagery.

only they can save themselves from themseves.

nick   May 9th, 2009 1:22 pm ET

Just one more indication of the anti-Obama material coming out of the mouth of the senior reporter from FOX NEWS.. I bet, John King amd Sean Hannity are related and attached at the hip.

How many homeless were there after Viet Nam, or the Great Depression John? Did your research tell you that? Do you dream up these stories? Is this what Senior Political reporters do? Please join Fox News, at least then your stories would be expected. You are a disgrace to your profession and to your undeserved status at CNN.

Simmy   May 9th, 2009 1:19 pm ET

I say to you, John King.....Find a home for every homeless person that you interview....Don't exploit their plight and leave them feeling worst than they did before you pointed your lens in their faces.....Do your part to help someone else in these trying times....Or leave them alone....

Super MOD   May 9th, 2009 1:13 pm ET

Here is an idea. Take the remaining 96% of the stimulus package that has not been spent and us it to buy up foreclosed properties. Then, the government can rent the houses for $100-200 a month to the homeless with a clause that states the person has to maintain the house to certain standards or face eviction. These can include keeping the inside clean and making sure the lawn is kept up. If the person does not have a job, drop the rent to 10% of their unemployment or assistance benefits. This would remove the houses off the books of the banks and prevent neighborhoods from falling apart with unoccupied houses.

barking republican ankle biters   May 9th, 2009 1:12 pm ET

I want John King to live with the homeless for a month, hes all talk and no action.

Jeremy   May 9th, 2009 1:11 pm ET

Is John King accusing hard working Obama of problems Bush and republicans like himself caused or what is the point in his reporting? Where did Wolf go? We need intelligent reporter to take all that this time King is wasting. This guy is a big mess. Can not even ask an intelligent question. He makes Hannity and Beck look like babys!

Once upon a horse   May 9th, 2009 1:02 pm ET

I bet if we had elected McCain/Palin then we would no longer have any homeless people, right? In fact Sen McCain could probably put some up in one of his 7 houses!

Brad, California   May 9th, 2009 12:43 pm ET

Where have you been John?

All this stuff is happening everywhere and the American people have seen it first hand, long before you or any of your correspondent buds began reporting it, apparently attempting to show a human side to the disasterous Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Ashcroft, Gonzales years. Do you think you have some kind of monopoly, or that your reporting is really that much better better than seeing the result first hand by simply living within the real world? I guess reporting it just adds a little more depth to your shallow resume. Go back to the beltway.

Linda from Or   May 9th, 2009 12:41 pm ET

You know I read this kinda stuff every day. It's Obamas fault, It's Bushes fault. It's Fox news fault it's cnns fault.
How about it's the fault of the head whoevers and whatevers names that they go by, that have put greed, the others that are in this country
that are not suppose to be, the little turtles, and frogs ect. that take preference over and beyond Americans.
I live in a town in Oregon, (by the way before you start saying we are all a bunch of green hair do what you want to regaurdless of the cost)
we are not. We are however the second most unemployed state in the union.
In a town of only 23,000 their are people of all ages that have no place to live. Everything thay had is gone now. They can't leave and try over
again because they have no means of doing so.
It's not going to change until "we the people" start standing up for what is right in this country.
It would help if we really had a president that gave a hoot. And as far as it being Bushs problem.....maybe it was, but he's gone now time to quit pointing fingers and find something that works.

Derka Derr   May 9th, 2009 12:40 pm ET

The Death of America by Obama, you need a life, and really need to go back to school, ive seen your posts all over CNN, are you sick? typical white trash idiot if you ask me, your wasting your time talking to people far more brighter than yourself, maybe you should go back to school and figure out why we are where we are?!? hmm thats an idea, maybe you could take your parents with you also, the people whos bright ideas got us here. Derka Derr

tigerakabj   May 9th, 2009 12:37 pm ET

And John King, you guys just figured this out? People were broke and/or homeless long before Obama took office. I know John you are trying to get people to turn against Obama, calling this the "Obama recession," but at least make it less obvious what your intentions are.

I mean really, no sane person would expect him to fix 30 years worth of Reagan's trickle-down/deregulatory economics (put into overdrive by Bush) in 108 days. Plus Obama has 2 wars he has to clean up left by Bush, which is costing us billions a month. And he's got to get us off foreign oil, which again can't be done in 108 days.

John King, I know you are busy trying to erase the last 8 years from people's memory and thinking America is stupid. You can't and we aren't. Everyday I see Obama trying to get us on the path to recovery and then prosperity. I won't forget the last 8 years John King.

Same Old White House   May 9th, 2009 12:35 pm ET

Hurry. One of you democrats who are saying the economy has turned around needs to tell her. Im sure she will feel much better. What a mess, why dont you tell her?

The Truth   May 9th, 2009 12:35 pm ET

These are the facts of today's economy:

1. Republicans incharge of Congress for 12 years – last 6yrs of Clinton and first 6yrs of Bush.

2. Reagan turned $700b debt to $3trillion debt

3. Bush turned budgets surplus to budget deficit

4. Clinton increased $3t debt to $5t

5. Bush duobled to debt to $10t with no growth in the economy

6. Obama inherited a messed up economy laden with poor schools, zero infrastructure, etc

7. Obama wants to improve education, Scientific research, return to domestic manufacturing etc.

John King you will never report this issues but ones that is a GOP talking point. If you read this, try and change your reporting since you said you are a reporter and not a commentator.

jason, tx   May 9th, 2009 12:34 pm ET

It's sad and what's also sad is the righties will blame Obama for something their own did to this country.

Polly   May 9th, 2009 12:26 pm ET

Quit blaming Bush. It was a Democrat as President when Osama first declared war on America. It was many years and one failed try before they successfully demolished the Twin Towers. We've had plenty of time to figure out where he is. He declared war on us at least 7 years before 911 happened. It seemed like we failed at preventing it from happening.

Polly   May 9th, 2009 12:23 pm ET

It is most unfortunate that a single person with a full-time job cannot afford to live without help in our country, but it's true. How much more difficult it is for a mother to care for her children. Education is so important to singles and their children in order for them to better their lives. They must seek help in furthering their education.

New Republicans   May 9th, 2009 12:13 pm ET

These lazy old homeless people should learn how to compete in the global economy ! Remember pro life and tax cuts for the rich. Predatory capitalism rocks!!!!

stormerF   May 9th, 2009 12:09 pm ET

California wants to reduce some of the State workers benefits in an attemp to Balance their Budget,Obama tells them if they do they will lose stimulis money because the state workers are Union Members. So now we have Obama Blackmailing the state,So the state will have to raise Taxes on Businesses, and Businesses will have to lay more people off to stay in business.. WAA LAA, more un-employed and more Homeless.. Obama wants a welfare state, where all depent upon the government for all their needs...SO who will pay? you with a job will, its the only place Obama can get the money from, the Tax Payer.

pam Eugene OR   May 9th, 2009 12:06 pm ET

Proud DHS
No she did not vote at all. She is an illegal. I assume you just want to rip on OUR President and did not even read the whole story.
Most of these people did not become homeless in the last 100 days. It was you beloved Bush who created this problem and President Obama needs some time to work on it.

Tom   May 9th, 2009 12:01 pm ET

John King you use to be impartial, balanced, and objective, but now it seems you are just another brown nose without a back bone.

You have my sympathy.

Joan , Ontario   May 9th, 2009 11:49 am ET

Notice how John King always finds homeless people or people who are critical of Pres. Obama for his "out of Washington" pieces? You could have found lots of homeless and jobless people for the last eight years too. Could he ever find people who now do have a job because of the stimulus package or people who are pleased with this President's policies to get your country back on track and can see the glimmers of hope. Probably he won't look too hard. That's not on King's agenda. Economists as a whole seem to back your President and say it will take time to see the results. Warren Buffett, Bill Gates and now even Donald Trump have given him high marks for his needed agenda. They know what they are talking about. King, Bash, Griffen, Dobbs and sometimes Henry always cherry pick his speeches and find ways to make them negative. Wolf Blitzer's Sunday morning show was much more balanced and fair.

What a mess   May 9th, 2009 11:38 am ET

Thanks to Bush and all who voted for him...you caused all this misery. At least we now have the greatest president in the world and he's doing a terrific job fixing the mess. We will have him for 8 years...mark my words.

MsMurray   May 9th, 2009 11:16 am ET

In response to Proud DHS radical , President Obama has been in office for a little over 100 days. The economy did not turn for the worse 100 days ago.... What is the point of your comment?

Enlightened Voter   May 9th, 2009 11:06 am ET

Let's all give a big round of applause to bush and the republicans for ruining this country in just 8 short years!!!!! Horaah!!! And john king, this is the party you want to be a part of? No person with a conscience and who is enlightened could ever consider themselves republican.
Proud DHS radical – you can try to blam this on President Obama but deep down inside you know it was the man you voted for twice BUSH!

The Death of America by Obama   May 9th, 2009 11:05 am ET

I guess you voted for obama.
Too bad he lied to you.

Proud DHS radical   May 9th, 2009 10:57 am ET

There's some CHANGE you can believe in, wonder if she and her husband voted for Obama?

Franky   May 9th, 2009 10:56 am ET

That is unfortunate, very unfortunate. And is pretty much happening in the big cities, if I'm not mistaken(and correct me John if I'm wrong) but I think all the three biggest cities(L.A, New York and Chicago), all have unemployment numbers that are not good, which should make sense, no? Considering the population, ratio and diameter of how far each household separates one another. You know, I know here in Chicago, I know here the numbers have been rising, I know that for sure but haven't checked the numbers throughout the nation as a whole. Must be pretty bad, no? And is tough, it is tough, it does hurt me to see people striving to find something better, doesn't really matter what race or ethnic group you're from, you too should have a opportunity.

So complicated John, so very complicated...

Good stuff John!
