Senate Republicans endorse Crist

Cornyn, the head of the NRSC, endorsed Crist's Senate bid.

Cornyn, the head of the NRSC, endorsed Crist's Senate bid.

TALLAHASSEE, Florida (CNN) – The National Republican Senatorial Committee endorsed Florida Gov. Charlie Crist for Senate Tuesday, hoping that a statement of public support will help the governor avoid a potentially bloody primary fight and instead allow him to focus on the 2010 general election.

Crist declared his candidacy for the Senate this morning in a statement released by his campaign. He will face former state House Speaker Marco Rubio in the Republican primary Rubio declared . A Quinnipiac Poll released last month showed that Crist had a commanding lead over Rubio, 54 percent to 8 percent.

Texas Sen. John Cornyn, the NRSC chairman, said he was endorsing the governor for the seat being vacated by retiring GOP Sen. Mel Martinez, because “Charlie Crist is the best candidate in 2010 to ensure that we maintain the checks and balances that Floridians deserve in the United States Senate.”

Rubio announced his candidacy for the Senate last week.

Full Cornyn statement:

“I am pleased today to endorse Governor Charlie Crist for the United States Senate. With his record of reform in Florida, I know that Governor Crist will bring a fresh perspective to Washington in our efforts to fight for lower taxes, less government, and new job creation for all Americans. Charlie Crist is a tireless advocate on behalf of all Floridians and one of only three Governors who earned an ‘A’ from the CATO institute for his efforts to restrain spending and cut taxes last year.

“While I believe Marco Rubio has a very bright future within the Republican Party, Charlie Crist is the best candidate in 2010 to ensure that we maintain the checks and balances that Floridians deserve in the United States Senate. Governor Crist is a dedicated public servant and a dynamic leader, and the National Republican Senatorial Committee will provide our full support to ensure that he is elected the next United States Senator from Florida.”

The National Republican Senatorial Committee is just blowing sunshine up Charlie's butt so he won't leave the party.

As a liberal Democrat, I have to say that having Crist in the US Senate, albeit not my first choice, would not be especially frightening. However, I don't think that a statement from someone as polarizing and partisan as Cornyn does Crist any good in reaching out to moderate voters in Floruida who are absolutely essential for a win there.

Republicans endorsing Charlie Crist should be careful. Limbaugh is taking notes. Charlie Crist actually can think for himself and actually makes a real effort to be bipartisan. He's just the kind of Republican that Limbaugh and Cheney want out of the party. Be careful of guilt by association.

    Ain't this some BS MESS.

These SAME Republican BIGOTS crucified Arlene Spector for voting in favor of President Obama's Stimulus Plan and HERE these Republican HYPOCRITES are praising Gov. Crist who voted in FAVOR of the Stimulus money for Senate!! What kind of "fragel-nagel BULL" is this?

This is why Republicans are so irrelevant, they contradict themselves EVERY step of the way. They can't decide WHO they are or WHAT they stand for at any given time. A Republican is like a black jack dealer, you NEVER know what hand they are going to deal, they don't even know themselves. Unbelievable.

Doesn't the volatile GOP base consider Crist a RINO? I don't think they'd approve of Cornyn's endorsement.

After what Gov. Crist did with the stimulus money in Stuart, Fl., he should be running for something else. Like to the Brain Institute, where it shows a person uses common sense, investigates the situation, and then, maybe, releases the money. But being a Republican, what the heck, I'll spend some money!!!!!!!!!!! Like I said in my email to the Gov. earlier, when I vote, lets hope there's a janitor, cook, teacher, or even a dog catcher running also. Because I and many others will vote for the person who knows about life. Not MONEY.

Oh boy a new GOP hero to blather over. Just the fact that the GOP is firmly behind him , makes me suspect that he is guilty of some wrong doing, crazy, a pederast, etc. It seems that whenever they fall in line behind someone there's always some wrongdoing in the past. See: McCain, Palin, Hastert, Delay, Lott, Frist, Santorum,Gingrich, Taft, Noe, etc. etc.

Crist always checks to see which way the polical winds are blowing. He is a typical politican that tells people what they want to hear. I live in Florida and will not vote for him – he is an O supporter.

Endorsing a pro-stimulus moderate, eh? Better watch out. That's political suicide for Republicans these days.

Let's see who Rush endorses. Crist is moderate and therefore may face opposition from the right.

I have on question , Why is it that republicans think that conservatism is the only way to prosper ,their stuck on this same old mantra lowerr taxes and, less government , if I'm not mistaken ,these ,principles haven't been working well , this is partly what got us in this mess , it seems as if it's a smoke and mirrors game , because they say one thing but when they were in power they did the complete opposite , so I tell Americans don't be fooled by that same ole tired line of small government because the last time we bought that line there was a covert plan of not disclosing where our monies are being spent and who was benefiting from their smaller government.
