CIA denies Cheney request on interrogations

Dick Cheney asked for classified CIA documents to be released.
Dick Cheney asked for classified CIA documents to be released.

WASHINGTON (CNN) – The CIA rejected former Vice President Dick Cheney's request to declassify records of abusive interrogations of suspected terrorists, a spokesman for the spy agency said Thursday.

In a written statement, CIA spokesman Paul Gimigliano said the two documents Cheney requested are the subject of a pending lawsuit and cannot be declassified.

Cheney has said he wants the documents released so there can be a more "honest debate" on the Bush administration's approval of "alternative" interrogation techniques against suspected terrorists. He argued that those techniques provided valuable intelligence that saved American lives, but critics say they amounted to the illegal torture of prisoners in U.S. custody.

Torture is illegal. Bush, Cheney, Rice, Rumsfeld, and the cammanders on the ground who gave the order should be prosecuted for war crimes. They have immeasurably tarnished America's reputation world wide, which makes every single American LESS safe. The extreme right can try to spin this any way they want to, but the vast majority of anti-American sentiment in the world that leads to terror attacks in the first place are a direct result of this kind of irresponsible abuse of power. The damage they caused will take generations to repair.

At least Bush is smart enough to keep his head down, when Cheney opens his mouth, he buries himself deeper, after the damage these 2 did, I say let him.

Dick, your request on interrogations has been denied. The Bush Administration used torture on prisoners in U.S. custody and that was wrong. Stop trying to make yourself look good. Those torture techniques did not save any American lives. Let justice prevail and let truth stand her ground for even a former VP is not above the law.

Keep it up Mr. Cheney, the Democrats are running scared. They are in this mess up to their eyeballs and they know it. It was just fine when it was their opinion only the Republicans were going to get their heads chopped off, now they want to change the game plan because it appears the Democrats are the ones that will be getting their heads chopped off. Don't let up, if they can dish out, they should be able to take it. So, good luck Mr. Cheney.

I think the funniest comments I've read today are the people here defending Cheney. Did Rush and Dick's famly ask you all to do that too? Must be the 21% that still call themselves Republicans that are doing it.

Dick Cheney could have declassified these memos before he left if he wanted an honest debate.

Tsk tsk tsk...from "give me liberty or give me death" to torture (and you can say it's not but if the Spanish Inquisition considered it torture I'm gonna). From heroes that would rather hang than be dishonourable to the ends justifies the means. Keep in mind that when US soldiers are captured that the enemies ends may also justify the means and you won't have a moral or ethical leg to stand on....

as a former Republican who voted for Bush and Cheney, I PLEAD with those still in the party to come together and ask for Cheney's silence. HE IS HURTING, NOT HELPING. We are ONE country and whatever his motives might be–some self gain or promotion–all he is doing is spreading hate. And the worst part is he is doing so by blatantly lying. I know other conservatives who in their heart of hearts know what he and W. did were gravely wrong...we just cant find the strength to admit it.

Dick looks and acts like Mr. Mole in the fairytale Thumbelina. He so creepy. He needs to shut up and go away. Everyone knows he's guilty of war crimes, and if he doesn't quit rambling on about waterboarding he and others just may get prosecuted.
