CIA denies Cheney request on interrogations

Dick Cheney asked for classified CIA documents to be released.
Dick Cheney asked for classified CIA documents to be released.

WASHINGTON (CNN) – The CIA rejected former Vice President Dick Cheney's request to declassify records of abusive interrogations of suspected terrorists, a spokesman for the spy agency said Thursday.

In a written statement, CIA spokesman Paul Gimigliano said the two documents Cheney requested are the subject of a pending lawsuit and cannot be declassified.

Cheney has said he wants the documents released so there can be a more "honest debate" on the Bush administration's approval of "alternative" interrogation techniques against suspected terrorists. He argued that those techniques provided valuable intelligence that saved American lives, but critics say they amounted to the illegal torture of prisoners in U.S. custody.

How convenient that Leon Panetta won't allow them to be released.

AN ARTICLE THIS SHORT AND YOU STILL CANNOT COMPREHEND WHAT YU READ. CIA spokesman Paul Gimigliano said the two documents Cheney requested are the subject of a pending lawsuit and cannot be declassified.

Dick Cheney should be in jail for sanctioning torture.
Our inaction is consent to war crimes.
Our silence is consent to war crimes.
Eric Holder should be bringing charges against the Bush Administration for sanctioning torture!
    The evidence against them OVERWHELMING!
I don't care if any Democrats were complicit, THEY CAN GO TO JAIL TOO, including Reid and Pelosi.
This is not a partisan issue to liberals, the issue is justice.
    Justice must be done

Cheney made a Freedom of Information request as a US citizen. Any citizen has the same right. Of course, many of you would deny civil rights to Cheney and others you don't like.

Wow political showmanship at its finest requesting Docs to be released that you know there is no way will possibly be released. Hmmmm why didn't you and Georgie release them when you were in office??? The election was going on perhaps it would have been prudent if you were honestly concerned about the country that you show us, when it was under your direct control, that this policy would be "dangerous."

Cheney sure does like sharing top secret information with the public don't he? ALl he is trying to do is blur the public debate with scary stories, ignoring the basic facts that we have invaded and destroyed people for doing less, complaining about cruelty and torture, and now want to do the same thing and be applauded for it? WHat is that word for that? oh yeah! HYPOCRISY!

All Cheney wants is for us to debate torture publically. If we do that he wins.

Let me spell it out here...

    24 is not real
    Jack Bauer is not real
    Torture is an INTERNATIONAL CRIME
There is no such thing as a ticking timebomb scenario in which torture would work. Not even worth hypothesizing because... TORTURE IS ILLEGAL.

Period. This is not open for debate.

I aplaud Cheney's desire to be more open about the Bush administration. Why stop with just these documents? Why dont we release ALL the classified documents so we can have an honest debate about how many lies were told and how many laws were broken by the Bush administration.

If it was up to me, I'd give him that for the Valerie Plame & energy meeting information that he didn't want released.

WES: So yesterday in a congressional hearing we heard a man named "Ali" tell us waterboarding doesn't work without any facts to make his case, only opinion.

COULD YOU BE ANY MORE RACIST???? The man is the MOST qualified person to testify you nimrod. He was the head interogator of Abu $# as well as the US cole bombers and the African embassy bombers.

It seems to me the Cheney has a couple of goals here.. to get the classified docs so he can use bits and pieces of them in an upcoming book, and to muddy the waters and gin up the far left and right on the torture debate. He's succeeding on his second goal.
Since he has nothing else better to do he'll probably keep blabbing as long as someone will put a mic in front of his face.

It is amazing that people like “right wing conservative" Tom still support the worst, most corrupt administration that this county has ever suffered through. Tom wake up. The previous administration was a bunch of devious liars working for the benefit of big corporations. They let America down. Look at the mess they left us.

I agreed with him. And i think every MEMO and video should be out, so there is MORE truth come out... Even, under Clinton's memo about secret with a lady in his office. :-)

Guess what you Dick? Torture of Jews by Nazis led to the capture of more Jews. We Americans should not act like Nazis or we will become Nazis.

Cheney needs a good lawyer. Whether the torture was effective is IRRELEVANT! Torture is a violation of US and International law. It is a war crime. An analogy would be robbing a bank and then donating the money to charity. Illegal means to achieve a good outcome. Court precedent rejects this absurd reasoning. Court precedent defines waterboarding as torture. Court precedent holds that no man including the President or Vice President is above the law. It is time to prosecute this unrepentant moral relativist whom has brought shame and dishonor to our country.

DICK, you are not being Punk'd. This is REAL. Your crimes are REAL. The lives that have been lost are REAL. Stop trying to justify yourself. So far I've heard Former FBI Director Muller say that torture doesn't work, then I've heard it from numerous CIA officials that it doesn't work. Since you brought up "rendition" about a week ago, you should make it a Blockbuster night and actually rent the movie. You may learn something. Torture doesn't work.

As to my previous point of undermining the President's authority, that's a whole other bag of worms. As much as I dissaproved of Bush, I don't think he was fully informed about your actions. Did you disclose everything to the President? I'm not sure what involvement Speaker Pelosi had in this, but if she claims that she wasn't fully informed that these TORTURE techniques were actually being used, I may see some truth to her statement that the CIA didn't fully brief her. This was YOUR program DICK. If the CIA was answering to you, my intuition tells me that your "Dark Side" told them not to disclose all the facts to Speaker Pelosi, or to the President for the matter.

Its amazing at how the vast majority of posters have absolutely no grasp of the real historical facts and instead write the most revised versions of facts and history. If you're going to post, please check your facts, get some education in history, and then offer your opinion rather than your ill-founded, uneducated rants. I also notice that the uneducated, ill-formed posts are mostly from the Cheney/torture supporters and other right-wing nuts.

Cheney was requesting two documents, two. One of which is titled "effectiveness memo". Despite this memo being in the hands of the Department of Justice, Eric Holder lied and said they did not have this memo (this memo is referred ti by several of the released memos). The current excuse of a lawsuit is pathetic and just the result of Obama hiding the truth from the american people.
