A Kennedy weighs in on Virginia governors race

Kennedy is backing Moran.
Kennedy is backing Moran.

WASHINGTON (CNN) - A member of the Kennedy clan is making an endorsement in the Virginia governor's race.

Rhode Island Rep. Patrick Kennedy, the son of Sen. Ted Kennedy, announced on Friday that he's backing Democrat Brian Moran.

"Last November, families in Virginia and across the nation helped usher in a new generation of leadership," Kennedy said in a statement. "However, the need for this new generation of leaders is not confined to Washington and the White House."

It's another example - after Ted and Caroline Kennedy's endorsement of Barack Obama in 2008 - of the Kennedy family keeping its political distance from Bill and Hillary Clinton. Moran's rival for the Democratic nomination, after all, is longtime Clinton ally Terry McAuliffe. The former president has been campaigning for McAuliffe throughout the commonwealth this week.

With low turnout expected in the June 9 primary, each campaign hopes that these brand name endorsements will help them win the support of the Democratic loyalists likely to go to the polls on election day.

Moran and McAuliffe are competing against Democrat Creigh Deeds for their party's nomination. The winner of that primary will face Republican Bob McDonnell in the general election.

The endorsement is not the only Kennedy boost Moran is getting: Ethel Kennedy, the widow of former Senator Robert F. Kennedy, is hosting a fundraiser for Moran on May 27 at her home, Hickory Hill in McLean.

They don't got love for each other?? Or is it more personal than we presume?? Or let alone, than we imagine?? That's odd, no? You would think they would have respect for each other, considering they come from very powerful families, heck, you could even make the argument that there's been no families more powerful than the Kennedy's or the Clinton's, no doubt the most powerful over the last 40+ years.

They both got some real political prowess, some might even say the Bushes should be up there but it depends who you talk to. I don't know, I just thought they would have more love for each other I guess...

Sucks to be Bill! The Kennedy's are still holding a grudge from the '92 campaign when Bill tried to liken himself to JKF.

No thank you Mr. Kennedy the last two liberal democrats have just about destroyed this state with their tax increases and spending. I hope people wake up and vote conservative this time no matter which party the conservative is running under if there is one to run.

Im sorry, but Joe smoe Kennedy is NOT a big name! Never heard of him, and apparently he is not real important in the Kennedy clan, that is why hes been given a post like representative for RI. Apparently the Kennedys were tucking this guy away. The fact that he has a nothing position in a nothing state is a clear slap in the face from the REAL Kennedys. OH and Bill Clinton is about a million times more of a name than this obscure Kennedy from the 3rd district in RI where he represents 3000 people...HA..

Seriously? he's saying he's backing Moran because of the change he would represent? Doesn't anyone find the whole Kennedy/change mantra a little bit of an oxymoron? I mean it's cool if they don't like the Clinton's but come on, you want change from a family that has dominated Washington politics for over 40 years. Ted Kennedy has never held a candle to his brothers, so why does everyone act like the Kennedy's of today are what the were in 1960?

I have very little regard for the Kennedys, but I must say they went up a notch or two by keeping their distance from the Clintons. While the Kennedys are bad, the Clintons are much, much worse.

Obama is paying lawyers to hide his birth certificate. We know that fact because his lawyers answers to suits all over the country are public record. There’s nothing crazier than a President hiding his birth certificate. People need to know that fact."

I would like to think that Virginia, as well as the rest of the country, was ready to cast aside the type of politics played by the likes of McAuliffe, but I fear that his money and people still being swayed by the likes of the Clintons will carry the day. There is a lot of work to be done to try to resist these types of politicians. Hopefully Virginia Democrats will rise to the occasion. No matter what his name is, this Kennedy appears to have hit this nail on the head to me.

Oh thank God. I was afraid the royal family might not weigh in on this one. He needs to snort some coke, have a few drinks , and drive home to Rhode Island. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I know, the AMA says addiction is a disease. Big deal. To answer a previous question, no, I wouldn't bash someone with cancer. But then again, I've never known anyone to decide they wanted to give cancer a try. Nor have I ever known anyone to have the will power to go cold turkey and "quit" cancer. Addiction is a weakness.

The problem that people have with the Kennedys is that they are shanty Irish. Nothing can erase this. I think people are a little bit too hard on them

Virginia is not for sale. Moran is the best Virginian for the job.
He has ethics and has run his own business, unlike what Terry claims he's done.
Running for GOV is a power play on the part of Terry M. Virginians need leadership and a focused public servant. Terry M. is a carpet bagger who loves power and the spot light. What an ego.

Who cares? Terry McAuliffe? The clown who single-handedly ran the Democratic Party into the ground for four years and went 0-3 in the Big Time? It's nearly IMPOSSIBLE to NOT gain seats at the two-year mark yet Terry McAwful managed to do that against a selected incumbent.

Just think how he could mismanage things in Richmond!!
