Gingrich said Pelosi is a 'trivial politician, viciously using partisanship for the narrowest of purposes.'

(CNN) - House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is engaging in a "despicable, dishonest and vicious political effort" to withhold what she knew about the CIA's aggressive interrogation techniques, Newt Gingrich said Friday, in what amounts to the harshest criticism yet leveled at the California Democrat.

In an interview with ABC Radio, the former House Speaker said Pelosi flat-out "lied to the House" when she earlier claimed the CIA had never briefed her about the Bush administration's use of aggressive interrogation techniques including waterboarding.

"I think that the House has an absolute obligation to open an inquiry, and I hope there will be a resolution to investigate her. And I think this is a big deal. I don't think the Speaker of the House can lie to the country on national security matters," Gingrich said.

Pelosi has been under fire from critics who say that she was fully briefed on the techniques in 2002 and 2003.  On Thursday, the California Democrat accused CIA officials of misleading her, reiterating an earlier claim that she was briefed on such techniques only once - in September 2002 - and that she was told at the time that the techniques were not being used.

Pelosi also said the briefing she received from the CIA was incomplete and inaccurate, and she called on the CIA to release a full transcript of the briefing. She also accused Republicans of jumping on reports of the briefings to cause a distraction.

"She is a trivial politician, viciously using partisanship for the narrowest of purposes, and she dishonors the Congress by her behavior," Gingrich also said in the blistering interview.

Earlier: Source: Aide told Pelosi waterboarding had been used

"Speaker Pelosi's the big loser, because she either comes across as incompetent, or dishonest. Those are the only two defenses," he continued. "The fact is, she either didn't do her job, or she did do her job and she's now afraid to tell the truth."

Vicious partisanship? I'd say you know a thing or two about that, Newt. Your senseless attack on Nancy Pelosi, for instance.

Dave   May 15th, 2009 12:36 pm ET

Pelosi should be waterboarded. She might tell the truth then.

JohnS   May 15th, 2009 12:35 pm ET

The United States of America is better without people like Gingrich.

What does it matter?

Torture was a Republican Policy and the Republicans should take responsibility of their own policies.

Bush even vetoed the ban of waterboarding.

Now we know TORTURE was used by Cheney and Co. to justify the Iraq war that was already engaged.

yeahrighttt   May 15th, 2009 12:35 pm ET

Okay if someone with credibility (obviously not the Repuklean) will criticized Pelosi I will be worried but it's always the repuklean whose spewing hatred as if what they says STILL matters. They were given power to reigned the country and look what happen to America. Here's the thing; fool us once shame on you fool us twice shame on us. So now whenever there's any criticism against the democrat . I usually see whose talking if I see GOP, Republican, conservative whose doing it. I just shrug and say WHATEVER or BlahBlahBlahBlah or stick and stone will break their bones but words (coming from the REAL LOSERS REPUBLICAN) will never hurt them it will actually empower them. The more they spew the more power the democrat have.

Anonymous   May 15th, 2009 12:27 pm ET

Nancy Pelosi should resign from her position, obviously she lied and continues to lie and is putting our CIA in a compromising position. Does she think we all just fell off the turnip truck? She is an abomination to the upheld, respectable posiition she holds and needs to step down immediately.

Pathetic is that this country was run into the dumpster by the George Bush admin and you still don't recognize it! How was the decision to go to war, running up the debt or his arrogance not his fault–he was supposed to be the LEADER.

Newt has never lied in his life.He always tells the truth,Rush Limbaugh told me so.

CJ   May 15th, 2009 12:26 pm ET

I find it amazing that Newt can use that terminology describing Pelosi. Does he think our memories are that short? Facts are facts, Cheney and Bush are responsible for breaking the law and issuing orders to have military personnel break the law. I do not believe Pelosi was waterboarding either of the two when they made their decisions.

Trent   May 15th, 2009 12:26 pm ET

If the Republican Party is ever expected to survive they have to shut this idiot up!

LLL   May 15th, 2009 12:26 pm ET

I don't understand partisanship on this issue at all. I think anyone who feels that one side did all the "dirty work" and the other side is innocent has blinders on. There are plenty of folks on both sides of the aisle to blame. And if we, as a country, want to ever hold our heads up proudly again we need to hold all of them accountable. I have no doubt that Nancy Pelosi was told what was going on. However, I wouldn't doubt it either if she didn't grasp it. Either way she should be held accountable because she is either lying or incredibly stupid.

Reggie from LA   May 15th, 2009 12:26 pm ET

Why just Pelosi? Why not Cheney? Why not all of them? And I'm not just questioning Gingrich, you other self-righteous ones.

Cynthia - Arkansas   May 15th, 2009 12:26 pm ET

Let's get it all out in the open and let the chips fall where they may.

The reputation of this country is on the line.

Susan, Macedon New York   May 15th, 2009 12:25 pm ET

Newt Gingrich, the most partisan of Republicans, is calling Nancy Pilosi a partisan? That's rich.

I do agree, though, that Nancy needs to go. She's very poloarizing and frankly, I don't think she's very smart. It's hard to say bad things about one of the leaders of my own party, but she actually sabotaged a crucial vote with a venomous attack on republicans right before it happened. She puts herself first – not the country or even her party.
Go away, Nancy

Shame on our Nancy!   May 15th, 2009 12:25 pm ET

It is time that Nancy step down and apoligize to the American people, and specifically CIA officials that she has continued to embarrass and lie to. She has told numerous staff, family and friends, all along this debate, for several years now, that she not only knew of the water boarding going on, but "undestood the need to get to the truth and save American lives". Now that it has become politically incorrect to approve of such harsh methods, she is pretending to have not known anything about it.

Shame on you NANCY!

Terry   May 15th, 2009 12:25 pm ET

It is a typical Conservative tactic to demonize their opponents and move the discussion from issues – about which Conservatives have nothing to say – to a discussion of how vile and repugnant "Democrat Socialist Liberals" are. They want to discuss personalities rather than the freedom, security, prosperity, and happiness of Americans, which are the real issues of politics.

Newt Gingrich's own tenure as Speaker was scandalous and filled with a series of outrages. He is the last person who can give us advice on how a Speaker of the House should conduct himself or herself.

It is my earnest hope that the two of them will retire on their generous government pensions with their great health insurance. They are both political hacks of the worst kind. Neither of them is worth anywhere close to the salaries we have paid them and the retirement benefits we will continue to pay them until they die.

Most of us, of course, will be working for Walmart well into our golden years.

Sniffit   May 15th, 2009 12:25 pm ET

@ DrMan, who said "she and her ilk are desperately trying to focus attention anywhere but on her perceived lies. "

Right, because the spotlight certainly doesn't belong on people who committed crimes against humanity in our names. Oh no, we should divert attention to the Botox Monster because her potentially knowing about it and yet having no control over it whatsoever is much worse than actually having done it.

You know what, for once I agree with Newt. It is deplorable the way Pelosi has handled this situation. This whole thing is such a farce and she should either come clean, or step down. Personally, I'd just like to see her resign and quietly go away, then maybe we'll have some bipartisanship.

SLM   May 15th, 2009 12:23 pm ET

Why does California keep on electing a liar like Pelosi? California isn't it? Wonder why we are in such huge debt and still can't stop spending. This is what happens when the liberals run the show for so many years.

Bill Cheek   May 15th, 2009 12:23 pm ET

I still don't quite get why Republicans still engage in this kind of public battering of political rivals. Don't they understand that the 2008 elections were a rebuke of the typical Republican tactics. The nation is tired of this. It's petty and creates issues where there were none to act as a distraction from the real issues. Lee Atwater would be proud, but it's a distraction we can no longer afford. Public pictures of torture did more harm to our nation and more to recruit terrorists than anything else we've done in history. The Republican Bush administration condoned it, encouraged it and that's the real issue. What Pelosi knew and when she knew it is a smoke screen. I just wish the Republicans would go away and come back when they either admit they were wrong about anything or have something constructive to offer to move us forward. Gingrich was worse than Pelosi ever thought about being when he was Speaker. Bunch of sour grapes. Continues to resign the Republican party to continued pubic disgust of their tactics and destines them for obscurity if they continue.

carlo   May 15th, 2009 12:23 pm ET

This guy's still talking? Isn't this the same guy who tried to crucify Clinton and left his wife in the hospital for wife No.2 (who has since been dumped for wife No.3). What a hypocrite. I don't give a tinker's behind if Pelosi knew. She had no authority to order anything. I want to know who ordered it. This is a red herring, and the GOP are so desparate to grab on to something they are falling over themselves.

mark duncan   May 15th, 2009 12:23 pm ET

these comments from a disgraced former SofTheH, who cares what he has to say. Newt was booted...why are all these failed politicians like newt and the Cheney dude crying, is it because their failures have brought this country to its knees, or are they so jealous they wil say and do anything to keep We the People from recovery? Think America, who brought you this economic crisis, health care crisis, energy crisis, inherently immoral OIL war on Iraq? and by the way , Where in the World is Osama Bin Laden?

So the act of committing a crime is not a crime but whether a person who know/not know about somebody else committing a crime is a crime?

The Bush administration tortured prisoners, that was not a crime?

Pelosi lied about knowing or not knowing that the Bush administration committed a crime is a crime? How screwed up could this be?

what about the people who DID IT and ORDER IT.

Marge   May 15th, 2009 12:22 pm ET

I can not understand this. Pelosi and the other democrats on the committee say they were not told they were going to waterboard prisoners. But those who think they are authorities on everything such as Newt say they were briefed. Now for what it is worth I think no matter how people want to dump on Pelosi because she is a woman and a democrat, I'd rather believe her than ????THE CIA???NEWT GINGRICH???AND KARL ROVE???? What a joke. The republicans are trying to take the heat off bush and cheney and it seems the MSM is going along with it, putting the blame on a member of a committee. How in the devil would they expect Nancy Pelosi a lone democrat in this crooked and corrupt republican administration to stop bush and cheney from letting the CIA run wild....don't you just love the ignorance of the press and the public.

Jim Stockand   May 15th, 2009 12:22 pm ET

I see the GOP is up to its same old tactics. Take the focus off of the bad things they did by attacking and distracting. This standard practice of the GOP is starting to get so familiar... Sad. The issue is whether we tortured. Not whether a senator knew about it. Come on Newt, whose the politician that uses his political power only for his advantage.... I would say Republicans have been notorious for doing this lately. Similar to Newt before he had to leave for being such a pig to his dying wife amongst other things, Bush, Cheney, Rove and their cronies surely did.

Daley   May 15th, 2009 12:22 pm ET

P from CA   May 15th, 2009 12:22 pm ET

If Pelosi knew so did the Republican's. The question is not about Congress the question is about Cheney. Did Cheney/Rumsfield torture to substanciate the war in Iraq. If so then those are crimes they must be tried for...end of story. The Republican's should not throw stones at glass houses....

MidwestGuy   May 15th, 2009 12:19 pm ET

It's funny to see how liberals deflect accusations when they are against one of their own. Members of BOTH parties should be held accountable for their actions.

This article is about Pelosi and her actions regarding the use of waterboarding. It's very evident that Pelosi had the knowledge, the responsibility and the authority to act if she felt it was necessary. Her motives are purely political, but it shows her incompetence if not stupidity.

So take off those rose colored glasses and see the truth. Both parties are corrupt, do something about it.

Brian   May 15th, 2009 12:19 pm ET

Where is Dem outrage? You were told from the beginning that Pelosi and the Dems knew all about it and just became outraged when they knew they could manipulate you suckers for votes.

Obama is now going to keep the tribunials and a lot of you who were played owe your country a great big apology.

Joyce   May 15th, 2009 12:19 pm ET

Whether Pelosi knew or not the MSM is trying to divert the attention from the main characters of the show, Buch and loud mouth Cheney. I get it **wink** but the ex CIA officer has already testified anonamously in front of congress and stated that he recieved vital information from the suspected "terrorist" before the other tortures began!

I say this is a bunch of hog-wash!
Knock it off MSM and let us prosecute Cheney, he's a lying sac, and a war criminal. The GOP has no more credibility...they are history unless they get their acts together (which i seriously doubt).

ryan   May 15th, 2009 12:19 pm ET

The stuttering should tell anyone that she was lying. What amazes me is that people in this country can't see through either side (Rep or Dem). Newsflash, 99% of all politicians are liars. Ever hear the saying "It takes 2 to fight". Bipartisanship is dead and guess who is stuck in the middle "The American people". The 2 parties have polarized this country wo much they are bringing this country to its knees and when something goes wrong, the people posting in these forums just point the finger at the other party. Wake up people, things are not going to get any better, and guess what, your party is just as much to blame. What happened to "accountability". I think if you look it up in the new Webster dictionary, it probably isn't in there any more.

eeriemoon   May 15th, 2009 12:19 pm ET

Loraine   May 15th, 2009 12:19 pm ET

Does it matter who knew what when...the holding of hostages was 7.5 years long...any politician could have asked for and gotten answers along the way.. NONE did. They are all equally to blame.

I totally understand President Obama's stand for both trying to be as up front as possible with the information he had (regarding torture) before becoming president and the total Republican mess he has had to deal with since. Playing show and tell with this information at this stage would be a bad call.

No matter how you slice it...REPUBLICANS LET REPUBLICANS RUN AMERICA for 8 years AND THEY RAN IT RIGHT INTO THE GROUnD. Why should Dem's play nice now...they have to clean up the mess that was left over.

Denise   May 15th, 2009 12:18 pm ET

Nancy was sworn to silence and told it was a national secuirty issue, as it was a time of war. I blame her not at all. BUT the folks who authorized it...Bush and Cheney, Rumsfeld and Rice...they should fry! Aamazin how the Repigs jump on the first smell of a Democrat possibly at fault. They are SO GOOD at the blame game and diverting the attention away from their NO stance. I use to be a Repug, they have some good ideals BUT WHERE THE HELL ARE THEY NOW???

This is VERY dangerous for the Republican party. Obama has refuted the pleas to prosecute Bush-era administration. If Newt pushes for the investigation of what Pelosi just KNEW then the gloves may come off and we'll be looking into what Bush/Cheney actually DID.

Bush wouldn't get his library then unless Cheney/Haliburton funded it. lol

Karen in Florida   May 15th, 2009 12:18 pm ET

I don't care for Pelosi at all but what Jeff says is true. This whole "torture"

Newt is a has been trying to be relevant again and it won't work. ALL the old guard needs to go away. Bush, Cheney, Newt, Limbaugh, Hannity and the rest of the GOP idiots need to be water boarded and then spent their remaining days in exile. If Pelosi is guilty she needs to go with them.

Shocking! Pelosi is a politician who lies with a straight face. So, what is new? Obviously we need to give Washington more power, and more of our money so the liars can save us. Ya, we no longer need logic or the ability to think for ourselves, we will just do what the DC crowd tells us is good for us.

Stand by for change, as the greatest country that has ever existed is bankrupted by a bunch of power hungry liberals.

C'mon...do you know what radical Islamic terrorists do to their enemies? When US politicians denounce our own military for what they consider "barbaric" interrogation practices those same terrorists laugh at us, secure in the belief that Americans don't have the stomach for war. Such public displays of finger-pointing are in themselves a threat to our national security by giving the enemy confidence. By the way, our own special forces personnel have to experience water-boarding as part of their training...Unfortunately, there is no training to prepare them for being beheaded on a video!

Chris   May 15th, 2009 12:17 pm ET

A lot of people are missing the point here. The point is that Nancy Pelosi lied about what she knew. It doesn't matter whether it's Newt Gingrich, George W. Bush, or Mother Teresa saying she lied. The fact remains.

All you Bush & Newt bashers are making a huge mistake just like the Republicans have made.

You can bash all you want but what Newt says is true even if you hate him. Liberal or conservative, to think that the ranking member is lying or is not competent really should concern all Americans.

If she is telling the truth then, as a conservative, I think that the CIA and Bush administration, if proven, should be punished. If not, she should go.

Fair Is Unfair   May 15th, 2009 12:16 pm ET

"Hahahahahahahahaha… liberals throwing their own under the bus to be vindictive!!!! I love this!!!!!"

Really? Someone speaks from a center viewpoint and you pye out your laughing like a 14 year old texting his BFF? Wow.

This kind of crap is exactly why most people are afraid to be labled conservative anymore. Congrats on your superiority complex.

awaitingliberalizationbyCNN   May 15th, 2009 12:16 pm ET

Fair is fair, you might want to put out the roach and look at the calendar, we have Hussein Obama as our president now thanks to your dope smokin' buddies and Bush and Cheney are no longer in office. Go down to your local ACORN office they will be glad to tell you that.

Zion   May 15th, 2009 12:16 pm ET

Pelosi isn't going down, when will you people learn. Both DEMOCRATS AND REPUBLICANS do not want this sort of debate to surface because many people knew what was going on and did nothing.

But obviously it is okay for the President (Bush) and Vice President (Cheney) to lie to America – huh? Geez – the GOP is really grasping at straws to keep the focus off of them! It's ridiculous!!

Are you truly THAT BRAIN DAMAGED? This isn't a game......it's not about sides.....TRUTH IS TRUTH.

Now.....slappy....bring back SANDY BERGER before he gets hold of MORE PRESIDENTIAL DOCUMENTS! (before Bush!)

Bill Terry   May 15th, 2009 12:16 pm ET

Gingrich and the rest of the Republican cabal are the big losers. Bob Graham suppoerts what Pelosi has been saying – why aren't you covering that? Graham who is a very careful guy has documented the ways in which the CIA lied to him. There is every reason to believe Pelosi and not the CIA on this one.

Laurie   May 15th, 2009 12:16 pm ET

Before we get all exorcised about this situation we should wait and see what the transcripts say. People are forgetting that Sen Bob Gramm backs up Pelosi's story that he was also not briefed back in September of 2002. This is just a distraction by the Republicans to deflect what the Bush Administration did which was torture people in an effort to get them to admit to information regarding a link between Iraq and Al Quada. Shame, shame....they all need to prosecuted. I'm sure Ms Pelosi wouldn't be calling for the release of the transcripts of the briefings if she knew she had been told about waterboarding. I suspect she wasn't told at the original meeting and I think the transcripts have already backed that up. They are vague at the least.

jcartistcat   May 15th, 2009 12:16 pm ET

who cares what Gingrich says..he should have been indicted long ago. He's just a wind bag. The Bush admin is in for real trouble now that they can't hide behind/above their own misuse/abuse of power and law.

Gary Williams, Signal Hill, CA   May 15th, 2009 12:16 pm ET

Pelosi should indeed be investigated if she is lying to the public, I totally agree with Mr. Gingrich.

I can't wait for the day when democrats don't respond to any criticism, with an unrelated rant about Bush lying, WMDs, and the like.

Unrelated? Are you insane? Who started the "enhanced interrogation techniques"?
Torture is how the intel for starting the war was obtained. That WAS BUSH, you moron.

Joying   May 15th, 2009 12:16 pm ET

We shouldn't even be talking about this nonsense. Just another ploy to divert attention from the real liars...It's not hard to believe that the CIA "misled" Nancy Pelosi...Wasn't it their "intelligence" that got us into a war that will NEVER end. Lying about weapons of mass destruction, Saddam Hussein's connex to Al Quaida – it sickens me the the RE"DUD"ICANS have stooped this low..

Matt   May 15th, 2009 12:16 pm ET

Pelosi certainly isn't doing herself any favors by holding embarassing press conferences like the one yesterday. She is either incompetent or a liar. Once the facts are revealed, I am confident that both will be shown to be true.

Robin   May 15th, 2009 12:15 pm ET

@ Ed who wrote, Who cares if Nancy Pelosi knew in 2002 or 2003?

Um, because that is when the waterboarding took place and we have not used that technique since then.

Please do research and don't allow yourself to be spoon fed.

chelle   May 15th, 2009 12:15 pm ET

One of the most disgraced, despiccable, two-faced, lying, hypocritcal, chauvanistic travesties of a politician has the temerity to criticize another politiician. She is a liar and the biggest loser for the democratic party!!! Investigate her like innocent people have been investigated for disagreeing with her!!!! Take that govt airplane from her – she is flying all over the map and spending big bucks – spending our money!!!!!
ENOUGH OF PELOSI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ken in NC   May 15th, 2009 12:15 pm ET

WOW. I think Nancy Pelosi knew more than she is letting on about the Torture and it should be brought to light. That having been said, I am a Democrat that thinks "What's Good For The Goose Is Good For The Gander". I also think Republicans also knew and if it can be found that any or all of these people violated the law then they should be persecuted.

If in the process it is determined that National Security will be compromised then the investigation and or any resulting trial should be continued behind closed doors with the transcripts being made public in 50 years when they would no longer be relevant. In this manner Justice would be served and National Security would be maintained.

I laugh at Limbaugh daily   May 15th, 2009 12:15 pm ET

Jeff   May 15th, 2009 12:14 pm ET

I couldn't agree more. Nancy Pelosi is a liar. She's been a highly polarizing figure ever since she took office. The Democratic party and the country as a whole would be well served if she were stripped of her duties as House Speaker.

Ollie   May 15th, 2009 12:14 pm ET

Is it just me or does all of this sound like a bunch of junior high students dis-ing on each other?
I am not kidding – That is all I hear in Newt's words, Cheney's words, Pelosi's words, and some of the postings right here.
Face it – every politico out there spins the truth. We have too few honorable leaders – on both sides of the aisle.

Nathan   May 15th, 2009 12:14 pm ET

Pelosi's claims are huge. You can't have the speaker of the house alleging that the CIA lied to congress and not have a full blown investigation.

Jack   May 15th, 2009 12:14 pm ET

"I think that the House has an absolute obligation to open an inquiry, and I hope there will be a resolution to investigate her. And I think this is a big deal. I don't think the Speaker of the House can lie to the country on national security matters," Newt Gingrich

So true, but coming from Newt, it sounds like a joke. The Republicans can't have it both ways. They don't want to investigate the Bush administration, but they want to investigate any Democrat that may have been briefed. They don't want to release evidence that may be used against Dick Vader and company, but they want to release all the so called briefing documents. Newt, go crawl back under your rock.

The waiter at Chilli's took forever...Bush's fault.....I took my car to get washed and they did a crappy job....Bush's fault....Nancy Pelosi lied...well obviously she lied because she was under a supernatural spell that Bush put on her....the Mavericks lost to the Denver Nuggetts...no question Bush's fault....I cant get a job even though I haven't been really active in my job search...sorry ol' Bush's fault

Starting to get how pathetic ya'll sound....

This is can be summed up in ONE word...DIVERSION!...this is typical of the republican party...to create a diversion to have the american people take their eyes off the greater picture here! They're trying to smear the dems so we can take our concentration elsewhere and off of the REAL criminals Bush & Cheney and the rest of the republican party! I don't care when or how Pelosi was briefed, Cheney ORDERED the waterboarding WHICH IS ILLEGAL PEOPLE! he needs to go to jail! I don't care for Pelosi much (and i'm a democrat) but what could she have done? she was dealing with the most ignorant president ever! he was gonna do anything and everything he wanted regardless of what Pelosi had to say, better yet...he did what he wanted despite what the AMERICAN PEOPLE had to say!

Oh... and she also things the US has 500,000,000 people employed... LOL

sideon   May 15th, 2009 12:14 pm ET

Torture. Pelosi and Gingrich are distracting the real issue: the US authorized the use of TORTURE.

Bush and Cheney did not keep the US safe – the worst attack on US soil happened on their watch. Their Administration of Oil and Greed then used torture and false claims to take our great country into war with a nation that wasn't a threat.

The real criminals are every single member of the Bush administration. The accomplices to their crimes are Republicans like Gingrich that keep repeating their lies.

Tulsa   May 15th, 2009 12:14 pm ET

Keep spinning Republicans.
When someone calls you on TORTURE, you point the finger and say "She knew too!"

That does not get you off the hook for starting the whole mess.

If you can't take the consequences of breaking the law, don't break the law. If you get caught, fess up and take the punishment, no matter who you are.

By the way, if this was secret info and a matter of national security, could Pelosi actually say anything about it at the time?

Ron Skrzysowski   May 15th, 2009 12:13 pm ET

As much as I hate to agree with Newt, he's right on this one. She is an incompetent politician who wouldn't know or couldn't tell the truth if it was standing right in front of her. The Wicked Witch of the West needs to go to keep killing off the political party disease in our government.

I don't think the Speaker of the House can lie to the country on national security matters," Gingrich said

But the president of the country " George Bush " can.

GJ   May 15th, 2009 12:13 pm ET

Who is Newt Gingrich to criticize anyone for being partisan and vicious?

Bob the Observer   May 15th, 2009 12:13 pm ET

Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid were buffoons who were appointed minority leaders back when there was no Democratic leadership. With the changes that have come in the past three years, the responsibility has devolved on the Democrats to search their ranks and come up with some valid leaders. Surely the vast majority they have in both houses could give them an opportunity to pick someone better than the two clowns they now have speaking for the party.

It's time for some serious leadership. If the Dems do not take this seriously, their power on the hill will evaporate as certainly as the Republicans' has done.

Sure would be nice if there were a viable third party to take over this time though.

D. Tree   May 15th, 2009 12:13 pm ET

Did Pelosi have anything to do with creating the torture policy? NO! So why is this jerk attacking her so viciously?

Simple: The architects of torture are going on the offense, because they are scared about what will happen to THEM when the truth comes out!

JimG   May 15th, 2009 12:13 pm ET

Sorry, Newt – you're the loser, along with Cheney, Jindal, and the rest of your obnoxious GOP cohorts. She said, and I already said this, even if she knew there was nothing she could have done. All this "after-the-fact" stuff is ridiculous.

mike   May 15th, 2009 12:13 pm ET

The by line is typical CNN garbage. By putting big loser in quotations, it implies newt called her big loser, a personal attack, when if fact he meant she is a loser in the battle, as in won vs. lost. No wonder CNN has low ratings and no jouralistic credibility. Only trying to sell headlines or pushing political agendas instead of investigation and reporting facts.

Smear tactics are all the Repubs have left. and it looks like their last weapon is not going to work. Think about it wasn't George Tenet a part of the CIA? What about the way they did Valerie Plame?

Whether she knew or not knew the fact still remains George Bush was in charge and waterboarding did go on under his administration. Wake up America. Repubs doing what they have always done to take the attention away from the REAL issue here. Waterboarding is the issue, Newt!

I'm not a big fan of Pelosi, but honestly, Newt Gingrich calling anyone else a loser is laughable. This man is a failure morally, politically, and on every other level. His personal life is a nightmarish hell and his career is in the toilet, and he's obviously trying to keep himself out there because he wants to run for president in 2012... but he's already undermining any hope he had of that by being such a jerk in public.

He has no credibility, and his criticism is only making Pelsoi look more sympathetic... when she shouldn't.

citizen like you.   May 15th, 2009 12:10 pm ET

She is being criticized harshly by you for simply, possibly having knowledge of the mentioned torture methods, that the president and his pals created. If she is so bad a person and such a bad congress woman for just hearing about those methods, then I supposed you must have some REALLY harsh words stored up for the people RESPONSIBLE for those methods, The president, who took us to WAR on false pretenses and lies, and those other "officials" who orchestrated it. They hijacked America, flat out. Don't be such a step in time lackey. Turn on your lying party, have some principal, look your self in the eyes.

C Spurgeon   May 15th, 2009 12:09 pm ET

Wow Gingrich is a moral authority now. You know I think Pelosi should go but not because she is a liar. She should go because she is a fool and has allowed the Dems to get off message and in fact make herself the message. I do think the CIA would and is lying. That is part of their job and I casn see where the disdain for Congress would come from. Two term limits are the answer. Very few are pure. Just a matter ofm who is worse and I believe the republicans will stay in the worst for a while.

Kelby In Houston, TX   May 15th, 2009 12:09 pm ET

Republicans believe that the Democrats are going to circle the wagans and try to protect Nancy Pelosi.
We are not going to do that.
If she was complicit with torture, she is going down too. The Democrats will 'rip into Pelosi' with a vicious passion. We don't care!
There is no protection, no cover up and this will not cause the calls for justice to subside

Sacto Chris   May 15th, 2009 12:09 pm ET

Justin   May 15th, 2009 12:09 pm ET

To Drake. Its funny to hear a republican refer to democrats as "self-righteous" and "zealots". This from a member of a party that caters to actual religious zealots in the true definition of the word, and that believes they are literally "holier than thou" (i.e. self righteous) on every social and political issue. By the way, Pelosi does not speak for all democrats, myself included, and frankly I can't stand the woman. Her and Reid give democrats a bad name because they stoop to the level of Republicans in their partisan attacks and level of hypocrisy.

Good ol' Newt continues to try to speak for the Republicans along with Cheney and Limbaugh. This is and will continue to be the face of their party and until they change, this country will never embrace them. Also, what office does Gingrich hold now....not a one, so isn't he the trivial politician??! I agree with him though that their should be a full inquiry to whether Pelosi is telling the truth because someone needs to take accountability.

JB   May 15th, 2009 12:09 pm ET

First, if you recall, i was Newt Gingich and the Republican controlled Congress that balanced the budget and created a surplus. And, it is amazing that people like Dona Brazile cries and complains when a Republican is "paiting with a broad brush" when speaking about liberals being intolerant to other peoples views. Then you read almost every post by CNN viewers and "reporters" and they do just that in regards to republicans. Can you say hypocrites?

Todd in Georgia   May 15th, 2009 12:09 pm ET

Obama Victim   May 15th, 2009 12:08 pm ET

Gingrich doesn't really have to make her look silly.................she is doing a great job of that hersef

Sniffit   May 15th, 2009 12:08 pm ET

So? Even if she knew, it wouldn't have and doesn't matter. She had no power nor authority to stop it (nor to have started it in the first place)and speaking up publicly about it, given the GOP's propensity to enjoy a good burning at the stake of anyone considered a heretic, would have resulted in her prosecution. The most the GOP can hope to do with this tyrade is distract from the FACT that Bush and Cheney committed crimes against humanity in our names, deserve to be prosecuted for it and Obama has no choice if he wants to uphold his oath of office.

That black blob in the picture is the dark side of the force moving in to envelope his soul. Let the hate flow through you Darth Gingrich. He's like Dr. Evil, but instead of sitting around stroking a cat, it's a red herring.

Joseph   May 15th, 2009 12:08 pm ET

Bush authorized torture, the OLC made the illegal sound legal, Cheney implemented it, Rice "conveyed" the authority, the CIA did it, and Pelosi heard about it.

Even without a gag order on what she could say or do, her briefing pales in comparison to the culpability of those who are directly responsible for using illegal techniques for interrogation of those who are disarmed and in our custody.

The Speaker is up for reelection every 2 years like the rest of the House. Her constituents may remove her from office for this or any other number of reasons. But, that is all beside the point as is the time and extent of her knowledge of torture. As Steny Hoyer said last evening, even if the entire House voted publically in favor of torture, that does not make it legal. That is not how the system works. Let’s bring in everybody and have them testify under oath—including Madam Speaker, if that’s what is wanted—and go from there. Newt is irrelevant to everyone but Newt.

Brett   May 15th, 2009 12:08 pm ET

I knew that she is LIAR to everyone. That is why I never liked her ever since! she better to be leave senate seat in 2010!!

G   May 15th, 2009 12:08 pm ET

A big loser. What is he 5yrs old? lol No doubt this is all political. I can't believe well I kinda can that the republican party is more upset about Pelosi than the fact that torture took place even though Bush deny it!

banana   May 15th, 2009 12:08 pm ET

Oh Newt... you're still a pig.

Scott   May 15th, 2009 12:08 pm ET

I can't wait for the day when democrats don't respond to any criticism, with an unrelated rant about Bush lying, WMDs, and the like.

Mike in Houston   May 15th, 2009 12:08 pm ET

We are wasting far too much time listening to voices on the sideline. Its become exhausting watching people try and do everything in their power to keep a spotlight on themselves when they are not on stage.

As far as the Speaker goes and the matter of what she knew and didnt know....the country just spent 8 years living under the lies and twisted leadership of Bush and company. As speaker, Pelosi failed to impeach Bush and removed it off the table. That failure alone calls her judgment and character into question long before this issue ever came up.

Rob Johnson   May 15th, 2009 12:08 pm ET

Pelosi is a loser, and arguably the single biggest liability Obama has.

However, even if she did know about waterboarding and torture, it is not like it was her idea, and there is nothing she could have done to stop it. The Democrats were in the minority then, and the idea that if she had only said something she could have prevented it from happening is a fairy tale.

If Pelosi is found to be lying, by all means she should answer for that. But the real blame here lies with the people who came up with the idea and bent US law into a pretzel to justify their twisted agenda.

joann   May 15th, 2009 12:07 pm ET

And so are you, Newt!

Tom   May 15th, 2009 12:07 pm ET

I am a liberal, and can't stand the GOP at all. However, I don't like Pelosi, either. The problem with her is that she is an ideologist, and not a realistic problem solver.

Pres. Obama is a practical and analytical thinker who takes a problem apart, and figures out ways to deal with it from many angles while observing cause and effect in the process.

Pelosi, on the other hand, has some fixed ideals on which she obsesses, and has a very rigid mind. She is ok at attacking the political right, but definitely not good at building consensus and getting problems solved. At this point, she is a stumbling block for the democratic party and Obama; she slows things down.

If she was really informed about the harsh interrogation techniques back in 2002/03 and has lied about it all along the way, then this is going to be the end of it. She will lose all credibility.

Lisa in Shelton   May 15th, 2009 12:07 pm ET

President Bush took the biggest surplus and turned it into the biggest deficit. He and Cheney crafted the Patriot act to subvert protecions citizens have in the constitution. They fired lawyers due to political agendas, they outed a spy which is treasonous, they got lawyers to craft opinions that torture was legal and now Repugs are trying to shift the blame for their host of ciminal acts into focusing on what the Speaker knew when? Are you kidding me?! If that reptile Newt has the goods, why doesn't he release the CIA transcripts – until they're out he needs to put a sock in it.

Fair is Fair   May 15th, 2009 12:07 pm ET

In public, you still screech about "family values," while your own practice shows you don't care about it one tiny bit.

Newt, you dare call someone else "despicable, dishonest, and vicious?" In the words of Joseph Welch–a man who brought more honor to his post than Gingrich could ever hope to do–"You have done enough. Have you no sense of decency, sir? At long last, have you left no sense of decency? [...] If there is a God in Heaven it will do neither you nor your cause any good."

Dale   May 15th, 2009 12:06 pm ET

She's a fraud. People talk about her all the time saying how can anyone ever trust anything that she says. Her first reponse to any question is to lie and say whatever she thinks fits at the time.

What I want to know is who in their right minds ever supported her to be the speaker in the first place. She acts like she's in first grade.

We have this person representing the United States?????? You have got to be kidding me, I wonder what other countries REALLY say if they were telling the truth.

We have many politicians just like her. When will the truth tellers appear in our government and when will companies and people back the ones that should be there? When will the campaigns be run on even ground where support from big corperations and money don't decide what the rest of us have to deal with for the next term? We are a joke and we have many people in our government that just don't belong there.

Mike   May 15th, 2009 12:06 pm ET

Ah the demorats are trying to hide the light of the truth from the American people. Calling the CIA liars will not sit well with them and stand by for the notes from the briefings to show up on the tube. Of course abc and nbc will not air it. You air heads who only get your news from them is the reason you are so misinformed. I cannot wait for 2010 then finally 2012.

Ron   May 15th, 2009 12:06 pm ET

I'm not a huge Pelosi fan, but isn't this like the pot calling the kettle black? Here's a politician as scumy as they come, criticizing Pelosi?

Please note, Newt says "I don't think the Speaker of the House can lie to the country on national security matters,"

But I guess in his book, it is ok for the President, the Vice President, and everyone under him to lie about it, right? You know, the old "Iraq had ties to Al-Qaeda" crap? "The WMD" crap? , the "we do not torture" crap?

All I can say is, be carefull, republicans. You want an inquiry? You just might get one you wish you hadn't opened....lmao

Newt's view of the situation is absolutely correct. either Nancy is dumb as a door nail (which I don't think is the case). Or she is affraid to admit the truth which is not acceptable. If she was not able to ask the right questions and do her job to the fullest then she is not capable of doing the job she has right now. THIS IS SERIOUS BUSINESS. I am SIXK and TIRED of our elected officials not doing what is right for us as a country. I live in Cali and my entire family will not vote for her when the time comes. She even make the satement "do you think we (the gov't) can stop the CIA from doing what they want? come... on.... She needs to be remove PERIOD. she is just trying to save her own ASS. what a joke

It is the new Democratic theme, a lie well stuck to is as good as the truth.

gus   May 15th, 2009 12:06 pm ET

If Mr. Gringrich feels that Pelosi should not lie about national security measures and should be prosecuted, then lets get the Bush administration in line to be proscecuted as well. They lied to the nation about weapons of mass destruction to get us into a war we could never win. They lied and misled this country for 8 years.
I just don't understand how Bill Clinton can be impeached for impropreity and George Bush goes unscathed for putting this country in financial ruins because of a war he was determined to make happen no matter what.

Greg, San Francisco, CA   May 15th, 2009 12:06 pm ET

But obviously it is okay for the President (Bush) and Vice President (Cheney) to lie to America – huh? Geez – the GOP is really grasping at straws to keep the focus off of them! It's ridiculous!!

Hopefully the American people are smarter than this and can see right through yet another dirty Republican trick! I've never seen a party with lower morals!! I pray they NEVER return to power again!

Larry from RI   May 15th, 2009 12:05 pm ET

Stop trying to change the subject to what Pelosi "knew"!
The issue still is, and will always be "who authorized and perpetrated the crime of torture"

If Pelosi is suspected of a crime then she should be charged and prosecuted right along side those from the Bush administration who authorized and committed this heinous crime against humanity!

Pelosi's involvement does not, in any way let Dubbya and friends off the hook! Since when does one persons complicity in a crime absolve the other perpetrators of that same crime of any wrong doing?

This is just another example of failed logic and false choices from the GOP – torture is illegal and is a crime against humanity PERIOD!

Thank God Gingrich has always been such an HONEST MAN.

What would we do without the great honesty of the Republicans.

And why did you leave Mr. Gingrich?????

Go home and enjoy your retirement. Tired of hearing you!!!!!
And all the other innocent Republicans!!!!

David   May 15th, 2009 12:04 pm ET

This is exactly right:

"The fact is, she either didn't do her job, or she did do her job and she's now afraid to tell the truth."

Ralph   May 15th, 2009 12:04 pm ET

Fine. Let's investigate ALL who had a role in committing torture. Where did the commands come from? Was it a violation of Geneva? Was it a violation of human rights? Investigate and prosecute.

Or perhaps this is another "witch hunt" by the republicans against the Democrats. Distract, shift blame, cause the public to lose focus. That's how you control them, that's the republican way.

Funny, I used to like Newt. To bad he's turned out to be just another bitter, washed up republican, eager to recapture his "glory days".

I almost hate to admit it, but I actually find myself having a ever so slight amount of respect for W for vowing to keep his trap shut about the current administration. I guess he has no choice, since the puppet master (Cheney) has struck out on his own.

James H   May 15th, 2009 12:04 pm ET

This is coming from a guy who, in an attempt to defend the Bush administration's stance on torture, opinted out that the Obama administration hasn't taken any steps to pass laws about waterboarding. Hello Newt!! It has already been illegal for over a century! Who's the real loser?

rachel   May 15th, 2009 12:04 pm ET

I nevered liked Pelosi too much, people call Hillary power hunry Pelosi takes the cake on hunger for power.

No Incumbents 2010   May 15th, 2009 12:04 pm ET

Ginrich is a jerkwad who wants to change the subject of whether the people who CONDUCTED the torture should be excused or held accountable. There is no evidence that Pelosi or anyone else was briefed that torture was taking place. When Rep. Jane Harmon raised questions it had no effect on the Bush/Cheney torture program which was conducted NOT to protect America but to intentionally produce false statements supporting a non-existent Iraq / Al-Qaeda link.

JAE   May 15th, 2009 12:04 pm ET

Pelosi IS a liar. Instead of coming forward and admitting her faults, which she has plenty, she blames this situation of being briefed on the Bush administration. PURE CRAP. Pelosi ALWAYS passes the buck to someone else. She's a slimeball, dem. liar.

Newt is 100% correct, but, because the dems love Pelosi the Pig so much, they'll overlook her garbage. Pelosi as Speaker is an absolute joke to begin with. She had NO CLUE about what she's doing AND lies EVERY CHANCE she gets. She wouldn't know the truth if it was staring her right in her UGLY face!

Where's all the dems now, with their, "we want answers and an investigation?" Oh, yeah, that DOESN'T apply to them. What a buch of B.S. the dems are.

Alicia   May 15th, 2009 12:04 pm ET

Jon   May 15th, 2009 12:03 pm ET

Come on, what does Newt know about this? Last time I checked he hasn't held an official government job in quite some time, so I don't think he's in any position to be calling people liars when he couldn't possibly know all the facts. I agree with Pelosi that all transcripts of meetings she had with the CIA should be released. Then the people can see exactly what she was and was not told. If it turns out she was lying she should be held accountable. Until that happens uninformed blowhards like Newt should keep their mouths shut.

He had big plans in "94" on how the GOP were going to screw over the American people. He is a hypocrite, liar and a scum bag. How can you answer for someoe else when you were not in the same meeting. I don't care much for Nancy but lets not create distraction from the facts. Newt's ButtBoys Cheney and Bush are criminals who belong behind bars..

I'm no fan of Pelosi, but this little piece of excrement should shut up and go play with his contract on America. Pheonix85   May 15th, 2009 12:02 pm ET

Seriously, it's sad to know the vast majority of commenters on here are grown adults, clearly all with severe emotional problems.

Knee-jerk reactions, the sky is falling rhetoric, pitting one side against the other in an attempt to show superiority by means of morality and opinion. All the while forgetting how incapable we all are of asserting any belief without clinging to our own versions of reality.

If you can truly act like you've never lied you've proved my point.

Yeah, whatever, let's not forget who started all the lies in the first place, regarding the war in Iraq, weapons of mass destruction, and the best of all Mission Accomplished 7 years ago. Even if Pelosi knew something and now doesn't recall, the fact is that this whole fiasco was started by the Bush/Cheney dictatorship, and trying to blame Pelosi for any of it is just absurd and a mask that the republicans are trying to use to divert attention from the investigation into war crimes that were committed by the Bush administration. Guilt by association doesn't work in this case. The attacks from the right are so vicious because they are still stinging from their loss in November. No other reason.

PeaceProsperityLove   May 15th, 2009 12:01 pm ET

Her response and technical sidestepping has all the earmarks of a lie.

Its always the wrong response to go after the accuser and Pres Obama is slowly retrenching in his positions and moving closer to Bush...I call it Bush Lite

Ffor those that are beginning to understand the horrible scenario Bush was thrown into but, who are not yet ready to say as a President
he was perfect I agree, but Obama is really not so far different and getting similar all the time.

No lofty speach can change that. I actually like both of them and can appreciate the tough spot that occurs from Pres candidate to teh real deal.

Bpin   May 15th, 2009 12:01 pm ET

I think it is clear that she is not telling the truth. She acts like it is the CIA's job to make sure she knows. In her press conference, she was dancing like Ginger Rodgers. There is no place in Congtrss for a liar. Her and Chris Dodd need to resign or need to be removed!!!!!

And while we're at it the American people need to clean The White House up as well. There's a few good folks up there, but most are dishonest and in it for themselves only.

Karla   May 15th, 2009 12:00 pm ET

Distraction is the name of this game. The Republicans know that if this goes to a Judicial Hearing, things are going to come out about the Bush/Cheney Admin that they voted with and that will bury them deeper than they already are. Pelosi and the Dems at this point, 2002 were not in power. A 2 yr old could see through this crap.

MartyMar   May 15th, 2009 12:00 pm ET

I say let's open it ALL up and let the heads roll no matter what side of the aisle they stand on.

As for Pelosi, I guess if she is a liar she's only continuing the legacy of old Newt "The Poot" Gingrich. I'm totally convinced this stooge will not leave the news cycle because he's going to try to run for President in 2012. He soomehow believes his mid 90's playbook is still effective in today's politics. You are the biggest loser "Poot".

JLS   May 15th, 2009 12:00 pm ET

The biggest problem with this is Pelosi is saying the CIA lied. Let's see what other democratic politicians have to see about that. Many were involved with these discussions. But Nancy is the only one accusing the CIA of lying. Time to back it up, my dear. Don't think you can!!

psr   May 15th, 2009 12:00 pm ET

Jeff...No story on Pelosi's lying because you are reading CNN...never ANY negative stories allowed on Democrats, only on Republicans!!

Check out Fox news for a change of pace.

Nathan,   May 15th, 2009 12:00 pm ET

I find it incredible that the Republicans want to talk about what Pelosi knew about an activity they don't consider to be criminal. Although any right thinking person would conside the despicable act of torturw criminal the Republicans want to focus on Pelosi instead of their own criminal behavior. Unfortuantely a full assault on this criminal behavior and the criminals who ordered it and did it is nto what Obama is doing. This just gives the Republicans some reason to think they were right.

Obama is wrong not to take to task fully all those involved. This is a great disappointment and I believe will hurt him in the future. The less he looks like Bush and that rogue regime the better he looks to America and the rest of the world.

Catty   May 15th, 2009 12:00 pm ET

how can you people defend this woman? She is absolutely deplorable!! She has done nothing for my state, and even less for congress! You can continue to blame bush all you want if it makes you feel better, but don't be so dilusional as to think she's not going to lie save her political life!

mike   May 15th, 2009 12:00 pm ET

the point of the matter that those that will defend Pelosi now due to their own partisan beliefs is if you put yourself out to be holier than now and above reproach you had darn well better be.

If you need examples check with Eliot Spitzer.

TomJay   May 15th, 2009 12:00 pm ET

Either Pelosi is a liar, or she is totally incompetent. In either case, she is proving to be an embarassment to the Democrats.

Hey Newt, did you ever call Cheney or Bush (43) or Yoo a "big loser?" You want to see a big loser, look in the mirror. It is remarkable that someone as shallow and uninformed as Pelosi can be elected to any office, let alone become Speaker of the House. It is also embarrassing to me that she is one of our political leaders and a representative of this country when she visits others. She dumbs down the United States.

When she speaks publicly, her constant search for the next word reveals her intellectual inadequacies and own insecurity about whether she should have a voice in our government.

Lastly, her “memory” and those like her is fogged by the ideological goggles that will never separate her eyes from reality.

Good grief . . . .

Glennis   May 15th, 2009 11:59 am ET

There may have been a dumber Speaker of the House in our nation's history, but I seriously doubt it. She IS a loser.

"no proof other than words from Bush administration officials"???

Well, to all of you left-wing self-righteous blind-faith Pelosi/Reid/Obama worshipers, here's a piece of unpleasantness for you: The recent CIA memos on the House briefings that Pelosi and other Democrats attended, wherein it is revealed that Pelosi WAS, in fact, informed of waterboarding, were prepared by a CIA led by and spoken for by none other than Leon Panetta, a left-wing heavyweight dating back to the days of the Clinton administration. Are we to believe that he is speaking on behalf of the Bush administration??

Face it – none of you left-wing zealots can take the heat when one of your so-called "leaders" is exposed as the duplicitous, lying hypocrits that they really are.

She thinks she is above integrity, and that she will be protected by the "GOLDEN BOY". It is beyond comprehension that the Speaker of the House would act so foolishly! The woman is a skunk, and she needs to be investigated throughly, and then removed...

ez   May 15th, 2009 11:59 am ET

If Pelosi is guilty for not speaking up against torture; what then do we do with the Bush administration who authorizes it?

Jayden,FL   May 15th, 2009 11:59 am ET

Hey Newt where was your opinions during the Bush Admin. Bush started a false war HE LIED TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE

Gstreet   May 15th, 2009 11:59 am ET

As one of the greatest 'losers', Newt should be able to recognize another loser. NOT!

shane   May 15th, 2009 11:59 am ET

I couldn't agree more. Both sides would benefit by removing her. Pelosi was the driving force behind the motive to release the interrogation memos, and she is proving to be blatantly dishonest. The little credibility she enjoyed has withered away. I cannot believe that there isn't more outrage. Who prepared her for yesterday's press conference? Maybe that person should be fired first.... I would hope that no one tries to defend her.

Greg Smith, Clifton Heights PA   May 15th, 2009 11:58 am ET

President Bush was a great President, Dick Cheney was a great Vice President, the Republican Party is the American Party. We now know how disaster the Democrats are in POWER. Looking forward to 2010 & 2012.

George   May 15th, 2009 11:58 am ET

How can he call her a loser? She is in office. Newt isn't. Just think if the republicans would have won and followed the Bush wish list, where would social security be now if it had been invested in the stock market. Newt and his buddies are on the outside looking in. They are the TRUE losers; not Nancy!!

VON BISMARK,Vienna.   May 15th, 2009 11:58 am ET

Does knowing about torture make it lawful? The more the Republicans stick to this nonsense of who knew what when ,the the more it becomes imperative to find out the truth and makes the Republicans the REAL losers. Find out the truth with a truth commission.
The question should be:who permitted the use of torture and when?

Irene   May 15th, 2009 11:58 am ET

Sounds like the GOP is sinking to new lows! (Just when you thought that they hit bottom.)

Pelosi was set up by the mean GOP machine. How dare you try to pin the Bush/Cheney reign of terror on her!

Curtis   May 15th, 2009 11:57 am ET

Newt, it will serve you well directing your energy toward rebuilding the Grand OLD Party. Besides, what idiot would seek your advice on leadership?

mike   May 15th, 2009 11:57 am ET

Hey Newt, think youre rising in the ranks, eh? Well fat boy, you republicans are on the wane and hope you stay that way.

Honest Abe   May 15th, 2009 11:57 am ET

We aren't fooled Republicans... You twisted the truth like you always do. Lying is common practice in the GOP!

patNY   May 15th, 2009 11:57 am ET

Newt is like Rush...saying outrageous nonsense to get attention...the hallmark of a pathetic poor excuse for a man with E.D.!

Darryl B   May 15th, 2009 11:57 am ET

It is funny to see Newt Gingrich, indeed ANY Republican, to start yapping about how lying politicians are damaging the party.

It is also curious that he is attacking Pelosi for lying about CIA torture memos rather than attacking Cheney and W. for authorizing the torture in the first place.

Tulsa   May 15th, 2009 11:57 am ET

HA! the biggest hypocrite the Republicans have is on the attack!

If Pelosi knew and is now lying, she should be OUT. NOW.
If she was briefed on what techniques were being used but couldn't say anything because of national security, then she should say that.
If the briefings are consistant with what she is saying, i.e., "We were briefed on methods that had been vetted, but not used" then there is a whole different set of circumstances.
In the end, the only way we are going to put this matter to rest is to have a COMPLETE investigation and all who devised, allowed, accepted and were complicit in the use of these methods of torture should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Regardles of party affiliation.

Let's clean up our act and be the country our fathers fought and died for.

Hypocrite Much Newt?   May 15th, 2009 11:56 am ET

Pot meet kettle

Denny   May 15th, 2009 11:56 am ET

Anybody else think this headline is a bit deceiving? Granted he used those words, but the context in the article was clearly different then the implied headline......just more sensationalism.

Adele   May 15th, 2009 11:56 am ET

Torture is un-american and Newt G. should know it. Not that I support Pelosi on this (all democrats caved in during the Bush years) but please the Hollier-than-thou Gingrich should shut up.

Fair is Fair   May 15th, 2009 11:56 am ET

I actually hope Pelosi doesn't resign or gets thrown out. She's the best thing to happen to the Republican party in a long, long time.

Hey Nancy... if you were telling the truth, you wouldn't have had to keep referring to your notes in your press conference. You've been caught, Nancy. Give it up, Nancy.

Karma stinks, doesn't it, Nancy?

usnuzuluze   May 15th, 2009 11:56 am ET

Amen! Newt you speak for the country. Thank you

j in ohio   May 15th, 2009 11:56 am ET

So newt, its ok for bush and cheney to lie to the country about torture but not for pelosi (assuming if she did in fact know)

prairieguy   May 15th, 2009 11:55 am ET

And Newt is a big, fat windbag!!!

He has no idea what happened...maybe he should let an investigation ahppen and wait to make judgement as he has already done.

I notice he is not yelling for an investigation as to authorized waterboarding, which is torture.

No wonder the Repubs are losers with people such as Newt, Cheney and Rush being the faces of the party.

james   May 15th, 2009 11:55 am ET

Amen Newt

Eric   May 15th, 2009 11:55 am ET

Wow!! What a development!! Please!! This coming from the former speaker who HAD to resign due to ethic violations!!!! I just hope the Repukes keep trotting him out to make ridiculous comments so they will keep losing the faith of the American people. Please post Dick Cheney's comments soon-I can't wait!!!

rm   May 15th, 2009 11:55 am ET

Newt is just trying to make this into a political issue. It isn't. Indict them all, the people that ordered torture, the people that knew about it, and the people who carried it out, and let the courts sort it out.

Let justice be done though the heavens fall.

James, Ho. TX   May 15th, 2009 11:55 am ET

Excuse Me Newt, but how is it that You are no longer in Congress ?Followed by the PNAC, the GOP , Bush, Cheney, etc. ?

Imarriedmy sister in Mississippi   May 15th, 2009 11:55 am ET

Great photo of him stepping out from the darkness he lives in.His mama had the lizard part right at least.

Hannah Stevens   May 15th, 2009 11:54 am ET

No, I think Newt is a bigger loser than Pelosi. What is it with the republicans? They have nothing constructive to bring to the table and all they can do is name call and try to bring their opponent down. But if you want to name call, Newt is a sleaze ball, one of the criminal politicians wanting America to fail, supporting the rich over the people, deregulation and all of the above that has brought this country to its knees.

Rob   May 15th, 2009 11:54 am ET

Did Pelosi get tangled up in her own webs? When we seek to deceive oh the webs we do sew until we know not the truth. The Democrats need a new;honest leader in Congress.

Dan   May 15th, 2009 11:54 am ET

The GOP is focusing its energy on Pelosi as a way of blunting any investigation of the previous administration. The strongest defense for Cheney et al is that the minority party in congress didn't stop them.

Fenarkleman   May 15th, 2009 11:54 am ET

Looks like someone's jowls may be too tight.

Romelus   May 15th, 2009 11:54 am ET

Who cares when Nancy Pelosi knew...Nancy Pelosi didn`t waterboard ANYBODY. This is getting more publicity than the Republicans who did the actual torture!!! More Neocon smoke and mirrors...turning attention away from torture.....Let`s do what Nancy Pelosi wants, let`s have a truth commision and get to the bottom if it...I am sure they don`t want that!!!

Reality   May 15th, 2009 11:54 am ET

Vince: Typical response. When caught point the finger at someone else....

Clay   May 15th, 2009 11:54 am ET

And this from the man whose Contract on America brought our country to this point of decline. Newt is the one who first persuaded republicans in Congress that either they get their own way or obstruct any progress the other party might make. Talk about the pot calling the kettle black....

Carol   May 15th, 2009 11:53 am ET

Leave it to the Republicans. They don't want the actually policy makers investigated, but they want Nancy Pelosi investigated for knowing about it or not knowin about it. Condoleeza Rice and George Bush knew about it and George Bush lied and said that there was no torture going on. I think that is far worse than Pelosi. And being this was allegedly classified material, these people at the CIA were telling Intelligence Committe members to rip up memos, would not let them talk about it, etc. Yes, there is a strong possibility that the CIA is lying because for a long time, no one would even admit waterboarding was going on. All in the name of it being classified when in reality, it is all in the name of covering their own butts.

D in Texas   May 15th, 2009 11:53 am ET

Go away Newt. What a pest.

Dallas, TX   May 15th, 2009 11:53 am ET

What a joke this woman is!!

She knew full well about this and is now trying to back-peddle!

She's an idiot and needs to step down; she's done enough damage!

GET OUT NANCY!

Frozone   May 15th, 2009 11:52 am ET

Look out! It's the ghost of majorities past!!

Noneya   May 15th, 2009 11:52 am ET

I agree fully! Not only that, we should start criminal investigations into Bush, Cheney, Rice, and all of the others who denied any torture was occurring. Let's not stop at Democrats – let's go after *all* of the US officials who lied about torture.

Ed, Santa Fe, NM   May 15th, 2009 11:52 am ET

"... viciously using partisanship for the narrowest of purposes...."

"I don't think the Speaker of the House can lie to the country on national security matters...."

Gingrich just summed up the entire rotten Bush administration and its 8 years of LIES and PARTISAN POLITICS.

What the GOP is doing, and it's blatant and obvious, is to sidetrack the news to Pelosi. BUSH OKAYED THE TORTURE. GOP CONGRESS BACKED BUSH ON EVERYTHING.

Who cares if Pelosi knew in 2002 or 2003?

Jeff in Virginia   May 15th, 2009 11:52 am ET

Newt Gingrich calls out Nancy Pelosi for "using partisanship for the narrowest of purposes"...

Is this bizarro world? What was the Lewinski witch-hunt?

Had It   May 15th, 2009 11:51 am ET

If it takes getting rid of dems and reps – half of congress – in order to get Cheney and Bush, DO IT.

WAR CRIMES are not needed. The C riminals NEED TO GO. NOW. THEY STINK

Doug-ABQ   May 15th, 2009 11:51 am ET

Gingrich is the loser. His comments remind me of the expression "like a pot calling the kettle black."

Bob in Pa   May 15th, 2009 11:51 am ET

It's time for "Change" in the house leadership. Do us a big favor Nancy, step down now so we don't have to continue reading your lies.

Moi   May 15th, 2009 11:51 am ET

Look who is calling the kettle black!

Jinny Lee   May 15th, 2009 11:51 am ET

God....he sounds just like the GOP!

Tom St. Louis   May 15th, 2009 11:50 am ET

Really? Newt Gingrich calling someone out for extreme partisanship? He must be delusional if he doesn't see the irony.

Randolph Carter   May 15th, 2009 11:50 am ET

I'm a liberal, whatever that is, and I can't stand Nancy either. That said, who the hell cares what a radio entertainer says? Have a nice day!

truth is liberal sort of   May 15th, 2009 11:49 am ET

Pelosi LIES...

Vince   May 15th, 2009 11:49 am ET

"I don't think the Speaker of the House can lie to the country on national security matters," Gingrich said.

But, apparently, the President (Bush, that is) can?

DebM, Allentown, PA   May 15th, 2009 11:49 am ET

How does Newt know what happened in these briefings? Was he a fly on the wall, or more like a COCKROACH on the floor? I love how these holier-than-thou Republicans continue to hold themselves out as omnipotent, when in fact they truly know nothing of which they speak.

mike   May 15th, 2009 11:48 am ET

IMPEACH PELOSI!!!!

LIAR. you can't claim to be as pious as you do and lie to the American people.

She should at least lost all her power and at most be impeached.

What else aren't you telling us Ms Pelosi?

I and many others have NO FAITH in you.

I Am The Great And Powerful Rush Of Oz   May 15th, 2009 11:48 am ET

Cheney pushed torture to prove a "link" between al queda and Sadaam.

Why doesn't CNN report this.

Newt is well . . . a little newt.

Jeff in Virginia   May 15th, 2009 11:48 am ET

Distractions distractions!!

There is no story about Nancy Pelosi being exposed as a liar because there is no proof of her lying other than anonymous words of Bush administration officials.

Of course the Bush folk are going to lie about it. Anything to distract from the real issue at hand; that Bush and Cheney personally authorized torture, and then used the false information to invade Iraq.

On Pelosi, if she knew about this and did nothing, I'd like her hide nailed to the wall too. However, to say that her silence is a worse crime than that committed by Bush and Cheney- who gave the orders- is just pure idiocy.

Faux   May 15th, 2009 11:47 am ET
