WASHINGTON (CNN) – Speaker Nancy Pelosi responded Friday to CIA Director Leon Panetta's public disagreement with her charge that she was misled by the agency on the use of waterboarding and other aggressive interrogation techniques.

"We all share great respect for the dedicated men and women of the intelligence community who are deeply committed to the safety and security of the American people," she said in a statement issued by her office. "My criticism of the manner in which the Bush Administration did not appropriately inform Congress is separate from my respect for those in the intelligence community who work to keep our country safe.

"What is important now is to be united in our commitment to ensuring the security of our country; that, and how Congress exercises its oversight responsibilities, will continue to be my focus as we move forward."

It is transparently clear that we have a culture of corruption n our current administration....Have you ever heard the kettle calling the pot black...

I voted for Obama..but I did not endorse Pelosi.
Do not go against the CIA. They have the most difficult
Job that we cannot even think about. She needs to go.

Vic   May 15th, 2009 10:40 pm ET

Has everyone forgotten how, under the Bush/Cheney administration, totally messed up every department was. That includes the CIA, who could not be trusted to level with anyone about anything. As for Leon Panetta, whom we trust completely, it is hoped you understand that Speaker Pelosi is dealing strictly with the goings-on of the previous CIA - not the one you're heading up. I personally resent how Gingrich and others are tearing into her about the CIA situation, when we all remember how misleading they were. Looks like this is the best they can do since Nancy Pelosi has no sex-related skeletons in her closet! Get a life people, and let her be to do her job!

Enough !   May 15th, 2009 10:36 pm ET

Pelosi is repulsive. She should resign.

Jeff Spangler, Arlington, VA   May 15th, 2009 10:33 pm ET

I agree with David Brooks observation today that her press conference accusing the CIA of misleading Congress was "pathetic", but I disagree with David Gergen's overly charitable view that either she or Panetta is lying. This insufferable woman is lying.

John H   May 15th, 2009 10:32 pm ET

What is important now is to run this lying, dishonest politician out of office. Are you California voters listening to her deceitful testimony:?

robtr   May 15th, 2009 10:25 pm ET

My god Pelosi is a liar. Either that or she is senile. She knows the libtards with believe her regardless though. Let's look at what she actually said.

Q: Madame Speaker, just to be clear, you are accusing the CIA of lying to you in September 2002?

A: Yes, of misleading the Congress of the United States. Misleading the Congress of the United States.

Mark   May 15th, 2009 10:23 pm ET

Try to remember that when the breifings were supposed to have happend Leon Panetta was not the CIA director. So why wouldn't the CIA lie when they watched Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld and Powell lie to the nation, who cares about a few politicians, they have little value in the game of life.

yeah   May 15th, 2009 10:19 pm ET

First of all, lets not lose focus on the real problem, and that is TORTURE!! it doesnt matter what pelosi knew and when. There is nothing she could have done to stop bush and company from torturing people. many protests were submitted to Bush by the democrats to stop torturing. We dont need to be investigating pelosi on what she knew, we need to be investigating the former bush admin officials and prosecuting them!!!!!!! Republicans broke the law and thats the bottom line!!

Grace   May 15th, 2009 10:11 pm ET

I'm soooooo sick of the Republican Party!

How can ANYONE defend this lady?

Just look at the way she acts, and look at her body language during the news conference. Please people,,, LISTEN to this woman.
If you want your Democratic President to survive. This lady has to go.
I did not vote for Obama, but I do want him to do well, for the sake of the USA. But I have said it for months, Pelosi will ruin him.

Mark in Atlanta   May 15th, 2009 10:03 pm ET

Time for Nancy to go. We cannot allow her CYA campaign to deflect attention away from holding Bush Administration war criminals accountable for their actions. Seems likely that she knew what was going on by 2003. She should have joined the tens of millions of us who were screaming bloody murder about the villians who made our nation a nation of torturers.

Democrat no more   May 15th, 2009 9:57 pm ET

Yeah, sure Nanc. After you sat silent on "Enhanced Interrogation" techniques, and it came out that there was torturing going on, you jumped on the "bad Bush admin was torturing" through 2 elections. And now it is clear that you were aware of them 2002 and ddn't say a word. Then you come out and blame the CIA for lying and misleading congress and now you want to unite after blaming the folks who do this important work to keep your a88 and ours safe.

speaking of a88es,....

Retired US Army Officer - Kansas   May 15th, 2009 9:51 pm ET

Gee-I don't care what Pelosi knew or when, I want those responsible for approving and ordering the torture of prisoners. They have dishonored those who put their lives on the line daily defending our nation and our Consitution, they are less than scum and are on the same level as those we are fighting.

Buddy Gilmour   May 15th, 2009 9:44 pm ET

Pelosi and Reid are dinosaurs and not fit to lead in the new post-modern Democratic party. Which is more of a rainbow-world-view than a collection of self-interest groups. Would like to see them replaced with younger, untainted, more global/forward looking people (of color).

Proud DHS radical   May 15th, 2009 9:44 pm ET

I believe there's only two people in this country that believes and supports Nancy Pelsoi...Keith Obermann and Rachel Madcow.

change has arrived   May 15th, 2009 9:43 pm ET

it's time for our President to step in and tell lying pelosi to resign, you can't have it both ways pelosi, you lied and you know that you did, our country's safety is more important than your lies.

Tim   May 15th, 2009 9:34 pm ET

The debate is over whether or not the president should have the authority to make tough decisions in drastic times.

I say yes, the democrats are diverting attention from the real issue. Obama does not want that responsibility, he is not a leader.

alvino   May 15th, 2009 9:27 pm ET

Are all you right wing nuts upset with Pelosi because she opposed invading Iraq in Bush's phony war?

Dave in Illinois   May 15th, 2009 9:26 pm ET

Nancy Pelosi is turning out to be quite the tap dancer. If she spent as much time representing the people as working to stay in power, she might have remembered accurately what she had been told and when. I think she ought to take her act on the road and leave the House to people who are serious about their responsibilities.

Zealots Go Home   May 15th, 2009 9:26 pm ET

Was Panetta CIA Director under Bush, no. Does he know what went down under Bush's CIA, NO!

alvino   May 15th, 2009 9:25 pm ET

I hope the right wing nuts realize that after a full investigation, they are really going to be embarassed by the Bush Administration violating the only reason to use torture: To protect us from an imminent attack, not to try to establish a phony link between Iraq and al Qaeda.

Susan   May 15th, 2009 9:22 pm ET

There was an interview somewhere when Bush was still in office where she said she was sworn to secrecy in those intel meetings, and that she could not object to anything, nor tell anyone. That is why impeachment was never on the table. She knew what was going on but was bound by an oath not to tell...and Bush knew she wouldn't. Now she is stuck, and I almost feel sorry for her.
The bottom line is though, that they did lie to her about WHY they needed to torture people. It was not to protect Americans at all; it was to link Iraq with 9-11 to save their sorry behinds. And it did not work! It never works, and I believe as the real criminals here are brought to account, Pelosi will be found to be just a bit player who really had no options at the time (and maybe not now either.)

ib   May 15th, 2009 9:20 pm ET

How can anyone take up for this woman? They must be far left wingnuts who can't or won't see what a lier this woman is. She needs to go back to where she came from and stay there. This country would be a lot better off without her.

Theresa   May 15th, 2009 9:19 pm ET

Nancy, Nancy! Keep on blaming Bush and keep on beating around the bush until you get dizzy and confuse everybody. If you were telling the truth, you would have said just one short sentence. You remind of the Court Jester.

Steve   May 15th, 2009 9:10 pm ET

Again, these types of stories get us away from the real issue, and that is our government tortured it's prisoners. This Pelosi thing is just a side show...

Rose   May 15th, 2009 9:08 pm ET

This woman is wacky. Now she says she respects the very people she called liars yesterday. It was the Bush Administration that misled and lied to Congress. She had better get herself a new shovel, the one she is using now isn't big enough any more.

roger dowdle, lockhart, Tx   May 15th, 2009 9:07 pm ET

When will politicians realize that it is better to admit to something rather than lie about it and be exposed. What she is doing is to change the question of misconduct from the bush admin and torture to her veracity and competence. As ashamed as I am to admit it, Gingrich is right- it now comes down to her and her honesty and capability to do her job, and to whether or not someody who cannot understand briefings should be allowed to attend them.

GOP double-talk & distraction   May 15th, 2009 8:56 pm ET

This is classic GOP double-talk and distraction. If you're guilty as hell, as they are, they figure, don't take responsibility (as they yammer at us day & night to do) - instead, throw out a red herring and see if it will stick. I can't believe they are getting away with it yet again.

Pelosi may have some secondary guilt - i'm not defending her - but time shouldn't be wasted on her until the primary criminals, Dick Cheney and GWB and their henchmen, are brought to justice.

Martin   May 15th, 2009 8:52 pm ET

Speaker Pelosi should be removed for her lies.

Limerick, Pennsylvania   May 15th, 2009 8:51 pm ET

Nancy, you have shown the world that you are not qualified to hold the office you were given. Please step down now. You are destorying our party and preventing our President from moving forward on important actions necessary for our nation. You have become an obstacle that needs to be removed. Do the right thing and resign.

Maybe the voters of California will let you keep a junior seat in the congress.

Ralphie   May 15th, 2009 8:50 pm ET

Barbara Ind in NY.... you should be celebrating the masses of stupid people in the U.S. and the deplorable educational system. Without both, no one like Obama could ever be elected to anything...much less President. Count your blessings.

Remember, Vote Democrat...because everyone deserves some of what you've worked so hard for.

Simmy   May 15th, 2009 8:47 pm ET

I understand the hatred and opposition coming from men....I'm perplexed by the women who are adamant about her guilt......It proves once again how successful Republicans are at spinning........This whole mess is a plot to distract the public from the failures of the NO party........

Nancy Pelosi is no more guilty than President Obama.....The Democratic coalition needs to step up to the plate and stand with this woman......How ironic it is to be sitting in the catbird seat, and still be intimidated by the powerless, toothless lions......Dems, are you listening?

Judy from PA   May 15th, 2009 8:45 pm ET

Wow, where did all the Obama-lover liberal comments go?? I used to see about 300 or so for every story on here. Interesting.

I also see gas is going up again, who are you going to blame this time?? Bush and Cheney are out. I guess I can blame Obama.

Adam   May 15th, 2009 8:44 pm ET

It's obvious that certain people are gunning for Pelosi. But....Pelosi did not mastermind this torture. Maybe we should ask ourselves why VP Cheney is showing up more in one week than he did in eight years in office? Could it be that he is very afraid he will be convicted????
And where oh where is the Führer himself, herr Rumsfeld??? Hiding out in Cheney's bunker?? Why isn't anyone asking how much of the torture was thought up in the mind of Rumsfeld. Where the heck is he right now??? And what about Bush's brain, Karl Rove? What did he know and when? Nancy Pelosi just may be a little forgetful. Does anyone remember President Regan saying over and over, "I do not recall that...." ?? Or someone in the CIA who was left behind by Cheney may have doctored the documents. All things are possible. Let's look at who ordered the water boarding...and let's not let old Rumsfeld slide under the fence!!!!

Ken in NC   May 15th, 2009 8:44 pm ET

This is really funny. I come to you and tell you that the information I am about to give you in this briefing is classified and you cannot admit knowledge of it to anyone. When confronted by a third party concerning this briefing and the information alleged to have been given by me or my agency, you make the denial that would be expected of you by saying you were never given this information or that any information given to you was classified. Now after hearing you deny ever being given this classified information, as you should, I do an about face and come forth saying that I (THE CIA) have proof that you were given this classified information that you could not admit to having been given. DUH.

I'm not defending Pelosi but this stinks.

john   May 15th, 2009 8:42 pm ET

Annie   May 15th, 2009 8:39 pm ET

Ok, here we go with the he said she said stuff. Hopefully it will all come out. What I don't understand is why Nancy Pelosi is being treated as the fall guy the Bush & Cheney torture policies, AND the fact that they tortured people to get false information to lead us into war with Iraq. Where is the outrage here, folks? If Nancy Pelosi knew we were torturing, she wasn't the only one who knew. go after all of them. Bring it all out in the open. This is our reputation here.

Sniff these...Sniffit   May 15th, 2009 8:32 pm ET

Just as I have predicted several times on this site.........

The dim party is in the beginning stages of their self-inflicted implosion. Happens to this bunch every time they make political gains. They want power so badly, yet can not handle it when they achive their dream.

They'll be swept from power within the next 2 election cycles.

I think carville overstated his prediction by..... 48 years!!!!!!

V. Clausewitz   May 15th, 2009 8:27 pm ET

Aw, c'mon. You all need to cut her some slack and quit picking on her just cause she isn't very smart. I mean, I don't see you all hounding Rangel, Boxer, or Conyer's for being blockheads........let's give lil o'l Nancy a break too, huh?

Jenn, Philadelphia   May 15th, 2009 8:26 pm ET

To all you people who think this issue is a distraction from truth, you're wrong. It's "part" of the truth. Who knew, what they knew, when they knew it and why they did nothing are important to the investigation. If the Speaker wants truth commissions, then she should be held as accountable as the previous administration. "Evil succeeds when good men do nothing." In this case, the Democrat party cannot claim it was just the doings of an evil administration, when they did nothing to stop it.

Rachaela   May 15th, 2009 8:20 pm ET

Interesting! All this outrage b/c Nancy Pelosi is lying about knowing that the Bush Administration used torture. So what I gather from this outrage is: it was torture, and the Bush adminstration was in fact using it.

Thanks for backing yourselves into another corner and proving two very important points, Republicans!

Charles'   May 15th, 2009 8:17 pm ET

The War Crimes tribunal needs to go after Bush/Cheney but also it needs to bring closure on all of the Republicans that have soiled the American dream – death by hanging for them all - anything else begs for a revolution

Purple Spider   May 15th, 2009 8:15 pm ET

Pelosi is trying to find numerous ways to "wiggle out" of this mess of Waterboarding knowledge. She is contradicting the CIA, she is blaming the Bush Administration, and it goes on and on – how many lies can she manifest? And how much support from her party does she have at this point? Time for a new "Speaker of the House"!

Marcia, Marcia, Marcia in CA   May 15th, 2009 8:14 pm ET

The CIA lies all the time. People forget about Iran-Contra and (how can anybody) the so-called "false intelligence" claimed by Bush that the CIA gave the Bush Administration that pushed them to illegally invade Iraq.

Everyone is going after Pelosi, while POS Cheney tried to get an Iraqi tortured so he could have "proof" of an Al-Queda – Iraq – 9/11 connection.

The Bush Administration lied to us every single day.

Where is our moral compass?

No Hillary = No Obama   May 15th, 2009 8:13 pm ET

Personally, I don't think Pelosi actually remembers what she was told, by whom or when. That's my take. The American people should file a class action suit against the federal government for acts of negligence causing financial ruin, displacement, job loss and home loss. Included in this should be a statement about post traumatic stress caused by having to view the pictures of tortured terrorists, & the blood and guts of 6 years of a needless war.
Pelosi eptiomizes the dysfunctional federal government we have all fallen victim to,

annie for Palin   May 15th, 2009 8:08 pm ET

Pukelosi flat out lies and it is bush's fault? What am I missing? She is no worse than 98% of the politicians in dc but she got caught in her own lies and doesn't even lie well – where's my notes oh god they are out of order where are they. Not only is she a flat out liar but she is totally imcompetent! She can't even keep her written notes together so she can read her lies!!!

Scott   May 15th, 2009 8:08 pm ET

Wait... let me get this straight. We're supposed to TRUST the word of the CIA under the Bush Administration? I thought we were moving on from being a bunch of gullible Americans. What happened? Come on folks, ya gotta throw her a bone...

Independent to the Max   May 15th, 2009 7:58 pm ET

Typicall politician who is full of crap. Back when the country was in a furor over terrorism it wouldn't have been politically expedient to protest the torture techniques that she was obviously fully briefed on. But now, 6 years later, when she is feeling protected and safe and it's politically popular to be against torture she comes out swinging and denying. ALL politicians are liars, it is only a matter of degree. Pelosi is a fraud and a fool on par with Bush.

The real question is why do americans actively endores such politicians and then passively look the other way when their trust is so obviously betrayed? Are american stupid, lazy, or too blinded by ideology not to recognize the operating conceit in their politicians and to then do something about it. Citizens should expect and even demand better of their leaders, regardless of political party.

Vic   May 15th, 2009 7:57 pm ET

Just goes to show how politicians stick together – regardless of party.
The Dems were the ones who gave Bush the green light to invade Iraq – all because the majority didn't read any of the documents.

Hillary tried to use the same argument Nancy.

Why not just show at least a modicum of character and admit that she knew and didn't do anything – because Pelosi is nothing more than a crony-backing, double-talking, back-stabbing, hypocritical, typical American politician.

tee   May 15th, 2009 7:56 pm ET

Pelosi is not just a bad liar, she is an anti-American liar.

Career serviceman   May 15th, 2009 7:51 pm ET

Everyone, Democrats and Republicans, knows Peolosi can't be trusted. If it was a Republican Speaker of the House lying and changing their story as Nazi Pelosi continues to do, there would have been an investigation immediately! So much for transparency; I guess it only applies to Republicans. Pelosi changes her stories, the White House changes their positions on various subjects such as release of photos, or resuming trials at Gitmo.

Well, you Democrats voted for change: you got it! You just didn't know that the change would be continuous. Not only that, those positions taken by the White House are moving more towards the previous administration. How 'bout that.

tee   May 15th, 2009 7:51 pm ET

So what if she knew about the torture. She couldn't do anything about it. Bush on the other hand, could have done something about it. This is a dead issue a distraction, something the rethugs are good at.

Hopeful Optimist   May 15th, 2009 7:50 pm ET

Lifelong liberal Dem here. I say she's gotta go, even if not lying. Cuz right now we need to give every appearance that everything about us is lily pure. We're on a roll right now, and the repubs are lookin' for anything so they can say GOTCHA. And if they can find one chink in the armor they'll move in for the kill. Thats the kind of people they are. So Nancy, you gotta take one for the team and fall on your sword, guilty or not.

WH   May 15th, 2009 7:50 pm ET

Nobody can believe anything coming out of the ex-Bush administation or their officials. They were secretive about everything they did. You honestly think they let the democrats in on what they were really doing. Give me a break. They're just riding on this story with the media because they try to hold on to anything they can to continue to try to distract from what we should be doing. We have lots of leftover problems to solve. Now they're trying to blame their torture techniques on Pelosi as if she signed the order. It is a witch hunt. They probably burned the truth.

Who misled the Congress, American people and even Colin Powell during the lead-up to the Iraq war? Who gave incorrect information about WMD and the real reasons for going into Iraq? You were all hoodwinked by the last administration and some of its agencies.
Many of you are still being manipulated now. They want you to focus on Nancy Pelosi instead of the real issue which is who planned and ordered the tortures. She did not say that they lied to her. She said they misled the Congress. That can be done by withholding some aspects of the truth or even vaguely twisting some facts. Unfortunately many journalists would rather pick at scabs than look for the real cause of the wounds beneath.

Answer: Because of the incompetence of the Democrat party.
Question: Are the Republicans better politicians?

Question: Who cares more about the American people?
Answer: Politicians cares only about power, people doesn’t count.

I can not believe that Republicans want to "investigate" Nancy Pelosi. Oh the outrage, how could she doubt the CIA? Oh please, even Bush said that he got "faulty" intelligence – it was not HIS fault we went to war in Iraq over a lie. No, no, it was the freakin' CIA's fault!!!!
Also, now we hear that Dick Cheney wanted continued torture to try and prove the connection between Iraq and 9/11. This is the guy who outed a CIA agent, then this chicken hawk Mr. 5 time deferment let someone else take the fall, being too cowardly to even fess up to it.

Regarding the brain transplant comment, it reminds me of the second G.W. election–supporting a proven liar. Who did yuou vote for?

If you honestly have a problem with people who support a proven liar, at least have the integrity to admit that you have a problem with people who supported Bush. Or, would this hit too close to home.

I don't think that she is a PROVEN liar. It may turn out that she is a liar, but, would it surprise anyone to discover that the CIA was the liar. Surely it would not surpeise anyone that the former administratiion was the liar.

Mel of Alexandria   May 15th, 2009 7:05 pm ET

We should refrain from passing judgment on Speaker Pelosi, before we read what she read about the CIA actions. Were there minutes kept at the hearing? What was recorded? If the briefings were just verbal, it is conceivable that a Dick Cheney operative could have said it in a way as to hide the full implication. In the culture at the time, the Dick was having his way on every front. It seemed to have been a sinister operation that was bent on hiding the truth from the American people. If the briefings were not given in writing, no one can tell Ms Pelosi what she heard.

Dyan   May 15th, 2009 7:04 pm ET

Why don't we let the whole truth come out? Witnesses, subponeas, documents, picures, video, visitor logs, personal journals...... the whole she-bang. AND we'll also see who committed war crimes and who didn't. Isn't that far more important than this 'he said/she said' nonsense?

Ron   May 15th, 2009 7:00 pm ET

Hey Steve of NY...

What a classic comment. You are now blaming the Republicans for the rise of Speaker Pelosi. What is it with you Democrats? Face it. You've got a liar, antagonist, and deeply polarizing politician as the number three in line for the Presidency. What the Democrats do about her will speak volumes. My guess is that they will not challenge her, but rather find a way to blame Bush, just like she is trying to do now.

Think about it. The Speaker of the House didn't want to do anything about torture because she wanted to get more Democrats elected. Those were HER words. Deal with it!!!

Herb Gray   May 15th, 2009 7:00 pm ET

Pelosi, Boehner, McConnell and Reid, the Congressional leaders of both parties are all hacks who occupy their positions for only two reasons, seniority and/or skill at political infighting. None of the four is able to make a decent presentation to the American people. They are easily as poor a set of leaders as we've seen in a long time. Something needs to be done to change the selection of leaders.

Had It   May 15th, 2009 6:56 pm ET

In 2012 I'll vote for ANYONE that promises to prosecute Bush and Cheney and all the people in the House and Senate that went along with all the illegal crap concerning the "he wanted to klll my daddy" war that has helped run this country into bankruptcy.

I'll vote against anyone that wants to let the war criminals go free.

limey pedro   May 15th, 2009 6:54 pm ET

why do Americans allow their Republican administrations to get away with global catastrophes, widespread untruths and outstanding incompetence yet suddenly re-discover their supposed democratic instinct every time a Democratic administration takes over and all the previously redundant accountability tools are revived with gusto?

We in the UK have long ago disposed of the accountability tools in return for some balloons, shiny buttons and the crumbs from anyones table (yours, yours of course its .....)

Lynda/Minnesota   May 15th, 2009 6:54 pm ET

Seems as if Nancy is delivering some of her own distraction. Tit for tat.

David S.   May 15th, 2009 6:54 pm ET

She is so desparately trying to shove this under the rug. Her obession with the Bush Administration is going to be her undoing. She wanted so much to punish the GOP and saw waterboarding as a method to get at them but she forgot she was part of the decision to use it.

Trang, Fremont, CA   May 15th, 2009 6:53 pm ET

How do you know which parties tell the truth? You are not there at the meetings to point fingers. And for Boehner to say CIA always tell the truth and has nothing to hide ... he is naive. Heck, they have the president going out there deciding not to release the pictures. They have plenty to hide and would be ashamed if things come to light.

bess   May 15th, 2009 6:53 pm ET

Ms Pelosi's has allowed her total and complete hatred of the Bush administration to take her down a similar path of twisting truth until you can't recognize it yourself.

Get a Life!!-   May 15th, 2009 6:49 pm ET

People- Get a life and stop blogging and reading this stuff every dang day...

Bet Cnn won't post this- because they like lifeless people

2Nurselady   May 15th, 2009 6:46 pm ET

We, as Democrats, should expect that our own are accountable as much as we hold those of other Parties accountable for thier actions and inactions.

I believe that Nancy Pelosi pandered to the Bush administration and that she should have spoken up very loudly when human atrocities were taking place. I think it is a shameful legacy for her.

Newt Gingrich is targeting Pelosi. I think that, while Pelosi is having to explain herself, the impeachment trial of Newt Gingrich should be underway for his reported affair – cheating on his wife – and his own questionable activities far beyond that. He, Rove, Bush, Cheney, and Rumsfeld need to be held equally accountable for their own actions and inactions. The hypocrisy among them is glaring.

Ray Ray   May 15th, 2009 6:44 pm ET

@ Joan – the ederly woman writes,

"Please don't be taken in by this really malevolent person. Mrs Pelosi, just hang in there, Mrs. Clinton had dificulties and is just tough enough to withstand many problems in her past. My prayers are for Obama and democrats with good hearts."

-----

Joan, you'd so much better NOT posting your comments as you expose yourself to be a partisan man-hater.

Hillary was "innocent". Pelosi is "innocent". But Newt is the devil?

Lady – you'd better check who you're praying to because Jesus doesn't love leaders who want to make it easier to kill babies.

TTBALA   May 15th, 2009 6:44 pm ET

All of you idiots who are ranting and raving at Pelosi don't even know if she was breifed correctly and not lied to, she still would not have been able to do anything because it was clasified information, do you REPUBS ever learn a lesson, all you know is how to spit hatered shame on you!!!!

Don   May 15th, 2009 6:42 pm ET

OH My Goodness – "He said – She said – did not-did too. Where are we. Is this a grade school play ground at recess.

Dubja and Darth Cheney are the criminals – through in Rove and Rummy and have a trial.

It was Cheney and then Bush that misled the Congress and the Nation.

This has all the makings of a Criminal Activity.

haren   May 15th, 2009 6:42 pm ET

Biggest liar is our former president Bush who keep telling us that we don't torture

Bushed   May 15th, 2009 6:41 pm ET

I am a big fan of BO, but i could live without NP as speaker. She gives Dems a bad image.

i do think that if the Repubs want an investigation about this than bring it on. We may lose Nancy, but Geroge and Dick could go away for awhile.

Why do we not hear more about torturing Al Abi into making false confessions that got us into the Iraq war. This is some of the most important news of the last 8 years and its hardly being covered....

haren   May 15th, 2009 6:38 pm ET

Biggest liar is our former president who repeatedly said that we don't torture.

RR   May 15th, 2009 6:35 pm ET

GOPer   May 15th, 2009 6:33 pm ET

Can the people of San Francisco please put us out of our misery? The GOP is so inept; the only thing to unseat her will be her constituents back in San Francisco. Please San Franciscans, Please Put America Out Of Our Misery.

David   May 15th, 2009 6:32 pm ET

This proves that she is the ULTIMATE double talking politician – now she is not arguing the fact that she knew about it but that Bush didn't tell congress.

If she knew, she had a duty to tell congress, end of story – the ultimate COWARD and PARTISAN politician.

Anonymous   May 15th, 2009 6:29 pm ET

I am a lifelong Democrat but Pelosi needs to go. Pelosi has no credibility to begin with and this does not help. Pelosi is bringing the party down at a time when we should be seen as bringing back honesty and integrity to government.

janelle   May 15th, 2009 6:28 pm ET

It's obvious she's lying, and now she's back peddaling to get her hind end out of the frying pan before it gets put in the fire. Newt was right, there's only 2 ways this ends, Pelosi is either incompetent, or dishonost. Either way doesn't bode well for her or her political future. Her blind political ambition has finally bit her in the butt and she got caught in her own web.

Cobra Montana   May 15th, 2009 6:27 pm ET

I would even believe B.O. if he said she was lying.

Hart   May 15th, 2009 6:27 pm ET

Interesting how Pelosi keeps changing her story, I thnk she has five or six versions now. The original story that started all of this was that she stated she had not been briefed on enhanced torture techniques by the CIA. Then, when documents were produced that proved otherwise, she changed her story. Again, documents and people in attendance proved otherwise. Again and again she changed her story. This situation is one Pelosi created with her own words and actions. Bringing Bush and Cheney into it is a desperate attempt by her to distract the public from the real story, that she lied. Now that her staff has advised her it was dumb and political suicide to attack the CIA, she has changed her story again. The CIA is too smart to be diverted and Pelosi will suffer the political consequences of her ill advised attack on the CIA. Her political career is doner than a steak sent back to the chef as too rare. And she only has herself to blame.

Jim El Paso Tx.   May 15th, 2009 6:27 pm ET

With torture being such a hot potato I can see ALL of Congress trying to distance themselves from it. The Repukes as usual are trying to divert attention from the facts that no matter who knew what...Bush/Cheney made the decision to use it. It's on their heads now an I hope a court hands them their heads on a plate someday!

SLM   May 15th, 2009 6:27 pm ET

Liar, Too bad she continues to lie and dig herself into a deeper hole. She always has to blame Bush for everything. I supposed it is Bush's fault her face lift is too tight and she can't blink.

Anyone who can honestly say they support this proven liar needs a brain transplant. Maybe you can get a 2 for 1 deal with Pelosi.

Bob   May 15th, 2009 6:26 pm ET

For those of you who think Pelosi couldn't have stopped the waterboarding, you're drinking too much of the Pelosi Kool-Aid and you simply don't understand how things work. As Chairman all it would have taken (and all it's taken in the past) is a statement that she doesn't support what they're planning on doing, and it would NOT have happened. Period.

Those of you who think Pelosi is a great leader are absolutely as partisan as the most partisan and far right Republican, and just as brainwashed.

My favorite Nancy moment was a press conference on C-SPAN a couple of years ago when she basically called Republicans "evil"...all Republicans. The Press Corps were asking questions to egg her on, and in her ranting she didn't hear the reporters laughing at her as she was speaking. It was funny and sad at the same time...she just doesn't have much credibility any more.

joan k brand-landkamer   May 15th, 2009 6:26 pm ET

I am elderly but I believe my head is on straight!!!..I have never sent a comment good or bad in my whole life. BUT I have watched Newt Gingrich since the day he remarried and left his first wife with cancer in the hospital...... He is gambleng now to gain the control and be republican presidential candidate the next go around. I just shake my head about how strongly I can dislike a thoughtless power hungary man. who will do anything to succeed to his goal. Please don't be taken in by this really malevolent person. Mrs Pelosi, just hang in there, Mrs. Clinton had dificulties and is just tough enough to withstand many problems in her past. My prayers are for Obama and democrats with good hearts. Be tough, and know that there must be millions of women who don't comment but feel the way I do. joan

Ray Ray   May 15th, 2009 6:25 pm ET

Isn't it ironic??

Nancy has been a principal player in this witch-hunt over terrorist investigations, which has landed at her door-step.

I'd call that a successful witch-hunt. WE FOUND HER...

James   May 15th, 2009 6:24 pm ET

I love the liberal responses. They attack the intelligence of republicans and in the same breath they say that they want to stick to the issues. If Pelosi knew about the torture and did nothing then she is partly responsible. If she is responsible, then she can no longer hold the moral high ground. It is an issue and liberal double talk will not change that. She got burned by a fire she started and now she is trying to get out of it by being dishonest.

Bob   May 15th, 2009 6:22 pm ET

Guess what, Nancy? Use of the words "Bush Administration" will soon lose its effectiveness as a utility distraction. Right now, it's the quick, automatic response on every Dem's lips when they get called into question. But it's not going to wash much longer.

Nancy KNEW about the waterboarding, and all she had to do was to tell the CIA that she didn't support it, and they would have stopped it. That is well documented and it's happened in the past. But she didn't WANT to do that since at the time it would have been unpopular and it was getting information...for purely political reasons she decided not to say anything, and NOW she's trying to look like a hero.

Dems, I respect many of you but Nancy is as bad as the most partisan Republican. She simply does NOT have the interests of the U.S. at heart...Nancy cares about a) Nancy and b) skewering and heaping revenge upon, Republicans. She will continue to be a burden to you Dems as long as she is in office.

Steve, New York City   May 15th, 2009 6:20 pm ET

Just as Bush's idiotic "Axis of Evil" speech helped frighten Iranians into electing a far right-wing tyrant (Ahmedinijad (sp?)), Neo-con stupidity and excess also helped give rise to a "home-grown" knuckle-head from the far left: the brainless (loud-mouthed) Pelosi!

Blaming the Administration worked during the Bush years, but it doesn't work now Nancy. Sorry you didn't get the memo. All you know how to do is blame. Now its coming back at you when you get called out by an Obama appointee. Good luck blaming the most popular person in the world. Gingrich did you a favor, now all of your buddies are coming to your defense. Just don't criticize the Obama administration.

Bob in Pa   May 15th, 2009 6:12 pm ET

How she wanted that sentence to be interpreted
"What is important now is to be united in our commitment ..."
to crucify our enemies in the republican party.

No Incumbents 2010   May 15th, 2009 6:12 pm ET

You are missing the point here. The GOP wants you to focus more on who was aware, who approved of the waterboarding, who signed off on the use of waterboarding, who was involved in the decision...
Wait a minute.

Jerry   May 15th, 2009 6:12 pm ET

The Bush administration and the CIA mislead the Secretary of State and the American people to the tune of the Iraq war and we have trouble imagining that the agency would have a problem misleading a congressman? Maybe she is dishonest, but having swallowed the old WMD deception hook line and sinker, I think I'll refrain from passing judgment until the facts are out on this one. I only wish we had done so when they sold us the war.

Len   May 15th, 2009 6:08 pm ET

What difference does it make what Nancy Pelosi knew and when she knew it? Does it make what we did any more right? Does it somehow validate the policies of the Bush administration? Does it make Dick Cheney a nice man?

Please, America, show some smarts on this one. Don't be distracted by the lollipop.

ck   May 15th, 2009 6:07 pm ET

AHHHH.. NANCY!!

You finally got enough rope, and are hanging yourself.

She is a liar, a sponge and an idiot.

Please go away very soon Pelosi!

Pete D   May 15th, 2009 6:06 pm ET

Pelosi is just another dirty politician. She must be push out of the Congres right away. What a shamefull woman!

Barbara Independent in NY   May 15th, 2009 6:06 pm ET

OMG–Why is everyone buying into the Republican's trick of deflecting the responsibility for THEIR TORTURE POLICY onto someone that could not have stopped it? Unbelievable. We really have to do something about the educational system in this country. We have way too many stupid people and the Republicans know how to play them.

mike in portland   May 15th, 2009 6:03 pm ET

You guys are conveniently losing sight of the most important thing here, which is just what the right wants to happen. The focus needs to remain on the torture and those who spawned it. Anything else is a red herring.

sandee in Portland   May 15th, 2009 6:03 pm ET

How said that an elected representative of the people cannot own up to the fact that she made a mistake. I, for one, will not believe anything Ms. Pelosi says from this point forward. It takes a better person to admit they were wrong and obviously Ms. Pelosi isn't one of the better people. I would have much more respect for her if she would just own up to the fact that she made a mistake.

Once You Vote Black   May 15th, 2009 6:02 pm ET

Funny when the GOP is in the dumps they want "No Incumbents 2010". Nancy is telling the truth. The CIA is dedicated to lies and spys. Besides, if we have to forfit Nancy P in order to get Bush and Cheney to go to jail I would say off with her head. As long as those two spend the rest of their lives in jail. The best thing would be for the Dems to say get rid of Nancy P but jail Bush and Cheney. Then we could day see how fair we are.

Larry   May 15th, 2009 6:00 pm ET

BRAVO NANCY ...

Republicans HATE the TRUTH

The Party Of NO ... Honesty

Bob   May 15th, 2009 5:59 pm ET

NANCY PELOSI IS A GREAT LEADER.

Ms. Pelosi,

I have great respect for you and really appreciate the great work you are doing for our Country.

You need to put all these Wall Street Crooks and Scoundrels in Jail. All these Criminals will always hate you, don’t bother, just keep doing what you are doing.

You have my full support and the support of many Rational and Sensible people.

Republican Party is all done, they have an Insane leader Rush Limbaugh.

Obama Victim   May 15th, 2009 5:56 pm ET

Nancy says,

"My criticism of the manner in which the Bush Administration did not appropriately inform Congress is separate from my respect for those in the intelligence community who work to keep our country safe."

HUH????

So she is effectively saying... "someone from the CIA lied to me but I want to blame Bush"

KEEP TALKING NANCY!!

You are destroying what little moral high-ground you could have claimed on this issue. Dems have been calling for a "Truth Commission"... LOL... to be lead by Nancy the-liar Pelosi???

Proud Member..Party of No   May 15th, 2009 5:55 pm ET

Translation: "There's nothing to see here....let's just move along and forget that this ever happened and I didn't really mean it when I called all of the those dedicated men and women in the intelligence community a bunch of liars."

Sorry Nan, this ain't going away...........but you are.

No Incumbents 2010   May 15th, 2009 5:53 pm ET

"What is important now is to be united in our commitment to ensuring the security of our country; that, and how Congress exercises its oversight responsibilities, will continue to be my focus as we move forward."

And I must say that me not paying attention when I was clearly briefed was an oversight.

Denis   May 15th, 2009 5:51 pm ET

Nancy Pelosi has now been contradicted by two CIA chiefs, her own former staff member, and members of her own party. Her defense is that it was "not her job" to disagree with the briefings, because she had an election to win in the House. Excuse me…. her job is to represent her constituents, and members of the US House of Representatives as Speaker; and finally the people of the US as a member of the House Intellegence Committee. She has been exposed as purely a political hack and should be replaced as leader of the House of Representatives.
