PEOPLE: Bristol Palin graduates high school

Bristol Palin has graduated from high school.
Bristol Palin has graduated from high school.

Looking like a lot of her classmates – giddy and irreverent, wearing a silly necklace of Blow-Pop lollipops strung together with curly gift ribbon – Bristol Palin stepped toward the stage in Wasilla Sports Complex Thursday night to receive her high school diploma, more a worried mom than a jubilant teen.

"Where's my baby?" Bristol mouthed, searching the two front rows where her family sat until she finally spotted son Tripp near the backstage door, where Bristol's Aunt Heather was feeding the infant a bottle. With a wave to the little one she alternately calls "Handsome" and "My Guy," Bristol crossed the stage – and crossed "graduate high school" off her to-do list.

"I knew it would be hard work, but I knew I was going to do it," Bristol, 19, tells PEOPLE.

Congrats to Bristol, this is a notable achievement for someone with such handicaps as a teenage pregnancy and her own mother.
CNN How about focusing on other unwed mother teens who graduate from high school? Why does this one teen who talks about abstinence but does not practice it get the headlines?

No hate here, just flabbergasted why is this news? When Bristol tells her mom off and becomes a Democrat...now THAT'S news!

Don't become the hypocrite your mother has come to be.

there are 231 comments on this site. the fact that all of you read this article or the "ticker" means its newsworthy. even to the idiots on the site who trash CNN – if its not newsworthy, why did you read it?

  6. My Niece

Who cares! My niece had a baby at 16 – now a B.S.N for the last 8 years now is married with another child on the way and she's working on her masters. Please report on others who have not had the money like the Palin's.

My niece worked her butt off – and she is truly a success like many others who are not as crazy like the Palins

You cannot miss more than 20 days in a calendar school year and pass ANY class. Exceptions have definitely been made, trust me. I taught for several years and had students who were pregnant. No one graduated with the rest of the class if they were expecting during the year. This girl has done campaign tours, news tours, and photo spreads. Her diploma is a complete hoax and a buyout by her mother.

Good for her. I wish her and her son the best. Now can we please leave this girl alone?

sumbag obama worshippers like to pick on a girl when themselves prolly don't have jobs and are looking for a government handout and they themselves prolly don't have a education only trash is libs and dumbocrates

Can you even form a cohesive sentence? "Prolly" is not a word you embicile. I have three degrees, which could "probably" be evidenced slightly by the fact that I know how to write.

Why are so many liberals the most hateful and spiteful people, but say they want to help everyone? You are hating on an 18 year old girl because of who her mother is? Give me a break and grow up!

This is not news, CNN. Thousands of young people graduate high school every year, most without an out-of-wedlock child in tow, yet you don't report on them. Enough with the soap opera antics and hypocrisy of these snowbillies: the Palins' 15 minutes of fame was over a long time ago. Move on to cover important, real news.

Why is this newsworthy? Thousands of 17 and 18 year olds graduate EVERY year. Is it newsworthy because she's trying to tell people "do as I say, not as I do" when it comes to abstinance? Is it because she made the ridiculous mistake of having un-protected sex as a 16 yr old? Is it because her mom wants everyone to look at her daughter and say "Wow, she's just like her mom, a teen-age mother!"? Please, please, please. STOP COVERING THIS FAMILY! All you are doing is catering to her ego!

Good for Bristol. And since her mom is being paid MILLIONS for her "so called book" she has no excuse for not attending college and earning a Bachelor's degree. I'm so hoping she's brighter than her mother!!!

For all those who say this is "not news" then why do you read past the headline, and then take the time to comment? Why? because you are looking for any reason and opportunity to spew your liberal, hateful attacks on those who view the world differently than you do. Way to keep playing by the liberal playbook "Rules for Radicals" of course you have nothing better to do in life.

Good for her and all the other young mothers who graduate high school! Bristol is just one example of many young, single mothers who are walking a tough road so please support the girls in your area. Times have certainly changed. Back in the 70s, my high school had a smoking lounge. Now my daughters' high school has a nursery and doesn't allow smoking...

It's amazing that she thinks she is entitled to be an activist against teen pregnancy.
    Is this a joke?
Advocating for something that did not work for you?
Abstinence did not and will not work.
Wake up! We are in 2009!
The way to prevent teen pregnancy is talking about it.
    Too hard for some people.
They shouldn't be news, specially in a politics column.
