Obama drives a Ford hybrid - sort of

WASHINGTON (CNN) – It turns out President Obama puts his money where his mouth is when it comes to fuel-efficient automobiles.

At a Rose Garden event announcing a major deal that creates a new national fuel efficiency standard on Tuesday, the President decided to note what he has in the driveway back in the Windy City.

"By the way, I just want to mention, I think I still have my Ford parked in Chicago," the President said to laughter from the crowd, which included the chiefs of competing auto companies like General Motors, Chrysler and Toyota. "It's a Ford hybrid, it runs great, you guys should take a look."

He quickly covered his bases by adding: "But there are also some outstanding hybrids and energy-independent cars represented up here, so I didn't want to just advertise one."

The President's press secretary, Robert Gibbs, also advertised at his daily briefing Tuesday that he too drives a Ford Escape hybrid.

But unlike Gibbs, who drives his Ford to work, Obama of course doesn't get a chance to get behind the wheel anymore. "The Secret Service doesn't let him drive anymore, which I know he misses," Gibbs noted earlier this year.

It's a smart political move - to simultaneously tout the White House's ties to hybrids, and to American vehicles. Needless to say, Ford CEO Alan Mulally loves the high-level endorsements.

"We've been taking action to restructure ourselves for a number of years, and we also have been investing more in our products, so right now, many people say we have the best family of vehicles," a beaming Mulally told CNN in an interview at the White House.

I hope to see the day when my kids will tell their kids that they had to put gasoline in the cars to make them go... The kids will have to look up what gasoline is and wonder why such a product had to be used. I look forward to a day when there are battery powered vehicles of all sizes.

NO-Bama couldn't drive a thumb tack into a block of styrophome! You get what you vote for. Hybrid cars are proven to be more of a burden on the environment than normal ones. Too bad your Pres missed all the reports.

Well why don't Obama trade in his presidential limousine for his Ford hybrid to drive around in.

I would too if I could afford one. How about that for a stimulus package...give everyone the hybrid of thier choice...money gets into the economy and it helps the car makers and more hybrids will be out there meaning less gas will be used. Sounds like a win-win situation ;-)

Is the hybrid really the answer or a more complex problem? The hybrid cause as much enviromental damage just getting to the sales lot as driving a Hummer for 7 years....FACT. Nickel is mined in Canada, processed in China (still our earth environment) and is shipped again to this country. It took 30 years for the US to figure out disposal of spent nuclear fuel, how long will it take to figure how to dispose of these heavy metal batteries. You may have a band aid for the less gas but you still damage the environment. Stop looking for the easy answer and look at the big picture Obama.
