Thirty-eight percent of respondents in a new poll said that they approve of the job Harry Reid is doing in Congress.
Thirty-eight percent of respondents in a new poll said that they approve of the job Harry Reid is doing in Congress.

(CNN) – As the GOP struggles to find a candidate to challenge Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, a new poll out Tuesday suggests the Nevada Democrat is extremely vulnerable 18 months before Election Day.

According to the new survey conducted by Mason-Dixon for the Las Vegas Review-Journal, only about a third of the state's voters said they would vote to re-elect Reid to a fifth Senate term, while 45 percent said they would definitely vote for another candidate. An additional 17 percent of voters say they would consider voting to oust Reid.

The poll also suggested Reid's approval rating back home stands at a meager 38 percent, while about half of Nevada voters hold a negative view toward the Senate Majority leader.

Reid has long been a divisive figure in his home state, especially since ascending to the position of majority leader in 2006.

But even though there are few more valuable Democratic targets in the Senate, the GOP has yet to find a credible candidate willing to challenge Reid, known for his take-no-prisoners style back at home.

Meanwhile Reid is raising campaign cash at an impressive clip, amassing more than $2 million in his war chest during the first quarter of the year.

Jim Manley, a spokesman for Reid, brushed aside the poll results, saying, "Sen. Reid has never put a lot of weight in polls.

"Polls by the Review-Journal are consistently out of line with other polls," Manley also said. "The primary number he's worried about is Nevada's 10.4% unemployment rate and that's why he's focused on fixing the economy and creating jobs in Nevada."

The survey interviewed 625 Nevada voters and carries a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percent.

Dick Durbin WILL be the Senate Majority Leader because he earned it and he fits his party well.

James M. Holmes   May 19th, 2009 5:03 pm ET

Typical CNN... Bowing down to the ever dwindling GOP... This poll means nothing and it's source is more than suspect.

CNN, can you ever put the heat on Republicans or are you just too scared to be called "liberal media"?

That said, I do hope Ried loses the Dem primary so someone with a backbone would take on the GOP hate machine! Pelosi has more nads! He is a wimp!

But no worries, this seat will stay in Dem hands... The voters of Nevada know the GOP means nothing anymore but fear, hate, failure & selling out the American public so the rich get richer!

James W., Columbia, MO   May 19th, 2009 5:03 pm ET

Yeah...bad news though conservatives. If you had read the article you'd realize that it stated there was nobody credible to run against him. He may be replaced in the primary, but you'd still get a democrat. Plus, calm down folks, this is 18 months from now. Can we please catch our breaths for a second before jumping from election to election?

I guess it's just more empty rhetoric from the Republican "Oh my god the world is changing and I can't handle it!" Party.

Reed must go. And take Nancy Pelosi with him.

Reid is a long-standing fool – almost more gaffes than Biden, but mean-spirited. And a policy idiot.

Nevada – show that Western spirit. Toss him out on his ear!

Patricia   May 19th, 2009 4:30 pm ET

I, for one, hope Reid goes down in defeat. He's neither a Democrat or a Republican. He's in it for himself with loyalty to no one. He needs to go!

As a Yellow Dog Democrat of some forty years, I say good riddance.

Old "Weak" Reid couldn't lead his way out of a paper sack if the bottom were on fire and the opening aglow with neon lights.

Dump him in the primary and let a genuine progressive Democrat run in his place!

ANGIE IN PA   May 19th, 2009 4:30 pm ET

I've lived in Vegas for many years. The Review Journal has a political philosophy just to the right of Hitler. I take everything they say with more than a grain of salt. They have repeatedly been shown to distort news to fit their agenda. So, this story is hardly news at this point.

Get rid of Reid. I don't care if it is a Republican or Democrat who replaces him, I just think Reid supported a so-called stimulus bill that will borrow more money then ever in history against our children's future. He needs to go and we need fresh young people with less "baggage" and less partisanship and more ideas.

Mike from Ohio   May 19th, 2009 4:11 pm ET

I'm a strong Democratic supporter, and I believe that Sen. Reid is a strong-minded, capable and important Democratic leader. However, I have to agree with one of the recent comments that it is time for many incumbents, especially those that have been in Washington for over a quarter century... like Reid, to step back and allow the next generation of Americans to ascend to the high offices.

It is clear that the World is changing faster than the old ones can process... The first Congressman born in the 1980's is a Republican... the second will be a Democrat.

We're on our way up tweens.

john   May 19th, 2009 4:11 pm ET

This guy along with John Murtha and Pelosi need to go crawl back into their caves and be done with it. They succeeded in dividing the country. Their job was well done. To hell with what's good for the country. That doesn't matter. It's the DNC that only matters. Money...power...party. "take-no-prisoners style"

Huh? This guy folds whenever the Republicans say boo! Just once, I'd like to see him show some guts in the Senate – Make the Republicans filibuster, then make them pay the price in PR.

jim   May 19th, 2009 3:19 pm ET

I hope they dump Reid annd PELOSI.

John   May 19th, 2009 3:19 pm ET

Reid is not in trouble we have the power, people will realize if they want money and to work they will vote with the power. It is the GOP that is not just in trouble they are gasping for an ever decreasing amount of air. I say stand on their necks we don't need them.

Ridgeway   May 19th, 2009 3:19 pm ET

Gee, imagine that. His constituents have finally figured out the mean spirited old SOB hasn't done anything in years except gripe about Bush and the GOP. Only a gelding or a steer are less productive than him.

Reid can survive Republican challenges. But can he survive a challenge from a moderate Democrat?

Brad Morse   May 19th, 2009 3:17 pm ET

Some how this does not surprise me. I wonder what or who is next? The story just keeps getting more predictable.

callmeHarry   May 19th, 2009 3:15 pm ET

Well Harry, hope you enjoyed the ride, cause you are going to be exiting soon. Look at it this way my friend-someone else gets to kibbitz with that wonderful paragon of virtue Pelosi, who has proved to be a dim bulb. Good Luck Sir Harry, don't gamble it all away in Vegas.

Sari   May 19th, 2009 3:11 pm ET

I live in Vegas, and Manley is 100% correct about LVRJ polls. That entire paper is a neocon rag posing as journalism. They ask "pre-interview" questions to screen out the people who give answers they don't like, something I found out when they started to interview me last election and stopped prematurely without cause.

Few, if any of the people I have talked to in town have ever had a negative thing to say about Reid. I'm very proud to have him as my senator.

Tim   May 19th, 2009 3:11 pm ET

GOP is making a comeback...

Reid will lose, Dodd will lose, GOP will win governor in NJ and NY... all setting the stage to kick Obama out in 2012!

Tony   May 19th, 2009 3:09 pm ET

He's a scumbag, what do you expect? A squirrel on waterskis could beat Harry Reid at this point.

NYC REPUB   May 19th, 2009 3:09 pm ET

Once we're out of the recession, and Healthcare passes, Sen. Reid will be just fine.

Peter E   May 19th, 2009 3:08 pm ET

Reid and Pelosi should both have resigned after all the idiocy they've put us through. They've been running their respective chambers as if THEY have been elected president, and they are even becoming a liability to Obama and the democrats, not to mention the nation. Bye bye!

Justin   May 19th, 2009 3:08 pm ET

Thats not surprising. I wouldn't vote for him if I lived in Nevada and I'm a Democrat. Now if only we could find a suitable replacement for Pelosi we'd be in business. Those two will be the downfall of the Dem's hold on a majority in Congress.

Dennis   May 19th, 2009 3:06 pm ET

sandee in Portland   May 19th, 2009 2:58 pm ET

Too bad. This guy needs to go. He is the typical career politician. Term limits are badly needed for all political positions. Then they can't make a career out of a position that was meant to service the people's best interests and not their own. I don't care if a republican or a democrat beats him; he just needs to go! He's too old, too out of touch with the average american and has just been in politics too long.

Johnny DC   May 19th, 2009 2:57 pm ET

Small victories are better than no victories. Even as a Conservative, I'll take any random Democrat over Reid in a heartbeat. The guy represents everything wrong with politics, on top of the fact that I disagree with most of his stances. I'll gladly take a morally capable replacement (that I equally disagree with) any day.

I'm not worried. The republican party has done enough damage to last us a few voting cycles before they amp up the religious base and have a chance at winning again.

Maybe this time they'll be a little more conservative than the big government that presided during the Bush administration. One can only hope this to be the case the next time they're given a chance to lead.

I live in Las Vegas and have to say Harry Reid isn't even a blip on my radar... Now the Governor Jim Gibbons on the other hand.... talk about someone that needs to be booted... his poll numbers are as bad and he is Republican... We have a crisis of leadership here. Although, I am more than a little suspect of numbers that come from a poll of 625 voters compared to the entire state population, and with such a small nimber why in the world is there a 4% margin of error??

Rose   May 19th, 2009 2:38 pm ET

I hope Nevada wakes up and gets rid of this guy. He is without a doubt the worse Senate leader in my time and I have been around for 73 years. Please, find a decent opponent for the state of Nevada.

CJ   May 19th, 2009 2:35 pm ET

We all better stayed focus on trying to clean up the mess that the GOP got us in the first place. If we were to use the same rationale that they are using against Pelosi, then we must also conclude that they all were well aware of everything the past administration did. That means they too should be viewed as accomplices. After all, the majority voted for the war in Iraq, and certainly, those in power in the GOP would never lie!!

Brad   May 19th, 2009 2:35 pm ET

I am a Democrat and I just don't picture of him as an effective leader with any real clout.

joe   May 19th, 2009 2:34 pm ET

Maybe the GOP could dig up the body of Joe McCarthy and have him cloned?

Cindy PA   May 19th, 2009 2:32 pm ET

In 2010 when we have 20+ percent unemployment, 20+ percent interest rates on mortgages, 0 percent on earnings, the GOP will tie the $838 billion stimulus bill onto Harry Reid, the Democratic Party in Congress and the community organizer / social worker president that has no clue and is incompetent. The GOP will take back Congress and once again have to rescue the American public from government.

kevinmc3   May 19th, 2009 2:32 pm ET

This says "voters are NOT stupid". Reid is among the most hostile, anti-productive and politically self serving politicians of the elite left. Seems his only purpose, to denounce and degrade everything that came out of the Bush White House is no longer of much value. Time ot move over, trash the "Michael Moore" mentality, and actually hire another Senator that will MAYBE put the country first , just MAYBE, but with Reid there is NO CHANCE.

Democrat no more   May 19th, 2009 2:31 pm ET

I hope the people of Nevada see their way to oust this guy from office. I think they would be way ahead with new representation.

4 and The Door   May 19th, 2009 2:29 pm ET

It looks like more and more voters are realizing that the Democratic plan beyond their anti-Bush rhetoric is empty. The Stimulus Bill and Wall Street and Automaker bailouts are turning out to be more problems than the solutions they were claimed to be. Sorry Senator Reid, but eventually voters really do expect results.

Ron in Asheville, NC   May 19th, 2009 2:29 pm ET

Here's somebody from the other side of the country who thinks both Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi are just what the country needs. I voted for Obama, but I suspect that by 2012 I'll be tired of the middle of the road. As John Hightower once said, "Ain't nothin' in the middle of the road but white lines and dead armadillos,' and I'd rather we stayed alive. Go get'm, Harry!

If Democrats want to continue their dominance in both houses, they need to give the boot to both Reid and Pelosi. These two "leaders" have done nothing but spew vitriol and play politics since taking over. The DNC should listen to their leader (the President) and leave the old Washington way of doing things behind. Harry Reid is a despicable excuse for a Senator and doesn't deserve his seat.

Donnygull   May 19th, 2009 2:21 pm ET

I really could care less whether Reid is re-elected or not. I have been disappointed by him more times than not as he needs to fight fire with fire against the Republicants. I say elect a young LIBERAL firebrand to take it to the thugs.

Glenn Martin   May 19th, 2009 2:19 pm ET

Reid has cost this country more than anyone other than Nancy Pelosi. The two own a steamroller Stimulus bill that is little more than social re-engineering, It is estimated 20% of $767B goes toward job creation. In the first 100 days of Obama he has approved in bailouts, budget increase and Stimulus more than all combined previous administrations back to George Washington. Unbelievable!

Mike   May 19th, 2009 2:18 pm ET

Ron - Saint Louis   May 19th, 2009 2:16 pm ET

I'm a democrat but wouldn't shed a tear of Harry and Nancy both lost their offices. They have done little to follow President Obama's new era of politics in Washington. Time to clean out the old guard and put in fresh people that are working for the will of the people, not the party or their pocket books.

Out with the old and in with the new. Harry Reid right now is owned by Washington and big business just like the Republicans. We need a majority leader in Washington who works for the people of this nation. The list is also topped by Pelosi and Dodd. I'm a liberal and I'm telling these 3 are jokes. Pelosi is lying through her teeth. Dodd writes in a clause to allow big bonuses to AIG execs. If only we had 26 other Obamas out there running for senate in 2010.

Considering Obama attacked Nevada – desparaging any Companies going to Las Vegas for business trips..... the good people of NV need to send a message back to Congress:

Don't Mess with Vegas, baby!

Larry of Las Vegas   May 19th, 2009 2:10 pm ET

Ole Harry can get out of town by taking that high speed $8 billion train he wants to build to Los Angeles. Nevada is ready for a Republican with conservative values and not the tax and spend socialistic agenda being promoted by Obama. Republicans cannot wait for the mid term elections so we can get this country's economy back on track.... and not Harry's high speed tracks.

JJ in Chula Vista, CA   May 19th, 2009 2:10 pm ET

Fresh off Michael Steele's Republican manifesto, I'm certain the Republicans will "have answers" to these sorts of questions very soon, and the people of Nevada will have to choose their own path. The question becomes, will they pick someone who's yet another "loyal opposer" to the president, or will the representative they want have something "new to say, have new ideas" and not look to the past and apologize for the past Republican mistakes?

As a Democrat, I seriously doubt this will be the case.

Fair is Fair   May 19th, 2009 2:09 pm ET

2010 might just turn out to be a good year after all. Good people of Nevada... PLEASE get rid of this sorry excuse for a senator.

gary davis Harbor Oregon   May 19th, 2009 2:09 pm ET

so its over a year away for harry reid to either get voted out or get re-elected .. give me a break . alot will happen in the next eighteen months .I am hoping our country will be on its way to a recovery from the Bush Cheney crap shoot ..so as for this man having trouble getting re-elected isn't even news worthy

the media needs to focus on the here and now and we are all waiting to see the GOP shoot themselves in the foot once again. soon they will be only a bad dream and our nation will come together and get back on track as to being a nation of truth and justice and freedom for everyone.

JT   May 19th, 2009 2:06 pm ET

It will truly be a good day for America when Reid, Pelosi, and the rest of the Dem crooks are voted out/lose control of Congress. Then REAL change can happen and America can truly start to recover.

Dutch/Bad Newz,VA   May 19th, 2009 2:04 pm ET

Nevada may vote Reid out, but they sure as hell better put a democrat in that seat to replace him.

Greg from MA   May 19th, 2009 2:02 pm ET

Where is the reporting? If Jim Manley says that "Polls by the Review-Journal are consistently out of line with other polls", you, CNN, as a news organization need to do the research and point out that this is correct or incorrect.

While I personally like Reid, your reporters need to be held to a higher standard CNN.

Becky   May 19th, 2009 1:57 pm ET

I'm fine if Reid and Pelosi go. Both parties have room to grow right now.

Mississippi Mike   May 19th, 2009 1:52 pm ET
