U.S. sending $100 million to help displaced Pakistanis

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton today announced $100 million in aid to Pakistan.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton today announced $100 million in aid to Pakistan.

WASHINGTON (CNN) - The United States is sending $100 million in aid to Pakistan to help alleviate the plight of an estimated 2 million people displaced by recent fighting against Taliban extremists, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced Tuesday.

The money comes on top of $60 million in assistance already provided by the United States to Pakistan since last August.

The assistance is "essential to the global security and security of the United States," Clinton said in a White House briefing. Much of the aid will be directed toward the purchase of Pakistani grain as part of a larger "investment in the people and economy in Pakistan."

The Pakistani government is helping to lead the fight against extremists threatening "our collective security" and therefore deserves to be supported, she argued.

Clinton called on individual Americans to support the relief effort in the form of $5 donations by texting the word "SWAT" to the number 20222.

Much of the recent fighting has been centered in and around Pakistan's Swat Valley.

The aid could begin arriving in Pakistan this week if Islamabad grants permission for the C-17 flights, U.S. defense officials said earlier Tuesday.

The aircraft will carry food, water, water trucks and air-conditioned tents, the officials said.

Planning has been under way for several days, but Pakistani officials are sensitive to U.S. military presence in their country, the officials added.

Pakistan's military has waged a massive operation against Taliban militants in the country's northwest region. Pakistanis are fleeing the ongoing fighting in "the biggest and fastest exodus that we have seen in recent years," United Nations refugee agency spokesman Ron Redmond said.

Nearly 1.5 million Pakistanis have registered as displaced since May 2 - a rate of about 85,000 people fleeing a day - Redmond said. The total number is equivalent to the population of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

A new administration comes in and finally gets the message across to the Pakistanis that they have to fight. I'm glad they're starting to realize how dangerous the threat is.

Do we have an extra $100 million? Our money printer should be out of ink by now. This administration sure likes to spend money it doesn't have. Higher taxes in our future, way higher!

makes sense, you don't want refugees becoming Taliban. Plus, U.S. spies can recruit refugees to snoop on the enemy.

Please, Please can Ameica get out of these country and take care of its own citizen for once. I really don't know where the politican been for the last eight to nine years, but this country is dying a real fast death thanks to the Republican and the Democarats. Each one of these party have destroy this country. Now, I have no problem helping other in this country or around the world, but if my roof in my house is falling down how can I repair house and let me be destroy. That is what they are doing. Sending 100 million to another country to help its people is a noble idea, but help the 100 million people in this courntry first. People can find jobs, can put food on their tables, can pay the bills, can't pay for the child education, or their family medical bills, yet we have money to take care of someone eles house. When will the politican take care of home first and foremost,.

Obama is doing to the US what Osama Bin Laden only dreamed about. He is destroying our country through reckless spending.

Why are we not purchasing American grain to ship to Pakistan. I have never understood the idea of paying subsidies to farmers not to grow crops, and then paying other countires to purchase supplies to provide them aide. Why don't we just let the farmers grow as much as they want and the government will purchase the excess to help famine stricken and war-torn countires. Or does this make too much sense?

My other thought is – if Pakistan can support a nuclear weapons program, why do they need $100m from the US for food? There are plenty of homeless shelters and food pantries that could use that help.

Thanks for giving my money to people that hate me. Maybe if we stopped meddling in the middle east they'd kill each other off and we wouldn't have to deal with them anymore.

Text SWAT, what a great use of technology! Next April 15, we'll simply need to text "Fleeced" to a 1-800 number and your taxes will be taken care of.

So let help me understand this, they want our aid but have a problem with our presence? So are we just to give 100 million to the Paki's to line the pockets of their elite, with barely a dime ever reaching the people who needs it? I say eff 'em, let them kill each other off. Here we are again tryin gto save a bunch of ungrateful basstards again, just like in Iraq. Let them fix thier own problems. They have a Military .......oh I forget, they are too worried about thier manufactured cold war with India. They are not sending their full might of their military to the north because they are so much in bed with the Taliban, so they send a few thoudsand troops up there to make it seem like they are actually doing something so we wont completely cut them off. I know the moderator will not let this get posted but htat's okay, he or she can read the truth.

I find it deplorable that we continue to send money overseas to help crooked governments and the leaders continuing to spend our money with no say whatsoever from the people.

These countries continue to take our money while some are the richest from oil proceeds. I would like to know why we are sending money to Pakistan when the leaders of that country are harboring Al Queda and Osama Bin Laden?

when do we stop helping other countries and begin taking care of our own?

  17. Buying friends

Obama has taken out the Democratic playbook of old - buy your friends. But, as soon as the US dollars stop flowing freely to Pakistan, they will turn on us. When will we learn?

I love how the Obama administration just dolls out the money to every single place on this earth as if it grows on trees. I am glad to see that the hard working taxpayers have to sacrifice, but not Obama and the Federal government! Why not give 500Billion? Why stop at 100M? Its Monopoly money to this administration! We know that they don't pay taxes anyway! Only the suckers like myself pay taxes!

Do not question the great one! He is all knowing, all seeing, all spending.

Obama will tell you when it is time to worry... such as the overwhelming fear we should have about swine-flu... having killed 6 people in the US!!!

  23. Mercenaries in Pakistan

The Pakistanis are not fighting because they like us or because they see the same threat that the US does. They fight (or put up the appearance of fighting) because we pay them ungold sums. They are temporary mercenaries for us until the money runs out. And 70% of the current aid will never get to the refugees; it will go to the Pakistani big whigs in power

This approach will NOT solve the problem, only delay it a short while

It seems that we have reached a milestone in Washington politics when the Puppeteers visit the Puppets. This should be a beautiful bipartisan symphony, orchestrated by the MassMedia (2s&3s) string section. We can rest all rest assured that the next 100 days, should be well scripted display of “double think” and political “innuendo” for domestic consumption. Should be a good laugh when all the strings get tangled, and reality sets in,and when the population finally figures out what we are really headed for.
