U.S. sending $100 million to help displaced Pakistanis

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton today announced $100 million in aid to Pakistan.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton today announced $100 million in aid to Pakistan.

WASHINGTON (CNN) - The United States is sending $100 million in aid to Pakistan to help alleviate the plight of an estimated 2 million people displaced by recent fighting against Taliban extremists, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced Tuesday.

The money comes on top of $60 million in assistance already provided by the United States to Pakistan since last August.

The assistance is "essential to the global security and security of the United States," Clinton said in a White House briefing. Much of the aid will be directed toward the purchase of Pakistani grain as part of a larger "investment in the people and economy in Pakistan."

The Pakistani government is helping to lead the fight against extremists threatening "our collective security" and therefore deserves to be supported, she argued.

Clinton called on individual Americans to support the relief effort in the form of $5 donations by texting the word "SWAT" to the number 20222.

Much of the recent fighting has been centered in and around Pakistan's Swat Valley.

The aid could begin arriving in Pakistan this week if Islamabad grants permission for the C-17 flights, U.S. defense officials said earlier Tuesday.

The aircraft will carry food, water, water trucks and air-conditioned tents, the officials said.

Planning has been under way for several days, but Pakistani officials are sensitive to U.S. military presence in their country, the officials added.

Pakistan's military has waged a massive operation against Taliban militants in the country's northwest region. Pakistanis are fleeing the ongoing fighting in "the biggest and fastest exodus that we have seen in recent years," United Nations refugee agency spokesman Ron Redmond said.

Nearly 1.5 million Pakistanis have registered as displaced since May 2 - a rate of about 85,000 people fleeing a day - Redmond said. The total number is equivalent to the population of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

New concept now we pay the terrorist to kill us!!
    Interesting policy???????
I think many Americans can use the money here in the US to survive without killing anyone.

By the way has Hillary paid back the money she owed or was she part of the bailout??????

Man oh man... $100 Million would buy a lot of supplies for the food banks and soup kitchens that have bare shelves.

When is the U.S. money train going to stop going overseas and stay here in the U.S. for American citizens! How much further can these politicians push the American people. We must keep the money here for American citizens and stop the wasteful spending in Washington!

I think it's a great plan. Just think if we would have spent billions on helping the Middle East rather than bombing the crap out of it.....maybe things would be better.

Guess you guys missed this part:
"The money comes on top of $60 million in assistance already provided by the United States to Pakistan since last August. "
That would be the last administration.

But I digress. I am not for sending aid to foreign countries at all. Least of all right now. And I really hate the fact that this is due to years of our butting in where we didn't belong. at some point, we have got to leave these people to their own devices. However, there is the issue of REAL WMD in Pakistan. Helping them to stabilize the country is kinda in our best interests, isn't it?

Oh please....where were all you naysayers when Bush/Cheney approved trillions to rebuild Iraq and then we were BUYING their oil. The Iraqi gov't had an $11 Billion surplus and Bush said they still needed our money? How about when Reagan funded Bin Laden in Afghanistan? Can you say Iran-Contra? I'm not agreeing with sending millions overseas but those of you who think this is a Dem problem have your heads in Rush's drug addicted butt.

typical liberals...hate America and what she stands for...and support this hatred by funding the adversaries trying to destroy us...

I know, why doesn't Obama just fly over tens of thousands of families, confiscate the foreclosed homes, and give them to the refugees? In fact, he could also give them a car since he's head of Government Motors, he can supply a "Safe-Link" cell phone so they could either call home or make an IED...and finally.....sign them up for free health care! Hell, I'll pay for it all! It's on me!

Will somebody please take that checkbook away from Hillary! This is just more of OUR taxes going down the drain. If the Pakistanis needs a handout than let their good friends the Saudis bail them out. Though of course the Saudis are busy funding the Taliban

Money for every other country on earth, none for our own citizens. You are an Iraqi refugee, and you want to start a business? Ok, here's money. You're a US citizen in New Orleans, you lost your house in a flood. **** you. You get nothing,.

Aid to Pakistan and other 3rd World Countries.

As the saying goes, “Freedoms of Today, become the Rights of Tomorrow”.

We give them Aid today, they will claim it as a Right Tomorrow.

And if we stop the Aid Tomorrow they will become our Enemies.

This makes me sick. 100 million to help a terrorist country by no money to close Gitmo. I want to vomit. Montana just said they are willing to take 100 detainees. Dems are just like Pubs, they eat their own. President Obama should tell them to stick it where the sun don't shine.

This money is going to feed, clothe, and resettle displaced refugees. We are Americans, not terrorists, not dictators, and not totally without conscience. We are engaged in a war. Wars are only a little bit about troops and shooting, parades and "glory."

Wars are mostly collateral damage: orphaned children, raped women, men without legs, babies with no mother and not enough food, five year old kids eating out of trash cans in the alley, destroyed infrastructure, people without a home or a bed, children who have never been to school, sick people with no access to medicine, diabetics with no insulin, infected eyes with no access to antibiotics, maimed people, women who sleep with dirty men in exchange for a can of milk for their babies, men who are watching their wives and babis get scrawnier and scrawnier day after day without enough food, and the families of our allies who are fighting beside our soldiers.

When the US engages in a war, after every possible effort to avoid it, we take responsibility for the military situation AND for the collateral damage that inevitably accompanies war. Those who think otherwise should move to another nation. I suggest Russia or Iran.

We have to think about ourselves first! What about our roads, schools, hospitals, etc??????

What Iowa could do with 100 million dollars!

I have always been against sending needless aid to countries when we are the ones who are grasping for straws in the "Land of the Free".

Hillary will do an excellent job in helping pakistan.get its ducks in a row.. and it has nothing to do with either party .its about stopping all bad people in the world threaten and harm anyone on the planet
its also about a small group of small minded small endowed bottom feeders that don't want to loose control over their owning women and treating them like slaves and making themselves look and act like gods

so having Hillary be involved is great .kind of a slap in there face

    go get them Hillary 🙂

It is now costing U.S. taxpayers $100 million to repair what the Pakistani government should have done in the first place, which was to fight the Taliban as soon as they started crossing into their borders. The Pakistani's offered land and peace to the devil and expected a Utopian society to come to fruition and populated by militant islamic extremist. Guess they now know what we have been telling them for the last 8 years and what they should have known even before that when the Taliban stilled controlled Afghanistan and blew up the 1,700 year old statue of Buddha, harbored Al-Quaida and helped facilitate the murder of 2,000 Americans on 9/11. Bush gave the Pakistani's billions of dollars. What happened to that money. The Pakistani government now knows how to blackmail money from the United States the way North Korea does.

I suppose we could just leave them alone and let the Taliban grab control of their Nuclear Arsenal and launch it eh?

American should STOP giving money to the terrorist Pakistan. Once the money dries, Pakistan knows that it will be "cut to size" by India and there is a possibility for them to reform. Now that they know that they will get millions often and billions once in a while from America, they know how to prolong this idiocy for long... hell, who doesn't want free money?
