From

(CNN) – Newt Gingrich is calling on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to resign her leadership post Tuesday, days after deriding the California Democrat as a "trivial politician" over her description of what the CIA has told her about aggressive government interrogation techniques.

In a column for the conservative publication Human Events, the former House Speaker takes aim at Pelosi's press conference last week, during which she said the CIA did not tell her in 2002 that it used the aggressive interrogation technique of waterboarding. She went on to allege the CIA routinely misleads Congress.

"She charged that the CIA, deliberately and as a matter of policy, violated the law by lying to Congress," Gingrich writes in the column. "And with that allegation, Speaker Pelosi disqualified herself from the office she holds."

"Speaker Pelosi has damaged America's safety," Gingrich also writes. "She's made America less secure by sending a signal to the men and women defending our country that they can't count on their leaders to defend them."

In an interview on ABC Wednesday, Gingrich elaborated on his comments, saying CIA agents aren't likely to trust Pelosi with sensitive information going forward given her allegation.

"If you were a CIA agent today and you were told to brief Nancy Pelosi, how could you have any sense of confidence in telling her anything?" Gingrich said.

A Democratic leadership aide Wednesday called Gingrich's comments a "political ploy."

"This is an ethically challenged former Speaker of the House who is out to sell books," the aide said.

Congressional Democrats on Tuesday also appeared to rally behind Pelosi, with her No. 2, Maryland Rep. Steny Hoyer, saying he believes the speaker is being truthful in her statements about 7-year-old briefings.

"Republicans are going to stay on it as long as you guys keep printing it, as long as it continues to be a television item – not about the substance, but about the distraction," Hoyer told reporters Wednesday. "As long as you want to feed on it, the Republicans will continue to feed you."

Meanwhile, one of Pelosi's closest allies in the House, Connecticut Democrat John Larson, acknowledged to CNN that the Speaker's news conference last week could have been better, but insisted there hasn't been any fallout among Democrats.

"Perhaps it wasn't one of her best press conferences. But certainly everyone in this caucus stands behind her to be the lead in our caucus. I don't know if it could have been done better or not, but our caucus is entirely behind her," he said.

Haven't heard anything from Pelosi lately, have we? No proof, Nancy? Or is it that you were lying? That proves to me that she was lying. IF she had been telling the truth, she would have defended herself. Buh-bye Nancy.

It's nice to see that someone can't have an opinion without being belittled and namecalled in this country anymore. Instead of focusing on the idea that maybe Speaker Pelosi lied, most of the comments here are focused on bashing Newt. Why is it that so many people on the left use such vehement and hateful language with regards to anyone on the right.

You have for years now attempted to degrade people and insult people at a personal level who have different opinions than you. I'm not saying that there aren't people on the right who don't, but most of their anger comes out in reflection of different policy positions or ideas than personal attacks. Why so much viciousness? Can't we have civil debate anymore?

CS from VA   May 20th, 2009 11:51 am ET

Regardless of which side of this fence you stand, you cannot deride someone for being dishonest without knowing all the facts surrounding the issue.

Whether Pelosi trashes the CIA, or Gingrich trashes Pelosi, it's all just so much "showboating" without the facts being brought into the light of day.

Therefore, it's time to set aside the name-calling and declassify the evidence for all to see.

Kate   May 20th, 2009 11:51 am ET

Republicans are just mad because everyone is blaming people from their party for the entire situation. They're looking for a democrat to pull into this mess as if to say, "See, look! It wasn't just us, the dems knew about it too."

Louis Marchese   May 20th, 2009 11:50 am ET

What is Newt asking? He want Ms Pelosi to quit because he feels that the CIA does not lie. I am also sure that he believes that they do not destroy evidence when instructed not to. I guess Mr. G does not know how to recognize a lie when he hears one , because of his ability to do the same. In is Contract on America , he was very honest and aboveboard is his proposals and has NEVER lied in his Professional or Personal life

Sean   May 20th, 2009 11:50 am ET

This is a non-issue that Republicans are manufacturing to win a news cycle and hopefully take down a formidable adversary. It's disgusting that you continue to print every filthy word that comes out of that has-been hate mongerer Newt Gingrich's mouth. You want someone to resign? How about whoever keeps accepting this as a newsworthy story steps down so we can focus on real issues again. And while we're at it, Newt Gingrich should consider retiring from life.

American for Truth   May 20th, 2009 11:50 am ET

OK if thats true, then please tell Bill Clinton and John Edwards to keep their mouths shut. I'm still confused about what the definition of "is" is.

opus512   May 20th, 2009 11:50 am ET

Gingrich is an idiot, a disgraced idiot that's not even in office and holds no position of authority in anything. Anything.

Every time CNN quotes Newt Gingrich, God kills a kitten.

Think about it.

Chipster   May 20th, 2009 11:50 am ET

I think it's time for Gingrich to check the facts before opening his mouth. It turns out that the CIA has a stack of inaccurate reports about who attended meetings and when. They even reported that "Congressman" Porter Goss attended a meeting that, not only did he not attend, but he was no longer a Congressman - why? Because Porter Goss was the CIA Director at the time!!!

Will the CIA apologize to Pelosi? Will Gingrich?

If Nancy Pelosi does not resign, she will bring down the Democrat House of Cards like a stiff wind with her in 2010.

So stick around, Speaker Pelosi! I'm looking forward to the next elections. 2010 and 2012! We'll put a stop to this runaway porked out beloated debt-up-to-our-ears liberal social agenda pushing government very quickly. We have to...we owe it to the next generations of Americans.

Carl   May 20th, 2009 11:50 am ET

Why does anyone care what this washed-up has been says? Just for once Democrats need to ignore the bleating from the extreme right and remind the public that lying, torture and anti-Constitutional legislation are things the Democrats have rescued our nation from. The last thing we need to do is listen to the ex-leader of a corrupt and arrogant past.

Investigate all and jail those who broke international or domesticate law and force those out of the government, whether Democrates or Republicans, who acted inappropriately, but don't single out a Democrate to pay for Republican crimes to score some political points.

Barbara   May 20th, 2009 11:47 am ET

Desperate Newt! Judging from your background I don't think you have any moral platform to shout from. Let this issue work its way out-You are far from anyone to cast stones without knowing all the FACTS. Better forucs on that party of yours falling away.

Jeff   May 20th, 2009 11:47 am ET

I for one do not care if she knew about in 2002 or not. If so, and, if applicable she should have her day in "court" or "hearings" just like everyone else. I suspect though even if she did know about it she was in no position to do anything about it. What, inform the media? What, leak top secret matters to others? If she knew and dissented and/ or sought legal recourse the Bush administration would have squashed her like a bug. There's the real crime here...go away Gingrich.

Greg   May 20th, 2009 11:47 am ET

Newt might be shooting himself in the foot if Nancy Pelosi resigns. A new House Speaker could be chosen that isn't as polarizing, and one that the Republicans can't use to put money in their coffers.

When the Democrats were on the outs, you'd never see Michael Dukakis, Bill Bradley, Al Gore or even Bill Clinton going on the talk show circuit telling Tom DeLay to resign. You'd never see them at all.

Also, you would rarely see current Democrats on the air!

Newt and Dick Cheney must be systematically ignored.

I love it when these old republicans open their mouths because as Much as Pelosi irritates some, whenever an old grey haired republican who is not even relevant opens his mouth, it turns people off even more. Keep talking Newt.. thats why the base of the republican party is so pathetic,

gt   May 20th, 2009 11:43 am ET

Pelosi should resign, not only for this issue, but for pure incompetence. She is truly everything that is wrong with Congress. Typical blame game. The CIA does things that most Americans do not want to know about, that's what makes them effective. Also, she should maybe spend a little time in CA trying to help figure out how they are going to close a $21 Billion gap next year.

For Gingrich to say that Pelosi has betrayed the trust of the CIA is ludicrous. The CIA is answerable to Congress, which has been one of the problems under previous administrations. Congress gave up their oversight responsibilities and many things got out of hand. Perhaps America should not trust Gingrich because of his past actions. the ones that lost him his job in Congress.

Jake   May 20th, 2009 11:40 am ET

Newt is right – she does not belong in a position of leadership – this is only one more in a long list of underachievements.
What a disgrace.

Pelosi has damaged the confidence of the American people as far as the CIA is concerned. She has maligned without proof a vital arm of intelligence in this country. She should resign, or the spinless democrats should strip her of her power. Any member of Congress who would malign the CIA without proof should step down now.

The lizard is sounding more stupid every day.

erin- mn   May 20th, 2009 11:38 am ET

So any time someone questions the moves our government makes, they should resign? I thought that was what democracy was all about. Why is it that our government expects us, the american people, to just blindly follow and accept everything they do or say? And seriously, who is newt Gingrich to question anyone else on anything?

Dave   May 20th, 2009 11:38 am ET

This hypocritical idiot calls on Pelosi to resign; yet Bush and Cheney – the people who really responsible for what happened – are above his criticism. Fine. If Pelosi goes, Bush and Cheney should stand trial for war crimes and let the chips fall where they may.

Carl   May 20th, 2009 11:38 am ET

Gingrich is CORRECT.Pelosi needs to GO,PEROID.IT DOESN'T MATTER WHERE , just GO!!

BeefMasterX   May 20th, 2009 11:38 am ET

Tell her to resign COMPLETELY–we don't need her in Congress AT ALL! You go, Newt!!

Mike   May 20th, 2009 11:37 am ET

Oh, more divisive politics from the right then. Well, at least they are consistent.

Hey Newt, how about you pick up what's left of your party and put yourself out with the rest of the garbage?

Royster   May 20th, 2009 11:37 am ET

WHO CARES with Newt says?

This guy is hypocrisy personified!
While he was pushing for Bill Clinton to be impeached he was having an AFFAIR and left his sick wife in bed. This is the voice of the GOP??

grannybush   May 20th, 2009 11:37 am ET

I think this is the most interesting part of the article: Hoyer told reporters Wednesday. "As long as you want to feed on it, the Republicans will continue to feed you." In other words, media, who's side are you on, anyway. You're supposed to be on the dem's side so stop reporting this.

Tom Blanchard   May 20th, 2009 11:37 am ET

Newt G is a joke and should keep his mouth shut. Cheney ran rough shot over the CIA for years, forcing them to compromise their ethics – it should be no suprise that they be charged with misleading Congress. Newt should stop grand standing.

jeff   May 20th, 2009 11:37 am ET

I can't stand Pelosi, but she is still relavent, so at least can understand why she is in the news... Please explain why is Gingrich in the news?

Accountability   May 20th, 2009 11:37 am ET

Bay of Pigs
Bombing of Cambodia
Revolutions in Latin America
Iran/Contra

For a self proclaimed historian, Newt has a short memory

Newt, please go away and take Cheney with you.

Why didn't he ever call on Bush or Cheney to resign? Republicans are a sad lot. Pelosi is doing a good job.

Herk   May 20th, 2009 11:35 am ET

Newt Gingrich is one of the gang that brought us into the mess we are in, an imperialist of the first order. I am a firm believer in freedom of speech but he should be treated as a simpleminded citizen and not given news space. He should be tared and feathered rather than given any credit on CNN.

Sniffit   May 20th, 2009 11:35 am ET

Hint to GOP: you're only pandering to the already-convinced-to-vote-for-you crowd...the distraction effort is doing you more damage with the rest of us.

A womanizer asking for a politician to resign. I wonder who is worst!

Ivan Schiff   May 20th, 2009 11:35 am ET

What really is behind these attacks on Pelosi is that instead of using an euphenism for lies she had the audacity to call the CIA liars.

Gina, California   May 20th, 2009 11:34 am ET

She should have resigned since last year!

CTardy   May 20th, 2009 11:34 am ET

Newt Gingrich and the rest of the Republicans will do anything to keep the spotlight off of what they have done. Bottom line Bush and the Republicans party started all of this mess. Whether Pelosi knew about it or not, Bush, Cheneny, etc. they knew it was torture and probably did whatever it took to have the CIA justify that it was torture.

I Am The Great And Powerful Rush Of Oz   May 20th, 2009 11:34 am ET

April 2002: Cheney orders torture of detainees to prove link between sadaam and bin laden.

August 2002: CIA "contractors" continue policy of torture for political reasons under orders from Bush/Cheney administration.

September 2002: The CIA a) Tells Pelosi or b) Doesn't tell Pelosi

May, 2009: right wing screams for Pelosi's head.

Hello? Buehler? Does the far right really think we are that stupid?

Samuel   May 20th, 2009 11:34 am ET

It's funny. One disgraced politician asking another to resign. Especially one that presided on beginning of policies that has brought this country to complete destruction. Newt and Phil Gramm should go move to Haiti or something where they can pillage the poor in the name of capitalism.

Dave in Albuquerque   May 20th, 2009 11:34 am ET

If Newt Gingrich doesn't make outrageous statements, he doesn't get media coverage any more. It's that simple.

BalackObama   May 20th, 2009 11:34 am ET

Hey kids!!!

It's comical to see these republican conservatives squirm... they have no platform, except saying no to evrery proposed solution offered to clean up the mess they created. Here's an idea... mass suicide... that'll show that mean ol' Pelosi... Balack out !

Darth Vadik, CA   May 20th, 2009 11:34 am ET

This from a disgraced politician, man, father and husband...

...the right wing are trully wacos.

Tom in Sarasota   May 20th, 2009 11:34 am ET

Funny to hear the Republicans pretending to care about the CIA, after their leader, Dick Chaney, ratted out that CIA agent whose husband refused to spread his lies about the WMD. That was a felony, and he got some flunky to take the fall for him. It's no surprise that Republicans don't believe in the rule of law, since they're constantly breaking them.

Terise. TN   May 20th, 2009 11:33 am ET

I don't understand who is Newt Gingrich . What title or important postion does he hold. Is he not a private citizen like the rest of us.

All he is just a Nobody Wanting to be a Somebody.

Well we would like for some folks to resign too but I don't think CNN would put it in the news.

touchdown tony   May 20th, 2009 11:33 am ET

I would love nothing more then to see Pelosi gone . She personifies the word politician . But the longer her , Harry and Barney are there the more likely the GOP comes back . We really do need a third party , and to quit voting for Incumbents . While everyone says they are deflecting the Issue the bottom line Is she Is complicit

Paul from Phoenix   May 20th, 2009 11:33 am ET

Newt and Pelosi deserve eachother.

Happy in Arizona   May 20th, 2009 11:33 am ET

Since Nancy Pelosi became Speaker of the House, she has done nothing but support herself. She makes comments like it is Unamerican to not give amnesty to illegals. She criticizes certain agencies for the expenditures, then gets herself a big plane for herself and family to fly around in. I would never trust her to be President of the US, and she should resign because she is a liar and incompetent.

pato   May 20th, 2009 11:32 am ET

Newt –now that he wants to be a candidate should have called on Nixon and Cheney to resign

Nancy Pelosi isn't the criminal here. The Republicans are very confused.

Rose   May 20th, 2009 11:32 am ET

There are so many comments about Bush/Cheney lying to everyone about the Iraq war, why isn't the name Colin Powell brought in to that mix, he is the one that offered all of the information about WMD's . He must have felt sure about what he was saying. Don't forget about all the Dem's that voted for the war, Bush could not have gone to war in Iraq without Congressional approval. Apparently they did not do their homework either.

cbc   May 20th, 2009 11:31 am ET

Go Newt! Run for president in '12! Maybe with Palin or Limbaugh or Oliver North as running mate! Make this country great again (by helping the GOP get even fewer votes than it did this time!)

C Spurgeon   May 20th, 2009 11:31 am ET

Gingrich has no moral right to even be speaking about other peoples issues. He has plenty of his own and who cares about what he thinks. Nancy on the other hand in y opinion should never have been voted in and we should have a stronger more focused leader. This lady is all about herself and we don't need more ofm that. Back on the table should be term limits and then maybne a lot of these asses would fall by the wayside.

DonnieJ   May 20th, 2009 11:30 am ET

Hey "Obama Shrugged May 20th, 2009 10:41 am ET," you got it partially right

MoonBats – Give up Pelosi, Reed, Kennedy, & Frank – OK!

Fanatics – Excommunicate Gingrich, Limbaugh, Cheney, & Dumsfeld – OK!

Capitalists – Go to work, work hard, get rich, GET LAID OFF, HAVE INVESTMENT PORTFOLIO TANK, DIE MISERABLE AND PENNILESS

Socialists – Stay in bed, ask for handouts, whine & complain, die miserable – CLOSE ENOUGH!

Ron - Saint Louis   May 20th, 2009 11:30 am ET

I can only hope that lighting doesn't strike me for saying this but I have to agree with Newt about Nancy resigning as speaker. Truth is, she has been a poor speaker that has alienated her party, often speaks without conferring with Committee Chairs first, and continues to have a us against them mentality. Someone more modern and aligned with President Obama's strategies would benefit the entire nation.

Thanks for your service Nancy, now please leave.

John   May 20th, 2009 11:30 am ET

I agree that Ms Pelosi should step down the way she has handled this whole affair is a disaster. The only thing you can hand to Mr Gingrich is that being a screwup himself he knows one when he sees one

Steve-O   May 20th, 2009 11:30 am ET

Is the GOP even relevant anymore?

Rich   May 20th, 2009 11:30 am ET

What is it with CNN and Newt Gingrich? He's news nowhere else, but every day you have his latest "look at me" tweet or cry. Given his history in politics, life and that position, it's really nonsensical that he's given any kind of a soapbox or his word given any credibility. Et tu, Newt?

Independent   May 20th, 2009 11:29 am ET

Pelosi is the typical Dem, runs her mouth with no idea what she is saying. I can't wait until 2010.

Pam   May 20th, 2009 11:29 am ET

The resignation of Nancy Pelosi would make no difference in the state of affairs of this country. If it would shut up Gingrich and all the other whiners, I say" Resign Nancy"!

Ben Raskin   May 20th, 2009 11:29 am ET

Newt Gingrich is a person no correct thinking soul could give a shred of credibility to. He is the disgrace and despite Pelosi's clumsy handling of this matter, it has been revealed time and time again that the CIA DOES lie, DOES mis-represent and gives short shrift to facts when tall tales and hidden information better suits their political agenda.

Let the Republican party continue down the path of irrelevance...

Joe   May 20th, 2009 11:29 am ET

In the last several days a number of members of congress, including republicans, have indicated that their notes on briefings and those of the CIA are in conflict. The CIA did not keep good or accurate records of briefings. So, Pelosi is likely correct in her charges against the CIA.
Back under your rock, Newt. (Boy, his mom named him right)

JOE   May 20th, 2009 11:29 am ET

His mouth is running at full speed.....But his brain is in neutral as usual..All of this from a lugnut who served his wife divorce papers in a hospital bed with while she was fighting cancer....WHAT A GUY....

Tom   May 20th, 2009 11:29 am ET

Who really cares what Newt thinks anyway? The GOP are TOTAL LOSERS. They have no direction, so they act like spiteful vindictive little brats!

Clark   May 20th, 2009 11:29 am ET

Nancy Pelosi is no favorite of mine, but I certainly believe there is a distinct possibility that the CIA actually did lie or deceive Congress...let's face it, it wouldn't be the first time they were caught in a lie (WMDs in Iraq – a "slam dunk", Iraq buying uranium from Niger, Iran-Contra, Iraq nuclear program...just recent examples). It does make one wonder about the credibility of the American intelligence community.

Curtis   May 20th, 2009 11:29 am ET

Newt, did you resign from office when you cheating on your wife? Crawl back under your rock.

jill   May 20th, 2009 11:28 am ET

You know she is kind of a flake, but Newt should be the last person to request anyone to resign. He is what is wrong with the republicans, and the sooner everyone understands that they are OLD SCHOOL, the better off this country will be. Please lets quit listening to all the old ideas and make them come up with new ones. It's obvious the old ones got us into trouble.

David   May 20th, 2009 11:28 am ET

I don't care about Pelosi and can think of a lot better reasons for her to leave office than this one. Gingrich is one of the worst politicians this country has ever seen. Talk about a liar. This is the man who single handedly broke the republican contract with America and he wants her to leave for lying???

Dizzy in PA   May 20th, 2009 11:28 am ET

I'm no Pelosi fan and wouldn't shed a tear if the Dems decide to replace her, but is Newt really the guy the GOP wants to have out there on this particular subject? Pot, meet kettle.....

David   May 20th, 2009 11:28 am ET

Newt just represents the desperation of the Republican party. They have nothing positive to offer the American public or the political process, so they have become the 'tabloid' of the political parties. Trying desperately to make an issue out of nothing. Using lies and deceptions in an attempt to gain attention, and no one really cares.

Dan   May 20th, 2009 11:28 am ET

CNN ?? CNN Please ask Gingrich.........

What does Gingrich say about:

1. Putting Bush and Cheney in Jail.

2. Bush misleading the Americans on WMDs of Iraq.

3. Intelligence reports were manufactured to mislead America into Iraq war.

4. 4200 US Troop have died and 46000 US Troops have been injured.

5. Wall Street's unscrupulous crooks made billions due to unregulated mortgage loans.

My question is; Why can't we know the truth Mr. Hoyer ? If Ms Nancy didn't lie, then she has nothing to fear and her credibility should skyrocket. Otherwise, ask her to close the door on her way out.

Tim   May 20th, 2009 11:27 am ET

Newt-- Didn't you resign in disgrace. Should the American people review the lies and controversy that you were involved in. How dare you pass judgment on someone else. Newt, you are a big reason why the GOP is where it is today. So please stop embarrassing the GOP, and go back into obscurity.

For Newt Gingrich to call for Nancy's resignation when he resigned in disgrace is ridiculous.

Let's wait until everything is out in the open before making a decision!

I REALLY wish Newt Gingrich, Rush Limbaugh and Dick Cheney would sit down, and shut the hell up! All that hot air is contributing to global warming!

Eric   May 20th, 2009 11:24 am ET

Gingrich is a hypocrite clown and is emblematic of all of the things that people disdain in the Republican party. Its yet another Republican diversion. Who cares whether she knew or not. That is not the issue here. The real issue is the illegality of the interrogation methods.

Scott B   May 20th, 2009 11:24 am ET

Hummm, ousted as speaker and yet he can point fingers, only a republican could be so bold. Got to love this new GOP talking and listening tour with all the old GOP right wingers. Please bring in new, and I again mean NEW blood, then maybe we may listen

Megan from San Diego   May 20th, 2009 11:24 am ET

I am not a big Pelosi fan but this is an obvious attempt to distract from the real issue...TORTURE.

And what about all the lies that BUSH, Cheney and Rumsfeld told us? Guess Newt doesn't care about the liers on his side.

These people are so transparent.

Marie in California   May 20th, 2009 11:24 am ET

Time for her to go.....and NOT take her government-paid-for jet with her!

Natasha   May 20th, 2009 11:24 am ET

Why should she resign? IT is still not her fault for the decision on the matter. CIA should really point the finger at Cheney, Bush and Rove. Get over yourselves here, do you think the American people are stupid.

What I am concerned about and feel betrayed about is the lies and cover-ups of Bush, Cheney crew. That is what matters to me most. People who knew and would not step up and say anything while Bush proclaimed that we do not torture. What about their betrayal and setup of a CIA Agent – Plame? So is Newt a Limbaugh twin, another mouthpiece since we are getting sick of Limbaugh's gas bagging?

Pheonix86   May 20th, 2009 11:22 am ET

On second glance, I relaize my first comment was a bit harsh and clearly immature. It's just politics, after all. I don't know why I get so upset by all of this.

Expat American   May 20th, 2009 11:22 am ET

It's beautiful how the Republican scum pursued President Clinton for 8 years and had to settle on marital infidelity to justify all of their efforts...then turn around and cause the deaths of three quarters of a million people.

Pelosi is a great leader. Gingrich is an idiot. His mouth needs to shut permanently.

saiful   May 20th, 2009 11:22 am ET

Yeah.......right!

Robert   May 20th, 2009 11:21 am ET

I hate Pelosi and she as well as ALL of Congress (Yea that includes the Republicans) are useless. BUT if she should resign then Bush should have killed himself as should ALL Republicans who willingly supported him. WHY is it that these Republicans who screwed up this country cannot just SHUT UP.

Not a Democrat

JJ-Orlando   May 20th, 2009 11:21 am ET

Let me get this straight. "Grinch says time for Pelosi to resign?" Nazi v.s Socialist pick up on this CNN. Run with it.

gary davis Harbor Oregon   May 20th, 2009 11:20 am ET

NEWT needs to go away and play with his dolls
and find someone else to piont his finger at

it looks as if most americans don't care who he goes after same as Rush

all mouth and nothing credible comes out but negative
this will not help the republican good ol boys . it will how ever help them fall

Sorry Pilan   May 20th, 2009 11:20 am ET

Why is Newtie all of the sudden relevant again? Oh yes; because all of the rest of the Republican party is irrelevant at this point. Newtie lost all of America's confidence and trust many years ago. But you know those Republicans; they can not let go of the past and move forward; so they are bringing Newtie out of the closet again to save try to save them. You Betcha!

Republicans are the American Taliban   May 20th, 2009 11:19 am ET

I hope Newt Gingrich's heart FAILS!!!

Anonymous   May 20th, 2009 11:18 am ET

now is the time to get rid of this woman. Her words cannot be trusted. You know or you don't know. You can't have it both ways. Well I know you can, that is called politics.

obambi   May 20th, 2009 11:18 am ET

Democrats–Pelosi and company started this war of lies–let them wallow in it for a while. Funny how all Dems hated Pelosi and Hilary during the TOTUS Dem primaries–now they embrace them both. Rude awakening to me how hypocritical Dems are. You people had better hope they take back their accusations about Bush and Cheney–the Dems are part of all of it., including your esteemed leader.

Debbie   May 20th, 2009 11:17 am ET

Where was Gingrich when Bush and Cheney were lying there way into a War in Iraq? Where was Gingrich was Cheney was breaking the law and torturing? He has no credibility when he pretends to care about lying or the law! What a hypocrite! Sorry Gingrich, but this isn't distracting Americans away from the real issue, illegal torture! Your outrage is just as phony as your "original"ideas.

Brad K.   May 20th, 2009 11:17 am ET

Does GOP mean Grumpy Old Politicians?

Brett   May 20th, 2009 11:16 am ET

Proud Member..Party of No   May 20th, 2009 11:16 am ET

Pelosi is the modern democrat party. She is what today's democrats vote for and want to see leading the country. We are in serious, serious trouble. This country will not exist in 50 years if we follow the course we are on now.

Florida Joe   May 20th, 2009 11:16 am ET

Time for Darth to take Newt hunting...........Newt, you were thrown out and left in disgrace....We should care about anything you say WHY???

Oh yes, I agreed with him!

B.H.   May 20th, 2009 11:16 am ET

When is it that these OLD GOP has beens give it up? The GOP had better find some younger thinkers or the GOP is history. Gingrich represents the PAST.

Hey Newt Maybe you Should resign your Pie Hole stay out of the Media and Shut it !

phoenix86   May 20th, 2009 11:15 am ET

Botox keeps allowing Pelosi to lie with a straight face. Time to remove her from the House.

Brandon   May 20th, 2009 11:14 am ET

So Newt is saying that laying (which hasn't been proven) about what someone said about an illegal act is WORSE than actually commiting or abetting an illegal act. In what reality is he living in. Prosecute the criminals not the witnesses.

Lynn   May 20th, 2009 11:14 am ET

Who is Gingrich to tell anyine to resign? Where was he when bush, Cheney et al blatantly lied and fudged to get consent to invade another country?

Michael Beausoleil   May 20th, 2009 11:14 am ET

I highly doubt the CIA would use the word waterboarding in describing what techniques they used to interrogate enemy combatants. Newt should know that when you brief someone there is always a paper trail and sometimes audio and video that Nancy would have been given during her briefing. Since there is no hard evidence, so far, it is hard to believe what Newt is saying. If anything, it seems like Newt is jealous and lonely. It is not like the CIA are one of the most trusted agencies in the world. Far from it.

jack Phoeniix, az   May 20th, 2009 11:13 am ET

This is what happens with these OLD coots. They never retire and are not in tune with the current generations. GET HER OUT before she compromises the security of this country.

Lee in TN   May 20th, 2009 11:12 am ET

Who Is Newt Gingrich to ask someone to resign?? I cannot believe that any intelligent person would listen to a man who resigned from congress in shame and disgrace. Gingrich needs to fade into oblivion and let honest people speak about ethics and morality.

St. Louis Jake   May 20th, 2009 11:11 am ET

Deflection, deflection, deflection – the Repubs condoned and performed torture (which is against U.S. and International law,) but they are chest-beating about something that is totally unrelated to the REAL issue. Torture is a crime – it should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

Brandon   May 20th, 2009 11:11 am ET

Agreed. It is time for Pelosi to step down.

Neutralizer   May 20th, 2009 11:11 am ET

Queen Pelosi will not resign, you have to call the men in black and put her in straitjacket and load her in commercial airplane back to calimexico. Why should she resign, if she gave up her position as speaker of the house no more private jet to haul her wide arse back to calimexico together with her dogs.

alvino   May 20th, 2009 11:11 am ET

I hope the press stays on this, and we eventually find out if Pelosi ordered the torture or if it was the Bush/Cheney Whitehouse. Oh wait, we already know about the Bush/Cheney violation of the law, the embarassing part , according to Newt, is if Pelosi knew before 2006 when the CIA came clean with the label of EIT.

Proud DHS radical   May 20th, 2009 11:08 am ET

NO! let her be the face of the democratic party along with Harry Reid, at least until 2010 when the majority change hands again.

Humpty Dumpty   May 20th, 2009 11:08 am ET

I just know, some how, some way, Crazy Michael Savage, is behind this Republican Game Plan, to put Newt Gingrich, Neo-Catholic, fired former Speaker Of The House, renowned woman sniffer, worn out wordsmith from the distant past, make believe intellectual, possibly older and more out of touch than John McCain, out front to lead the attack on Nancy Pelosi. It has to be. No sane person would invent such a Game Plan.

TRENT   May 20th, 2009 11:08 am ET

Gingrich is an idiot.

Michael M, Phoenix AZ   May 20th, 2009 11:07 am ET

Wasn't Newt part of the problem in the 90s, and look what carried over in the Republican "follow the leader (Bush)" era. Newt got run out of town on a rail, and now he's trying to do the same thing to the Dems.

James M. Holmes   May 20th, 2009 11:07 am ET

Watch what you wish for Republicans... you just might get it! Let the investigations begin!

Kevin in Ohio   May 20th, 2009 11:07 am ET

I think Pelosi is just lovely. I don't know where Newt get's off asking her to resign. Who asked him anyway. Last I checked he has no power or influence.

Silly, divisive conservatives.

donttreadonme   May 20th, 2009 11:07 am ET

He would know it is time, he speaks from experience …ha-ha. You are wrong Newt she is thorn in Obama’s side and should stick around. Hyper-partisanship is awesome.

Just curious why the dems like here so much? She is not very bright or polished, sort of a loose cannon like Biden.

Who is listening to this washed-up hack? He holds no office, and hasn't in a decade. America should pay as much attention to Newt as it does to Rush. Both should be taken for entertainment value only. Give it up Newt. You're a nobody now.

doberman   May 20th, 2009 11:01 am ET

I think myself that it is time for gingrich to disapear into the nothingness in which he sprang from. he needs to dig a hole behind a tree crawl in it and cover himself up with leaves and blow his own head off. that is the best he can do for this country.

Rick from Murfreesboro, TN   May 20th, 2009 11:00 am ET

It's time for Gingrich to shut up.

alvino   May 20th, 2009 11:00 am ET

Newtie is wrong. The people who have damaged America's safety are the ones who thought "Cowboy Diplomacy" was an affective way to deal with the world. Allowing countries to build a nuclear weapons program and your only response is to call them the "Axes of Evil" is pure grade school. Our position in the world has suffered the last eight years, and that has nothing to do with questioning the CIA.

wally   May 20th, 2009 11:00 am ET

Alright, I'm a conservative, but come on Newt!! "Hello pot; I'm kettle..."

Kitty   May 20th, 2009 10:59 am ET

I would say that Newt Gingrich needs to resign. But, other than running his untrustyworthy mouth, what does HE really do?

Bill ~ Down on the Bayou   May 20th, 2009 10:57 am ET

And with his comments defenfing her, Steny Hoyer joins her in the gutter.

Jason D   May 20th, 2009 10:57 am ET

Cnn, Why do you continue to post articles about Newt? He is a nothing, a nobody. He's a moron as well. He can't even win a local Georgia election. He's the biggest loser I've ever seen in politics. Is CNN saying that this is the best the Republican party can do?

echoo   May 20th, 2009 10:56 am ET

They are just picking on her because they can't target the president! They are just out for blood to help them heal their wounds of defeat. The only thing the GOP can do is tear people down, well I for one have had enough of them! I switched parties and if they think they can win me back with this crap they are wrong! They have no ideas, no plans, no leaders and no idea how to govern the people of the USA!

Jay   May 20th, 2009 10:55 am ET

Mr. Gingrich, Don't try to be smart on this matter, you and all GOP are well aware the situation we are in . What have you (GOP)done in last 8 years other than run down the economy, Jobs ,health care ,education and two wars. Speaker Pelosi you stick to your view and let American people know what they (GOP) did....................

rker321   May 20th, 2009 10:55 am ET

Why can't Mr. Gingich understand that he like many other Republicans, have become "irrelevant". As a discontented Republican, we need new direction for a "new and comprehensive " Party, and not the "oldies but certainly not the goodies"

Nick the DEM   May 20th, 2009 10:55 am ET

Nick a democrat from chicago, Illinois here.

I have no confidence in Nancy Pelosi... she's clearly lying here... and mark my words, this is the beginning of the end of her service as speaker. She picked the wrong battle... whether it happens sooner or later the CIA will have the dirt on her to even the score.

Ad West   May 20th, 2009 10:55 am ET

It's strange to me that the loudest voices from the GOP are not currently elected representatives, yet they still get all of the attention. The media should focus more on the employees that voters actually put into office. Newt is on the outside, desperately trying to be in.

Simmy   May 20th, 2009 10:54 am ET

Gingrich is so 19th century......Pelosi is a strong woman....She's not easily intimidated, so he and other Republicans hate her........She's not going anywhere.....The first sign of your party's demise, was when Joe the Plumber, an opportunity seeking reject, rejected you...

Roger   May 20th, 2009 10:54 am ET

Who in their right mind cares what Gingrich thinks or wants to do....he is a disgrace to human kind....look at how he treated his wives then he was using his "religious right wing agenda" againist Bill Clinton when he was messing around with Monica & he was having an affair with his secretary....Pelosi walks on water compared to this hypocrite....

John K   May 20th, 2009 10:54 am ET

Wisdom from "the conscience" of the House!

Truth Be Told   May 20th, 2009 10:53 am ET

Okay, why is no one else attacking Nancy Pelosi anymore but Newt Gingrich? It appears that Newt Gingrich has a personal bone to pick with Nancy and wants to ruin her career...maybe it's payback...who cares? Nancy Pelosi has been a great public servant and her name shouldn't be tarnished because Newt wants to pout for a moment. If Newt thinks the American public can't see through this, he's very special indeed.

James M. Holmes   May 20th, 2009 10:53 am ET

Maybe CNN could stop printing GOP propaganda and it could actually tell people about the 4 other members of Congress who state they were "misled" by the CIA too?

Personally, I think Pelosi has the GOP falling into her trap... BY making herself a target, she will get teh GOP to agree to teh "Truth Commision" she wants... which in turn will show that Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeild are WAR CRIMINALS!

phoenix86   May 20th, 2009 10:53 am ET

If Pelosi were a man, she would be out already.

She needs to resign her position as Speaker, then San Francisco should retire her permanently.

SENSIBLE MIKE   May 20th, 2009 10:53 am ET

I agree with this but its not Newt that needs to say this. Republicans need moderates to come out with this. As the third in line to the President we can't have someone in a position like that who has a grudge against the CIA and vice versa. Sorry Nancy, you're time is up.

Scott   May 20th, 2009 10:52 am ET

Because Newt is such a virtuous and honest person he has the right to speak, correct? Newt needs to shut his yap and CNN needs to return to the real story: the Bush Administration tortured, lied about it and created incompetent legal justifications to do so.

Jeff in Virginia   May 20th, 2009 10:51 am ET

Why should Pelosi resign?

The only evidence that she is lying are the words of Leon Panetta, who has since refused to clarify his stance on the matter.

John in Austin   May 20th, 2009 10:50 am ET

Why isn't anyone going after the people who REALLY approved and knew about torture?!?!

Go after Rice, Cheney, and Bush! They are the REAL WAR CRIMINALS!!

Monrob   May 20th, 2009 10:48 am ET

Why isn't this man dead yet?

frank, pennsylvannia   May 20th, 2009 10:48 am ET

Gingrich please direct your aggression to your fellow republicans and stop seeking to be noticed by making inflammatory remarks! Your comments are neither contructive nor helpful in making our society progressive and secure. Your comments are selfish and aimed at getting notice and attention!

Sniffit   May 20th, 2009 10:48 am ET

Newtarded.

Independent   May 20th, 2009 10:47 am ET

You know I'm not a huge fan of Nancy but it appears that Repubs are ALWAYS playing politics.....Where is the outcry over Bush and Crew lying to us about Iraq

Bonny Melita   May 20th, 2009 10:47 am ET

I do not like or trust Gingriach...He is a wanna be Speaker of the House
again...he was booted out then..Very sinister person in my opinion
I remember how he treated his dying wife...Loves being in the spot
light.

The Unshrub   May 20th, 2009 10:46 am ET

Won't this wind bag ever shut up. He has no purpose other than to try to destroy Democrats. He resigned from Congress because he failed and the American public voiced their dislike of him. It's now time he once again gets the message that the vast majority of people dislike him and want him to go away.

frank, pennsylvannia   May 20th, 2009 10:46 am ET

Time for Gingrich to direct his quit from misplaced aggression and direct his talk to his republican folks to avoid torture. Gingrich please direct your aggression to your fellow republicans and stop seeking to be noticed by making inflammatory remarks! Your comments are neither contructive nor helpful in making our society progressive and secure. Your comments are selfish and aimed at getting notice and attention!

Debra from Georgia   May 20th, 2009 10:46 am ET

And this is coming from the cheater himself. Newt go climb under that rock you were under during the Bush era.

republicanturneddemocrat   May 20th, 2009 10:45 am ET

Um, isn't Newt Gingrich the man who served divorce papers to his ailing wife on her death bed who was dying from cancer and receiving chemotherapy treatment in the hospital? At the same time having an affair...

And we are supposed to listen to this man because why?.......

I think Newt represents the GOP perfectly. Keep it up!

Kate   May 20th, 2009 10:44 am ET

Who is Newt to be asking for this?

The People Rule   May 20th, 2009 10:43 am ET

Oh will Newt please shut up already. The Republicans are hopeless. Please CNN, put this to rest already. They are like sharks going in for the kill. What a bunch of losers. Nothing to offer so we'll just divide the country and cause chaos and distraction. Like a bi-polar child having temper tantrums. Some old dirt. Different day. Yawn....

TBA   May 20th, 2009 10:42 am ET

Newt, needs to go away and resign, oh wait hes not longer GOP Speaker, hes just a Grumpy Old guy who try to get back in to the spot light.

Marcia, Marcia, Marcia in CA   May 20th, 2009 10:42 am ET

Gingrich is nothing but a loser politician who was kicked out of Washington. That is all he every was and will be.

Pelosi was democratically elected. She did nothing wrong. The diversion from the truth is not working. Crawl back into your adulterous, corrupt hole.

ObamaShrugged   May 20th, 2009 10:41 am ET

I would like to suggest some bipartisan agreements between the moonbats and the fanatics:

MoonBats – Give up Pelosi, Reed, Kennedy, & Frank

Fanatics – Excommunicate Gingrich, Limbaugh, Cheney, & Dumsfeld

Capitalists – Go to work, work hard, get rich, live happily everafter.

Socialists – Stay in bed, ask for handouts, whine & complain, die miserable.

John in Ohio   May 20th, 2009 10:40 am ET

That's different from what he said on the Daily Show last night.

Gingrich is a viper.

Erik in Real Pennsylvania   May 20th, 2009 10:40 am ET

Why does anybody still listen to this has-been blowhard?

Judie Beckman   May 20th, 2009 10:40 am ET

I think the republicans need to give it up. They are so upset that we finally have a good President that they are nitpicking anthing they can find to criticize our White House. If George Bush or any of his cabinet had done the same thing we would be told we are unamerican if we criticize them.

Enlightened Voter   May 20th, 2009 10:40 am ET

If Nancy Pelosi should resign then bush and cheyney should receive life terms in prison and every republican in office during the last 8 years should too. STOP DIVERTING ATTENTION rethugs from the fact that you all broke the law, we are not that stupid.

sean   May 20th, 2009 10:39 am ET

Does the general public really care? Move past this please and accomplish something real.

Susan   May 20th, 2009 10:39 am ET

to quote Jesse Ventura:
"These guys are asking Pelosi's resignation based on her lie. Where were these guys asking resignation when Bush and Cheney lied to lead to a war."

Marty Hancock   May 20th, 2009 10:39 am ET

Tell it like it is, Newt.
As for Hoyer's comments, its amazing how Democrats react when the press calls it straight for a change.
Its not a question of being truthful. Its a question on national security. Her comments were, as usual, self-serving. Political grandstanding at its best (worst).

vernon peterson   May 20th, 2009 10:39 am ET

The sooner she is fired the better.....

Ric   May 20th, 2009 10:38 am ET

We need the news reporters to stay on this until the truth comes out, someone is not telling the truth and the person who is not needs to go no matter who it is.

Ernie in LA   May 20th, 2009 10:38 am ET

Change we can believe in. Maybe Nancy needs an hearing aid.

Toni - Atlanta   May 20th, 2009 10:37 am ET

Who pays attention to Newt's grandstanding?

Keith   May 20th, 2009 10:37 am ET

I don't understand why the media focuses on when Pelosi knew about torture and whether pictures of torture will or won't be released. Isn't the real story the torture?

Rob   May 20th, 2009 10:37 am ET

With all due respect Mr. Gingrich, it was time for Pelosi to step down the day after she took the position in 2007.

steve   May 20th, 2009 10:36 am ET

please newt, fade into history and give the country a break

America Shrugged   May 20th, 2009 10:36 am ET

Go get em Steney..You are correct. Rather than report on the real story of torture ( which barely received the press coverage it should have) they go after Nancy Pelosi who according to them, sided with the President? LOL.. Keep it coming GOP.. It gets better every day. BTW, Nancy ain't going anywhere so you can just keep yelling that she needs to resign her position.. What nerve, she took impeachment off the table, and now you want her to resign. Newt, go away.

Dutch/Bad Newz,VA   May 20th, 2009 10:36 am ET

Newt is jealous because Nancy does a better job as Speaker than he ever did. I just wish that we didn't have the previous administration vetoing everything the 110th Congress tried to get passed.

Russ   May 20th, 2009 10:36 am ET

Newt, don't you have any other sick wives you can abandon and divorce for a younger, prettier babe?

Look Forward   May 20th, 2009 10:36 am ET

Newt Gingrich is a pathetic self-promoter who will say anything in order to stay in the public eye. If the Republican Party still exists in 2012 and runs this has been reactionary, it will make Reagan/Mondale in '84 look like a horse race.

steve   May 20th, 2009 10:35 am ET

please newt ,fade into history and give the county a break

Dina   May 20th, 2009 10:33 am ET

No, it's time Gingrich returned back to the relative obscurity rock he has crawled out from under.
