Rush Limbaugh criticized Colin Powell as being part of the 'stale, the old, the worn-out GOP.'

(CNN) - Colin Powell and Rush Limbaugh escalated their war of words on Wednesday, with the talk radio host calling the former Secretary of State part of the "stale, the old, the worn-out GOP that never won anything."

The comments came hours after Powell fired back at Limbaugh and former Vice President Dick Cheney over recent remarks questioning his GOP credentials.

"Rush Limbaugh says, 'get out of the Republican Party.' Dick Cheney says, 'he's already out,'" Powell said at a Tuesday night event in Boston, according to the Boston Globe. "I may be out of their version of the Republican Party, but there's another version of the Republican Party waiting to emerge once again."

Powell drew ire from many in the GOP for his decision to endorse President Obama's candidacy, and said earlier this month that the party would be better off without Limbaugh.

On his show Wednesday, Limbaugh mocked Powell's comments. "And now there's an agenda, an emerging agenda, that he's waiting for for the Republican Party?" said the radio host. "The only thing emerging here is Colin Powell's ego. Colin Powell represents the stale, the old, the worn-out GOP that never won anything."

Limbaugh, who has been called the de facto leader of the Republican Party by leading Democrats, also said that he is resigning from the position.

"I am resigning as the titular head of the Republican Party," Limbaugh said. "Clearly I am not the titular head of the Republican Party, it's not an office I sought, it was an office position that rather was ladled onto me, and one I was appointed without by acquiescence."

Powell showed his true racial colors just like most of the blacks who voted for obama, but its not racism if your black now is it
and tulsa anytime your in houston look me up. all talk, just like the rest of you spinless brainwashed fools

Bye bye Cheney and Limbaugh...   May 20th, 2009 5:58 pm ET

If the Republican Party has any chance in the future it would be with Powell's direction, surely not 13% Cheney and the blowhard idiot Limbaugh...

Let the far right rule the party of the southeast...which, will be the name of the Republican Party in a decade...

David   May 20th, 2009 5:58 pm ET

I think Powell is correct or the Republican party will split into a two. One will be a sane party and the other a party of the extreme right (the ones in control of the GOP now).

As far as Rush Limbaugh, I don't agree with much of anything he says. He's just an entertainer and I find him amusing. It's unfortunate so many people take what he says seriously.

CurlyQ31   May 20th, 2009 5:56 pm ET

Rush Limbaugh and Dick Cheney just doesn't like Colin Powell because he is an honest man who does care about this country. Remember they are part of the stale Good ole boy network where they are still upset because slavery was abolished. We know why they don't like Colin Powell. Ask Dick about that murder in the Whitehouse of Manny the Houseboy from Laos in the waterboarding "ACCIDENT" or so they call it. That's Heinous!!

Diana NJ   May 20th, 2009 5:56 pm ET

He, Rush will not be able to keep his mouth shut.. don't believe it...

Jon   May 20th, 2009 5:56 pm ET

I think voting for Obama means that you're a member of the Democratic Socialist Party and not a Republican.

Doug   May 20th, 2009 5:56 pm ET

We need to find a way to identify and shame the decision makers who allow someone like Rush Limbaugh to have a microphone over the air.

Obviously the first amendment frees them from any legal problems, but those companies that buy advertising time from him and the radio stations that broadcast his message need to be flooded with complaints. He lies, distorts, and ruthlessly shames people constantly and they are supporting him.

Missy M   May 20th, 2009 5:56 pm ET

Why is Powell so reluctant to officially split from the Republican party? When you endorse and vote for the democratic presidential candidate and you constantly criticize republicans ... that kind of makes you a democrat.

wow   May 20th, 2009 5:55 pm ET

Division among parties division among the country i was once told while playing sports there is no bad play as long as everyone knows what it is and everyone does there best to execute the play why so much finger pointing Rush help come up with ideas an means to improve and chill out with the blame game if Dems fail the country we all suffer and vice versa wake up everybody too much is at stake to keep blaming others especially your own party!

Todd from CO   May 20th, 2009 5:55 pm ET

Lefties, why all the anger and hatred? You guys won last November...remember? Lighten up! You are getting exactly what you wanted including higher taxes, less security, bail outs, and more government. The funny reality here is that the people you are teeing off on with these comments (Rush, Cheney, Palin, and the GOP in general could care less what you think. But if it makes you feel better...great! Have a nice day!

Akins   May 20th, 2009 5:55 pm ET

Everyone that voted or endorsed Obama should be thrown out of Republican Party – Cheney and Rush. This is the wisest saying of Cheney and Rush. I guess Colin Powell along with about 55 million Americans should be thrown out of Republican party; that is the wises way to re-build Republican party. Rush and Cheney are wises men ever lived. These foolish men should keep quiet once and for all, so that we Republican can rebuild with Powell and other good guys that remain in Republican Party.

Make me understand...   May 20th, 2009 5:55 pm ET

Please mr. Powell, don't level yourself with Rush Lim...Just ignore him..

Jim in Indiana   May 20th, 2009 5:54 pm ET

How can Limbaugh resign from the title "titular head of the Republican Party" ? This was a joke - a title made in jest by Democrats, to make fun of the way Michael Steele and others were cowtowing to him. Rush, you can't "resign" from a joke title, unless you are are, as Al Franken put it, "a big, fat idiot" ! So, if Franken is right, then go ahead and resign, idiot!

Peter (CA)   May 20th, 2009 5:54 pm ET

"When republicans run as conservatives, they win every time."

What a great delusion you guys keep throwing up. Let's look for conservative presidents. Last one was Reagan (whose spending sprees does not look all that conservative) and then we have to go back to....hmmm...Hoover. Quite a winning streak.

All the conservatives are doing is infecting the Republican party from the inside. "Unless, you adopt our impossible to follow pledges, you're not one of us". Maybe you guys should focus on the real world instead of the drug-induced one you are in now. Given the posts on this blog, I think that may be difficult.

He is the biggest grouch, he's always miserable and never ever has anything nice to say. He never looks on the bright side of anything. I mean, i know he's in remission from drug abuse, but was he nicer when he was doing drugs? Oh my God- I wish he would just be put out to pasture and graze around like the cow that he is.

Hedgehog   May 20th, 2009 5:26 pm ET

More drivel from a drug-addled blowhard. Just what the republican party needs. Perhaps if they spent more time listening to people who have actual accomplishments (like, say, Colin Powell) instead of talk-radio junkie hypocrites they could win once more.

Rush is a big money-maker for Fox and he'll be with us for as long as it lasts. Personally, I think he, as the voice of the GOP, will be very instrumental in helping to keep the Democrats in power for a very long time to come.

hawkeye   May 20th, 2009 5:26 pm ET

Poor Lush Dumbaugh, What a dillusioanl idiot. Appointed by God to tell stupid people what to think. Most people who condemn government and others the way he does are either in prison or a mental health institution. He on the otherhand has made millions off of it. Not much different than the ministers who profit inordently while doing the Lords work. Wake up America the game is nearing an end.

Greg   May 20th, 2009 5:25 pm ET

Joe Lieberman, a former vice presidential candidate in 2004, voted for McCain instead of Obama. Ironically, he is not trashed by the party. Why are the republicans so upset about Powell supporting Obama? Is it really about race? Is Lieberman so racist that he couldn"t vote for Obama? The Republicans are sore losers. They think America belongs to them. Is it fair to say that they now want to remind Powell that he is just a black man....? What a party!!!! What they don't know, Powell remains one of the most respected men on earth.

JHEARD, SURPRISE, AZ   May 20th, 2009 5:25 pm ET

Limbaugh, Fmr. VP Cheney, Gingrich, Boehner, Cantor, O'Connell, Bond and others have proved that "GOP" is not a party for any minority groups.

I used to get upset at Limbaugh.... Now I just laugh at him... I think God experimented when creating Rush and later realized, he/she screwed up.... That's why God did not create anymore creatures like Rush :) :):):):)

I'm sorry, but I think Rush was referring to himself...""stale, the old, the worn-out GOP that never won anything."
Because, as far as I remember, the party Rush supported didn't win...duh.
Does Rush remember any recent history at all?
Or is he just pissing in the corner like a dog marking it's territory?

All you Republicans who are saying that Colin Powell should be kicked out of the Republican Party for voting for President Obama better be ready for many Republicans and Independents who chose him as the best choice to start realizing they are not part of the party either. Gopod luck winning them back!!

That someone is a democratic country is tied with a ball and chain to one of two parties is facist and draconian.

The old, worn out GOP who never won anything? I'm sorry, Mr. Limbaugh...WHAT HAVE YOU WON?

Dennis Watts   May 20th, 2009 5:23 pm ET

Mr. Limbaugh did the right thing, by resigning from a position he never actually occupied. He and Mr. Cheney can go duck hunting now, instead of head hunting. Mr. Powell & Mr. Gates are the only 2 Bush
cabinet members who have legitimate credentials of trustwothiness.

JW   May 20th, 2009 5:23 pm ET

As a (former) moderate republican, I have seen my party wander away from me. My beliefs and morals haven't changed, but the party I used to consider myself a part of has changed theirs. Without having to change a single thing, I have found myself a moderate democrat. Gen. Powell is speaking for those of us who feel marginalized by the right-wing, who are waiting for a true two-party system to re-emerge.

All American   May 20th, 2009 5:23 pm ET

Limbaugh & Cheney are both perfiect examples of old-school GOP blow-holes. One takes too many pills, the other is crippled, both are over weight.

No contest; Gen. Powell has credibility – Rush has money. For all you whitewashed idiots that think that race had anything to do with Powell endorsing Obama then there is nothing one can say to convince you. Does anyone really wonder why the current Republican Party is in the shape it's in?

Lisa in Shelton CT   May 20th, 2009 5:19 pm ET

Powell represented the stale party that never won anything – wasn't he working for the elected president? Powell did not endorse the GOP losers that Rush voted for – McCain/Palin. Voting one's conscience in any election doesn't negate your party affiliation – but if your vote went to the other guys, it behooves your party to figure out where they're missing it. In this case, Rush need only look in a wide mirror.

PCS / North Carolina   May 20th, 2009 5:19 pm ET

Reasonable, moderate, clear thinking and lucid republicans (thing Eisnehower, Lincoln, Rockefeller, Specter) have been driven from the tent by the screamimg, fanatic, hard right, idiotic whackjobs (think Bush, Cheney, Limbaugh, Coulter, Rove).

Is it any surprise they are at 21% and falling???

Susie from Austin, Texas   May 20th, 2009 5:17 pm ET

Looks like the GOP would be ready to dump Limbaugh and Cheney. Why would any political party want members who continue to drag them down and who will eventually destroy the party??

Lesley Anne   May 20th, 2009 5:17 pm ET

Limbaugh is ridiculous. If Powell was part of the "stale, the old, the worn-out GOP that never won anything" perhaps Mr. Limbaugh forgot that Bush won the WH and was in the WH for the last 8 years and Powell was part of that as his secretary of state. What he should have said was part of the old, worn-out GOP that shouldn't have won anything.

Jason B.   May 20th, 2009 5:16 pm ET

Limbaugh and Cheney are definitely the ones stuck in time as the old GOP...uncompromising and refusing to even listen to anyone else's ideas.

The GOP should split in two. One side to be free-thinking and open to ideas, and one side to stay with Limbaugh and Cheney and cater to the super-religious far right.

James Pfeiffer   May 20th, 2009 5:14 pm ET

Only in America can a pill-popping, racist, hate-mongering fat man question the ethics and intelligence of a real gentleman statesman.

Limbaugh saying he didn't want to be the leader of the GOP is as hypocritical as Rove saying we went to war in Iraq because of the Democrats.

General Powell has proven that he cares for America, not a political party. Hopefully everyday Republicans will be able to take back their party from the idiots listed above.

Patty in the CA mountains   May 20th, 2009 5:14 pm ET

Grammarian   May 20th, 2009 5:12 pm ET

Both sides are to blame. Powell's mistake was to affiliate with the Republican Party in the first place. Bush Administration played him for a chump. That angers Powell. But he doesn't have an easy outlet for his anger. Unfortunately, his own gullibility was part of the problem.

dave   May 20th, 2009 5:12 pm ET

Bev - NYC   May 20th, 2009 5:10 pm ET

Kids this is what happens when your brain is on drugs. Really fat boy General Colin Powell never won anything? First of all he won, the first Iraq war, ever hear of Desert Shield Desert Storm, 3 days in and out. He won over racism in the south during Jim Crow to rise to the rank of General. The fact that he is smart enough not to agree with a low information, couldn't hack it in college, many times married, prescription druggie, loudmouth, earns him more respect. The Bush Adminstration used his reputation to launch their 6 year FUBAR in Iraq. He does not have to be forever on his knees and grateful to a party going nowhere.

mark   May 20th, 2009 5:10 pm ET

Look. Colin Powell is not a republican. He endorsed and voted for a
democratic presidential candidate. He's not a politician. He's not a statesman. He's retired from public life.

If all African Americans voted based on color Shirley Chisholm would've garnered more of the Democratic vote in the 70's, Jesse Jacksoon would've won the Democratic nomination in 1988 and Reverend Al Sharpton would've gotten a lot more votes in the 90's.

It's easy to regurgitate what someone else says because you don't have to think. Try something new for a change...use your brain, if you have a functioning one, to form your own opinion based on facts.

Heather in Seattle   May 20th, 2009 4:39 pm ET

Colin Powell is right! More people would be willing to vote for Republicans if they were like Colin Powell. The venom spewed by Limbaugh only attracts a small percentage of the conservatives. Many of the countries republicans follow the idea of being fiscally responsible without the other crackpot ideas preached on by the ultra right wingers. There are also many independents that would follow this type of political leadership. What Limbaugh, Cheney and Newt are trying to sell, the majority of us are not buying, we are smarter than that.

Robert   May 20th, 2009 4:39 pm ET

Limbaugh is the Clown Prince of the Republican Party. What has he ever even done to serve his country - besides blovate for bucks ($)?

Gen. Powell, on the other hand, has served his country with distinction in many capacities. He's in an entirely different league than Limbaugh, and shouldn't even bother "debating" him in the media.

ghost   May 20th, 2009 4:37 pm ET

One thing Rush said on his show that was so terrible? How bout that Powell endorsed Obama because of his race?

But hey, Rush is great listening if you wish to have a good laugh...

GOP Disaster   May 20th, 2009 4:37 pm ET

He can talk junk to Colin Powell but he can't talk trash to Wanda Sykes.

Edward Veidt   May 20th, 2009 4:36 pm ET

Yeah... let's see who has more credibility, the four-star general with multiple tours of duty and nearly 50 years of service to his country, or the blowhard college dropout who avoided service and got busted for illegal prescriptions...

Che   May 20th, 2009 4:36 pm ET

How can anyone take this pill popping performer seriously. If he knows what's best for the country he should try to run for office, but he knows that his scandolous life will surface and he'll be an even bigger joke than he is now. Have another oxycotin Rush you blowhard....

nda   May 20th, 2009 4:36 pm ET

Shut yo trap up Willy. Colin Powell voted just like other Republicans for Obama because McCain was not the man for the job to be president. Therefore, you might want to read a book or google what a republican is and find out more about Colin Powell and what he stands for. Let me be clear, IT WAS NOT RACE. Don't get it twisted and make this a race issue like YOUR leader Rush Limbo makes it out to be

I think that Rush, Cheny, coulter, Ingram. Palin are all a disgrace to the American People. And the republicans continue to worship these people. I sugguest that Todd Palin starts another AIP party where alaska would with draw from the Union and all these guys go join them and also Take the republicans out of DC and put them up there too and the USA would be a peacful place to live in. And then just think how happy they would be Having Sarah as their President and every one would be Happy.

Take note liberls. Hard work not a Obama liberl goverment handout gets you the success Rush has. No one gave it to him.He earned It.

If there are any Republicans who actually feel that the country would be better run with Mc Cain at the helm, can you please add a comment explaining your reasoning. I just can't see the McCain & Palin ticket moving the country to where it needs to be moving. I just think that Gen. Powell feels the same way. Am I wrong? Please in all sincerity, let me know why.

Long Live the King. Hail King Limbaugh :)

Buddy   May 20th, 2009 4:30 pm ET

WOW,
I can tell that this CNN Forum leans so far to the left that most of you could not even see the middle!
Colin Powell dosn't represent any part of the Republican party with his endorsment of Obama. He is just a guy who thinks he can get ahead by pandering to people like you all, who think you can get something for nothing. Just take it from those who earn it.
RIGHT?

Larry from RI   May 20th, 2009 4:29 pm ET

Funny how these chicken-hawks that support Rush, (who never served and is a pill junkie) over a lifelong soldier and American hero – have never served their country either!

Hmmm – anyone else see a pattern emerging here?

The biggest cowards are always the toughest talkers!

Anonymous   May 20th, 2009 4:29 pm ET

That's the problem with the GOP nowadays, you cannot suggest anything to them, or criticize anything they do! If you dare to say something you'll get Limbaugh and company blasting you with insults and harsh comments.

Democracy? Free speech? sure, but not if yo disagree with the GOP.

Kevin B   May 20th, 2009 4:28 pm ET

Rush and his taliban version of the GOP is doing us all a favor and showing the real shrill and anti-intellectual face of thier constituency.

Rush and Cheney are so busy throwing people out the thier "party" that they will be left exposed as the frauds and hypocritical chicken hawks they are.

Cheney/Rush 2012 LMAO........

TX Jim   May 20th, 2009 4:27 pm ET

The Republican problem appears to be... the best candidate for them in 2012 is probably Colin Powell. But he already endorsed Obama...

Maybe they can run Rush and O'Reilly out there so he can see how popular they really arent.

skyhawkdriver   May 20th, 2009 4:26 pm ET

Can rush lumblubber just please go away??..I certainly respect general powell for his service but I certainly don't think of him as a republican..but I can guarantee that I will listen to what he has to say and respect him for saying it a long time before i will listen to rush the idiot..and I'm a republican..although I am leaning more and more libertarian

WE are all elated that Rush Limbaugh and Dick Cheney are taking turns with the shovel. Pretty soon the hole will be large enough to drop the entire Bush administration in. Those guys are going to prison. And rightfully so.

J.P.   May 20th, 2009 4:25 pm ET

When republicans run as conservatives, they win every time.

When republicans run as "democrat lite," they get clobbered. Why?

Because when there is already a liberal on the ballot, why vote for the Diet Coke version of liberal? Those inclined to vote for liberals will vote for the real deal.

Anyone who would endorse Obama for President is truly not a Republican; just stands to reason he's a RINO and NO good for the Republican party, or the country for that matter. Just cross the isle and stop with the facade.
-------------

If General Powell is not a real Republican, then was Ronald Reagan's son a fake Republican since he did endorese Pres. Obama? Why are Republicans only questioning the faithfulness of their black constiuents.

Priscilla California   May 20th, 2009 4:24 pm ET

Powell supported President Obama over McShame because he was the best person for the job. "Country First" remember that. Powell was country first not party especially when the party is going in the wrong direction.

lawyermommy   May 20th, 2009 4:23 pm ET

WHY IS LIMBAUGH BEING PROFILED AT ALL??? He is an etertainer.. he is taking the party in a handbasket straight to the land of "NEVER WINNING ANY MORE ELECTIONS" .

Attacking seasoned Republicans like Powell only make the party look weak and discombobulated.

This is a sad state of affairs. Is there any hope for the Republican party??? At this point... between Newt, Steele and Rush..all I can see for them in the future is a MOVIE DEAL.

Thats all.

Anyone who takes anything limpbaugh says as gospel is a true MORON. General Colin Powell has served his and my country with honor and distinction. All limpbaugh has done is make his living off of a bunch of uneducated, racist, morons. So go ahead repubs keep following him. He goes home to a mansion you go home to a trailer. Maybe when you go broke he will let you live as q surf on his estate.

Limbaugh is terrified that there could once again be a relevant, pro-American Republican party, and his faction will fall completely to the wayside. I don't know whether the Neocons serve a foreign master hell-bent on destroying the United States, or if they are a domestic subversive terrorist group, but either way, Colin Powell is right, and Rush, in his opiate fantasies, is wrong.

Georgia Gal   May 20th, 2009 4:20 pm ET

Eric   May 20th, 2009 4:16 pm ET

I find it truly amazing that Rush is considered the "New" GOP while General Colin Powell is considered "old and stale". Also I find it utterly laughable that a man who goes to a convention as a guest speaker and starts chanting his own name along with everyone else makes any comments about a decorated war hero's ego. One man has dedicated his entire career to his country, the other to his ever expanding waist line. I will take General Powell and his service to this country over Rush and his golden microphone anyday.

Louis   May 20th, 2009 4:16 pm ET

I'm becoming more convinced that RL is provoking SOLELY to raise his ratings. Simple response. Pay no attention to the blowhard behind the curtain. Better yet, write his sponsors and tell them you won't buy their products/services. He's all about the ratings. (Certainly not the Republican party, and NO WAY the average (centrist) American!)

There are two republican parties in my eyes. The right wing Religious Republican Party, and the more moderate respectable party of which Senator Spector and Senator Snowe belong. The first is just some kind of psychotic faction of the party that is hellbent on destroying this country through racism, hatred, bigotry and divisiveness. America is watching and listening and will never be fooled again by these fools.

Pat F   May 20th, 2009 4:09 pm ET

I love how Democrats rally around Colin Powell, the single biggest reason we got into the Iraq war. It was his lying sack of you-know-what speech at the UN that got MILLIONS of us to suspend our doubts and support the war. AND it was his little friend Richard Armitage who outed Valerie Plame, and Powell knew about it from day one but let Karl Rove take the heat.

Powell is a just an accommodator to power – he knows exactly what to kiss, whose to kiss and when to kiss it.
